The Alabama Preacher
2008-06-22 13:38:00 The Alabama preacher said to his congregation, ?Someone in this congregation has spread a rumour that I belong to the Ku Klux Klan. This is a horrible lie and one which a Christian community cannot tolerate. I am embarrassed and do not intend to accept this. Now, I want the party who did this to stand and ...

Pick of the Day 6/7/08
2008-06-07 11:03:00 Both Bottletree and Workplay are closed tonight for private events. I hope whoever is in there payed dearly to take away my two favorite venues on a SATURDAY NIGHT! Seriously, who closes on Saturday night! Let me tell you who doesn't:The Spots @ SpeakeasyAdmission: 8$It Starts: 8PMI have to admit, I like vocals. I often get annoyed at "all instrumental" bands. This is a flaw of mine, I am aware of it, but it does me no good. Local band The Spots do not annoy me. Their constantly shifting, ever grooveful stylings have me sedated beyond caring.
Pick of the Day 6/6/08
2008-06-06 11:03:00 Finally! We have the weeks first honest rock show of the week:Matt Costa / Delta Spirit / The Weather Underground @ WorkplayAdmission: 18$Be There: 8PMMatt Costa is the best of the bunch here, with style that ranges all over the place. He's a good songwriter, so whatever genre he touches he moves. Don't rule out the other two, they both have great grooves and rockitude to offer.
Pick of the Day 6/5/08
2008-06-05 11:03:00 I was really worried that there was gonna be nothing to see tonight. That was until I looked up Bottletree's event calendar. Though none of the local event calendar's had it listed (I'm looking at you Black & White) there is in fact a show tonight, and it's a good one:Rollin' In The Hay / One Eye Mary @ BottletreeAdmission: $10Go Time: 8PMGood ol' fashioned bluegrass mixed with some south-land rolling rock. BTW all proceeds benefit Black Warrior Riverkeeper. Have fun and do good!Honorable Mention: Spells @ The High Note

2008-06-04 11:03:00 I'm back today with another pick for the best of the bar bands:The Big Tasties @ Bailey's PubAdmission: FreeGet Down: 10PMThe Big Tasties have been one of my long time favorites, and they FINALLY put up some music on their myspace page, so now you don't have to take my word for it. Pick of the Day 6/3/08
2008-06-03 11:03:00 So last week had two dead days in it, and it's only Tuesday and this week's already racked one up. What's the deal, Birmingham! Tuesday is a great night to go out. I'm not talking about the sloppy crapola that some of the local bars are drowning out your thoughts with. I'm talking good music here. Put it on stage, and we'll come and see it!

