Stephen Colbert pokes fun at Adam Dunn

Stephen Colbert even sideswipes the cubs in this hilarious 4 minute segment.  At least football is back, Chicago baseball fans.
If you liked Jim Thome, Adam Dunn shouldn't be a problem

There's been a fair amount of hand-wringing--albeit, mostly on sports radio, and I must emphasize that filling 4 hours of airtime is far more difficult than it sounds--about how the White Sox fanbase will react to Adam Dunn's style of play. This is not without merit.
White Sox Season Preview 2011 - The War on Southern Regression - Adam Dunn
2011-02-21 06:03:00
The first televised Spring Training game for the White Sox isn't till the 28th, and I'm not even sure I have MLB Network. From now until I try to explain to my father over the phone how to use his DVR, I'll be getting the previewing started by covering what the big factors for the White Sox' success in 2011 will hinge on. This is the first chapter, and in time I'll create a tab to put all these pieces on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So often you'll hear about a bad team "they're not bad, they're just young". This statement is of course, wrong, because the team is bad as they are losing, in the here and now. But it's also true. While they may be bad, organizations with very young rosters are not hopeless, as there are brighter days waiting once the inconsistencies of youth subside. Old teams that are bad, well, they're just screwed. While ever player has off-years, if a player i...
What Adam Dunn is saying is great, what he's doing for the White Sox m
2010-12-05 10:42:00
In the breakdown between being a legitimate baseball analyst and an emotion-driven fan, I probably still rank as 30/70. So when Adam Dunn says things like "I'm to a point now where I'm on a team that has a chance to win a World Series and I'll do whatever they want me to do." I get irrationally excited. I mean, come on! Someone just said "White Sox" and "World Series" and didn't follow it up "slashed prices on DVDs". Dunn's unbridled enthusiasm to be a part of the White Sox is certainly welcome, and with the investment being made, the goal of a World Series title is appropriate, but it needs to be taken with a couple of ottoman-sized grains of salt.

2010-12-02 23:07:00
According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, a four-year deal for "a bit less" than $60 million over four-years is basically complete between the Chicago White Sox and Adam Dunn. Other sources are saying the specific number is $56 million. So once again, Sox GM Kenny Williams has landed one of the biggest free agents in Major League Baseball...

2010-11-18 08:19:00
In an effort to be a well-researched, consistently topical White Sox blogger, I took the liberty of following @mlbtraderumors on Twitter some months back. For a while, it seemed like a pretty good decision; it actually reminded me to follow semi-plausible trade talk, and kicked some half-decent topics for posts rather often. I felt pretty positive about until today, when I left my laptop open with Twitter up and left for work, only to return in the evening to find that my laptop very exploded, with burnt shards in the couch, embedded in the wall, and one, having impaled the cat. So long, Lou Holtz the Cat, you flew just a little too close to the sun. I kid, of course. If blogging was literally killing off those I loved...I probably would at least parse myself down to 3 posts a week. But seriously, there was the proverbial ass-load of White Sox trade stories today, and in the past three days. This is a development that's quite remarkable, because to date, absolutely nothing h...
Adam Dunn to White Sox rumors, and why they're not that exciting
2010-06-30 17:00:00
Apparently the White Sox are so hard up for Adam Dunn, the power-hitting, and even more power-swinging 1st baseman for the Nationals, that they sent scouts to his last game. Scouts! To a Nationals game! When Strasburg wasn't even pitching! The game was in Atlanta though; maybe our guys just wanted to eat at Waffle House.
Diamondbacks acquire OF Adam Dunn from Reds (AP)
2008-08-12 06:05:00
Adam Dunn had no idea the Cincinnati Reds were about to trade him to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. But with longtime teammate Ken Griffey Jr. already gone and the Reds on a six-game losing streak, Dunn didn’t mind packing his bags and heading West. “It was one of those pleasant surprises,” the slugger said on a conference call. Read the full story.
