Albert Hammond Jr. - ¿Cómo te Llama?
2008-08-09 17:48:00 With his charming 2006 debut Yours To Keep, Albert Hammond, Jr. demonstrated not only his flair for songwriting – a talent that’s perhaps unwittingly smothered by his role as Strokes guitarist – but also a keen ear for picking out a pleasant indie-pop melody. Surprisingly for some, that first solo album recoiled from his usual gritty, angular fare and delivered a record that was enjoyable, if not groundbreaking. Perhaps that’s why his second effort sees the Los Angeles-born musician give his songs a more experimental feel; Cómo Te Llama’s style deviates from indie rock orthodoxy in a way that its predecessor never quite managed to. The tried-and-tested “gentle indie-rock” formula is still present, and tracks like In My Room, G Up and GfC are all executed in a likeable fashion – yet Hammond’s at his most resourceful when he dabbles in methods that result in heavy, grimy basslines (the dark, brooding Rocket), swirling, hypnotic, pop-rock (see Victory At Mont...

Albert Hammond - The Free Electric Band (1973)
2007-09-07 08:00:00 Albert Hammond is one of the more successful pop/rock songwriters to come out of England during the 1960s and 1970s, and has also enjoyed a long career as a recording artist, his work popular in two languages on three continents across four decades. Hammond was born in London in 1944 -- his family actually came from the British colony on Gibraltar, but wartime considerations caused his mother to be evacuated to London, where she gave birth. He spent his childhood and youth on Gibraltar, where he became fluent in both English and Spanish -- that bilingual ability would serve him well in his later career. His family lived modestly on his father's fireman's pay, and one of his early diversions was music -- he sang in church and became head choir boy. He also became interested in popular music, sang for his own enjoyment, and also took up the guitar.Hammond reached his teens just as rock & roll was taking hold on British youth. By his own account, at the outset of his performing caree...

Careless Hearts, Commercials, and Albert Hammond Jr Prize Pack
2007-02-24 22:17:14 Last week Tom from Twangville threw up a post on The Careless Hearts, a SF-based foursome. They come from the same side of the tracks as The Old 97’s and Bottle Rockets. The first listen impressed me enough to make an iTunes purchase (a rarity for me). For fans of alt-country, I would check out the band and the blog. the Careless Hearts self-titled debut and the blog are excellent and well worth your time. Careless Hearts - Chattering Teeth Our friends over at Broken Dial have a contest to promote the new Albert Hammond Jr album. Head over there to win an autographed cd and t-shirt. I just realized that the contest ends today (sorry for the late notice). And Finally, Joe over at Each Note Secure put together a list of commercials that feature great songs. Ever since Nissan played SRV’s version of “Voodoo Child” to promote the Xterra (I’m pretty sure it was the Xterra), I’ve noticed that advertisers are really tapping into some good music.
