Advaita Vedanta

Maya, Advaita Vedanta with Remez Sasson
2010-03-27 22:56:00
The five senses make us feel that the world is real. Seeing the solidity of the objects around us, feeling the impact of the senses, it is hard to deny the validity of what we see. Everything looks real and we never stop to question this reality. The mind is attached to the five senses and accepts everything as real without questioning. When we bump into a table or a wall and we feel pain, it is difficult to say that we are imagining it. When we see with our eyes, hear sounds, smell, or when we feel heat or coldness, we accept these sense impressions as real. Some say that the world is an illusion, Maya in Eastern terminology. Can we accept this when everything looks so real? Can we regard the world as imagination? We need the five senses and the mind to be conscious of the world, which means that the world is dependent on them. Without the senses and the mind the world does not exist for us.If we say that a real thing is something that always exist with no gaps, then the outside world...

Most Former Sathya Sai Devotees Respond Without Hatred
2009-09-26 01:40:00
Here is a quite typical note from a defender of Sathya Sai Baba, and the reply from one who is no long partial to him. The writer had written a number of emails to the recipient, who did not retaliate to any of the points. Some of the language of the other emails was couched more unkindly than anything in the following. The former devotee responded because of the basic decency and sincerity of the person who wrote:
Brian Steel On John Hislop?s 27 Years as Sathya Sai Baba?s Spokesman
2009-07-18 02:07:00
In my recent note Brian Steel On Sathya Sai Baba?s Credibility Gap. John Hislop Contributions, I drew attention to Brian Steel's scholarly article which deals with a seminal figure, Jack Hislop, in the spread of the Sathya Sai Baba movement: Sathya Sai Baba?s credibility gap: Contributions by John Hislop. (Brian Steel January 2009). Steel refers to the controversial Walter Cowan ?resurrection? in 1971, mentioning the refuting evidence presented by Professor Erlendur araldsson , B. Premanand, (the late) Professor Dale Beyerstein. For decades, these critical points met with no satisfactory explanations from the Sathya Sai Baba camp, and yet a great number of devotees rejoice in this so-called miracle of resurrection, as they do in so many 'miracles' of their guru, which, however, keep on being disproved by film footage of excellent provenance
Brian Steel On Sathya Sai Baba?s Credibility Gap. John Hislop Contributions
2009-07-16 01:58:00
In some ways, it is regrettable that scholarly habits can limit readership. It is fortunate that Brian Steel writes clearly. His background is in academic studies and teaching at a leading Australian university. His fairly lengthy January 2009 piece Sathya Sai Baba?s credibility gap: Contributions by John Hislop deserves to see light of day. One might well think that thoughtful readers who still adhere to Sathya Sai Baba would, nonetheless, still be among Steel's appreciative readers. Other readers who likely to find value in Steel's writing would surely include those who have left the Sathya Sai Baba fold who appreciate historic overviews of the movement of which they have been a part. The calmness and balance of the writing are key strengths.
Sathya Sai Baba?s Former Devotees. A Personal Note
2009-04-06 00:55:00
Against a formidable instinct in human nature, most former devotees have, for not far short of two decades, refrained from striking back at those who have so massively vilified and defamed them.

Shirdi Sai Baba and Sathya Sai Baba
2009-01-04 19:02:00
Drawn by deep alienation from Western materialism, and the attraction of a timeless Indian spirituality, especially in regard to respect for other beings irrespective of race, caste or creed, I lived for a number of years around Sathya Sai Baba. I had also a great love for Shirdi Sai Baba
God in everyone, everything - Sai Baba
2009-01-03 12:26:00
?God is in everything, everything is God? is the central alleged ?truth? in various teaching by Indian gurus, swamis and other self-styled divine beings. It underpins much of Hinduism and the ideas involve, when abstracted to a high degree, forms the backbone of Advaita Vedanta. It is at the core of the so-called ?teachings? of ...
?No fear of bombs? in India, Said Sai Baba a Week Before Mumbai Terrorist A
2008-12-01 00:13:00
While India's and the world's self-promised 'Saviour' potters and dithers, just as the Emperor Nero fiddled while Rome burnt. A little more than a week before the horrendous terrorist strike on Mumbai, Sathya Sai Baba made yet another of his statements which have been tragically faulted by events seen by an aghast world only a few days later (and, in fact, all along, by a long series of terrorist attacks in India - extraordinarily overlooked by Sathya Sai Baba in his reported statement

