2008-01-02 20:03:00 I’m not much of a PDF power user, I never really understood what the fuss is all about, until I began to learn about publishing and so on. I think PDF is a big mystery to many people, at least those who aren’t used to file formats that much. I will acknowledge the need for huge and expensive PDF editors, since this format enables publishers, writers and a host of other professions to create great documents, to the exact specifications of the press, or printer. What I don’t understand though is why I need a 22Mb download to be able to just view these files. I don’t need awesome functions, all I need is the ability to scroll through a document and to search for terms, perhaps to print if necessary. 2007-01-04 16:00:01 According to CNet, an error has been discovered the Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin for web browsers (if you don’t know, this is the application that opens when you view a PDF file through a web site). This vulnerability allows a bad guy to create a link that looked as if it came from a trusted source (like your bank, for example) but would contain some nasty JavaScript code that would run as soon as you clicked the link. This is of particular concern because the Acrobat Reader program “lives” on the user’s computer, not on the visited web site. In the past, for one to generate an attack like this, there would first have to be a flaw in a web site. Then, the bad guy would have to find that flaw and try to direct unsuspecting users to that flawed web site. But now, the process is greatly simplified because the flaw is in a program that resides on millions of individual computers.
