Should YouTube censor al-Qaida?
2008-05-26 16:34:00 Slashdot It!Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., called Monday for YouTube to take down al-Qaida videos that users had posted, but the site said most of the videos his office had flagged did not contain material that violated their guidelines and rejected his request that they act to remove all material from U.S. designated terror groups. In a letter to Eric Schmidt, the chairman and chief executive officer of Google Inc., which owns YouTube, Lieberman urged the popular video-sharing service to enforce its own "community guidelines" against "graphic or gratuitous violence" and said the company should change its rules "to address violent extremist material."In the letter, released to the media and dated Monday, Lieberman wrote that removing videos produced by al-Qaida and other extremist groups should be straightforward, because "so many of the Islamist terrorist organizations brand their material with logos or icons identifying their provenance."In a blog posting, YouTube said it welcomed...

Al-Qaida On The Run In Iraq– Or Is It?
2008-05-26 09:15:00 There is increasing evidence al-Qaida forces are leaving the city of Mosul and seeking refuge in desert areas further south. The United States military believes the group is “off balance and on the run” but has yet to be defeated. Military officials were less optimistic than US Ambassador Ryan Crocker who said on Saturday that Iraqi forces have made important progress in confronting extremists and added: “You are not going to hear me say that al-Qaida is defeated, but they’ve never been closer to defeat than they are now.” The United States and Iraq now consider Mosul the last major urban stronghold of al-Qaida and it appears to have been forced to leave it. Admiral Drisoll emphasized that al-Qaida is disorganized but the group remains “a vey lethal threat” to security. Iraqi armed forces are conducting searches of Mosul and Sadr city in Baghdad which has elicited growing uneasiness from 0members of the Mahdi army. Their original agreement w...

US strike on al-Qaida kills children
2008-05-23 02:12:00 BAGHDAD (AP) - A U.S. helicopter strike north of Baghdad killed eight people in a vehicle, including at least two children, Iraqi officials said Thursday, insisting all the dead were civilians. The U.S. military said six were al-Qaida militants but acknowledged children were killed. AP Television News footage showed the bodies of three children in blood-drenched clothes - the eldest appearing to be in his early teens - along with the bodies of five men, at the hospital in Beiji, where the dead were taken after Wednesday evening’s strike. Iraqi and U.S. officials each put the number of slain children at two. The reason for the discrepancies between the two accounts and the TV footage was not known. It was the latest incident threatening to alienate Sunni Arabs, who have played a key role in the steep decline in violence over the past year by joining forces with the Americans against al-Qaida in Iraq. Beiji, an oil hub 155 miles north of Baghdad, lies in a largely Sunni Arab are...

US Says al-Qaida in Iraq Using Children
2008-02-06 15:23:00 Videotapes seized during U.S. raids on suspected al-Qaida in Iraq hide-outs show the terror group training young boys to kidnap and assassinate civilians, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Wednesday. Footage aired for reporters showed an apparent training operation with black-masked boys - some of whom appeared to be about 10 years old - storming a house and holding guns to the heads of mock residents. Another tape showed a young boy wearing a suicide vest and posing with automatic weapons. But U.S. and Iraqi officials said they could offer no estimate on how many children have fallen under the terror group's control. They named just a handful of attacks blamed on women or children. The American military said some of the tapes were found in December during a U.S. raid in Khan Bani Saad, northeast of Baghdad, and said it indicated a pattern that al-Qaida in Iraq was increasingly using children for sinister means. "Al-Qaida in Iraq wants to poison the next generation of Iraqis," Rear...