Ex-NASA Scientist and Wife Test Sathya Sai Baba?s ?Grace?
2008-11-09 01:48:00
Referring in their talks to Jaani Drucker's rape in an official Sathya Sai Center, they both held that Jaani is not her body. She is only in a dream. Not being her body, but the eternal Atma, Jaani was never raped. All is the Lord's Grace
?World Hindu? by 2030. VHP?s Singhal Reports Sathya Sai Baba Told Him

A Strong India Can Bless The World
2008-06-20 20:07:00
In my years in India, I saw at close hand the work of one talented and highly motivated Indian group with which I did volunteer social work, attaining that deep wish fired ever since I was 16, when I became deeply inspired by the life of Mahatma Gandhi. The founder of the work (who sought no ...
Supercool Indian Gurus Under Fire
2008-05-22 14:13:00
The following readings indicate two-way pulls occurring in India - towards gurus and the extraordinary power many of them have, down millennia, wielded, and away from them. The article, by Jeremy Page, features criminal allegations, made against Himaval Maheswara Bhadranandaji. The current guru furore has reached prominence in The Times, May 21, 2008. It headlines: Money ...
Sai Baba World Cult Leaders Fail To Meet Concerns on Libel
2008-05-16 02:54:00
The excerpts in color orange below are from a communication addressed by JuST, an internationally networked group of former devotees of Sathya Sai Baba, to key officials of the International Sathya Sai Organization. The leaders have singularly failed, year after year, to meet deep concerns of many former - and indeed of ...
William Aitken?s Book Fails to Answer Sai Baba Critics

Sai Baba To Be Seen In Moon? But Where Was Moon?
2007-10-26 06:28:00
Today’s blog suggests that Sai Baba has, leave aside his recent would-be moon sightings, not been particularly bright himself. And how can he be so when the evidence - that can less and less be hidden from his rank-and-file devotees - suggests that he now suffers from senile dementia? He has not selected the brightest moon, nor  a cloudless ...