Pick of the Day 5/31/08
2008-05-31 11:03:00 For a Saturday, it's really a rather weak selection. Still, at least there's something to get excited about:Laura Reed & Deep Pocket @ ZydecoAdmission: 6$Get Down: 10PMHot damn it's good to hear a lady belt some soul! She's dropping funk on you too, and you know she can pull it off when she's played with George Clinton.
Pick of the Day 5/30/08
2008-05-30 11:03:00 Happy Friday everyone! C'mon now, you can do it.Matthew Mayfield / Stewart Vann of The Triceratops / The Monarchs @ BottletreeAdmission: 8$It Starts: 8PMMatthew and Stewart used to make music together, and now here they are together alone. Add to that The Monarchs, a grab bag of musicians from many local bands, and you've got the ingredients for a good time.Honorable Mention: Stoney Lonesome @ Metro Bistro Wess Floyd / The Victrolas @ Speakeasy
Pick of the Day 5/29/08
2008-05-29 11:03:00 Whew, thank the lizard there aren't many days like yesterday. Back to the tunes we go:Destroy Everything / Baak Gwai @ The NickAdmission: ?Get There: 10 PMIt's not often I hear a genuine punk band that pushes the limits of that genre into unexpected directions. Most of them are re-hashing a sound whose origins they have no memory of. Destroy Everything are harnessing punk for their own mad designs, and infusing it with multi-shout harmony and southern rock hues.Baak Gwai are a Tuscaloosa band that I've featured in the post a number of times. If you haven't seen them yet, now's as good a time as ever. It's never to late to open your ears!Honorable Mention: ZZ Top @ Verizon Music Center Lost Finale @ Bottletree
Afternoon Update - Shirley Bassey, Alabama, Jimmy McGriff, more
2008-05-28 01:26:00 Dame Shirley Bassey is recovering in a Monaco hospital after emergency surgery for "an emergency operation to relieve stomach complications, after complaining of abdominal pain."Bassey is expected to be better for the Nelson Mandella 90th Birthday celebration next month in Hyde Park London.Randy Owens, ex-lead singer for Alabama, has signed with Nashville's Broken Bow Records and will release his new album, One on One, on November 11. John Rich of Big and Rich produced. In addition, Alabama will be honored with a bronze statue in their hometown of Fort Payne. The unveiling will take place on June 7.Jazz and blues organist Jimmy McGriff passed away Saturday from multiple sclerosis at the age of 72.McGriff was multi-talented, playing bass, saxophone, drums, vibes and piano, but it was when he moved to organ (normally a Hammond B-3) in 1960 that he really made his name. He reached the R&B top ten in 1962 with an instrumental version of I've Got a Woman (peaked at number 20 on ...
Pick of the Day 5/27/08
2008-05-27 11:03:00 Tuesday night's a good time drink away the stress of the upcoming week, so who better to spend it with than:The Booze @ The NickAdmission: ?Get down: 10PMAlcohol may be a downer, but The Booze sure isn't. It's straight upbeat rock with traces of Van Morrison and invasion era melody. Throw that in a tumbler with some Strokes and you've got a potent concoction.Honorable Mention: The Sword / Torche / Stinking Lizaveta @ Bottletree
Pick of the Day 5/26/08
2008-05-26 11:03:00 Ok! So another large gap in postings has occured, despite my assurances otherwise. Fear not! I can guarantee this weeks posts will all be there, 'cause I wrote them already. This works out for everyone. I get more time during the week, you get more notice as to what's coming. I've added an upcoming shows section that will highlight the picks ahead so you can start planning your nights accordingly. Alrighty, onwards and upwards:Flowers Forever / Teen Getaway @ BottletreeAdmission: 9PMZero Hour: 8$If the world was a predictable place, then Flowers Forever would be a whiny hippy band with twelve acoustic guitarists all playing rhythm. Fortunately for us all, the world's a twisted bitch with a trick up her sleeve, and Flowers Forever is crunchy and foul mouthed, with it's muddy boots planted firmly on the ground.Teen Getaway label themselves as "Punk / Rock / Soul" on their myspace profile. Well...they certainly have a punk rock soul, but it's wrapped in an experimental indie fles...

Pick of the Day 5/21/08
2008-05-21 11:05:00 Tonight's pick comes with a word of caution: get there on time, cause this band is opening for a bunch of duds, and you don't want to get there just to leave in a hurry.Luego @ The NickAdmission: 5$Get Down (I mean it!): 10PMGood thing Luego is worth treading into shark infested waters for. I don't understand how this quirky little gem got on the bill with a bunch of butt-rock. I love the tone of the lead singers voice. It's earnest and unpolished - which is perfect.
Pick of the Day 5/20/08
2008-05-20 19:06:00 This show may not get your sweat broken, but it'll start your toes tappin', and on a Tuesday that may be all you need:Jim White / John P. Strohm @ BottletreeAdmission: 12$Go Time: 9PMI wouldn't call them mellow, but tonight's duo have a certain crusty folkitude to them that mediates their otherwise rambunctious souls. What?
Pick of the Day 5/19/08
2008-05-19 21:28:00 I'm busy as a bee these days, but here's a little info for ya, squeezed into my limited spare time.Ladyhawk / Neva Dinova / The Dirty Lungs @ The NickAdmission: 5$Go Time: 10PMThe real interest here is The Dirty Lungs, another band that proves Birmingham can rock in the old school authentic kind of way, and not just in the new-fangled, focus grouped to death style.

Notre Dame vs. Alabama on the Gridiron in Atlanta?
2008-05-14 21:40:00 Notre Dame vs. Alabama in Atlanta? Why not? I’m hearing that Alabama coach Nick Saban really wants to get Notre Dame on the Crimson Tide schedule in the future. He played the Irish as the head coach at Michigan State and found the exposure for his program very helpful. And beating the Irish never hurts in recruiting. Here is my proposal: If Alabama can’t talk Notre Dame into a home and home

