Adolescence Drug Addiction
2008-02-27 22:17:00
Adolescence is that phase of life when a person can be easily misled due to their credulous nature. Drug addiction shatters the dreams of such individuals and also has its effect on the near and dear ones. Adolescence is that aspect when we tend to soar high in the sky of success and never look back. The addiction to drugs shreds the wing of success making the abuser a puppet in the hands of drug substances. Since this is an impressionable age the process of weaning away from the drug substance... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

The Throes of Adolescence
2007-11-04 15:39:00
I am in the cinema awaiting 'Death at a Funeral' to start. Behind me a mother and teenage son sit, bickering. At least the son does. He is at that stage in life when every comment however bland or innocuous is a personal attack on all he holds dear. It would be a great personal relief to turn around and slap the little tike senseless, but hey, it's not like he's launching a personal attack on everything I hold dear or anything.  His mother just asked if he wants to take his shoes off. The floor is sticky, he replied. Thank God for small mercies!

The Dangers of Technological Adolescence

A brief history of scientific "progress" in human experimentation.A diorama showing Japanese researchers testing biological weapons on villagersin Ping Fan, China during the 1930s.(This post has also been picked up by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Join the debate at their blog or in the comments below.)Perhaps it?s because today is overcast or perhaps it?s due to the generalized sense of self-reflection I feel on this morose day. But as we champion ?economic progress? beyond all other concerns (including the integrity of our ecosystem) it?s only appropriate that I take a good, long look in the mirror at the ugly history behind ?scientific progress?. The legacy of cruel experimentation on primates is well documented and ongoing. But the history of scientific experimentation on unwilling human subjects should warn all wide-eyed science enthusiasts about the costs of placing progress above all other concerns.Recently the abused orphans of the University of Iowa ?Monster Study?...
Occasional crystal meth use in adolescence can accelerate the progression o
2007-08-19 18:20:00
Even occasional crystal meth binges during adolescence may accelerate the progression of brain aging diseases decades later in life. Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina looked at the long term behavioral deficit effects of binge crystal meth use in an animal study; and they found that a single binge administration of crystal meth in adolescent rats with a predisposition to develop a Parkinson's like disease led to an accelerated presentation of this disorder a few months later, when the rats were approaching old age. The rats in the study had a gene sequence altered presentation of the Parkinson's causing GDNF protein. This protein, which repairs and restores dopaminergic cells in the brain, was less present in the genetically altered rats, as the protein is less present in humans predisposed to the development of Parkinson like neuro muscular conditions. The rats that were given the dose of methamphetamine developed the neuro muscular symptoms of the disease m...
Acne in adolescence: What’s happening?
2007-04-11 03:54:00
What causes the acne? The majority of people who suffer from acne will have it at the beginning of adolescence. In this period, skin secretes a fatty substance called sebum (or oils). Certain people have too many coetaneous cells “lubricating”. At those, which suffer from acne, these cells mix with oil and block the follicles of the skin. The blocked pores imprison bacteria in the follicles; cause an ignition and give rise to pimples. The small red pimples can become pustules or even cysts. What can worsen the acne? Cosmetics containing oil, solar lotions, gel for hair Stress and strong emotions like the the anxiety and the fear Menstruations in the girls To grip or scrape the acne To rub the skin stronglyWhat does not cause the acne ? Sexual activity Dirtiness FoodWho suffers from acne? Both boys and girls suffer from acne, but it can be more serious among boys because their skin is more oily. Other factors also affect growth of the acne. Heredity plays a big role. If one of yo...
