Al Qaeda

The Saudhouse
2008-07-09 07:55:00
Updated July 12:Are the Saudis behind Muslim terror most everywhere, or does it just seem like it?After all, 80% of Al Qaeda were Saudis several years ago. What's the figure now? We know that Zarqawi's Iraqi Al Qaeda was full of men from the Gulf, not necessarily Saudi Arabia, but Arabia nonetheless. Fallujah was full of these guys in 2004 during the two horrible US invasions of the town. And support for Al Qaeda is high in the Kingdom. A good 50% of the population supported bin Laden a few years back. The Al Qaeda unit inside Saudi Arabia, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, had vast support and was able to penetrate into the deepest recesses of the Saudi security forces during its operations. This is how it raided embassies. There were also times during the worst of the AQAP operations that the Saudi security forces just let AQAP escape from their very hands. This was due to huge support for AQAP inside the Saudi security forces themselves. What's happened since? With the death of...
al-Qaeda is on the ropes. Keeping them there is the issue.
2008-06-10 16:08:00
AJ Strata has been watching with some interest the demise of al-Qaeda.  Today, he remarks: It is alarming even to me how drastically al-Qaeda’s future as changed recently.  After 9-11 they were the future hope of Islam after they struck America a savage and deadly blow. But since then, mostly through the war front in Iraq and the atrocities committed there by al-Qaeda, killing tens of thousands of Muslims, al-Qaeda has become the enemy of Islam, now being chased from Iraq by a fighting force of Muslims numbering in the 100’s of thousands.   The fact is al-Qaeda is deadly, it just cannot topple any nations: This assessment is supported by a little-noticed reference in the UK’s new national security strategy, published in March: “While terrorism represents a threat to all our communities and an attack on our way of life, it does not at present amount to a strategic threat. But it is qualitatively and quantitatively more serious than terrorist threats we have faced in the p...

As que Al Qaeda est ?casi derrotada?, no? So Al Qaeda Is Defeated, Eh? Go Tell It to the Marines
2008-06-02 17:19:00
AlterNet So al-Qa'ida is "almost defeated", is it? Major gains against al-Qa'ida. Essentially defeated. "On balance, we are doing pretty well," the CIA's boss, Michael Hayden, tells The Washington Post. "Near strategic defeat of al-Qa'ida in Iraq. Near strategic defeat for al-Qa'ida in Saudi Arabia. Significant setbacks for al-Qa'ida globally -- and here I'm going to use the word 'ideologically' -- as a lot of the Islamic world pushes back on their form of Islam." Well, you could have fooled me. Six thousand dead in Afghanistan, tens of thousands dead in Iraq, a suicide bombing a day in Mesopotamia, the highest level of suicides ever in the US military -- the Arab press wisely ran this story head to head with Hayden's boasts -- and permanent US bases in Iraq after 31 December. And we've won? [..]Am I alone in finding this stuff infantile to the point of madness? As long as there is injustice in the Middle East, al-Qa'ida will win. As long as we have 22 times as many W...

CIA Says US Doing Pretty Well Against Al Qaeda
2008-05-30 23:47:00
I’m writing this in the morning for afternoon posting, so, I guess my pre-question will be “how many Democrats/Liberals will decry the CIA’s assessment by this afternoon?” (Washington Post) Less than a year after his agency warned of new threats from a resurgent al-Qaeda, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden now portrays the terrorist movement as essentially ...

CIA Planning For Al Qaeda 'Succession Crisis'
2008-05-28 13:30:00
CBS 2 - CIA Director Michael Hayden says there is "a big and continual push" to capture or kill al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, but his demise won't end the organization's menace. The CIA is just as interested in those jockeying to replace bin Laden in what Hayden predicted will be a "succession crisis."His comments came in an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press.A number of Egyptians are part of al Qaeda's top echelon and may struggle for power among themselves.Hayden says that despite al Qaeda's resilience, taking out bin Laden would be a psychological blow to the group behind the 9/11 attacks.

Pentagon says growth of Al-Qaeda safe havens 'troubling'
2008-05-25 14:42:00
CNews WASHINGTON: A Pentagon report said Friday that the growth of Al-Qaeda safe havens in Pakistan's tribal areas is "troubling" and warned it may take Pakistan several years to turn around the situation. The report to Congress by the US Department of Defense said Pakistan increased its troop levels in the border areas by 30,000 last year, and made "significant and costly" efforts to eliminate safe havens."It is troubling that despite these efforts, safe havens in the FATA have grown in recent years," the report said. The Pentagon report noted that 700 Pakistanis have been killed in suicide attacks since July 2007.It said "Al-Qaeda and other violent extremists continue to hide out in the FATA, where they are able to recruit, train, and target US and western interests, including plots against Europe and the US homeland."Madrassas, or Islamic religious schools, "continue to promote jihad and martyrdom, and provide potential operatives for acts of violence in Afghanistan," it said."De...

