MALTEMPO IN ALBERTA
Alberta #1 in Population Growth
2009-10-13 23:38:00 Even in a recession Alberta is still more attractive than the rest of Canada. The province's population growth has lead the country between April and June. The reason is compared to the rest of Canada where unemployment rates are in the high nines Alberta still has a lot to offer with rates in the mid sevens.Population growth is always a good thing, it increases housing prices, retail sales and when the economy picks up again a willing labour force. It can put a strain on the infrastructure but overall the effects are positive.
Real Estate Prices Stabilizing in Alberta
2009-09-15 03:10:00 "The difference in the resale housing market now, compared to the beginning of the year, is night and day and nowhere is this more evident than in the West," said Dale Ripplinger, association president."Homebuyers recognize that interest rates and prices have bottomed out, and are taking advantage of excellent affordability before prices and interest rates move higher."A five-year fixed-rate mortgage, the most popular among consumers, is still available for less than four per cent at some financial institutions.Variable-rate mortgages, tied to prime, remain at about three per cent and are not expected to rise until June. The Bank of Canada has pledged not to change its lending rate until then -- but it is not an ironclad guarantee. The low rates seem to have worked and have the market even hotter than in 2007, a record year. July sales in 2009 were 3.9 per cent above the previous July high set in 2007.It has been a stunning reversal for a real estate market that had almost ground to ...
DELIZIE CULINARIE DELL?ALBERTA
Back to Lethbridge, and Winter in Alberta
2009-01-11 04:04:00 We left Lethbridge in a week when it was -40, so we really appreciated Hawaii. Unfortunately, the return home was correspondingly traumatic. We went from this:Sunset at our condo on Mauito this:Our patio furniture in LethbridgeBut we quickly discovered that there is no sympathy available for "jet lag climate syndrome". "You had two weeks in Hawaii?! We were stuck here in 40 below and 3 feet of snow the whole time! I had to shovel for three hours to clear my driveway, and I still couldn't go anywhere because the streets weren't plowed." And so on. One of the worst winters in Lethbridge in a long time...so a good time for us to have been gone. But we've discovered that our kids don't really understand cold. In my generation (I'm old, so think two generations ago), kids walked to school. (Okay, okay, I lived across the street from my school, but other kids walked up to 15 blocks to school). Today, we drive our kids to school, even though Tigana's school is only two blocks away. A...

2008-10-10 22:53:00 From CBC | Technology & Science News: The Alberta government is partnering with multinational conglomerate General Electric to improve water treatment and reuse in the province's oilsands projects, which consume enormous volumes of fresh water to produce oil. Two projects announ
If You Get A Traffic Ticket In Alberta, Just Claim You Are From Quebec
2008-07-04 19:12:00 Canada is reputed to be bi-lingual, that is actually a misnomer. Quebec speaks French, everywhere else in Canada, English is by far and away the prominent language. Here in Alberta, Cantonese, German, or even Tagilag are just as prevalent as French. In fact speaking Chinese or Punjabi is way more useful than French! We are however ...
Alberta, Province Of The Hidden Butt And The Expensive Happy Hour!
2008-07-04 14:47:00 Alberta may be the richest province in Canada, it has huge amounts of oil and gas, and with crude oil nearing the dreaded $150 a barrel level, Alberta is likely the only place in the world, outside of the Middle East that is booming. Booming also are silly laws. I guess with all this money floating ...
Alberta Goes 10-Digit Dialing - Are You Ready?
2008-06-24 19:04:00 Yesterday Albertans were reminded that the switch to 10-digit dialing is fast approaching. It was back in 2004 when the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) brought to our attention that we were running out of available phone numbers under the 403 and 780 area codes, and as a result of Alberta’s rapid population growth in the last few years the province is having to implement a third area code (587). Any new numbers in Alberta will now be given the 587 area code, regardless of where in Alberta you reside. Starting yesterday, Albertans were receiving a prerecorded reminder when making local calls that said: The local number you’ve dialed, must be preceded by its area code. Your call will now proceed. For future calls to this number, please dial the area code. This recording is simply a message to remind us that we should be taking the necessary steps, now, to reprogram our cell phones and phone systems, prior to the mandatory 10-digital diali...