Mike Napoli: The Catcher Version of Adam Dunn
2008-05-18 14:05:00
Not to be confused with Adam Dunn, this is Mike Napoli. Over the past several seasons, Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Dunn has earned a reputation in most clubhouses for being a big-time power hitter who fails to hit for average and strikes out often. In 2007, Dunn batted .264 with 40 home runs
Free Agent Stock Watch: Adam Dunn
2008-04-21 10:17:00
Adam Dunn will be a free agent after this season. So it's a safe bet that Dunn is going to have a career year and will cash in this winter, right? Not so fast. Dunn, who has hit exactly 40 home runs in each of the past three seasons, has only two so far. But that's not what makes Dunn's 2008 start so interesting. This season, Dunn's OBP is a robust .418, but his batting average is an anemic .191. How do we account for this dichotomy? Quite simply, Dunn has walked more than usual. So far, he's walked 19 times in 47 at bats. He's on pace to walk 211 times, assuming he gets as many at bats as last season (522). Amazingly, that wouldn't break the record for most walks in a season, which was set by Barry Bonds in 2004. But it would still be a remarkable feat, especially considering 120 of Bonds' walks were intentional, and Dunn has yet to be intentionally walked this month. Of course, we're getting ahead of ourselves. This is a very small sample size we're talking about. More t...

Razzball Mailbag - Valuing Adam Dunn

Rios For Franklin Gutierrez and Cliff Lee?
2007-12-04 17:03:00
UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 10:03am: Per Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun: no match for the Indians and Jays on Rios.  I knew Gutierrez/Lee didn't sound right. FROM 12-4-07 at 9:46am: Joel Sherman has a new column up with some fresh rumors. The Indians and Blue Jays are reportedly talking about a swap that would send Alex Rios to the Tribe for Franklin Gutierrez and Cliff Lee.  Seriously?  That seems like a lousy deal for the Jays.  How long until a debunking on this one? The Jake Peavy signing is a cause for optimism as the Indians seek to re-sign C.C. Sabathia. As you know, the Cubs are all about getting a left-handed hitting right fielder, and Kosuke Fukudome is the best available.  Adam Dunn was also on their radar (in right field??) but those talks died.  Sherman says if the Cubs don't get Fukudome they could move on to Johnny Damon (in right field??). showad();
Adam Dunn Changing his Tune?

Adam Dunn Changing his Tune?
2007-11-07 22:47:00
Adam should get 500 HR Dunn As I was looking over the second half HR leaders, I stopped and doubled checked a line on Adam Dunn. He had a great second half, with a .985 OPS, 16 HR & 48 RBI. What really stuck out was (once again), his SO/BB ratio. We all know that Dunn loves to hack away, as evidenced by his strikeout reputation. But now check out his 2007 month by month splits, with special emphasis on his walks & strikeouts. The walks went up, that’s pretty plain to see. The ratio was also dramatically improved, with Dunn striking out only four more times than he walked in the second-half. That’s a drastic turnaround. Proving to me that this wasn’t a fluke is the month by month comparison in strikeouts. Counting down we start at April with 32, 41,25,28,23 and finally 16. All the while the walks (again starting in April) go from 14,16,9,19,26, and finish at 14. Granted, he missed time in September, but the trend still exists. The first and second hal...
Dunn, Hatteberg Option Decisions Due Sunday
2007-10-30 22:04:00
According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds have to make decisions on the options for Adam Dunn, Scott Hatteberg, Eddie Guardado, and Javier Valentin by November 4th. Dunn is the big one; his is for $13MM with a $0.5MM buyout.  This is an easy decision to exercise, though it will cause full no-trade protection to kick in until June 15th.  After that he gets to choose 10 clubs to which he would accept a trade.  But I think that if the Reds want him out of town the two parties will find a way to make it work (ie, they'll give him a million or two extra). Hatteberg's option is for $1.85MM with a $0.15MM buyout.  This is so cheap it's hard to decline, even if Joey Votto is ready.  The Reds could definitely exercise it and trade Hatteberg at their discretion.  The market for first basemen is weak. Everyday Eddie has a $3MM club option with no apparent buyout.  He didn't show anything, so I'm guessing the Reds will pass. Valentin's o...