Al-Qaeda ready to take over regime in Yemen if collapses
2008-05-14 19:59:00
Yemen Online - A source close to Al-Qaeda said that Yemen’s al-Qaeda is closely monitoring the ongoing situations in Yemen and how this may lead to many repercussions including insecurity, monarchy and even collapsing of the current regime so that Mujaheeddin can take over. The source who talked over the phone said that there are plans and arrangements underway by Yemen’s al-Qaeda however; refused to give further details. The source indicated that the recent attacks that targeted U.S. and Italian embassies as well as other western interests in Sana’a were carried out by al-Qaeda. He denied that those attacks were a failure. “The attacks did not fail and they were messages meant to be sent to different parties and they were already delivered,” said the source.Via Counterterrorism
Al-Qaeda is Dwindling in Afghanistan and Iraq
2008-05-14 17:20:00
The most interesting discovery during a visit to Jalalabad, where Osama bin Laden planted his flag in 1996, is that Al-Qaeda seems to have all but disappeared. The group is on the run, too, in Iraq, and that raises some interesting questions about how to pursue this terrorist enemy in the future."Al-Qaeda is not a topic of conversation here," says Colonel Mark Johnstone, the deputy commander of Task Force Bayonet, which oversees four provinces surrounding Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan. Lieutenant Colonel Pete Benchoff agrees: "We're not seeing a lot of Al-Qaeda fighters. They've shifted here to facilitation and support." More...

Philip Shenon, THE COMMISSION: THE UNCENSORED HISTORY OF THE 9/11 INVESTIGA
2008-05-10 05:48:00
I think everyone remembers where they were when they first heard about the planes flying into the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon. For our generation, it?s that horrifying moment that matches up with when other generations remember the Kennedy assassination or the bombing of Pearl Harbor. But where were you when the horror of the Bush Administration?s handling of 9/11 began settling in? Its inability to scramble jets that fateful day or the President staying in an elementary school, reading to children about a goat rather than getting up and showing some leadership capabilities? Where were you when the Administration resisted a proper investigation of the attack on America? Philip Shenon, an accomplished and long-time reporter for The New York Times, has written a book that every American should read. The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation is, of all things, a beautifully-written journey into the not-so-bipartisan investigation into the governme...

UPDATE: Leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq NOT CAPTURED
2008-05-09 16:03:00
I posted yesterday that Abu Ayyub al-Masri had been nabbed and was off the street. Turns out, that story was not true: BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — Abu Ayyub al-Masri, the head of al Qaeda in Iraq, has not been captured, a senior U.S. military official told CNN on Friday. Iraqi authorities said Thursday that al-Masri had been captured in Mosul. U.S. military officials were surprised about the report of Abu Ayyub al-Masri’s capture — first reported by Iraqi media and picked up by The Associated Press. And intelligence officials said they were skeptical, even though Iraqi officials said al-Masri was already in U.S. military custody. Al-Masri (”the Egyptian”), also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajer, took the reins of the Iraqi al Qaeda offshoot in June 2006 after a U.S. missile strike killed his predecessor, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Since then, Iraqi officials have reported his death three times, his capture twice and a mortal wounding once. Too bad. I wonder how th...

Leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq Arrested in Mosul
2008-05-09 00:30:00
The leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, was arrested in the northern city of Mosul, the Iraqi Defense Ministry spokesman said Thursday. Spokesman Mohammed al-Askari said the arrest of al-Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, was confirmed to him by the Iraqi commander of the province. There was no immediate confirmation from U.S. forces on the arrest, although a source tells FOX News they are "extremely skeptical" that al-Masri has been captured. They said there maybe some confusion on the Iraqi end, because there are reports one of al-Masri's aides was picked up recently. The U.S. military in Baghdad said "information" href="http://www.foxnews.com/st-ory/0,2933,354622,00.html">we are currently checking with Iraqi authorities to confirm the accuracy of this information." This is big if confirmed.  This is the guy who took over Al-Qaeda in Iraq after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in an airstrike.  al-Zaraqawi is supposedly the guy who beheaded Nick Berg a...

Huge news out of Iraq: The leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, has been arrested, according to media reports quoting the country’s defence ministry. Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, was detained in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the reports said. The US military in Iraq said it was currently looking into the reports. The Egyptian-born militant took over the leadership of the group from Abu Musab al-Zarqawi shortly after he was killed in a US air strike in June 2006. Masri is believed to have helped Zarqawi form the first al-Qaeda cell in Baghdad following the US-led invasion in 2003. Pakistan's 'Gandhi' party takes on Taliban, Al Qaeda
2008-05-06 10:38:00
The ANP, for its part, wants to bring more accountability to negotiations by putting all the facts before the people. Past negotiations under the military-led government were never made public, says Sen. Zahid Khan of the ANP. So when agreements inevitably fell apart amid accusations and counteraccusations, no one knew who was right. "We'll make all the developments in the talks public so as the masses can judge who is backing out of his words," he says. "The party going against the agreement would have to take the ire of the masses." In this way, negotiations can serve a strategic purpose. Defense analyst Ikram Sehgal says there are many natural points of disagreement between Pashtun tribals and foreign terrorists, such as the tactic of suicide bombing. "Terrorist ideology is completely anathema to tribal ideology," he says. "The whole idea is to drive a wedge between the tribals and the terrorists." Yet Rashid and others say that to ultimately succeed, the government...
