Some reports put the deal as high as $260 million which would be the largest contract in MLB history. Read More Details at ...
Cubs looking at Albert Pujols
2011-11-29 16:20:00
Albert Pujols has a 9 year/210M offer on the table from the St. Louis Cardinals and a “hey fans look at us” offer from the Miami Marlins.  Other than that he just hasn’t been getting a whole lot of attention.  Maybe it’s the Cardinals offer that’s scaring teams away.  As we read yesterday, one source... The World Series is won when one team wins the best of seven games. Right now, heading into World Series Game Four, the Texas Rangers, who return to the MLB Championship Series just one year after losing to the San Francisco Giants, find themselves behind a game to Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals. Albert Pujols Powers Cardinals to World Series Game 3 Win
2011-10-23 20:41:00
Albert Pujols did his best Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson imitations in hitting three massive home runs, as the St. Louis Cardinals powered their way to a demoralizing 16 to 7 rout of the Texas Rangers on Saturday. With that performance, Pujols becomes only the third player in major league baseball (MLB) history to hit (Read More...)

Please, let's all relax about Albert Pujols being a Cub. For now.
2011-02-17 17:56:00
My mother-in-law called me yesterday, all out of breath, because she heard that Albert Pujols was going to be a Cub.To be fair, she loves the Cubs, and she sees his presence as a good thing, as would I if it would come to that.  But I had to gently let her down, that all that happened yesterday was that the Cardinals did not meet Big Al's deadline, and that not only does that not mean he is going to be a Cub, in fact, he is still very much a Deadbird all year.  I didn't get into some of the finer points, which I am about to do with you all, now.  Mainly because I was on the telephone,...

Albert Pujols: God? Or Just Jesus?
2009-04-24 20:48:00
There are times in the life of a Cub fan when you just don't want to talk about certain things. For example: after the end of Game 7 in the 2003 NLCS, I really wasn't up for the debate about whether or not Alex Gonzalez could have turned two and ended the inning. After the 2008 NLDS, the construction of our lineup wasn't at the top of my list of things I really REALLY wanted to discuss. And when our bullpen has no lefty, our 3-6 hitters have a combined average of less than the price of a Happy Meal, and we're about to spend the weekend taking on the hottest team in baseball, I really don't want to talk about this: Is Pujols among the most perfect players...ever? Friday, April 24, 2009 Tony La Russa might have the toughest job in all of baseball: On a daily basis, it is his responsibility to come up with new and different ways to describe how good Albert Pujols is. But Pujols put on a ridiculous show against the Mets on Thursday, clubbing a home run to right field, lacing a sin...
Unanimous Hall of Fame Entrant?
2008-12-02 13:23:00
Unanimous Hall of Fame Entrant?   Not long ago Kman and I had a discussion about Greg Maddux’s career.  I argued that Maddux was a candidate to be the first ever player inducted to the Hall of Fame with a unanimous vote.  Surprisingly, this has never happened before - not even Cal Ripken received votes from 100% ...