Is Humanity One Big Cult?
2007-10-13 12:16:00
There is a fundamental mistake that defenders of those accused of serious abuse keep on making. Accusations of substantive abuse do not have to be proved. They have to be investigated. An organization that does not have genuine policies and practices of transparency and accountability is per se condemned. Many Exposés of Cults Reveal Same Abuses and Rationalizations Statements ...
Muslim Leaders Initiative Bold. Sai Baba?s Efforts Fail
2007-10-12 15:22:00
An extraordinary cross-section of mainstream Muslim clerics, theologians and academics have acted in a way that Sai Baba and his mega wealthy worldwide cult have profoundly failed to act. This failure needs to be made very clear within the interfaith movement. The members of the Sathya Sai Organization which has attempted to interact with it, can be challenged to ...
Sai Baba Fails To Appear In Moon, IANS Reports
2007-10-05 02:26:00
In the last hours, many Sai Baba devotees have received yet another of many setbacks to expectations that he would perform, as he has so many times promised, this or that great miracle. Of course, my dear reader may have noticed that at least Sai Baba’s afro hairdo has been seen quite clearly on the moon on ...
Indian Gurus Stifle India?s Chance To Excel
2007-10-01 09:21:00
Intense and blind faith in gurus, such as one finds endemic in India, shames a great many of her otherwise educated individuals, including scientists. It jeopardizes her opportunities to gain unstinting international respect. Guru Worship Still flinging themselves passionately at the feet of gurus, and worshipping them as God incarnate, they ignore the gurus’ absurd pronouncements on matters scientific. This ...
Why Might There Be Religious and Political Disconnects?
2007-09-25 10:40:00
These short extracts from Shantanu Dutta’s article, Power of godmen, can provide a stimulus for discussion on the issue - are godmen (and godwomen, one supposes) beneficial or baneful or an intriguing mixture of both? (see extract below) Of a statement by TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samithi) president K. Chandrasekhara Rao, Dutta says:  “Apparently (it) indicates that in the political mind ...
Caught In One Of History?s Most Powerful Cults (3)
2007-09-16 11:59:00
An “Us” and “Them” Culture In many cults the sense of ‘family’ is cultivated. Sai Baba devotees commonly speak of “the Sai family”, “Sai brothers and sisters”. I used to like this practice myself, because it went with feelings of shared love of the spiritual teacher and of activities such as social service, singing together, sharing experiences ...
Robert Priddy (3) Friendship With V.K. Narasimhan
2007-08-30 04:37:00
Robert Priddy says that he found some devastating facts from one of Sai Baba’s very closest confidants in the 1980s and 1990s. This was V.K. Narasimhan (d. March 2000). This remarkable man, whose history of standing courageously up (many fine citizens were flung into jail!) as a newspaper Editor to Indira Gandhi during the 21-month 1975?1977 ...
Robert Priddy (2). The Protection of the Young and Innocent
2007-08-22 11:29:00
Disaffection from a powerful belief system is often a slowgoing process, particularly when there has been adherence to a charismatic figure. And this, moreover, when many followers experience states difficult to understand for those who undergo them as it is for even sympathetic scientists. Going on then, to expose to the public an institution’s and ...
Truth Commission Model May Assist Sai Baba Devotees
2007-08-19 11:56:00
Other group leaders from various countries who we know to have been informed that Sai Baba sexually abuses boys and young men still take groups of all ages to see him. There is repeated evidence that they still do not inform parents of global allegations concerning Sai Baba, nor that highly respected individuals, once loved ...
Robert Priddy (1). Erosion of Trust in Sai Baba Over Time
2007-08-18 11:31:00
Robert Priddy was long known by many as a ceaseless worker in the Sathya Sai Organisation, as indeed he has been in the former Sai Baba devotee cause. The latter - since people from many countries are affected and since billions pour to the Sathya Sai Central Trust globally -  is one of exposure of various ...
India Lead World? Sai Baba Says Yes. Robert Priddy No
2007-08-13 04:53:00
Sai Baba has many times said that, as a result of his appearance as the Avatar of all avatars (divine incarnations), India will lead the whole world in spirituality and the peace of mankind, and that he will guide this whole process, to be essentially accomplished in his own lifetime.                               Robert Priddy has some terse words ...
Sai Baba No Shiva. Gold From His Gut Is Regurgitator?s Trick
2007-08-05 05:08:00
Within Hinduism, the Shiva lingam can represent the wonder and majesty of creation-dissolution, a symbol of limitlessness. See Wikipedia, under ‘Lingam‘:  ‘The term lingam is sometimes used synonymously for shivalingam or sivalingam a specific type of icon or altar representing the god Shiva’ In Sanskrit, this object is often called a lingodhbhava. In India, especially in the south, ...
Criticism of Sai Baba No Reflection On Hinduism
2007-07-24 23:47:00
Many Sathya Sai Baba devotees assume that any questioning of him equates to a denunciation of Hinduism. However, Hindus at large do not make this assumption in the least. A major national Hindu leader has emailed me (December 5, 2006) in the terms I quote below. (Except to those in the responsible media who may wish to ...
Some Key Cultic Responses To Critics
2007-07-23 23:28:00
I think that the following list - which is suggestive rather than exhaustive - will contain pointers to behaviours repeatedly found by any who expose a powerful cult. * Legal manipulations, so that a leader or his organization cannot be further proceeded against * Use of a cult’s considerable financial resources and political, religious or civic clout to ...
Cost Of Cover Ups Can Far Exceed Hoped-for Benefits
2007-07-22 21:48:00
A great irony of cover-ups is this - that once they have been exposed, the initiators of the abuses sustain a cost far greater than would have attended the prompt admission of the initial misdeeds - and genuine, exhaustive measures to address the abuses. Tragically, “cost” may be multiply defined - and in far from money terms ...
Judge warned: Crippling disease won?t stop pervert
2007-07-21 04:52:00
Some devotees of Sathya Sai Baba - the ’God’ worshipped by so many of India’s top power brokers (and others beyond) who faces worldwide accusations of large-scale, serial sexual molestation of boys and young men - claim that he could not possibly offend, if he ever did, because of his age and physical incapacity, and that therefore his current ...
Sai Baba?s ?Miracles? Panned In Newsweek
2007-07-18 23:08:00
From his observations of YouTube footage, in a Newsweek debate, Sam Harris opines that Sai Baba’s so-called miracles reveal him to be “a stage magician”. This view accords with that of many former Sai Baba devotees - who speak out about it - and of many devotees - who shut up about it. You can see ...
The Decline and Fall of the Showman Empire
2007-07-10 03:06:00
Sai Baba’s ’showman empire’ is worth many highly unaccountable billions. Frequently, they pour to his Sathya Sai Central Trust from your country and mine. (See Rediff.com reference in my note, Sai Baba Exchequer Worth Billions. Many Countries Donate) Media Empires Are More Effective R to L. Media mogul’s mogul Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, a slight competitor, (Jane Fonda’s ...
A Duke Stops An Emperor. Edinburgh Routs Sai Baba
2007-07-09 02:32:00
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh is pictured before and after his harrowing linking with Sathya Sai Baba It is intriguing to find that a mere Duke can stop an Emperor in his tracks. To their considerable cost, the “secret swami” - as the BBC (see HERE for video footage) has called India’s and the world’s would-be Emperor Sai Baba, the ...

