Interesting airway sequel
2008-04-08 02:01:00
Thank you, dear readers, for your responses to the previous post. Most of you guessed that the patient would end up being reintubated. One of you mentioned having seen this unusual technique used before as a temporary measure, which makes sense to me, but using this technique over several hours is a recipe for certain ...
An interesting airway situation:
2008-04-06 02:23:00
Today at work there was an interesting airway situation. We had a patient who had had a lengthy and complex course on the ventilator. The time had come to attempt an extubation. However, because of the patient’s borderline respiratory status the attending physician was concerned that reintubation would occur. Reintubation would not normally be a terrible ...

Inkel?s portable AirwayHD tuner compresses files on its own
2007-08-18 00:10:00
Filed under: HDTV, Portable Video Granted, portable OTA tuners are a dime a dozen these days, but an interesting twist has been introduced by Korea's Inkel. The AirwayHD manages to boast a diminutive size while internalizing the process of converting OTA streams into manageable files using the H.264 codec. Reportedly, the device can compress files to one-fourth of their original size without any PC software intervention, and it should make life pretty easy for those hoping to view recorded content on their portable media player. No word on a release date just yet, but it'll only run you about ?100,000 ($106) when it eventually lands. Check out a few more pics after the break.Continue reading Inkel's portable AirwayHD tuner compresses files on its own Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Air India and Jet Airways turn heat on Delta
2007-08-14 06:52:00
Intense competition by Indian carriers Air-India and Jet Airways in the Mumbai-New York sector has forced established US carrier Delta Air Lines woo business-class passengers by offering complimentary helicopter rides. Air-India started its daily non-stop service to New York (JFK) on August 1, and private carrier Jet Airways began its daily Mumbai-New York (Newark) service with a stopover at Brussels from August 5. They are aggressively wooing passengers by offering introductory fares as well as brand new airplanes saddled with added comforts and the latest in-flight amenities. Expecting a drop in passenger numbers, Delta has launched its complimentary helicopter service for BusinessElite customers. This is the same class as Air India's Business Class and Jet's Premier Class. This service is available between heliports in downtown Manhattan or at 34th Street and John F Kennedy International Airport on a non-stop ticket between New York and Mumbai. Passengers flying from Mumbai wil...

Volvo Amazon Coune Cabriolet 1962"> Click on the picture to enlarge ?A holiday with a purpose,? is how Keith and Mary-Anne Callinan view the Kenya Airways Safari Classic rally. However it?s clear from their past record that this husband-and-wife team are not just going for the sun and a look at the wildlife. They are going to be a force to be reckoned with. Keith started rallying in 1979 at the Australian club event level in a Mazda RX3, moving in 1982 onto State events. In 1994, he won the Queensland Rally Championship in category P5. In 1998 he competed in the four week Around Australia Rally in the Brock-prepared Holden Commodore that Peter Brock drove in the 1995 event. Keith was in the top five for the first half of the event until a front strut snapped and he had to retire. In 2000 he shared a drive in the London Sydney in a 1968 Alfa Romeo and could not believe how much he enjoyed marathon rallying. So much so that he managed to convince his wife, Mary-Anne to co-drive f...

Led Zeppelin. Stairway to Heaven.
2007-08-09 17:45:00
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold And she's buying a stairway to heaven. When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for. Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven. There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings, Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it makes me wonder.

Qatar Airways: Five Star?
2007-08-05 09:00:00
Qatar Airways, the "five star airline" has won three new skytrax awards: best airline in the Middle East, best Cabin Crew and best first class in the world.I have to admit I am getting tired of Qatar Airways five star claims. I was especially annoyed during a recent flight with them. While flying we had to watch their advertisement, which included their interactive entertainment system. We didn't have any choice over to whether to watch it or not, because this was one of the flights where they didn't have an interactive entertainment system.Normally I wouldn't complain - I am lucky to be able to travel by plane. But it's not five star.Worse, however, was the fact there was no soap in the toilets. I particularly felt this because my one year old had diarrhoea. This wasn't due to the baby meal, because they had forgotten it. The time before they had forgotten the child meal.Although they remembered the child meal, the container was so hot we burnt our fingers on it. There was a b...

