Should Food Additives Be Put Through More Rigorous Testing?
2009-03-24 06:00:00 Going to the supermarket these days is a nightmare. Newspapers, websites, and television ads dictate what you should put in your mouths – and worse, what should be avoided. Hearsay makes you avoid products that will supposedly clog your arteries, give you cancer, or contribute to early o

Are Fuel Additives Your Answer to Higher Gasoline Prices?
2008-01-27 00:16:00 As gasoline prices have crept up over the last several years, you’ve probably been seeing more and more advertisements and websites for products that have been “proven” to increase your car’s gas mileage, improve its performance and reduce emissions. As a matter of fact, I’m sure if you look to the right or at the bottom of this post there will links to a couple of those websites on Daily Fuel Economy Tip. (Note: Don’t misconstrue that statement as me telling you to click on those links. I’m just saying that they’re probably there.) Like many things you find on infomercials and over-promising websites, these gas mileage increasing fuel additives have been met by many consumers with a suspicious eye, and for many of the products, this suspicion is rightfully justified. That being said, there wouldn’t be these commercials and websites if there weren’t people out there who were using the products, so at least some of us ha...

Can Chronic Pain come from Food Additives?
2007-12-01 06:59:00 It is always amazing to me when I find a food substance that when taken in excess can cause pain the body. And sometimes these foods, and food additives that are regulated by the government, are supposed to be safe. When I test clients and their supplements, or ask about their dietary habits, or chemicals in their work environments, we often discover chemicals or foods that are causing their chronic pain symptoms. When these chemicals are removed, much of their pain subsides. When I talk to clients, I often ask if they can decipher what foods tend make the pain worse or better, and if they crave certain foods in their diet. One of the foods I am always listening for are diet soft drinks with aspartame (Nutrasweet). From personal experience, I have been relieved of constant headaches when I was convinced to stop drinking Diet Pepsi. I was a regular user and once I stopped drinking it, the nagging headaches that I had for a long time totally cleared up. So if you are drinking diet sof...
What Additives Do You Use In Your Aquarium?
2007-11-22 19:12:00 Aquarists who run [tag-tec]fish only aquarium[/tag-tec] may not use additives at all. They are really only committed to routine water changes. Additives are mainly the domain of the reef aquarist. Even with a [tag-ice]reef aquarium[/tag-ice] the additives will depend on what livestock are being kept. Fish on the reef are the same as in the fish only system, they don’t need any. It is the corals, shrimps and certain types of algae etc that may need supplementary additives for their well being. I run a soft coral reef, which is now over five years old. Nitrate and phosphate levels are so low as to be immeasurable. The reef is pretty well stocked, not least by the growth and spread of many of the corals. It has much tiny life, and this also applies to the DSB ([tag-self]deep sand bed[/tag-self]). The corals and other life need food, of course, but certain requirements must be met for their continuing welfare, even though routine water changes are performed. As this system is ...

Aquarium Additives, Water Volume And Displacement
2007-10-27 14:29:00 I was doing my maintenance last night and was putting in a few additives. I was adding these in line with manufacturer’s instructions (adding so many ml for every so many gallons of water). I know how much water volume I have in my aquarium and sump but I am not 100% sure how much I have after displacement. I believe that displacement is quite often an area which is forgotten about when aquarists work out the water volume of their [tag-tec]aquarium[/tag-tec] and the post my father wrote yesterday got me thinking. It probably is not that big a deal, however the majority of additives base their instructions upon the water volume of the aquarium and I am sure that there are probably loads of other areas which rely upon water volume. Something to think about is that when you install anything into the aquarium it is going to displace the water – be this live rock, sand, power heads, pumps, heaters etc etc. When you look at all the extras which go into the aquarium itself how much ...

Fuel Additives And Effects On Fuel
2007-10-08 22:37:00 By Drew ShiellyWe tested a common additive, Torco, to see if it could add performance to your vehicle or increase mileage. Before discussing this product, lets first address key differences between a racing fuel and pump fuel. The one everyone thinks of is octane. Under the US octane rating system AKI (Anti-Knock Index) pump fuel is graded as (RON+MON)/2. Meaning if a fuel had a RON (Research Octane Number) of 96, and a MON ( Motor Octane Number) of 90 its AKI would be 93. Race fuels can be graded on any of the standards AKI, MON, RON. So what is octane and why is it important for performance? Octane is what gives gasoline its ability to resist pre-ignition. As displacement, compression, boost, RPM, go up it becomes harder to keep the fuel mixture from igniting prematurely. If under load or high heat, you experience knock with 87 octane, stepping up to 91 octane is logical step for both performance and longevity. If you experience no knock or timing pull at 91 there is no benefit to ...