Graziano's Latest: Andruw, Dunn, Fukudome
2007-08-12 18:04:00
Dan Graziano has a new article up regarding the free agent outfielder crop.  He spoke to two anonymous GMs.  Let's take a look at some highlights. Andruw Jones has an awful .216/.312/.418 line this year.  He's been outdone by Shawn Green, Sammy Sosa, Jose Vidro, and Shannon Stewart in terms of OPS.  Nonetheless, Jones isn't expected to come at a discount.  Scott Boras will just play up the defense, the RBIs, the career totals, whatever.  Graziano says "it's hard to see" the Reds picking up Adam Dunn's $13MM option.  This would just be plain dumb on Wayne Krivsky's part.  Given the $0.5MM buyout, it's basically like signing Dunn to a one-year, $12.5MM deal.  How many teams would pass on a huge power bat on a no-risk one-year commitment?  If the Reds don't exercise the option, it will be change for change's sake.  And a bad decision. Kosuke Fukudome is the dark horse, a possible impact right fielder from Japan....
Nats Just Messing With Reds On Dunn?
2007-08-03 16:46:00
John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer has an interesting tidbit today: did Jim Bowden engage Wayne Krivsky in talks about Adam Dunn just to string him along and waste his time?  Fay's source says Bowden never intended to trade for Dunn, but strung Krivsky along in some sort of childish maneuver. The Reds still have a pending grievance regarding reliever Gary Majewski, who they believe was damaged goods when they received him.  Is bad blood lingering, or can the two clubs play nice? Chris Needham doesn't buy Fay's story.
Dunnderhead Alert
2007-08-01 07:11:00
Adam Dunn takes a lot of unwarranted abuse from the anti-sabermetric crowd, but we thought Paul Daugherty of the Cincinnati Enquirer was above all that. Seriously, he was one of us. And now he's not. At some point between his columns of June 13th, 2007, and July 31st, 2007, someone got to him, and made him change his tune. I hope it was worth it, Daugherty. As John Lennon asked, "How do you sleep?" The combined forces of BTL would really like to know.Hunches abound the day before the non-waiver trade deadline. Here's another. Here is all that matters about Adam Dunn:The Reds can't afford him.Which is a shame, right? You wish that they could afford him, because he's so good and everything, and you're writing an article to lament the fact that they can't? Please? You can haul out your geek sheets and quote chapter and verse about Dunn's OBA, OBP, OPS, HR and RBI and how he hits with RISP, OK? You can say the Reds won't match his power when he's gone. You can defend his defense...
Unconfirmed Rumor: Cubs Looking At Griffey, Dunn
2007-07-27 23:35:00
Didn't hear the report myself, but a loyal reader dropped me an email. Apparently a recent Bruce Levine report for ESPN Radio 1000 had some interesting Cubs rumors.  Levine says the Cubs might try to trade for Adam Dunn or Ken Griffey Jr.  Any deal would likely include Sean Gallagher, and the Cubs called up Matt Murton today to showcase him. This rumor leaves more questions than answers: Would the Cubs again move their superstar signing Alfonso Soriano to center or right field to create a spot for Dunn? If not, how ugly would Dunn be in right field at Wrigley?  He hasn't played the position regularly since 2001. With the management situation in flux, could the Cubs really take on Griffey's contract, which runs through 2008?  Or even the $3.8MM still owed to Dunn this year? Are Arby's new popcorn chicken shakers as tasty as they look on TV? Would Gallagher and Murton be enough for either of those players?
Rosenthal On Teixeira, Dunn
2007-07-20 23:38:00
I neglected to mention a Ken Rosenthal article from yesterday, chock full of rumory goodness as always. Rosenthal believes the Yankees need a backup plan in case they are not able to retain Alex Rodriguez.  Wilson Betemit definitely makes sense in that he'd be useful even if they do keep A-Rod.  Rosenthal basically names every third baseman you can think of.  The most likely option, to me, is to simply sign Mike Lowell as a free agent.  Would he switch sides?  Perhaps, if the Red Sox don't make an offer or try to lowball him. The Braves apparently won't give up Yunel Escobar or Jarrod Saltalamacchia to get Mark Teixeira.  Neither of 'em.  No doubt John Schuerholz will spend the next ten days trying to get Jon Daniels to settle for less. The Reds have a "co-Dunn-drum," as Rosenthal puts it.  Now that's good stuff.  The basic codunndrum here is that no team that can afford Adam Dunn wants him.  Rosenthal likes the Tigers...
