update on Addison
2008-05-29 00:07:00
If anyone read the post about Addison the other day and said a little prayer... thank you so much! I received an update from my friend today and here is the most important part of that email: The doctors believe with medication and careful monitoring, she will outgrow this when the antibodies eventually pass through her (hopefully in about 8 weeks or so). Until then, she is on thyroid medication and we are trying to get her levels stable enough to go home and be treated as an outpatient. The NICU doctors think that this whole process could take about two weeks in the NICU. This was not music to my ears to hear that my baby couldn't come home and wouldn't for two weeks. But the Lord is healing her with the help of an amazing NICU staff and that is quite comforting. So for the next two weeks, my days will be spent there with Addison. I am very hopeful that things will be OK! Please keep those prayers coming, folks. You gotta have faith!!

Design Patterns in Ruby (Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby Series)
2008-02-25 08:13:00
Design Patterns in Ruby is a great way for programmers from statically typed objectoriented languages to learn how design patterns appear in a more dynamic, flexible language like Ruby. Most design pattern books are based on C++ and Java But, Ruby is different and the language's unique qualities make design patterns easier to implement and use. In this book, Russ Olsen demonstrates how to combine Ruby's power and elegance with patterns, and write more sophisticated, effective software with far fewer lines of code.Design Patterns in Ruby identifies innovative new patterns that have emerged from the Ruby community. These include ways to create custom objects with metaprogramming, as well as the ambitious Rails-based "Convention Over Configuration" pattern, designed to help integrate entire applications and frameworks.Language: English - 384 pages -Format: PDFPublisher: Addison-Wesley Professional; 1 edition (December 20, 2007)more information from Amazon.comDownload
Review - Garden Spells a novel by Sarah Addison Allen
2008-02-08 15:17:00
You Can’t Judge a Book by its First Chapter. A book Review by DorlanaIt is really difficult for me to find a book that suits me. I love stories, obviously, and I love to read. Since I don’t have a lot of time to read, I have to be really picky. Which means, if it hasn’t grabbed my attention early on, I normally don’t continue. When I saw Garden Spells on the shelves in the book store I immediately wanted to read it because of the cover, the title, and the blurb. I knew for sure that this was a book that I had to read.I was so excited when I sat down and opened the book. Perhaps it was the high hopes and expectations I had put on this novel, but I was ready to toss it after the first chapter. I complained to my husband and cursed the book, “Stupid book.” But then, I did something uncharacteristic of me (with books); I gave it another chance.I read on, even struggling a bit with the second chapter. Funny thing, I had been right to judge it by its cover, title, and blurb, be...

Jim Addison: Is Mrs. Clinton Nuts
2007-12-29 13:40:00
Mrs. Clinton touts her experience, and the fact she thinks herself ready to lead our nation in a time of war.  Yet Mrs. Clinton said this, from AFP: Hillary Clinton Friday called for an independent, international probe into Benazir Bhutto’s murder, as turmoil wracking US anti-terror ally Pakistan reshaped debate in the White House race. The Democratic front-runner weighed into the crisis just six days before first 2008 party nominating contests, as candidates brandished their national security credentials following the ex-Pakistani premier’s death.”I’m calling for a full, independent, international investigation,” Clinton said in an interview with CNN. To which Jim Addison, Wizbang,  retorts “Is [Mrs. Clinton] nuts?” Such outrageous remarks should never be spoken by a United States Senator, much less by a major party Presidential candidate. She is unfit to serve in the office she now holds, and certainly unqualified for promotion.  Mrs. ...

Lowell Set to Test the Market, A-Rod Looms [Addison Quale]
2007-11-13 06:02:00
The Boston Globe is reporting that an hour away from the deadline, Lowell and the Sox still haven't reached a deal. He wants to see if there's a 4 year deal out there for him somewhere. The Sox seem intent on a 3 year deal. It seems a bit reminiscent of perhaps Pedro's departure from the Sox. I believe they offered him a 3 year deal and he spurned it for the Mets' 4 year deal. As great as Pedro was, time has shown that the Sox made the right move there. I think if they were to let go of Lowell by not offering him a 4 year deal, it'd be the right move too. He's a great guy and a very good ballplayer. But 2007 was above his ability it seems. And he ain't getting any younger. If he were to leave, that would open up speculation about A-Rod of course. I wonder what Sox fans would think about having him in Boston. Perhaps ambivalent at best. We like to think that cheering for our team is a moral thing to do. We like to think that our home team truly deserves to win because they're...

