The AfterShock For Kenechi Udeze
2008-02-13 15:36:00
Jessie Gruman , PhD, who has personally survived four life-threatening diagnoses, is the author of AfterShock: What to do When the Doctor Gives You – or Someone You Love –- a Devastating Diagnosis and President of the Center for the Advancement of Health . Guest Blogger Jessie Gruman--News that Minnesota Vikings defensive end Kenechi Udeze has leukemia generated a spate of messages wishing him in his coming battle against the blood cancer, which is not as devastating a diagnosis as it once was. The survival rate has tripled during the past 40 years.Nevertheless, the shock of news of a serious illness can really knock you for a loop: shock that your plans are shattered, fear of pain, sadness at the suffering your illness causes those you love and fear that you might lose your life, even with such an optimistic prognosis. And in the midst of this maelstrom of emotion following a serious medical diagnosis, every patient must make decisions that are vital to their future...
How To Find Help In a Hospital
2007-11-29 13:30:00
You are admitted to the hospital. What can you expect? Entering the hospital can be a nerve-wracking experience, basically because we’re afraid. Will I get sicker by possibly developing an infection? Can the specialist see me right away? What if the nurse gives me the wrong medicine and I die? Will the treatment hurt? Jessie Gruman, Ph.D., founder and President of the Center for the Advancement of Health, and author of AfterShock: What To Do When the Doctor Gives You—or Someone You Love a Devastating Diagnosis, knows what it’s like to enter the hospital. She’s had cancer and a dangerous heart condition, and has lived to write about the experience. First, if possible, Dr. Gruman recommends having a relative or friend stay with you during the day and if necessary at night too while in the hospital. This may waylay a medical error and can make up for a hospital’s short staffing. Recently, I visited my uncle in a Michigan hospital. ...

A Life-Threatening Diagnosis--What To Do
2007-10-05 18:32:00
Recently, I posted an article titled "I Hate Cancer," chronicling my father's diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. While still in shock, my family struggled to find answers and a positive supportive doctor.   An informative book I highly recommend to others in a like situation is AfterShock: What to Do When the Doctor Gives You--or Someone You Love--a Devastating Diagnosis, by Jessie Gruman, Ph.D.Dr. Gruman is the founder and president of the Center for the Advancement of Health, and independent, nonpartisan Washington-based policy institute.  The center works to help people use good scientific information when making decisions about their health and health care.  Most importantly, Dr. Gruman herself has received blowing shocks from doctors after being diagnosed with cancers and a heart condition.AfterShock is for anyone who has received a negative diagnosis of AIDS, cancer, ALS, HIV, Alzheimer's disease, MS, or any other life-threatening co...

The Day After
2007-05-30 03:14:00
Today is one of my least favorite days of the year. Actually I guess all Tuesdays following a three-day holiday weekend are. I can tell you one thing for sure ? whoever invented the shirt collar and the tie obviously never spent three straight days playing and working in the sun! I think I may now permanently have a red neck. In fact, without even realizing it, I parked my truck up on the front lawn yesterday. I guess the symptoms of my red neck crept up on me slowly. After all, I watched NASCAR (Jeff Gordon crashed and was relegated to a 41st place finish ? woo hoo) and smoked ribs on the grill while Lucy and Ethel played with our dog Mabel this weekend. I didn?t really connect all the dots until my neighbors asked me if I was going to keep my truck where I had parked it. Me yelling at the neighbors and mumbling something about gettin? my danged old shot gun outta the house was what really made me notice how red my neck had become. I don?t think anyone named Aloe or Vera can help m...

Stumbled On Her Husband?s Porn Stash After 18 Years: Saturn Transit to 8th

Dear Elsa, Basically I have lost trust in my husband since discovering his secret use of porn a year and a half ago. I have been with my husband for 18 years and married for 12 of them. We have two boys 13 and 15. I have addressed so much about our relationship but he just wishes I hadn?t found out because I am a problem to him now. He was fine with things before I discovered his stash. But in truth, (and I told him prior to discovering the porn but this feel on deaf ears), I've found him very distant emotionally. I think I want to leave him but he doesn?t make it easy because he just keeps saying he is happy apart from my reaction to the porn. I feel confused. Wife England

2007-05-28 18:54:00
After three months of facebook poking and emailing lists of questions and answers back and forth, R and I finally managed to meet up in person with the four Sciences Po students heading to UW next year. Our rendez-vous was scheduled for Sunday afternoon, so at 15h I was waiting in rain boots and a trench coat in the pouring rain outside of mtro Odon. I?d been there for less than a minute when Thomas (one of the Seattle four) came strolling out up the mtro stairs with two unrelated French boys. One of them had apparently ?visited Seattle once,? but other than that, they had nothing to do with Washington and were just along for the caf. A few moments later Marie and Gabrielle (two and three of the SciPo in Seattle group) arrived simultaneously from opposite directions and the six of us decided to move on to les tages, a student-friendly caf on rue de Buci, to shelter from the rain and wait for the rest of our party. It's been raining a lot here lately:We sat outside on the cov...

Passenger cleared of cab driver's death after dispute turned violent
2007-05-27 08:53:00
ROBYN YOUNG The wife of late Satellite taxi driver John Harvey Hibbs was the first to walk out of the courtroom yesterday after Leroy Downey was found not guilty of manslaughter in Nova Scotia Supreme Court. "I do not conclude Mr. Downey intended to cause any serious bodily harm," Justice Simon MacDonald told a crowded courtroom. He said Downey was not guilty and Hibbs had caused the matter to escalate from a yelling match to a physical altercation when he forcefully removed Downey from his cab on Oct. 4, 2004. During the trial at the beginning of May, three eyewitnesses described what they saw on the night of Hibbs's death. All three agreed that Downey started the argument when Hibbs did not pull his cab up to the correct entrance of his Walker Avenue apartment building in Lower Sackville. Downey and a woman got into the cab and the arguing continued. Using profanity, Hibbs asked Downey to get out of the cab, eventually removing him and throwing him ont...

Well, I guess we know who's going back to rehab. On top of losing control and crashing her car, cocaine was found in Lindsay Lohan's automobile. It wasn't found "on her person," but it was found in her car. Police tell TMZ that 20-year-old Lohan and two other adults were in her 2005 Mercedes SL-65 convertible when she lost control and crashed into a curb and trees in Beverly Hills, Calif. around 5:30 AM. After the crash, police say LiLo got into another car and was driven to Century City Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries that involved "something to her upper chest area." The two other people in her car were not hurt they said. Officers received a 911 call about the accident and "tracked Ms. Lohan to the local hospital, where she was ultimately placed under arrest" for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Lt. McCann said it appeared as if Lohan was speeding and lost control. How is Dina Lohan going to spin this one? (F...
