The exception to the African-American rule?
2011-07-29 19:24:00  I’m sorry that I don’t meet your low brow expectation…  YES, I know there is a growing census (among other ethnic groups) that countless African Americans in Chicago don’t know how to act! We are loud, rude, ghetto hustlers who apparently have been raised by wolves’ right? I know the impression that we MUST give...

Danny Davis Quits Chicago Mayor Race, Leaves One African American in Race
2011-01-01 03:33:00 -By Warner Todd Huston The theme of the race for mayor has thus far been twofold. One, will Rahm Emanuel be allowed to stay on the ballot, and two, will there be too many African Americans in the running effectively splitting the black vote all to pieces allowing Rahm to waltz in unopposed? When we started this off a few months ago there were four black candidates. Rep. Danny Davis, former Senator Carol Moseley Braun, Reverend James Meeks, and the least known of the pack William "Doc" Walls. Since then we've seen several of these candidates drop their bid, leaving two. First to fall was James Meeks and now the Sun-Times is reporting that Danny Davis has also given up...

Chicago Mayoral Election: Crowded African-American Field Won't Help
2010-11-15 23:04:00 Chicago Mayoral Election: Crowded African-American Field Won't Help As the the candidates line up for the Chicago Mayoral Primary, one thing is certain, African-American voters may very well lose out. The so-called Black Caucus consensus pick, Congressman Danny Davis has not deterred Illinois State Senator James Meeks and former U.S. Senator Carol Mosely-Braun from throwing their names into the fray. The big question, though, is it smart?

Is Governor Quinn Dangling Peotone Airport For African-American Vote?
2010-09-14 02:56:00 Is Governor Quinn Dangling Peotone Airport For African-American Vote? The Herald News reported, on Saturday, that our clueless governor wants to give full control of the proposed Peotone Airport to Jesse Jackson Jr. and his ALNAC (Abraham Lincoln National Airport Commission) Group. It seems that Illinois Governor Pat "Huckster" Quinn is pandering for African-American votes again.
White House Veggie Garden Inspires African American Gardeners, Seed Company
2010-01-08 03:46:00 Beyond the Obama head planter and the Chia Obama, the First Family has created an interest in gardening among many, but among African Americans in particular. "We had a lot more gardeners last year," said Dr. Shemuel Israel, President of the North Lawndale Greening Committee on Chicago's West Side. He credits the recession and First Family with the sudden interest in gardening and urban agriculture in the neighborhood. The enthusiasm was not always so high. In 2005 when the North Lawndale Greening Committee reached out to older members of the community for help with programs tailored to neighborhood youth, there was a feeling of reluctance by some who felt they had already done their fair share of farming. Many opted...
African-American visibility in advertising, Chicago's Commonground bus
2009-11-22 12:04:00 Photo courtesy of FoxBrownFox PR, Ahmad Islam (left) Sherman Wright (right) A commercial is a food or bathroom break for me. I usually don't pay attention to advertisements, but in the past few months I've noticed a pattern in marketing. It's not just the Walmart or McDonald's commercials. I'm seeing it in Tide, Pine Sol, Sprite, Lever 2000, Crest and the Roomplace commercials too. I'm seeing a boost in advertising visibility with African-American families, especially African-American fathers. I wonder if advertising agencies are starting to get the hint about diversity in marketing or did President Barack Obama's family have something to do with the diversity, but either way I love it. It's nice to see multiculturalism on camera....

2009-10-23 00:40:00 RushmoreDrive.com logo While working on a freelance project today about Afrocentrism, I got ready to visit RushmoreDrive.com when I saw it redirecting to a site called Life123.com. After clicking on it a few more times, I finally used Google to find out whether there was a name change for this first-ever African-American focused search engine. I was disappointed to read on Huffington Post's Web site that RushmoreDrive.com was shut down on Friday, June 12 by InterActiveCorp (IAC)....
African-American Chicago Entrepreneurs inspire potential new business owner
2009-09-20 03:33:00 On Aug. 25, I attended an annual Chicago Women's Entrepreneur networking event, courtesy of Sr. Account Executive Robert F. Wimberly II, and met so many women business owners and aspiring women business owners, including fashion experts, internship recruiters, lawyers, health experts and bank owners. When I was in college, I helped write and edit a business plan for a Chicago music company called MidWest Incorporated, and the more I talked to the owner, Phillip Cavil Sr., the more intrigued I became at owning my own business someday. And my favorite restaurant in all of Chicago is Quench!, owned by Quentin Love. I'm fascinated with those who are brave enough to branch out and start their own company--from hiring employees to...