Addison Wesley - Hackers Delight - Download ebook
2007-11-05 11:00:00
This is a collection of small programming tricks that author have come across over many years. Most of them will work only on computers that represent integers in two's-complement form. Although a 32-bit machine is assumed when the register length is relevant, most of the tricks are easily adapted to machines with other register sizes. This book does not deal with large tricks such as sophisticated sorting and compiler optimization techniques. Rather, it deals with small tricks that usually involve individual computer words or instructions, such as counting the number of 1-bits in a word. Such tricks often use a mixture of arithmetic and logical instructions.Download the digital version of this book.Book info:Hacker's DelightBy Henry S. Yankees Bungle Away A-Rod, Greatest Player on Earth [Addison Quale]
2007-10-30 06:23:00
As much as I?ve ragged on A-Rod this year for being classless (and Mike Lupica skewers him today), he truly is an impressive player. You knew the Yanks were coming back when he hit that homer off of Papelbon in early June this year. You have to give him credit for what he did this year: pretty much single handedly keep the Yankees in contention and get them into the playoffs. He deserves a lot of praise for that. Does he get it? Not in NY. What is wrong with this city? Don?t they know a hall of famer when they see one? So what if the guy is a prima donna? He?s your prima donna! And he just hit 54 homers! I think Yankee fans are getting yet another dose of comeuppance for their swagger and arrogance over the years. You know why A-Rod is leaving. Because he?s had a terrible time here and can?t seem to ?win?. Even winning his second MVP in 3 years doesn?t obscure the fact that he didn?t hit 1000 homers in the playoffs. The media in NY constantly dog him for playing poorly in the postse...
BoSox at Top of World Again--Yanks Slump To Bottom, Again [Addison Quale]
2007-10-30 05:59:00
We may have just witnessed the most eventful weekend in baseball history. In one fell swoop the establishment of one dynasty was solidified just as another crumbled before our very eyes. The Boston Red Sox, a team which had led the majors for much of the year as the premier team then slumped its way into the playoffs. But just as you thought they were sleeping, they pulled out the big guns for October and finished it off by sweeping the Rockies with the biggest World Series run differential in history. It?s the second time in 4 years the Sox have taken home the title and with the same core of players. What?s even more impressive is that it looks to be the making of a dynasty as the Sox will most likely only improve at every position as this year?s team was comprised of many rookies and young pitchers. Was Lowell truly the MVP? Perhaps in a team-leader sort of way. But I think they got it wrong?just as they did in 2004. It should have gone both times to the closer: Foulke in ?04 and P...
Sox Rock Rox in Game One: 13-1 [Addison Quale]
2007-10-25 07:19:00
Are you getting tired of all these annoying alliterative titles playing around with the Red Sox and Rockies? Not me. Anyway, the Sox absolutely butchered the Rockies last night at Fenway. Do they have some sort of mystique and aura of their own now? Are they truly the new Yankees? Perhaps. But then again, didn't we just learn in the ALCS that winning game 1 handedly doesn't mean the series is over? Let's all remember that the you're only as good as your last game and that momentum lasts one game too. The Rockies are still a very good ball club and we've probably not seen the last of them.As for managerial decisions, why in the world did Beckett pitch the 7th up 12 runs? That was absurd. The Sox could have had Beckett on short rest in game 4 and save him for a game 7 if possible. Furthermore, why bring in Timlin, your third best reliever in the 8th? As the Brazilian commentators said in the 2004 ALCS as I watched the games from Minas Gerais, "He was like a paralytic mummy out th...
Sox Stun Tribe - Get Ready for Rox [Addison Quale]
2007-10-23 07:36:00
It's just amazing how the animal spirits get going when it comes to postseason baseball. After the Sox manhandled Cleveland in game 1, everyone seemed to be saying, "Well this will be easy! I wonder who we'll play in the WS?" It was amazing. The Sox won one game and extrapolated that they would win all the rest. Then, after just barely losing game 2 (by 7 runs) all of that momentum was squashed. Game 3 was lost. And then Game 4. And suddenly--or rather this became clear after game 2--the feeling was: "How do we even have a chance?? Cleveland is WAY too good!" It was unbelievable. And then, looking forward to game 5, I started thinking that Beckett is going to win this one. And if Beckett can win and bring it back to Boston, then Schilling certainly has a chance. And then if it goes to 7 anything can happen then. So really, the Sox have a pretty darn good chance here. And I turned out to be right. Anyway, baseball in the postseason is a bizarre animal. It's all about momentum. And...
Torre and Manny -- Total Opposites in Terms of Class [Addison Quale]
2007-10-21 04:06:00
What an amazing week for baseball. The Sox in the ALCS. And the Evil-Empire destroyed as we know it. It's very possible that the next 25 guys the Yankees run out on the field in the Spring of 2008 will be very different from those who played for them the last decade. Think about this: It's possible that the only holdover from the championship years will be Derek Jeter. We've seen the last of Torre--and with him probably goes Mariano, Posada. It seems A-Rod may bolt. And Clemens surely won't return. The Yankees as we know them are history. This does give me a sort of satisfaction as a Red Sox fan. It's great to see that the Yankees were stopped in their tracks after a torrid spat of WS Titles. And they were stopped in part by the Sox. But as great as it is to see this version of our foes vanquished forever, I am sad to see Joe Torre leave.Torre was one heckuva manager. He was it seems the epitome of class in terms of managers. Even as the general of our arch rivals, you have to g...

