The eGoM has settled down with final base price of Rs. 3,500 crore for the 3G spectrum. The auction is expected to be done with by November. Now, barely a week has elapsed since then that Bharti Airtel has announced plans of launching 3G-enabled services by October 2010. “If everything goes well on time with regard to spectrum auction, by February or March we will have spectrum allocation. Airtel Slashes Broadband Tariff By 40 per cent, Also Offers Freebies
2009-07-28 13:17:00
Bharti Airtel seems to have taken cues from its results and has thus decided to focus more on its telemedia customers. WATBlog earlier predicted the future focus area - the telemedia services like broadband and DTH would see renewed focus and could do wonder for the telecom giant. Mr K. Srinivas, Joint President, Telemedia Services, Bharti Airtel, told Business Line, “Our internal survey has revealed that subscribers are using more and more bandwidth. From just an average usage of 4Gb a month, broadband users are now using up to 8 Gb. Clearly this kind of usage needs higher speed. The reduction in tariffs is to present ‘true and rich’ broadband experience by making high speed broadband more affordable and offering VAS content on broadband that enriches the customer’s experience.” Bharti Airtel currently has a million broadband users and its Telemedia division logged revenues of Rs.856 crores in June quarter. The ARPU was in excess of  Rs.1000 per subscriber. De...

Airtel To Sell Unlocked Apple Iphone?
2009-06-17 12:15:00
In a recent post we commented on the the failure of Apple Iphones in India and enumerated couple of things which Apple can take care if it wants to target Indian market. It seems that Apple is listening to Indian users and have started thinking about them. Apple has allowed Airtel ( One of the two distributor’s of Iphone in India ,other is Vodafone) to unlock the Iphone and sell it to users who are not even subscribers of Airtel. User may have to pay an unlocking fees to Airtel but that’s not confirmed yet. This will be in contrast of earlier practice of selling Iphones in India only to Airtel or Vodafone subscribers. Earlier the Iphone was locked only for these operators, that is if user changes the provider the Iphone will no longer be usable, but after this new announcement any user can walk into an Airtel retail shop, purchase the Iphone and still continue with his existing service provider. This will help users who do not want to change their existing service provi...

Airtel Crosses 100 Million Subscribers - What Does That Say About the Mobil
2009-05-16 06:50:00
Airtel has become the first in India and the third worldwide behind China’s top players to cross 100 million subscribers. It has also become the sixth largest integrated operator in the world. And with around 300 million mobile subscribers in India, it also means Airtel now has a third of the market with it. In other words, if you sit with 3 random strangers in a bus stop in India, in all likelyhood one of them has an Airtel subscription (not applicable to bus stops in front of Vodafone stores). “This is a great achievement for the company. A couple of years back, crossing even the 25 million subscriber base was a dream. At that time few companies like Telefonica, Orange, Deutsche Telecome had that many subscriber base,” says Sunil Mittal at the press meeting. And why not, Bharti has not only been a mobile success story but also an Indian entrepreneurial success story. And now with India well consolidated, it is looking at going Global. The interesting point thoug...

AIRTEL PULLS OUT OF TAKEOVER TALKS WITH MTN, RELIANCE BEGINS THE CHASE
2008-05-28 08:07:00
3 cheers to the Bharti guys for holding onto their vision! Bharti Airtel, India's largest private telecom company pulled out of take-over talks with MTN after South Africa's MTN proposed to change the controlling relationship. Earlier Airtel wanted to buy a 51% stake in MTN but later MTN proposed a new structure where the Aritel would become a unit of MTN. This went against Bharti's vision:"of transforming itself from a home-grown Indian company to a true Indian multinational telecom giant, symbolising the pride of India, would have been severely compromised this was completely unacceptable to Bharti"Airtel-MTN combined would have been the 6th largest telecom group in the world. However, Airtel's competitor Reliance Communications is now in merger talks with MTN.Here is the official statement from Bharti Airtel:

iPhone India: Airtel + Singtel + Vodafone, Who is The 'Official' Carrier?
2008-05-12 18:20:00