Melvin On The Dunn Rumor
2007-07-20 22:34:00
Brewers GM Doug Melvin had a funny comment on yesterday's bogus Adam Dunn to Milwaukee rumor: "I'm taking more calls deflecting these kinds of rumors than I've had talking to GMs.  There are freaking geeks who get...off on this kind of stuff." How did this game of telephone get started?  According to Mark Sheldon at MLB.com, a Cincinnati radio guy posted the trade as a rumor on his blog, and then apparently Sportsradio 1250 in Milwaukee announced it as a completed deal.  ESPN then picked up that radio report, but killed the rumor after Jerry Crasnick spoke to Melvin.
Rosenthal's Latest: Willis, Dunn, Griffey
2007-07-09 21:11:00
Ken Rosenthal has a new column up today.  Not too much brand new material but worth discussing nonetheless. Rosenthal opines that Dontrelle Willis is currently at his peak value.  Mark Buehrle is off the market.  Dontrelle is seemingly healthy and under control through 2009.  There was a scare, though, when Willis had a sore forearm in June.  Rosenthal points out that despite mediocre stats the past couple of seasons, Willis still has an ace aura about him.  That's probably because of his near-Cy Young in '05 and the way he took the league by storm in '03.  The Mets, Mariners, Dodgers, Red Sox, Rockies, and Diamondbacks could all be interested in the Marlins start shopping Willis.  Larry Beinfest seems to be leaning against it though. The Padres may still consider trading for Adam Dunn, but will see how Milton Bradley plays over the next few weeks first.  The Reds and Padres aren't a great match, as the Padres don't have many big-nam...
Rosenthal's Latest: Dunn, Morris, Buehrle
2007-07-01 00:09:00
Ken Rosenthal's got a new Full Count video over at FOXSports; have a look.  Trade rumors: The Padres went with the Barrett/Bradley acquisitions in part because the price on Adam Dunn was just too high.  Wayne Krivsky could get more teams involved if he exercises Dunn's 2008 option and tries to trade him in the offseason, a la Gary Sheffield.  However, unlike Sheff, Dunn has full no-trade protection until June 15th if the option is picked up.  Then on June 15th it switches to a ten-team consent list of Dunn's choosing.  The bottom line: the time to trade him is now. The Giants are listening to offers for Matt Morris, but might prefer to just keep him.  He sets an example for younger pitchers and his contract isn't terrible.  I think this would be a mistake on the part of Brian Sabean.  Morris's performance this year just seems unsustainable given his 4.5 K/9.  While I recently mentioned Jason Jennings as the best available starter aft...
Latest Dunn To Padres Rumor
2007-06-19 23:11:00
A new trade rumor has surfaced, though Kevin Towers may have already shot it down. The report on San Diego radio (specifically XX Sportsradio 1090) was that the Padres could send southpaw reliever Justin Hampson as well as groundball artist Clay Hensley to the Reds for Adam Dunn.  Kevin Towers described this rumor as "not worth chasing" to the San Diego Union Tribune's Tim Sullivan. Hampson is the only lefty in the Padres' pen, and he's allowed just two earned runs in 22.1 innings.  However, his strikeout rate is quite low and his history isn't that impressive.  The Padres insist they don't need a southpaw in the pen, but could easily bring up Royce Ring if they trade Hampson. After a breakout rookie season in '06, Hensley hasn't been able to get on track this year.  He's been battered around in 12 starts split between the Padres and Triple A.  He had a fine spring but blister and groin injuries surfaced and Hensley ended up losing his rota...
Sheehan On Adam Dunn
2007-06-16 16:55:00
Joe Sheehan of Baseball Prospectus gives his analysis on some Adam Dunn trade suitors.  And it's a free article. Is Dunn really a lightning rod for criticism in Cincinnati?  I'd like to see what those who live there think.  I feel that in this day and age Dunn is mostly appreciated for his strengths. Sheehan's top five fits for Dunn, in order of likelihood, are the Twins, Angels, Yankees, Padres, and A's.  As Sheehan alludes to, Terry Ryan and Bill Stoneman don't make this type of trade.  What's more, the Angels would have a serious logjam with Dunn.  You don't move Casey Kotchman off first, leaving the DH and left field spots for Dunn.  You'd rotate the DH spot between Dunn and Vlad, and the left field spot between Garrett Anderson, Reggie Willits, and occasionally Dunn.  Someone's losing some playing time in the deal, and Vlad is probably getting less time at DH to rest.  Use of Dunn on the field probably compromises the defen...