Pick of the Day 5/14/08
2008-05-14 11:03:00 Another day without some heavy hitters is upon us. I guess Bottletree and Workplay are taking some much needed time off. Let's just hope they come back with a bang this weekend. In the meanwhile, here's something to sidetrack you:Mr. Gnome @ The NickAdmission: 5$Get It On: 10PMDISCLAIMER: The other two bands on the bill don't merit much attention, so don't worry if you show up a bit late. Mr. Gnome makes a heck of a lot of noise for a two person outfit, but they do it with style and volume. They're volutyle!
Pick of the Day 5/13/08
2008-05-13 11:03:00 Man, it's been a few days. I'm sorry to keep y'all in the dark, but I think I'm back now for good. I've been writing these posts in the morning, and that is no longer a viable option. I've sorted it out, and it works better for everybody. Starting from....now, the new days posts will be available first thing in the morning, rather then around noon some time. Alright, here we go again:Reed Pittman and the Rest @ The NickAdmission: 5$Get Down: 10 PMC'mon now! I get back from a break, and both Workplay and Bottletree have decided to take the night off. Thank the lizard that The Nick decided to step up and pull in an act that's a little atypical for them. Reed Pittman plays measured and melodic lullaby pop. It's a bit earnest, and occasionally hackneyed, but it makes up for it with moments that make the hair raise on your nape. That isn't to say that he doesn't rock it out once on the while, but it doesn't sound nearly as comfortable as when he's sobbing over dramatic chord...

Anyway, I'll try to get back on the regular horse soon enough, but for now here's a taste.Langhorne Slim / Amy Lavere @ BottletreeAdmission: 10$What Time: 9PThis show is gonna be a killer! Both these folks make the good the stuff. Fill up your soul now, cause the prices are rising. Get while the getting is good.
Pick of the Day 5/5/08
2008-05-05 17:42:00 Happy Cinco De Mayo!I guess people are drinking too much to host live music today, because all of the major venues took the day off. Fine by me, I get to introduce myself to a new joint:Felix / The Photonicas / Spells / Henry Dunkle @ The High NoteAdmission: 5$Go Time: 8PMAll of these boys are homegrown, except for Felix, and they get the thumbs up anyway. Pick of the Day 5/3/08
2008-05-03 17:45:00 This marks the very first time I have picked Speakeasy for this post, which really is a result of my own ignorance of it's existance. No longer!Arkadelphia / The National Trust @ Speakeasy Admission: ? Be There: ?Local boys Arkadelphia are playing tonight, and they?re one of the better bands from our neck of the woods. These guys know how to rock, and they know how to bring it with the acoustic folkitude. Playin lead and hitting the mic with vox is Lee Bains, who may recognize from some of his solo shows about town. The National Trust are a Tuscaloosa trio with a great songwriting sensibility and pretty kickin? rock chops. Come on down and check it out.

Pick of the Day 5/1/08
2008-05-01 21:57:00 Happy May!The Strife Rifle / The White Oaks / VASA / The Delicate Cutters @ WorkplayAdmission: 10$Go Time: 8:00 p.m.We certainly have been showered with a bounty of great concerts here in Birmingham lately. Today?s show isn?t as jam packed as last weeks Raindrop Festival, but the bands are some of the best locals to be found, and the charity (The Gopher Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer) is righteous. On top of all that, this is a pretty cheap ticket for Thursday night at Workplay, so it won?t break your wallet either.

2008-04-24 13:24:00 The Birmingham Business Journal published the following story that is finally great reporting on what is a pretty strong real estate market. Statewide home sales shot up nearly 11 percent in March, but still lagged nearly 27 percent over the same month last year. The Alabama Center for Real Estate reported that a total of 3,951 homes sold last month, compared to 3,563 in February and 5,405 in March of last year. The Edge will host with Aaron Neville performing. It seems that we report on a Yoko Ono lawsuit about once a month. This time, the shoe is on the other foot as Massachusetts based World Wide Video has filed a copyright infringement suit against Ono for nine-hours of footage showing ex-Beatle John Lennon talking about and using drugs along with writing the songs Remember and Mind Games. 2008-04-21 17:59:00 Another movie night is upon us, and what a weird cult classic they've selected for us:Road House @ BottletreeAdmission: FREEGo Time: 8PMTo quote Bottletree's excellent intro:"Road House is one of those films you spend about two hours watching and never really understand what is happening but you're too entertained to care. It is about Dalton (Swayze), the greatest bouncer, who has come to a small road house to instill order. He cleans up the bar's poor crop of bouncers and manages to fall in love with the town doctor. All the while, pissing off the local crime boss. Monster trucks, tons of breasts, kung fu, and a blind guitarist later, you still don't have to think to be amused. All in all, Road House is the perfect movie to do just about anything too because it has everything a good time requires."There you have it. Have at it.