Yankees Lose! Daaaaaaa--Yankees Lose! [Addison Quale]
2007-10-09 05:45:00
--------------- As of this morning, the Yankees were very much alive. No longer. Joe Borowski, in a very Borowski-esque performance (he gave up an Abreu homer), just got the third out of the 9th inning in the Bronx and the Indians have beaten the Yankees 6-4 behind a strong pitching performance from (who else?) Paul Byrd. And so I say with great cheer to my Red Sox friends with my John Sterling impersonation, "Yankees Lose Daaaaaaaaaa-Yankees Lose!" (Columbus Day weekend is fast becoming my favorite one since the Yankees keep getting eliminated then each year.) It's been a great season for the Yankees--if you were any sort of normal baseball fan. Scoring over 900 runs. Scorching back into contention in the second-half to make the playoffs and vie for the AL East as well. MVP caliber season from A-Rod. Drama with Roger Clemens. For any sort of normal baseball fan, this would be a year to be proud of. Not the Yankees though. This will go down as a disgrace--simply...
Yankees Very Much Alive [Addison Quale]
2007-10-08 20:30:00
Yogi Berra once said, "It ain't over till it's over." The Yankees know that all too well. They played the entire 2007 regular season with that mindset. They came back and stunned the A's in 2001 after falling behind 0-2 in the ALDS. And you certainly don't need to remind them of 2004. Listening to sports radio these days and reading ESPN.com's playoff coverage, something always seems to strike me as off. Everyone wants to make predictions. Everyone seems to know how things are going to turn out. And then in the off chance that things actually turn out that way, these people clamor to say, "I told you so!" But as Billy Beane once said, the postseason is a crapshoot. And it's true. Anything can happen! And so that's why I was very surprised to hear something intelligent on ESPN radio on saturday: "What really matters in the postseason is momentum." And it's true. The Yankees have stolen the momentum from the Indians in this series. Down 0-2 they are now back in the race with a...
Don't Worry Mets Fans--Life Goes On. [Addison Quale]
2007-10-02 22:06:00
I feel for the Mets. I feel for their fans. I really do. They are my second team and I just hate to see these collosal collapses look possible as the season wears on, then more and more probable, and then watch them become the cold hard reality. That's why in May when everyone was writing off the Yanks who were out 14.5 games, I didn't join the bandwagon. Because this is one area where the STATS masters haven't mastered--the arena of high pressure situations and the human-emotional factor. Yes, the chances are slim to nil that a 7.5 game lead will not hold up with 17 games left. But when the entire confidence of a team is utterly shaken to its core, anything is possible. And the threat of loss becomes too big to ward off. But, as they say, that's why they play out the games--and not just figure out who will win on paper. Because life doesn't happen on paper. It happens out there. On a field. Stats can't really portray that much reality. But I digress--something struck me though...
The AL East: Does It Even Matter? [Addison Quale]
2007-09-20 18:02:00
First off, props to the Yankees for coming back--almost all the way--from being 14.5 games back in late May. I never doubted the fact that this team was good and knew that the Sox lead wasn't ever that safe. But, does the victor of the AL East really mean anything? Call it a case of sour grapes or what have you, but the Sox are in the playoffs. They have a 1.5 game lead on the Yankees and a 7 game lead on the Tigers with about 9 games to go. It's pretty much a sure thing. And does it really matter that much what regular season record a team ends up with as it heads into the post-season? I can recall two teams in recent memory which limped into the post-season. One was the 2000 Yankees who stumbled to an 87-74 record losing a string of games in their last week. I think we can all remember how that juggernaut of a team bowled through the playoffs to its third consecutive WS title. Then there is 2006, last year. The Cardinals were all set for the playoffs--that is until an big losing...
Maddison Gabriel - !3-Year-Old Picked As Aussie Fashion Week Model
2007-09-18 20:12:00
Well, she's tall -- 5 feet, seven inches to be exact -- and blonde, and a model. So she's supposed to be in the running to be picked as the model for Australia's Fashion Week, right?Well, she's 13. Yep. 13.And because of this, in my view, she's too young. Look, this digital instant image culture has created a market for an image like that of Maddison Gabriel, but in the process it's robbing young women of their youth. It's time to put on some breaks and install some basic restraint. Pick an 18-year old, who's an adult. Let Madison be a kid -- which is what a 13-year old is -- a little longer. I mean, come on. She looks like she's 13! What were they thinking? Well, this is going to be an interesting story, no doubt.

