Freedom of speech & the search for the ultimate truth.
2007-07-06 07:28:00 Alan Johnston was kidnapped in Gaza whilst reporting for the BBC News organization and held captive for 114 days - he is now thankfully free. One of his first instincts when released was to highlight the plight of fellow journalists around the world. The BBC understandably covered this resolution to the story extensively and as a consequence much media interest in the UK is focusing on Alans welcome release. Alan Johnston has also been awarded an Amnesty Media Award for his reporting of the situation in Gaza for the BBC dueing 2o06/7.At this happy time, it is easy to forget the extent to which many other journalists suffer to bring us the truth. In May each year there is a World Press Freedom Day. The following is harvested from the UNESCO website highlighting the 2007 event. 'The Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Barometer proves that countries involved in violent conflict are dangerous places for media professionals ? with 37 journalists killed in Iraq since the beginning of...

Alan Johnston 100 days in captivity
2007-06-20 21:22:00 Colleagues of BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston stopped work today to mark 100 days since he was kidnapped in Gaza. Since his abduction there have been worldwide appeals for his release. However to date these appeals seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Ironically it was Alan Johnston's reports from Gaza and the Middle East helped which helped inform us all of the the struggle for justice by the Palestinians. Journalists like Alan Johnston carry out a great service in reporting from areas of conflict across the world and on this the 100th day of his abduction I think it is important we all remember Alan Johnston and hope that he will released soon.

Alan Johnston is alive
2007-06-01 21:13:00 The Army of Islam released on Friday a video showing the first pictures of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) journalist Alan Johnston since he was kidnapped in Gaza City in March and in which he says he is well."First of all, my captors have treated me very well. They fed me well, there has been no violence towards me at all, and I'm in good health," a slightly pale Johnston, wearing a red jumper and sitting against a black backdrop, said on the Internet video. Speaking slowly and clearly, the Briton, who marked his 45th birthday in captivity last month, spoke about the Palestinian suffering he had witnessed during his posting in the Gaza Strip. The newsman's family welcomed the first pictures of Johnston since he was kidnapped in March, but admitted they were difficult to watch. via metimes.com

Freedom for Alan Johnston: Freedom for Us All
2007-04-24 19:35:00 By Ramzy Baroud4/24/07In Trafalgar Square in London, dozens of journalists representing every major news organization descended on a designated corner in the tourist infested area in support of Alan Johnston, the BBC correspondent kidnapped in Gaza on March 12, 2006, one month after his ordeal began. Awaiting the arrival of Alan?s family to a press conference, organized by Reporters without Borders, I stood along with a few activists. My nervous smiles, interrupted by brief statements to inquiring journalists, could hardly hide my utter feelings of shame. It?s not often that I feel this way, taking part in a solidarity event in support of anyone. This time was different, however, despite all attempts to distance oneself from responsibility. ?Alan, they are not from amongst us,? read of the banners held by hundreds of journalists gathering in Ramallah, in the West Bank, to support Alan on the same day we gathered in London. The unfortunate fact is that while the kidnappers were not e... |
