Face Recognition - The New Face Of Security On Airports
2008-04-26 18:09:00
The airports in the UK are expected to get a new face of security i.e. Face Recognition Technology. The Guardian reports that a pilot project is all set to be initiated on some of the UK airports. The new face recognition technology will simply match the dimensions of people's faces with the details recorded on the electronic chips in their biometric passports, on the unmanned gates on airports. This will help to ensure better security and also decongest the queues on the airports. The only negative thing could be the rejection of some innocent passengers due to changes in their details on their biometric passports. However, there are some options to avoid inconvenience for passengers. One way could be to redirect such people to manual checking queues or to deploy some officials who could override the face recognition technology and let the passengers in after checking all the details.

USER FRIENDLY AIRPORTS
2008-03-27 12:24:00
In a major relief to domestic passengers, the civil aviation ministry has told developers of the new international airports at Hyderabad and Bangalore to restrict user development fee (UDF) to Rs 200 instead of the initially-proposed amounts that were three times higher. However, the ministry is open to the idea of higher airport charges for international passengers. UDF is in addition to passenger service fee (PSF) of Rs 225 levied at airports across the country. The ministry’s intervention means the GMR Malaysian Airports teams, developer of the Hyderabad airport, and Siemens-Zurich airport consortium, developer of the Bangalore airport, have to restrict UDF to Rs 200 in the case of domestic passengers till the proposed Airport Economic Regu1atory Authority of India (AERA) is set up for regulating airport charges. In the first four months of operation, the new airports are free to levy airport charges of their choice. However, they have to seek government ...

CAI targets global portfolio of 10 airports-Singapore By VEN SREENIVASAN CHANGI Airports International (CAI) expects to have a global portfolio of about 10 airports and investments of US$1 billion in airport equity in about five years. Chow Kok Fong, the international airport boss of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), said yesterday: ‘That will be a good size and it will allow us to grow to a level where we can achieve economies of scale as a global airport player.’ Indeed, CAI appears to be already getting that recognition. Yesterday, the company was named the 2008 Asia-Pacific Airport Investment Company of the Year at the Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Aerospace & Defence Awards ceremony. And CAI’s parent CAAS was itself named Airport of the Year at yesterday’s ceremony for ‘demonstrating world-class efforts in meeting the demands of all its end-users’. U.S. airports unsafe!
2008-02-20 07:57:00
This is just ridiculous. As CNN reports, the U.S. National Transport Safety Board (of the which the FAA, the Federal Aviation Administration, falls under) has found insane numbers of near mishaps in major U.S. airports. Here's just one instance in Florida:If you may recall, the FAA recently downgraded our country's air safety rating which grossly affected our local airlines' expansion plans as they are no longer allowed to increase flights into the U.S.Then what the hell is this news? Shouldn't the FAA be looking at their own airports before telling us that Philippine airports are unsafe?Correct me if I'm wrong but I can't remember an instance in any of our airports that airplanes collided because of inept traffic controllers.Just goes to show America is a bully and that downgrade was nothing more than a scheme to block our local airlines from eating a larger chunk of the lucrative trans-Pacific flight market.
World's Most Dangerous Airports
2008-02-16 14:02:00
Princess Juliana International Airport (Saint Martin) Princess Juliana International Airport serves Saint Maarten, the Dutch part of the island of Saint Martin. It is the second busiest airport in the Eastern Caribbean. The airport is famous for its short landing strip ? only 2,180 metres/7,152 ft, which is barely enough for heavy jets. Because of this, the planes approach the island flying extremely low, right over Maho Beach. Countless photos of large jets flying at 10--20 m/30-60 ft over relaxing tourists at the beach have been dismissed as fakes many times, but are nevertheless real. For this reason as well it has become a favourite for planespotters. Despite the difficulties in approach, there has been no records of major aviation incidents at the airport. Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport (Saba) Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is the only airport on the Caribbean island of Saba, in the Netherlands Antilles. It is well known among experienced fliers for the way in which air...

