Just as well I wrote that final sentence on my previous post. Today, a group of Brazilian air traffic controllers have made public a manifest - by necessity, anonymous, as their military status doesn’t allow them to participate in industrial disputes - announcing a hunger strike and demanding immediate action from the goverment to put ...

Funny air traffic controllers quotes

Seeing as I have nothing else to post and I would like to try and add a post daily, I thought I would blog this from Digg as it is rather funny. These are just some funny air traffic controller quotes that apparently all happened. Tower: “Delta 351, you have traffic at 10 o’clock, 6 miles!” Delta 351: “Give us another hint! We have digital watches!” Allegedly, a Pan Am 727 flight waiting for start clearance in Munich overheard the following: Lufthansa (in German): “Ground, what is our start clearance time?” Ground (in English): “If you want an answer you must speak in English.” Lufthansa (in English): “I am a German, flying a German airplane, in Germany. Why must I speak English?” Unknown voice from another plane (in a beautiful British accent): “Because you lost the bloody war.” read more | digg story

Computer system 'can land aircraft without air traffic controllers' by year
2003-08-26 07:36:00
Elizabeth Day of telegraph.co.uk said that British Aerospace scientists have developed a revolutionary airborne computer system that they claim can land aircraft safely without human air traffic controllers. It will enable a pilot to determine an aircraft's landing path simply by pressing a button in the cockpit. The aim is to eliminate human error, save on fuel and increase flight safety. Wonder if they have done enough to ensure a failure proof system in the first place. Illustration from Electronic Telegraph Some facts from Computer system 'can land aircraft without air traffic controllers' - The company plans to introduce the system, which has so far cost £76 million, half of which has been funded by the European Commission, in three phases. - BAE plans a full-scale trial introduction for leading airlines by 2008. - By 2020, they envisage that air traffic controllers will have been entirely replaced by the system, which will take all the decisions currently made by hu...
