nightmare on turk street (health, relationships, addictions)
2008-05-19 17:06:00 I had some strange dreams last night. Not that I am trying to turn this blog sound into an exercise in dream analysis, but I often write in the morning and sometimes my dreams are “interesting” – if only to me and if only because of the subject matter.I haven’t been sleeping well. This is a normal problem for me, but it is not usually so consistent and doesn’t usually last several nights in a row. To be honest, I think I’m caught up in a vicious cycle: I’m more tired than usual during the day so I don’t do much of anything physical, and then I don’t sleep well at night because I haven’t exerted myself much during the day, so then I’m more tired than usual the next day, and then I don’t sleep well the following night … and so on and so forth.I decided to smoke some marijuana yesterday. Since leaving San Francisco last month I have been in one of my “smoking less to not a...

2008-04-25 08:24:00 Ladies and gentlemen, the following post is targeted for those living in the United States but readers from other parts of the world are welcomed to forward this posting via email to those seeking any type of information on alcohol or drug rehab programs. Your assistance in spreading this post around the world is much required and appreciated.I stumbled upon this site a few hours ago and it highlighted several great addiction treatment programs for those suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Details about this site and its drug and alcohol treatment centers however are not fully known as of time of writing. However, I do know after doing some reading earlier that their drug and alcohol treatment centers are located in Malibu, California. Please give them a call at 1-877-886-8570 and find out more about their drug rehabs and alcohol treatment programs. Alternatively, you may also send emails to info@drugsrehab.com.
Me and My Addictions
2008-04-18 18:26:00 So I have a confession to make. There are quite a few things that I'm addicted to. I don't mind, there are much worse things that I could think of that I could be addicted to.Here are 5 of my addictions in no particular order:My ipod. Really it's a sick addiction. I carry it everywhere I go and am constantly updating it. I swear if the thing ran on actual batteries, there aren't enough on the planet for mine to run as much as I use it.Vintage and Antique items. Not only do I love buying them, but I love learning about them. I was in all my glory when to a yard sale and got an entire car full of things for $3.Doritos. This is bad, I'm aware. I avoid buying them because it's not the healthiest thing in the world to eat. It's my personal drug.Clothes. I have enough clothing to clothe a few small nations. However, considering I've been trying to save more money, I've been good. I've been obsessed with clothing for as long as I can remember. My Roomba. As you read in a previous...

Addictions - Recognising an Alcoholic
2008-03-10 14:47:00 Learning that your life partner or a close friend or family member is an alcoholic can come as a severe shock. This is particularly true when you have failed to notice that anything was wrong with them over a long period. However, you shouldn't blame yourself because the nature of an alcoholic is to be secretive and devious so as not to be caught out.In some households, it is normal practice to have a couple of drinks after work, wine with dinner and maybe even a nightcap. If yours is one of those, then it is even less likely that you will notice if someone is an alcoholic. The same holds true for couples or families who socialise a lot in pubs or restaurants or other establishments, which serve alcoholic drinks. In these circumstances, if someone seems a little tipsy occasionally, the assembled company will probably pass it off as "one too many", but what's going on when "one too many" becomes a daily occurrence?Unfortunately, the signs of alcoholism differ from person to person....

