The rumor originated with Stan Charles, publisher of a Baltimore sports weekly called Press Box. Charles appeared on the Mark Viviano Show on ESPN 1300 Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately I did not hear exactly what Charles said - the show may be up for download on Wednesday. But the gist of Charles' rumor based on emailers who listened is that the Orioles believe Jones has a degenerative hip condition. They are trying to use this leverage to get more players for Erik Bedard. The Orioles saw firsthand how quickly a degenerative hip killed Albert Belle's career. Regarding that starter they need to add this winter...how about Johan Santana? LaRue had a post a couple of weeks ago indicating the Twins have scouted the Mariners and would start the discussion with Adam Jones. With a negotiating window, it's something the Ms would have to consider. Santana and Felix Hernandez fronting the rotation would get all of Venezuela tuning in for 40% of Mariners games. LaRue seemingly takes a shot at Jayson Stark, saying that Stark's note about a team claiming Richie Sexson and the Mariners pulling him back was false. LaRue probably did not realize the rumor started with a respected baseball writer.

Both were posting astounding numbers in the minors. Jones was hitting .314 with 25 homeruns and 84 RBI in 101 games for AAA Tacoma, and was called up after going 3-for-3 and a homer on Tuesday. While his continued pace is amazing considering his age (22), I’m still wondering how steep the development curve will be for such a young, relatively unrefined hitter. As we’ve been deked by a Jones callup before, here’s what I wrote the first time around: Jones could very well storm off and post a second half that rivals Pence?s first half, but I wouldn?t count on it. With few exceptions (Beltre, etc), guys who do that well in the majors when they are 21 turn out to be the superstars of the game. Does his potential seem generational? Hardly. The first is the average salary of $20MM per year. This bodes well for the players who are going to be free agents this winter as it sets a target for them to measure relative to their own skills. Second, it means Ichiro will remain the cornerstone of the Mariners and likely be the first player to go into the Hall-of-Fame as a Seattle Mariner.