When ?Divine? Magnetism Becomes A Dead Weight
2007-07-06 04:30:00
Sai Baba’s alarmingly many scientist and other (supposedly) intellectual followers must have to block ears and eyes when he opines on matters scientific. Heavily rose-tinted glasses can be particularly helpful. He speaks, for example, of the nature of magnetism. Here, Sai Baba’s educated devotees provide a modern example of the Hans Christian Anderson story of the Emperor New Clothes ...
If Not For Whistleblowers
2007-07-04 07:10:00
(Tal Brooke front left) In 1970, in the U.K., Tal Brooke published Lord of the Air, which, evidently because Sai Baba’s people have such political clout, was banned in India. It was re-written and published as Avatar of Night. Paperback: 400 pages. End Run Publishing; December 15, 1999. ISBN: 193004500X. During the fourteen months that Brooke lived close to ...
?Marriage Mart? - Are Known Sex Abusees Disadvantaged?
2007-06-30 01:19:00
Witnesses Speaking Out On Sex abuse. Opportunities? Obstacles? Getting those of Sai Baba’s ex college boys and staff, with whom we have had contact over time, to speak out publicly has proven difficult. Indeed, in our own movement of exposure, except around 2000, encouraging Sai Baba’s abuse survivors, no matter what their country or culture, has been hard. At  ...

Wealthy Americans Prepare Mansions For ?God?s? Visit
2007-06-25 02:15:00
The English poet Alexander Pope had an exquisite appreciation of situations like desperate devotees clinging to forlorn hope in the face of Sai Baba’s many broken promises to visit places, like Rome, Southern California, the UK, Malaysia, etc,: Hope springs eternal in the human breast: Man never is, but always To be Blest Below is an email from a foremost Sai Baba critic, ...