India to get 400 to 500 new airports: minister
2008-02-12 17:59:00
india plans to develop 400 to 500 airports in the next 10-12 years and a new infrastructure policy will be announced soon to encourage development of new airports, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said here Tuesday.
Future Airports in India...
2008-02-08 08:11:00
Presently India have 460 airports n airstrips. The Govt. now plans to have nearly 500 airports n airstrips in India by 2020. This will include the ongoing redevelopment of currently unused airports or little used airports and development of greenfield and cargo airports. There are another 368 landing strips that function as makeshift airports for limited purposes. As many as 156 belong to the defence or semi-defence sectors and various state governments while 63 are owned by the private sector. The peculiar situation in India is that air traffic is concentrated at a few key airports. They include 16 offering international services and another eight that connect domestic sectors. These 24 airports together account for a whopping 94 per cent of traffic and the balance is spread over 36 smaller or regional airports. A very liberal aviation policy is requires to reach the target of 500 full-fledged airports in the country, which has to be backed by an aggressive programme to upgrade exi...
Four Small Airports
2008-02-01 19:07:00
Today, Cranky Flier was talking about British Airways' recent announcement that they'll be flying narrow body jets across the Atlantic, from the New York area to downtown London, out of the not often used London City airport. The more I read about that, the more I thought about the smaller airports that I've used over the last few years.Smaller airports generally mean shorter wait times to check in, go through security and a pleasant environment. Unfortunately, it also means there is a lot less to do in the case of a long wait time. I've gone through my share of them. Some still offer regular jet service, some don't.1. Lubeck, Germany - currently serviced by RyanairLubeck is a northern German focus city for the low cost Irish airline, Ryanair, offering service to five different destinations. The old small terminal building has a restaurant and bar, and little else. But at least there's beer! The actual behind security area resembles a steel pole barn. Because that is basically...
Brit MP calls for tea trolleys at airports for weary travellers!
2008-01-29 12:01:00
A Tory MP has called for the introduction of traditional tea trolleys at airports in order to make weary travellers feel comfortable.   The idea, suggested to Michael Fabricant, MP for Lichfield, by Mark Price, the managing director of Waitrose, emerged amid the frustration and delays of airport immigration.   “I have travelled quite widely and I don’t think that any country offers this. It would be a world first,” Times Online quoted Fabricant, as telling the Times.   He is sure that travellers would appreciate the service.   “It wouldn’t do the Government any harm to compensate people for the long waits they’re now experiencing at passport controls,” he added.   Price said: “I do a lot of foreign travel and I have been progressively disappointed with how poor it feels when you return home. The whole experience is pretty bleak.”   “I thought wouldn’t it be nice if, when you arrived in t...

Bangalore and Hyderabad airports beset with problems
2008-01-28 09:41:00
While there is a raging debate on the pace of upgradation of existing airports, the greenfield projects are too under scrutiny. Bangalore International Airport, which is India’s largest greenfield airport, is gearing up to launch operations on March 30, 2008. The mock passenger trials are underway. Once operational, the airport is estimated to handle close to 11 million passengers every year. The Hyderabad Airport, which will be operational on March 16, is commissioned to handle 12 million passengers. Both these airports will be starting a new chapter in the history of aviation industry in India. Both these projects are, however, plagued with their own set of problems. For instance, the accessibility to the Banglaore airport is a big concern. The international airport is about 35 km from the CBD and at present is linked only with NH 7. The state government is working on a peripheral ring road, a high speed rail link and an express highway to improve the connectivity to the much-aw...

Ground reality:Delhi and Mumbai airports up on upgradation

It’s been around two years since GMR and GVK were handed over Delhi and Mumbai airports for their upgradation. Check in to check out why there’s not much improvement in infrastructural facilities such as adequate parking, lounge services and check-in counters. Ladies & gentlemen, please put your ear to the ground. There’s a rough patch around us. Please mind your steps as you move around — there may be a pothole. Look up for torn down ceiling, they may fall down on your head. Check-in and immigration counters have long queues, please be patient. Urinals are stinking, trolleys are few and far between and the car park is overflowing. And beware of touts and rogue taxiwallahs lurching in the background.... The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted. Thank you for choosing Indian airports. Folks that’s the flight of fancy for you today — plain, simple and clear. Why? Well, it’s as easy, or difficult, as figuring out the mystery of Mona Lisa’s smile. Like Vinci’s ...

...because at the airport, it makes you see that LOVE ACTUALLY ... IS ALL AROUND:And so Nanay and Tatay are now in the plane on their way back to the Philippines. The flight from Maui to Honolulu was supposed to be at 7:05 AM; They were both awake at 3:00 AM, I woke up at 3:30 AM; we were on our way to the airport at 4:30 AM. Too early, isn't it? But my dad was ready to go. He was all ready and we'd be waking up the household at 4:30 if we didn't leave. When we arrived at the Maui airport, we checked in and was bumped up to 6:00 AM flight (because we were there at 5:00 AM.Just before we entered the gate area, I asked my mom for their passport.