African American Beauty Perspective
2009-08-12 05:06:00 I am a dark-skinned African American woman with features that reflect my ancestry. Debates regarding Light vs. Dark and other biases have plagued our race for years and continues to impact millions of Black women. The deeply rooted intra-racial contempt that lies beneath this inane "compliment" is the reason I've chosen to spark dialogue surrounding the topic of self-hatred in our culture. It saturates every aspect of our lives, dominating the perspectives of our generation as a whole. We culturally are so influential, at times inadvertently, that we affect all with the words we utter and the images we portray. It lends to the theory of systemic racism. I'm authoring this piece because I'm miffed by this reality and would like to share my views on these subjects. I read "She's Pretty for a Dark-Skinned Girl..." by Tameka J. Raymond with concern and was wondering if anyone can see change coming in the perspective...

Best African American Blogs 2008
2008-12-01 09:36:00 Rose Jackson-BeaversI am a writer?s writer and that simply means that I love reading the written words. This includes anything from magazines, books, Bibles, newspapers and blogs. Blogging is an online personal diary written on or at a website and frequently updated for public viewing. It is a web journal where people who are called bloggers write about anything they want. Most bloggers write about things that move them such as love, sex, good books, gossip about television stars, family issues and musicians. Blogs can serve as a creative form of communication between writers and responders as well as a means of self-expression for those individuals who are merely seeking a sounding board. I enjoy blogging and have met some amazing blogging friends. Many of them share my love of the written word. We leave comments back and forth on each other?s blogs.Bloggers may come and go, but more often than not, they return since writing stimulates us in one way or another. It is easy to stop b...

Repost: Creating the African-American Superman
2008-11-20 04:43:00 A History of Der Huxtable's ReignBill Cosby absorbed quite a bit of flak for criticizing the media creation of "black culture" for endorsing gangsta behavior, obscenity, laziness and selfishness. Far smarter than the average person, Cosby represents the prototype of a new African-American: the intelligent and mobile critical thinker.Suppose for a moment that Bill Cosby used his millions to buy up a cable network and create a new kind of black propaganda. "We will create the African-American Superman," Cosby says, "who will replace this tedious gangsta rap baggy-pants culture with something better."Overwhelmingly, he is elected. His first move is to seize all black press establishments and entertainment outlets. "Only the best media for our youth," he says to wild cheers. "We're going to keep the poisonous usurpers out." Next he takes over the educational system, designing a uniform and a challenging curriculum for black schools.Cosby socializes most industries among the African-Am...

Obama Becomes the First African American Presidential Nominee
2008-06-04 05:05:00 Tuesday night, Barack Obama clinched the Democratic nomination for president to become the first African American presidential nominee from a major party. Throughout the day Obama received the endorsements of enough unpledged superdelegates and enough pledged delegates from South Dakota and Montana, to reach the 2,118 delegates he needed. Senator Clinton could only watch as superdelegates came forward during the day for Obama uniting behind the likely nominee. Obama chose the city that will host the Republican National Convention this summer as the home of his victory speech on Tuesday. Obama spoke before a ruckus crowd of diverse people inside of a packed arena of more than 17,000 in St. Paul, Minnesota. ?You chose to listen not to your doubts or your fears, but to your greatest hopes and highest aspirations. Tonight, we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another ? a journey that will bring a new and better day to America. Because ...

Woman versus African-American
2008-04-06 18:58:00 By VictorM:Is the USA ready for either a woman or an African-American to be president? I am of two minds about the question itself. On one hand it's sad that the question is even asked, but given where we have been, it is good that question is being asked seriously because for the first time ever we have a candidate from each group with a realistic shot of winning (even if Hillary's chances are now fading). So, how do Americans feel about this race and gender issue?A poll by CNN and Essence magazine released Thursday found that Americans believe the country is more ready to elect an African-American president than a woman...The good news is that the vast majority of voters think the country is ready for either a woman or an African-American. But I was sad to see lower support for a woman -- though after this campaign, I wasn't surprised. I think it's clear that Hillary Clinton has suffered more sexist abuse than Barack Obama has experienced overt racism this year: men yelli...