Beige platform sandals by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti
2008-05-06 11:59:00 Beige platform sandals by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti I’m really enjoying the popular trend for sandals like these ones, that are high and strappy, but attending none of the “girliness” normally associated attending high, strappy sandals! They’re by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, and doesn’t that beige leather look gorgeous? The grossgrain straps help toughen them up just a little, and I cogitate they’d be the perfect way to equilibrium abroad a floaty summer adjust. They’re £240 at My-Wardrobe, who point abroad that the little sporty look will make it easy to bear these during the daytime like well like in the evening. Oh Look, Someone Else Discovered Alberta!
2008-04-22 15:13:00 This great nugget is from www.marketwatch.com:"A boom of unprecedented dimensions is sweeping Canada's spectacularly scenic western province of Alberta, the Texas-sized territory with a population of 3 million that is home to a pair of world-class cities -- Calgary (population 1.2 million) and Edmonton (population 1.1 million)." Marshall Loeb, Market WatchIt doesn't matter what the Edmonton property market does in the short term because all the international investors who are coming to Alberta, Canada are looking at the long-term. That is how the "strong hands" do it. For more information on Alberta Oilsands click hereBut I leave you with this:"Canada has rather rapidly become the largest supplier of oil to the U.S. Alberta is producing more than 1 million barrels of so-called synthetic oil a day, and the province is sitting atop the largest petroleum deposit outside the Arabian Peninsula (as much as 300 billion recoverable barrels). As a result, the economy of A...
Alberta Ferretti lace up wedge sandals with contrast piping
2008-04-17 13:45:00 Alberta Ferretti lace up wedge sandals with contrast piping Attempts to add high heels to casual, canvas shoes don't always go down too well - there's something just wrong about seeing what is essentially a sneaker with a huge wedge stuck to the bottom of it, so I was surprised to find myself not quite hating these ones by Alberta Ferrretti. No, I don't think I'd be willing to pay $575 for pair (In fact, I can't imagine parting with that sum of money for anything made out of canvas), but I do think they could look rather good, in a casual kind of way - one someone else, natch. If you agree, and you have just the sporty/preppy outfit to go with them, you'll find them at eLuxury.

These cork shoes are by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, and are $495 at eLuxury. The peep toe and sling back will allow you to flash both your toes and your heels, while the metallic cork gives a glamorous take on a classic summer shoe. Alberta Closed For Renovations
2008-04-01 01:33:00 As you’ve probably already heard, the Alberta provincial government announced last Wednesday that the province would be shutting down its borders for the next 18 months beginning April 2nd 2008.The announcement was made after repeated complaints by citizens that the economy was growing too fast, salaries increasing too rapidly (along with housing values) and that the higher demand for oil was contributing to a sense of ‘overwhelm’ in the province of 3.48 million people. The government reacted after receiving requests such as these from its Eastern neighbors, from Newfoundland Irene Casey said “ It’s been nearly 12 days since I’ve seen by husband Tim and our son Ryanâ€. The two set off to work in the manufacturing supplies center NE of Edmonton. They aren’t due back for another 3 days, but Mrs. Casey is feeling nervous after receiving a telephone message from husband Tim.“Don’t bother boiling any ‘taters for Ryan and me. We sent our first cheque back for $21,000 (...

"Is the Alberta Boom set to Bust?"
2008-03-22 01:05:00 Good question if you think in a Boom and Bust mentality...This is a reply to "Is Edmonton Real Estate Too Hot?"In reality what you have happening in the province of Alberta, specifically Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer cities is a healthy slow down in the market. It's not a Boom and Bust. It's not a 'Too Hot', in fact it has slowed enough to become a buyer's market- opening up the market for the first time in the past 2 years. When a market is firing on all cylinders it has growth stages and moderating stages where it absorbs the outflow of energy produced. It's a self-regulating safety valve so that the economy doesn't get overheated. As a sophisticated investor you don't want to target a market that is doing double digits year after year... you want to target a market that has a diverse, multi-tiered economy that is set to grow year after year.Too many novice investors (read: Speculators) chase the percentages. They look for the next 'Big Town' that is going to BOOM. When i...

Alberta tar sands documentary raises questions about the newest bonanza
2008-03-12 02:59:00 As the price of crude oil peaked today and another Hummer rolled out on to the asphalt, another hectare or three was dug up in Alberta, Canada - home to the elusive and mythical tar sands oil reserves. What rapacious oil companies and myopic politicians are calling "solutions" and "progress", others - from environmentalists to Human Rights advocates to First Nations communities - are calling the worst environmental disaster of the 21st Century. In the toxic dust that is the wild west resource grab of Canada's Texas, a small army of media activists and artists have been busy like bees who smell bad honey. Among the many, many media projects emerging from this free-for-all of pollution and profit is a new documentary to air on the CBC this week. The doc is TAR SANDS : THE SELLING OF ALBERTA. Alberta Elderly Left To Die
2008-03-11 12:00:00 OTTAWA, ONTARIO-"The president of NUPGE, the National Union of Public & General Employees, accused the Alberta government today of systematically stripping the elderly of their rights.""Most of these assisted living facilities are unlicensed, unregulated and unmonitored. It means the elderly are left essentially on their own. It's simply unacceptable that in this day and age in a country as rich, in a province as rich as Alberta, we can't do more for them."Clancy says the change in legislation began 30 years ago and has left the elderly without the protection afforded most Canadians. Ruth Adria, president of the Elder Advocates of Alberta Society, says there is extreme pressure placed on the guardians of the elderly to sign non-resuscitation consent forms when the elderly are admitted."As a result when an elderly person becomes ill, particularly in a locked unit where there's often little or virtually no staff, the elderly person is often just left to die and there's no inte...