Abuse in the Narcissism, Addictions, and Abuse Equation
2008-03-04 15:41:00 Can you relate to this topic because you're in a relationship permeated with your partner's narcissism, addictions, and abuse? If you have read other articles I have written at my website, you probably know by now that so often, narcissism, addictions, and abuse occur together. Perhaps you've experienced domestic violence in the form of verbal abuse, emotional abuse, economic abuse, or sexual abuse perpetuated by your spouse with his unhealthy levels of narcissism? And while there is a chance you have known the pain of physical abuse as well, as I have pointed out before, the man who is narcissistic yet successful in the work arena-though not in his family life, certainly-is not as inclined to use physical abuse as are some abusers. After all, he doesn't like to raise eyebrows when he can get what he wants through these other forms of abuse or domestic violence anyway. The Verbally Abusive Relationship is Still an Abusive RelationshipAre you inclined to minimize the amount of abu...
Treatment For Marijuana Addictions
2008-03-04 03:53:00 First up let's get one thing sorted out; marijuana addiction has no one shot treatment. There is no pot patch and there is no way to wean yourself off slowly. Treatment for marijuana addictions starts and ends in your own mind not with chemicals, substitutes or cure all pills.Marijuana has no chemical within it like nicotine in cigarettes that give the user a physical painful craving for the substance that draws them back. Pot is a different beast as your cravings come from a psychological desire for the drug, a mental want for a smoke usually in response to a trigger in your life that makes you want to escape from reality and achieve that state of being that marijuana takes you to. This is not only physically unhealthy but is a kind of rot in your soul that drains you of your will to achieve. More scientifically smoking excessive amounts of marijuana has been shown to impact on memory significantly weakening your mind and your ability to solve complex problems. So what can you do a...
Internet Addiction Graduates
2008-03-01 18:18:00 While still excluded from the DSM IV TR, Internet addiction has graduated to a subject worthy of research. And not surprisingly, like all other addictive behaviors, what I like to call "temporary feel goods", are associated with a lot of other diagnoses. Avoiding negative emotions has serious consequences, beyond even addictions. CNS Spectrums Internet addiction were more likely to have MDD, dysthymic disorder, social phobia and adult ADHD than their unaffected counterparts. Adult ADHD is the most significant predictor for Internet addiction, followed by depressive disorders. Social phobia, however, was not correlated with Internet addiction in our sample after controlling for depressive disorders and adult ADHD. Further, depressive disorders and Internet addiction were associated in the male college students, but not the females.

2008-02-21 15:24:00 I have so many things I need to improve, where do I start? That’s a great question and the answer lies within you. Addictions - Compulsive Gambling
2008-02-14 06:05:00 Gambling addiction is driven by a chemical and genetic disorder in the brain, causing a person to have compulsive behavior towards gambling. When a gambling addict gambles, they do so not to win money, but to satisfy the crippling urge inside their brain to take that chance or challenge. It satisfies their urge for excitement.Gambling is a big money-making industry in the US. The gaming industry annually nets billions of dollars, due to people spending more money each year on legal gambling. The state governments in the US promote the state lotteries in order to collect taxes on this money. While gambling was illegal in the US sixty to seventy years ago, more and more states began legalizing gambling until now all but three states are the only ones that prohibit gambling.Gambling between individuals has become popular with football money pots each week, where a person can bet on winners in the NFL games and college games. The baseball World Series each year has numerous pots with pe...
Types Of Addictions
2008-02-13 18:47:00 All addictions have the same basic symptoms; obsession, compulsion, loss of control, and continued use in the face of negative consequences. People can develop addictions to substances, behaviors or activities. Some of these behaviors or activities may be normal, everyday occurrences such as eating or shopping, which can make it much harder to determine if there is a problem with addiction. The model for addiction is changing. In the past, addiction simply referred to physical and psychological dependence on an addictive substance such as alcohol or drugs. Without physical dependence, there could not be a diagnosis of addiction. Further research has revealed that psychological dependence has much more to do with the equation than originally thought. People may become physically and/or psychologically dependent on the following substances, behaviors or activities:• Alcohol• Cocaine• Heroin• Methamphetamine• Marijuana• Shopping• Exercise• Over eating• Under eating• ...
Addictions - Behavioral Factors
2008-02-13 18:46:00 Traditionally the term 'addiction' has been used to indicate repeated and continuous use of a substance leading to physiological dependence, regardless of the social, financial and health costs; the definition of addicts was earlier restricted to people who were helplessly dependent on substances such as nicotine, alcohol, heroin or other drugs. Recently however, medical researchers and psychologists have come round to the view that addiction need not be limited to substances but can also include activities. This kind of addiction is also called behavioral or process addiction.Medical researchers believe that behavioral dependencies can be classified as addictions because these exhibit the same core components that identify chemical or substance abuse. These core identifiers are mood modifications, tolerance, withdrawal and relapse. Behavioral addictions bring on mood changes by creating an exhilarated feeling or a 'high'; the tolerance factor means that the amount of time spent...