Boeing, Jet Airways announce order for three 777-300ER's
2007-08-02 07:33:00
Boeing and Jet Airways announced that the airline has exercised options for three 777-300ER (Extended Range) airplanes. The order, valued at more than $790 million at list prices, follows a previous order for 10 777-300ERs in September 2005, for a combined total of 13 777-300ERs. The order was recently included on the Boeing Commercial Airplanes Orders and Deliveries Web site, attributed to an unidentified customer. "It is vital that Jet Airways continues to expand its fleet progressively to ensure its leadership position in India's dynamic aviation market," said Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal. "The 777's operating efficiencies and passenger comfort play a pivotal role in our long-haul growth strategy, and will play a pivotal role as we expand our international operations." Jet Airways took delivery of its first 777-300ER in April. In December 2006, the airline also placed an order for 10 787 Dreamliners.
Jet Airways comes to US as a Premier-Class Contender: New York Times
2007-08-02 06:37:00
With Jet Airways introducing its first service in the United States Sunday, the New York Times has featured it in a special report saying the Indian airline makes its case as a "premier-class contender". "Better than Singapore, better than Cathay and at least as good as Emirates." "That was how Naresh Goyal stated his goal that the Indian carrier Jet Airways be rated among the top premier-class service in the world in a few years," said Joe Sharkey in his "On The Road" column Tuesday. "Goyal does present an interesting case," he said noting "most Americans have never heard of Jet Airways, the airline he founded in India 14 years ago as a domestic carrier and began building into an international player. That will change." Jet Airways will operate a daily flight between Newark (New Jersey) and Mumbai with a stopover at the airline's new hub in Brussels with one of 10 new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft it ordered as part of a $3.7 billion international fleet expansion. The expansion will a...

Qatar princesses kicked off British Airways flight
2007-07-30 21:11:00
Hello to all visitors! I'm currently tied up with some important work and won't be able to resume blogging fully until next week, but, here's an interesting story about a trio of princesses from Qatar who were ejected from a British Airways line after they refused to sit next to some male passengers. The other passengers seem quite pleased, and with good reason: all that hubbub held up the flight for almost three hours.

Jet Airways aircrafts damaged due to bad weather
2007-07-30 06:02:00
Turbulent weather in a 30-mile radius around Mumbai spelt some bad luck for two Jet Airways flights on Friday evening, with one reporting a lightning strike and another a windowpane crack in the cockpit. An incoming flight from Chennai (9W-470) requested priority landing at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, when window No 2 on the left side of the cockpit (near the commander's seat) started cracking? ?arcing? in aviation parlance. "The crack appeared while the aircraft was descending from 41,000 feet to 32,000 feet," said a Jet Airways official. "It generally happens due to sudden change in temperature or because of an electrical issue," the official added. The Boeing 737 aircraft, which had 106 passengers onboard in addition to eight crew members, landed safely at 9.40 pm instead of its original landing time of 8.55 pm. The second instance, a lightning strike was reported on Jet Airways flight 9W-383 from Mumbai to Indore, which departed 50 minutes behind schedule at...
Arab princesses kicked off British Airways plane to jeers and whistles

Three Arab princesses were thrown off a packed British Airways flight after refusing to sit next to male passengers they didn’t know. Furious passengers whistled ...
Qatar Sheik holds up British Airways plane
2007-07-28 13:59:00
According to this MSNBC article, an Al Thani Sheik (the Al Thani family are the royal family in Qatar) held up a British Airways plane for several hours when he realised several female members of his family were seated next to men. When other business class passengers in the plane refused to change places, he stormed into the pilot's cabin to complain.Eventually, he, his family and his servants had to leave the plane. However, by this time three hours had passed and fifty furious passengers missed their connecting flights in London. This story must sound strange to someone who has never lived in Qatar. However, many Qataris believe very strongly that women should not be exposed to strange men. This belief is so strong that many women cover their faces with black veils.A common misconception is that is covering their face is part of their religion. In fact, when women undertake the pilgrimage to Mecca they are obliged to uncover both their hands and their face.Families are also very c...

The plane later landed safely at Jammu airport.