2008-04-10 07:38:00
Albert Pujols got his first home runs of the year after a heated, pregame exchange with Houston’s Brandon Backe on Wednesday night. So does that mean that he plays his best when he’s riled up? Will Albert Pujols Injury Hurt Fantasy Players?
2008-03-19 11:20:00
A couple days I quipped that Albert Pujols will have a hard time driving in runs if SS Cesar Izturis were to hit in the #2 hole given the awfulness that is Cesar Izturis (258/302/315 in 2007 and 259/295/334 career). Beyond the snark, I wanted to see how various line-up spots around Pujols have produced compared with his RBI totals and whether last season's 103 RBIs can be reasonably expected to be unrepeatable. Here are the slashstat results for the lead-off hitter, #2 and the clean-up hitter along with Albert Pujols results since 2002. Link for Wednesday: Will Albert Pujols Need Elbow Surgery?, Felix Pie (Ball
2008-03-06 07:44:00
One of the remarkable things about Albert Pujols is the incredible numbers he puts up year after year, despite back and elbow injuries. The guy is just a beast. There were rumors that Pujols might undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. MLB.com ...
Odds & Ends: Albert Pujols, Brad Lidge and Brandon Wood
2008-02-24 02:12:00
Since Albert Pujols announced he won't play through injuries the same way he has in the past, fantasy players have begun to re-evaluate where he should be drafted.  I know I have no intentions of taking him with a mid-1st round selection. His ADP has fallen to 7th, but the last three mock drafts I have taken part in, he has gone 10th twice and 13th.  My guess is he will be too hard to pass up with the 12/13 picks in 12-team leagues without additional negative information. * So the Phillies trade for Brad Lidge to solidify their bullpen and, on the first pitch, he catches a cleat and hurts the knee he had surgically repaired this past off-season.   Tomorrow is the day Phillies' fans and fantasy players wait for. Will Lidge lose significant time?  Who will close then?  Tom Gordon and who? * Reports have Angels' prospect Brandon Wood moving back to SS in AAA this year.  If something happens to Erick Aybar, Macier Izturis or Chone Figgins, do not be surp...
Tigers? Miguel Cabrera in company with the likes of Albert Pujols, Vladimir

Odds & Ends: Albert Pujols, Giants OF and An ROY Sleeper
2008-02-16 20:03:00
Buster Olney of ESPN has a blurb in his daily blog.  He is hearing the concerns about Albert Pujols' health are very real.  I know I have already decided to not pick him in fantasy baseball drafts.  What I haven't decided at what point I would take Pujols? * On Grant Paulsen's "Minors & Majors" program on XM Radio, John  Manuel of Baseball America offered the Angels' Nick Adenhart as a dark horse ROY candidate.  Adenhart  has a lot to overcome with the Yankees' Joba Chamberlain and the Red Sox' duo of Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz set to dominate the headlines, but I know I'd rooting for Adenahrt to surprise. Mr. Manuel pegged Joba at the favorite.  Two 80 pitches on the 20-80 scouting scale is too much to overcome. Additionally, he pegged Red 1B Joey Votto's chances of starting on Opening Day at 5%.  He cited Hatteberg's experience and performance as too much for Votto to overcome.  I wasn't surprised.  What did su...
What In The World? Albert Pujols Injury Talks Grow
2008-02-14 23:04:00
Say it ain’t so… Let me first preface this blog post by saying that neither the St. Louis Cardinals nor Albert Pujols himself have verified these rumors. I’m doing my best right now to get a definite answer, but any fantasy GM who is going into a draft soon with an early to middle pick in ...
Albert Pujols Headed For Tommy John Surgery?
2008-02-14 15:50:00
With fantasy drafts getting underway, one of the top 1st round discussions is the placement of Cardinals' MVP candidate Albert Pujols.  Injuries have sapped the SB potential he showed in 2005 and have knocked him from the perch as the top player in fantasy baseball.  Now more rumors are swirling that could jeopardize his 2008. In reaction to being included on a since-discredited list of players who would appear in the Mitchell Report, Albert told the media he will no longer play through injuries as he has for the past few seasons.  This has spawned the latest rumor about needing Tommy John surgery. From MLBnewsonline.com:The hushed voice of KMOX sports reporter Kevin Wheeler has joined the whispers in St. Louis that Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols may be headed for a fall, not merely because Pujols has been playing with foot, leg and various other aches and pains in recent years but because far more serious trouble awaits him. "Albert is the perfect hitter," sa...