There is also nothing wrong with stepping outside of the box to find a cure; in fact, hasn't most of science advanced based on happenstance? But charging parents for a cure to autism and cerebral palsy, but being unwilling to provide a) evidence that the treatment actually works (your own data or other, peer-reviewed research), b) the names of your neuroscientist "colleagues" or happy customers, and/or c) hard proof that you actually graduated the universities that you name-drop (apparently, both her undergraduate and graduate institutions record her taking courses but not having received a degree) - well, it's all hard to believe that someone could get away with stealing thousands on the premise of healing a sick child. You cannot fault the parents who purchased...

Fuel Shortages . . . in Alberta
2008-03-09 19:18:00 Alberta’s oil refineries in Upgrader Alley are operating at maximum capacity. As refineries are pushed to the max, the opportunity cost of a maintenance shutdown skyrockets. Furthermore, it’s becoming more difficult to find maintenance workers in today’s tight labour market. Thus, we expect to see more fires, more problems and more supply chain disruptions leading to ...

Last of the Wild and Free Alberta Assumables ?
2008-03-08 02:39:00 In Alberta we've been blessed for a longtime time with being able to assume properties without qualifying for the mortgage. For the past two years I've seen banks gradually tighten up their lending policies and require buyers to qualify for some assumable mortgages. In essence where we take over the existing mortgage, but still need to prove our repayment ability and that our credit is in good shape.Last June TD announced that they would cease allowing their mortgages to be assumed, and they have. A few other lenders followed suit; Rezmor and Scotia bank for example.February 26th 2008, RBC joined up stating that they too would require full qualifying.I have successfully used Agreement Of Sales in Alberta and Ontario when the market is favorable. Of course, there are many unique strategies to use as well as, rent-to-own and agreement of sale to name a couple. If you currently have deals tied up with RBC that are assumable, I believe that they will still honor them if they came in wi...
Alberta Oils Sands Land
2008-03-07 22:56:00 Did you hear about the hottest new vacation destination? It's Alberta Oil Sands Land, with a travel review by Thomas King:Personally, I was more interested in the Ralph Klein Earth Mover rides, but the lines were always much too long. In the end, I spent most of my time at the Waste Water Park, watching happy families relaxing and enjoying their tax dollars in action. But the best part of the entire vacation was watching the sun set each evening on what was left of the Athabasca River. Mr. Harper would strum his guitar and tell us how his heart swelled when he looked out over the landscape and saw the sheer beauty that human ingenuity and corporate genius could create. Even Mr. Dion got a little teary as we all watched the smoke stacks discharge their billows of pollutants. He said that the soft clouds floating over the high prairies reminded him of the old days when Native people sat around their council fires and told stories about living in harmony with the earth. All the kids wa...

Alberta Votes, Alberta Yawns, The Rest Of Canada Cringes
2008-03-05 05:43:00 The electoral process in Canada does not get the coverage that the US elections do. And yesterday was the big Provincial election here in Alberta. Up for grabs were the ‘premiership’, mayors, and members of the ’seat of power’ in Edmonton. I think it is possible to summarize the entire event as ‘a huge yawner’. Alberta is the richest Province in Canada, we have huge oil and gas reserves, the revenue from which the Federal Government in (hated Eastern Canada) would give their collective right arms for. No other Province runs runs an account book in the black. Alberta is also famous for completely ignoring elections. A turn out of 50% is considered a huge success. The Tory’s have held on to power for well over 30 years, and yesterday only added the rubber stamp, of the 83 seats available, the Tory’s took 72. A huge yawn, with a low turnout. The opposition ‘wannabes’ really didn’t appeal to the voters. Maybe the biggest ...
All The Brains Are Heading To Alberta
2008-03-05 04:01:00 New Statistics Canada figures show that along with tradespeople, there is a huge surge of post-secondary school graduates choosing Edmonton over trendy spots like Montreal and Vancouver. Why because smart people go where the money is!In Vancouver you can spend close to 70% of your income on housing, Montreal you can get a job but pay higher taxes than you would in Alberta.Or you could chose Alberta with the lowest taxes in Canada, highest salaries and enjoy quite good housing affordability. No wonder over 160,000 people have moved to Alberta over the last 7 years. With a higher quality of life and virtually limitless opportunities Alberta is where young smart professionals are choosing to make their home.

Alberta Election 2008 - Where Can I Vote
2008-03-03 18:57:00 The 2008 Alberta provincial elections are today, March 3, 2008. If you are trying to figure out where you can vote, you might have a bit of fun. My friend pointed out that he can't find the information on the Elections Alberta website and if you go to the Alberta 2008 Elections site right now (10:30AM), it says: The Elect2008 web site is unavailable at this time.