Addictions - Television
2008-02-12 18:55:00 Television addicts are a relatively new breed, especially since television itself has only been around for about 50 years, nowhere near as long as alcohol, tobacco and drugs. But make no mistake about it, television addiction is quite real and most people don't even know that they are addicted to it.Television is different from most other addictions in that it mostly stems from something lacking in the person's life rather than from an addictive personality. The sad truth is, many people have what most of us consider empty lives. They get up, go to work, come home and go to sleep. Maybe the weekends are a little different in that they might go for a drive, do some shopping or maybe even take in a movie. But the truth is, many people's lives are quite routine and quite boring. When they walk through the door at 6 pm, or whenever it is they arrive from the office, the first thing they do is turn on the television. This is especially true if the person lives alone. But the reasons wh...

Non Drug Addictions
2007-12-29 00:00:00 Addictions gradually isolate and destroy lives. With the so called war on drugs, many times it seems that it is the only addiction we really focus on as a society. Electronic Evangelism?
2007-12-27 18:30:00 I've been reading some articles online that are discussing Evangelism, but from the safety of your own home! Groups are going out into the world of video games and preaching the gospel and the story of Jesus. One article I just finished reading is here. Churches buy the games and even bring the games into the Church to attempt to reach youth. I was reading another article were the Churches support people heading into the world of Azeroth in the game World of Warcraft to attempt to convert people towards Christianity. They had created a guild called "convert or die" and they spend most of their time messaging people in game about God. The Church of these people supported this so much, they bought 300 copies of this game to outreach people. Now I am all for Jesus, our Lord and Savior. However personally electronic Evangelism seems to me like it's just a cover - up for people who want to play the games. What's your opinion?I spent yesterday afternoon with my good friend from home. We...

"getting pissy" (relationships, addictions, society, money)
2007-12-18 19:16:00 It happens every few weeks or every few months. I feel like I can’t stand my boyfriend another minute, and start plotting to move out of the apartment in the middle of the day when he is at work. This can’t be normal. It started last week, when he told me about an incident at work where he screamed at one of his staff members in front of customers and other staff members. He works in high-end retail for bathrooms, anything from toilets to fancy tiling to jacuzzis. This mirrors the same thing he does in our relationship, only it’s not usually screaming. I call it his growling, and recently I told him he had to keep it limited to once per day. He could easily do it all day, every day. He is constantly stressing himself out, getting himself irritated, losing his patience, usually over the most insignificant stuff you could imagine. I’m tired of it, and have been for a long time—hence the new rule.I encouraged ...
"clouds" (family, addictions, mental health)
2007-12-15 16:08:00 I was telling a friend of mine yesterday about the first time I smoked marijuana with my mother. I was twenty years old. My mother disappeared when I was six and I didn’t see her again for another twelve years. It was the mid-60’s, and my father managed to get custody of all four of us in the divorce. He must have had something to show in court although from what I have been told, he also did whatever he could to drive my mother off. Or was it to drive her crazy? In any case, that’s a matter for a different post. I had gone down for the summer to live with her. I had been having various annoying financial setbacks, like care repairs and moving from on-campus to off-campus expenses, etc, and she had been helping me. It logistically made sense and, frankly, I wanted to get to know my mother better. She got me a job in a steel mill. She had already given me her car a year before; she had paid it off and ...

"disappeared" (travel, culture, addictions, money)
2007-11-24 02:02:00 i kind of disappeared for a while. i was busy with some back-to-work activities that i have been pursuing, because i know that i could work at least a little and i need to figure out how to generate some income while still taking care of my health. i also have been traveling. i had to move from my friend's house where i was staying, because he is in need of more income and wanted to rent the room. i have been to two other friends' places since you last heard from me, and now i am in brazil visiting my boyfriend for a few months. (yes, plane tickets are cheaper than rent, even if i visit him several times a year. it's just too bad he isn't rich!) and, finally, i was smoking lots of marijuana. i went into low gear, and had a hard time getting out. it's as if when i get past a crisis of sorts (the deadlines associated with my back-to-work efforts), especially if there isn't an immediate improvement in the situat...