Albert Pujols still angry over being linked to Mitchell Report on steroids
2008-01-22 01:47:00
Albert Pujols, angry his name was incorrectly linked to the Mitchell Report on steroids last month, banned a St. Louis television station from participating in a news conference Monday. Complete Mitchell Report List: Roger Clemens & Not Albert Pujols and A Whol
2007-12-13 16:27:00
Another sure-fire Hall-of-Fame candidate has been implicated by the Mitchell Report.  Roger Clemens is in it, and ESPN News reported he received his 'roids from the Yankees trainer. This is not going to be a good day for many players.  Maybe that is why they have a 6PM press conference scheduled. Any guesses who will be on it?  Any players who will disappoint you if they are? Albert Pujols playing after Tony La Russa realizes mistake, rewrites lineup
2007-08-11 02:26:00
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa rewrote his lineup card to include Albert Pujols several hours before Friday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, forgetting that he had planned to give his star a day off later in the weekend. The original lineup had Chris Duncan batting third and playing first base. Read the full story. ...
Cardinals Tony La Russa Motivates Albert Pujols
2007-08-03 03:25:00
The public will never know unless Cardinals manager Tony La Russa one day acknowledges it, but the master motivator apparently crafted a solid dose of shame, humiliation and embarrassment to motivate his star slugger Albert Pujols.La Russa -- as manager of the the National League All-Star team last month -- deliberately humiliated his own player by leaving Pujols on the bench for the entire All-Star game, later offering implausible explanations that Pujols was being held in reserve as a pinch hitter.Pujols -- who had been playing anemically all year -- was put to shame not only before his teammates, fans and the public at large, but even family members whom he had flown to St. Louis to watch him.Pujols -- proud as only a Dominican can be proud -- was obviously shamed and shocked. The result: Since the All-Star break Pujols is hitting .351, with a .449 on-base percentage and .784 slugging.
2007 HR Derby Predictions
2007-07-10 00:38:00
I would like to quickly offer you my predictions for tonight's State Farm Home Run Derby before I head off to Ming's to watch. Obviously I'll be cheering for Prince hardcore tonight but he's not my pick to win it. I know there are a lot of really great lefties (Prince included) who are going to be making a few splashes out towards right. However, I'm going to go against my heart, and against the grain and go with a gut shot in saying that I think Albert Pujols will win the Derby this year.My number two guy would have to be Howard just because he won last year, is a lefty, and doesn't have to do any of the ASB festivities being as he isn't an all-star. He can just show up and hit the ball. My third pick can be Prince just for good measure. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go iron my Brewers jersey.
Let the All-Star Festivities Begin
2007-07-03 20:36:00
There seems to have been a dearth of shoddy sportswriting for a while, so we here at BTL haven?t had great material lately. Fortunately, every year the All-Star game rolls around, and sportswriters all over the country come crawling out of the woodwork to lament a snub of their favorite player, or else laud some other All-Star team appointment. In other words, BTL is quickly back in business. This time around, it?s Phil Sheridan of the Philadelphia Inquirer, who chooses not only to applaud the selection of the three Phillies who made it, but also to offer up a couple more would-be Phillies All-Stars.It's always easy to debate All-Star Game selections and even easier to criticize a voting process that sometimes rewards reputation over merit. But as far as the Phillies are concerned this year, the system worked.Well, maybe it worked as far as the Phillies are concerned, but does that mean it?s fair?Ryan Howard probably should be on the National League team. Despite his slow start and...
Albert Pujols (1B-STL)
2007-06-02 23:53:00
Albert Pujols was back in the starting lineup on Friday night and went 2 for 4 to raise his average to .295 for the season. Keep the slugger active in all formats, as his average should rise above .300 soon and stay there, along with home runs and RBI's that are sure to come. He's the best 1B in the game.

Albert Pujols = Modern Day Babe Ruth
2006-09-05 07:45:01
Albert Pujols hit three home runs yesterday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in St. Louis.  Pujols is a baseball freak so this may come as no major surprise. The part that is Ruthian is that Albert is the father of a girl with Down Syndrome and  yesterday was “buddy walk” day at the stadium. A few of the kids had a simple request for Albert. “Buddy walk” is a day the Cardinals have every year where kids with Down Syndrome can circle the field with the players and stand with them during pre-game introductions. Several of the kids during warmups asked Albert to hit a homer for them. Albert went out and hit home runs in his first three plate appearances. Children with Down Syndrome circled the field in pregame ceremonies and then stood with players at their positions during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” More than a few asked him to hit a home run for them. In his fourth trip to the plate Albert hit a long, deep fly ball that was caught on the warning tra...
