Do Boys Need Affirmative Action?
2008-04-08 06:00:00 The recent issue of Time has an article about de facto affirmative action for boys. I know that, "affirmative action," is one of those hot-button terms that immediately starts arguments and can cause bad feelings, nausea, dizziness, incontinence, and hair loss, so it's probably important to identify just what, exactly, is being referred to as affirmative action in this case. To put it simply, boys (as you know) are slipping behind academically, and are making up an ever-dwindling proportion of college undergraduates. The current national average when it comes to the undergraduate population is about 57-58% female--though it is expected to climb to a 60-40 split in the next several years. Colleges--which still need to attract students, after all--have taken to admitting boys with lesser academic credentials over girls with stronger academic records in order to keep the student population somewhat balanced (or more diverse, if you find the word, "diverse,...

Abolish Affirmative Action?
2008-03-08 16:06:00 Affirmative action ban heads for ballot in 5 states - CNN.com Ward Connerly, who heads the American Civil Rights Coalition -- a nonprofit organization working to end racial and gender preferences -- and the main backer of the ballot initiatives, says the 37 word initiative would read: "The state shall not discriminate against or grant preferential treatment to any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education or public contracting."I'll admit this is a concept I have mixed feelings about. I have often defended Affirmative Action as a necessary evil. I grew up in a predominately white neighborhood, and am a white male. I have never competed for coveted positions in jobs or education so I have never benefited from or been harmed by Affirmative Action. While I have had a few friends of different ethnic backgrounds I have never known anyone who was harmed by or benefited from Affirmative A...

The Affirmative-Action Campaign
2008-03-05 00:00:00 -By Thomas E. Brewton Senator Clinton's campaign emphasis on skill and experience is out of harmony with affirmative action, in which diversity is the prime criterion. My friend Jon Gardner observed, I believe accurately, that the Democratic presidential primary has been driven by the same sort of feelings that impel businesses and ...

Study: Affirmative Action does NOT work in Law School
2007-10-16 19:46:00 Thanks to Fox News via AboveTheLaw.com. A recent study published by Stanford Law Review, authored by UCLA Law Professor Richard Sander says no, and demands that the California Bar release its data related to student test scores, law school admissions, and bar passage rates.According to the article: Currently only about one in three African-Americans who goes to an American law school passes the bar on the first attempt and a majority never become lawyers at all," says UCLA law professor Richard Sander. In an article published in the Stanford Law Review, Sander and his research team concluded several thousand would-be black lawyers either dropped out of law school or failed to pass the bar because of affirmative action.Sander's claim, the so-called "mismatch effect", is that students who are unprepared and whose academic credentials are below the median, under affirmative action, are admitted to law schools they are unqualified to attend. They then do poorly and do not graduate or pa...

Is Affirmative Action Fair?
2007-05-26 06:52:00 America has a history of racial discrimination, three and a half centuries of maltreatment of its racial minorities. America’s history of racial discrimination in both the public and private sectors, from top to bottom. Discrimination either given official government imprimatur or otherwise condoned and permitted. For generations blacks were denied employment opportunities and chances for advancement, or denied admission into institutions of higher education. After decades of struggles in the courts and streets of this country, after countless deaths of persons demanding that the country live up to the ideals espoused in its most sacred founding documents, the courts of this country determined that, pursuant to law, a remedy was needed to address the long-standing wrongs of racial discrimination. From its English heritage, America jurisprudence mandates that when a wrong has been established, a remedy is appropriate. Often, fashioning the remedy is as difficult a struggle as was es...
on affirmative action
2007-03-26 01:00:00 It has been a while since my last post mainly because I've been kept busy with work. The past couple of weeks have also been spent doing some serious thinking, personal assessment and life planning.I've been getting into a lot of extremely stressful and depressing situations lately and it apparently has caused undesirable effects on my health and personal well being. I'm glad that I have Conne to support and guide me throughout this slump.I learned that you shouldn't just sit around and mope about the negative things that happen to you. You should act on it and confront the problem or at least figure out a way to work around it. Which is exactly what I am going to do. So, here's to affirmative action! :)
Cultural Affirmative Action
0000-00-00 00:00:00 -By Selwyn Duke In a way, I prefer the old, overt affirmative action. While it was government-sanctioned discrimination, at least it was, in some measure, more honest than our cultural affirmative action. There is such a thing. It’s when people in the market and media privilege others – sometimes unconsciously – ...