Jet Airways rules out fare war on US flights
2007-07-23 12:21:00
Private Indian carrier Jet Airways, which begins its US operations next month, has ruled out entering into a price war with other airlines and expects to attract passengers by offering top-class services. "We are not here to get into fare wars. We are here to give you the best product, which hopefully no other airline gives you," chairman Jet Airways Naresh Goyal said. Goyal said American passenger-airlines "dump people" from one point to another. But "With us, you get a hot meal within a half-hour of takeoff. It's a three-course meal in every section of the airplane - even in coach," he said. Asked how would be airline offer best quality service without raising fares, he said the carrier would increase productivity. "It's (productivity) higher and better than other carriers. Our cost ratio in aircraft is one of the lowest in the world," he said. Jet makes its maiden US flight to Newark airport from Mumbai next month. This will be followed by Toronto on September 5 as part of effo...

Brussels airport pins hopes on Jet Airways
2007-07-20 14:36:00
With the imminent arrival of aircraft from Jet Airways, India's largest private airline, from Mumbai on August 5, low-key Brussels airport is hoping that the Indian carrier's daily Mumbai-Brussels-Newark service will bolster not only passenger but also cargo traffic with both India and the United States. Brussels airport benefits from the huge presence of the Indian business community in and around Antwerp, the majority of whom are engaged in the diamond trade. Antwerp is an important diamond hub where billions of dollars in precious stones change hands in trade with India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. A large chunk of this diamond business passes through Brussels airport. Brussels airport, which likes to portray itself as a "hub in the heart of Europe", is keen to come out of the shadow of its next door "big brother", Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, which has long dominated the Benelux region and has come close to challenging Frankfurt airport, Europe's leading car...

Click on the picture to enlarge The Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally will run a competitive stage longer than anything seen in modern rallying. The Event Director, Surinder Thatthi, said after a rigorous route survey that they had found ?a spectacular 154.7 km stage awaiting to rewrite history books when the event revs-off in the coastal city of Mombasa in November.? This particular section runs south of Lake Manyara ? famous for its tree-climbing lions ? from the Loibosot Escarpment and then back to Arusha, passing near the entrance to the famous Ngorogoro Crater. ?The stage is a mix of virtually everything. It is twisty in some places and then becomes a high-speed affair before becoming rougher and finally climbing up into hills. It starts from Usa River in the shadow of Mount Meru near Arusha and goes down south, taking crews through a deep river-crossing where thrills and spills are practically guaranteed. Further on, crews tackle an open area with good roads b...

Flat tyre delays Jet Airways flight by 6 hours
2007-07-14 11:56:00
A Port Blair-bound Jet Airways flight 9W 629 was forced to return to Kolkata after airport authorities there refused permission to land with a deflated tyre. The tyre had burst during takeoff from Kolkata. The air traffic control at Kolkata alerted their counterparts in Port Blair after rubber debris were found on the runway by Airports Authority of India staff. The plane hovered over Port Blair for more than an hour, before returning to NSCBI Airport for an emergency landing at 11 am. The 164 passengers on board were back in Kolkata after nearly six hours in air. "The captain noticed a problem in tyre pressure when he activated the landing gear on reaching Port Blair on Friday morning. On informing the Port Blair ATC, he was asked to turn back as the short runway could have posed a threat to the plane?s safety in case it skidded on landing," an airport source said. The captain contacted the airline authorities in Kolkata and appraised them of the situation. After debating the situat...

DGCA orders enquiry into Jet Airways landing mishap
2007-07-13 13:36:00
The Director General of Civil Aviation has ordered an inquiry into the skidding of a Jet Airways flight from Delhi at the Indore Airport runway. 49 passengers were on board that July 1st flight when the accident occurred. A Jet Airways airhostess suffered injuries to her spine and 6 other passengers received minor injuries in the accident. The aircraft had skidded off the runway of Indore's Holkar airport, after its wheels broke while landing during heavy rains in the city. ?We are taking the incident seriously as we don?t want to make any compromise on safety measures,? said officials of the Quality Control and Air Safety departments of Air India, along with the DGCA who are to conduct a detailed probe. Preliminary investigations showed that the aircraft?s wheels and the anti-skid system were fully functional, as it was relatively new with only two years of operation.