The Best Rivalry in Sports; And Give Props to Jorge Posada [Addison Quale]
2007-09-16 07:39:00
Did you see last night?s game between the Sox and Yanks? I?m sorry, but this has got to be the best rivalry in sports hands down. Just when we can?t imagine any more drama between these two teams, it just keeps getting better. First of all, Friday night was pretty much a disaster for Boston. Ahead 6 runs late in the game, and they can?t hold it? It?s pathetic. And as I heard one sports writer say, ?Just as the Angels are in the Yankees? heads, the Yankees are in the Sox heads.? The Yankees KNOW they can beat the Sox. And not only that, A-Rod knows he can beat Papelbon?the biggest defensive weapon the Sox have, who has been terrorizing AL hitters for the last month. So Friday?s game was huge. And then last night?s game featured the 2 winningest pitchers in the AL in Wang and Beckett. The stakes were high for that matchup and considering the Sox were still intent on breaking up the Yankees ten year stranglehold on the AL East. The game was deadlocked at 1-1 for most of the game. That i...

Programmers need to know that their code will be safe in an almost infinite number of scenarios and configurations. Static source code analysis gives users the ability to review their work with a fine-toothed comb and uncover the kinds of errors that lead directly to security vulnerabilities. Now, there?s a complete guide to static analysis: how it works, how to integrate it into the software development processes, and how to make the most of it during security code review. Static analysis experts Brian Chess and Jacob West look at the most common types of security defects that occur today. They illustrate main points using Java and C code examples taken from real-world security incidents, showing how codi...

Yanks Sweep Sox, Then Lose Momentum [Addison Quale]
2007-09-04 20:42:00
What a wild week for the Bosox and Yankee rivalry it has been. After inching back into control last week, the Sox came to Yankee Stadium with a strong 8 game lead in the division. Sox fans were smelling blood as they knew if they could just sweep this series, or even take 2 of 3, the Yanks would likely be dead for good in terms of catching up with them. But Alas-- memories from last August's Boston Massacre Part Deux came to life again. And the Yankees absolutely stymied the Sox in the Bronx behind some absolutely stellar pitching (Against Boston's best pitching no less!). If there's one Yankee I dislike the most, it's Roger Clemens. And if there's two, add in A-Rod. And if three, gimme Jeter. Well, all three took out their whuppin' sticks and had their way with the suddenly offensively-inept Boston Red Sox. After scoring 10 runs in 4 straight against the ChiSox, the Red Sox could barely bang out a hit against Wang and Clemens. And so, the Sox left with their tail between thei...