Food Additives Linked to Hyperactivity in Children
2007-09-10 19:24:00 This is not new news, but it was reported on our local news recently that artificial food additives and coloring consumption affects children's behavior. In fact, in the 1970s, allergist Benjamin Feingold, MD, advocated a diet free of more than 300 food additives to treat hyperactivity, although his research had not been substantiated until now. Whether this information is new or not, the old adage "You are what you eat" rings true when it comes to artificial ingredients. What is new information is that this has finally been proven scientifically. It is not only children with ADHD who are affected by additives, but all children's behavior changes as a result of these substances. According to a 2004 WebMD report,British researchers found removing food additives from the diet of a group of 3-year-olds caused a reduction in the children's hyperactive behavior reported by their parents. And when the food colorings and preservatives were added back into the children's diets, the pa...

The Harmful Food Additives Debate
2007-09-08 12:30:00 There has been a lot in the news recently about the number of harmful additives in food - in particular, food aimed at children. Many of the debates have been aimed at parents and how they should be making better food choices for their children and it always amazed me how little attention was given to the companies who manufacture this food. Recent news however is now concentrating on the fact

Danger to Children from Food and Drink Additives is Exposed
2007-09-07 00:28:00 The message you just read is, at the very least, disturbing. And coming, as it does, from a reliable newspaper, the Guardian in England, it's not one that can easily be dismissed. But knowledge is power. And the article offered lots of valuable information for parents on what is happening and what they--and you--might do. ·

The main thing that worries parents, is the fact the it is believed that these food ...

Fuel Additives Can Help You Save Money On Gas
2007-08-07 09:59:00 Lately it seems that instead of there being only two constants there are actually three: death, taxes, and changing gas prices! Analysts have been predicting that this summer prices should be even higher than last year. Currently prices aren’t as high as they have predicted, but the summer isn’t over yet. So as an average consumer, ...

Aquarium Additives and Hard Corals
2007-08-03 07:22:00 The reef aquarium with hard corals (SPS) is the desire of many an aquarist. The sight of pictures on the internet and in books only serves to increase that desire. With modern aquaria and equipment, plus the knowledge gained over recent years, this desire can be met, and more easily than some suspect. It is taken as read that the need for high water quality is understood. High water quality means a proper and stable pH, between 8.0 and 8.4, nitrate less than 10 ppm (parts per million), phosphate preferably undetectable, but no more than 0.03 ppm, and ammonia and nitrite undetectable. Equipment should include a properly sized and efficient protein skimmer. Water movement, which I consider a part of water quality, should be vigorous and chaotic. There is also a need for strong lighting, the best of which is metal halide, supplemented by actinic T5 fluorescents. A greater number of T5 fluorescents can be used without a metal halide, as many as can be fitted into the aquarium including...

Aquarium Additives and Soft Corals
2007-08-02 00:52:00 Keeping a seawater aquarium nowadays is a generally straightforward affair. Provided the design and setting up is satisfactory and the aquarist does the necessary periodic maintenance properly, the aquarium will give pleasure for a long period. Commercial seawater mixes are good overall. The mix will provide adequate levels of elements in the seawater, but checks should still be made, particularly when the aquarium is matured and settling and onwards, to ensure that important parameters are as they should be.

Organic Viagra With No Additives
2007-04-03 12:54:00 Mae West's quip about a gun in the pants came true for botany enthusiast, Michael Ford, when he decided to try an infusion made from winter-flowering heather. The effect was immediate ... Viagra-like and long lasting. According to Mr Ford, he had to stay cooped up in his potting shed for an hour before being able to walk "decently" down the street.Presumably Mr Ford shares a few characteristics with Ron Jeremy. Even in a tumescent condition, there aren't too many males likely to draw the attention of eagle eyed Mae Wests. After making his stimulating discovery, Ford contacted the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh in search for a possible explanation. Turns out the winter-flowering heather contains measurable amounts of material that is an analogue of the active principle in Viagra.Michael Ford is a UK resident and when news of his discovery got out in the media, nurseries and garden centers had difficulty maintaining their supplies of the plant. Some male customers have been repor...