Adam Dunn Destinations
2007-06-15 23:31:00
Following-up on the Adam Dunn trade discussions between with the Angels, Baseball Prospectus' Joe Sheehan examines twelve teams who he believes would have the need for Dunn's bat.  He boils those twelve down to five contenders - the Padres, Yankees, Angels, A's and Twins. At the onset of Father's Day Weekend, the article is not behind the BP subscriber wall and is worth reading.  Mr. Sheehan ultimately chooses the team I mentioned at the end of this comment thread.
Adam Dunn is Not the Answer
2007-06-14 05:35:00
Newsflash, America, the Reds are once again an awful, awful baseball team. When your club is so bad they can?t even compete in the drudgery that is the NL Central, then not only is it time to abandon ship, it?s time to start selling assets like you?re Ken Lay at a pre-crash Enron. Therefore,
Scouting The Reds
2007-06-13 16:20:00
The chatter regarding Reds' left fielder Adam Dunn is picking up, and it's only June 13th.  It's looking more and more like we can add Dunn to our 2008 MLB free agents list, as his 2008 option becomes void with a trade.  Ken Griffey Jr. and various other Reds may be in play too. Five articles referenced Dunn this morning.  The Newark Star-Ledger contains just one sentence: "The Cincinnati Reds, who could be in position to trade reliever David Weathers and slugger Adam Dunn, had a scout at the [Yankees-Diamondbacks] game." One imagines the Yankees may like a number of additional Reds, including Griffey and Mike Stanton.  But the Weathers/Dunn speculation is the most reasonable.  The Reds, by the way, have yet to approach Junior about any possible trades.  While we know Griffey would probably approve a trade to Atlanta, some real creativity would be required with his contract.  And he'd have to be open to playing left field.  Buste...
Rosenthal's Latest
2007-06-05 03:55:00
Time for another Rosenthal column!  Some of this is just a writeup from his recent video; here's the new stuff. A little elaboration on the Adam Dunn to San Diego idea - Rosenthal throws Clay Hensley's name into the mix.  Hensley has had a rough couple of months, with a nasty blister, a groin strain, and some awful starts.  His 54% groundball rate would be a nice fit in Chicago or Cincinnati.  Another player I could see catching Wayne Krivsky's eye is Cla Meredith. The Cubs continue to shop Jacque Jones, hoping to slide Felix Pie in every day.  Pie is ready for the show, but the Cubs would like something to show for Jones.  He is earning $4MM this year and $5MM in '08.  It looked like a bargain after Jones hit .285/.334/.499 last year, but he's tanked in the Cubs' crowded outfield.  He could fit well with the Padres, a team that doesn't hit lefties or righties.  Jones normally just struggles with lefties.  Jacque was born in S...
Rosenthal's Latest Video
2007-06-03 08:36:00
Ken Rosenthal reeled off a slew of sweet trade rumors in a couple of videos today, which you can watch at FOXSports.  Let's discuss. Rosenthal says the Cubs won't trade Carlos Zambrano unless they fall out of contention or the big righty requests a trade.  Rosenthal finds neither scenario likely.  He says Zambrano still has a good relationship with Jim Hendry, and the Cubs still intend to sign him.  The contract remains on hold.  Interesting, but not surprising to see that the Cubs are still veering towards this mistake after what we've seen this year. Lots of good Jermaine Dye stuff from Rosenthal.  About ten days ago, the White Sox kicked around the idea of sending Dye to the Yankees for Bobby Abreu.  The Yanks covet Dye's right-handed power, and Ozzie loves Abreu, his countryman.  Rosenthal says the White Sox like the option of keeping Abreu for $16MM in '08 if they so choose.  That option comes with a $2MM buyout attached.  ...
