Alfonso Soriano

Line of the Day: Alfonso Soriano
2008-05-18 01:55:00
Soriano has gone supernova -- yesterday, he posted his second two-home-run game in a row. He now has seven home runs in his last six games. The best part of this hot streak was on Friday when, after Alfonso rocketed the first pitch of the game over the left-field wall, the announcers called opposing pitcher Tom Gorzelanny either "stubborn or stupid" for throwing a first-pitch fastball strike to Soriano.Alfonso Soriano: 5-for-5, 3 runs, 2 HR, 3 RBI
Trendspotting: Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Beltran
2008-05-11 15:50:00
Well, this is my first shot at running a theme normally commandeered by Pete, but it's an issue that I find important. At this point in the season, you should start looking at your early round picks and asking whether you need to cut bait or keep fishing. For owners of Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano, or Carlos Beltran (or all three, in the case of my team in my favorite league...) there's definitely been reason for concern. Since A-Rod is hurt and really unsellable for decent value, we will focus on the other two, whose injuries have seemed to catch up to them this season.Alfonso Soriano: Even after Soriano's four-for-fiver yesterday, his batting average still stands at .223 and his power and speed numbers (3 HR, 3 SB) pale in comparison to most projections. I was curious how those numbers look when extrapolated over the entire season, since the left fielder did miss fourteen games this season, and he's currently on pace for only a 20-20 season. However, it's likely that some ...

Injury Updates For Alfonso Soriano and Ted Lilly Plus Some Age Speculation
2008-04-17 22:28:00
Non-BP susbcribing Chicago Cubs fans are the beneficiaries of Will Carroll's Under The Knife column this afternoon as injury updates on Alfonso Soriano and Ted Lilly are above the subscriber fold.  Like every other UTK, there is interesting information below that fold.  One of those pieces concerns Erik Bedard.  Apparently, the Mariners' play-off hope spent some time on the DL for a hip issue back in 2000! I picked up another interesting piece of information listening the "The Rotowire Fantasy Sports Hour with Chris Liss".  On Tuesday night, Mr. Liss' guest was Jeff Erickson of Rotowire.  In a search to explain the unexplainable drop-off-the-cliff performance of Dodgers' CF Andruw Jones, Mr. Erickson offered up the possibility that Andruw Jones is older than his listed age of 31. This is an angle I had not heard, but it fits the sudden drop in hitting skills and the attendent weight gain.  He looks like he is adding weight the way a man a few years ...
Cubs LF Alfonso Soriano (calf) replaced in first inning (AP)
2008-04-16 02:40:00
Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano never came to bat Tuesday night against the Cincinnati Reds after straining his right calf in the top of the first, apparently while catching Ken Griffey’s inning-ending fly ball. Mike Fontenot came up to pinch-hit for Soriano, the Cubs’ leadoff batter. Soriano often hops as he catches the ball in ...

No longer the new kid in town, Alfonso Soriano reports early to Cubs? camp
2008-02-17 23:31:00
Alfonso Soriano reported to Chicago Cubs camp Sunday, a day ahead of the reporting date for position players. Unlike last year, the buzz was minimal. Soriano was the center of attention a year ago because he had just signed a $136 million, eight-year contract to leave the Washington Nationals for the Cubs, the team’s biggest ...
Alfonso Soriano homers twice and Cubs beat Pirates 9-5 to solidify NL Centr
2007-09-22 21:49:00
Alfonso Soriano hit two of Chicago’s four homers and had five RBIs as the Cubs continued their late-season power display, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-5 Saturday to solidify their lead in the NL Central. The Cubs began the day with a 1 1/2 -game lead over Milwaukee, which played later at Atlanta. Read the full story. ...
Fantasy Baseball - Rick Ankiel, Danys Baez, Alfonso Soriano
2007-09-07 16:18:00
The big MLB news yesterday was not Cardinals' OF Rick Ankiel's 2HR/7 RBI day, which brought took his 81 AB major league totals to 9 HRs and 29 RBI, but the revelation by the Daily News of New York that he was a mail-order HGH purchaser for the 2004 calendar year.  After weeks of adulation from all corners, I wonder how those sportswriters, specifically Peter Gammons of ESPN who wrote ,"Every time I look at Rick Ankiel, I think he is a better man than me," will treat this latest information.  Will they soothe their cognitve dissonace by excusing Ankiel's actions or will they say, "Oops.  I may have been more hyperbolic than Chicken Little on the day the sky didn't fall." Brought into a 6-6 game to pitch the ninth inning, Orioles closer Danys Baez allowed a run to bring his 2007 W-L record to an ugly 0-6.  I cannot help thinking that he'd be out of the 9th inning role already if the Orioles had another viable option.  The recently-recalled Fernando Cabrer...
My World In Sports: What I've Been Waiting For
2007-08-29 06:11:00
I just got done studying and I wanted to quick come at you with what has me all excited in the world of sports right now.I Am Ready For Some Football! After a few pretty quiet weeks in the sports world (maybe minus the Little League WS?) I am definitely ready for some football. The College Football season will officially kick off on Thursday...even though it technically started for me last Thursday with a 59-0 smackdown of Humbolt State. It will be perfect because I don't have class on Thursdays so I can get my laundry and studying done during the day and then tune in to some football in the evening! Although the games aren't much to look at. However, I highly encourage all sports fans out there to tune in to the LSU vs. Miss St. game just to see how good the Tigers are going to be. Or, maybe rather how poor the Bulldogs will be. Also a game to tune into might be the Tulsa vs. Louisiana-Monroe game if you're looking for something a little closer. Mostly just enjoy watching the bea...
Soriano Will Miss 2-4 Weeks [Michael Vinciguerra]
2007-08-06 19:38:00
After getting a hit and entering first base safely, the next events would leave Soriano and the Cubs devastated. A single by Ryan Theriot caused Soriano to move to second, but he wanted more. Rounding second it looked as if he would make it to third without a sweat. However, halfway there he began limping, but even while limping he still hustled. He was thrown out at third, but even worse, strained his right quadriceps and will be out 2-4 weeks.Soriano was their all-star left-fielder, leadoff hitter, leader of the team in home runs, and an all-around great player. This is a MAJOR loss for the Cubs, or rather, a team at the edges of making the playoffs. The Cubs are currently 1 game behind the Brewers for first place in the NL Central.Soriano was scheduled for an MRI immediately after Sunday night's game.On a brighter note, my personal congrats to Tom Glavine for his 300th win. I am not a Mets fan, so why am I congratulating him? The answer is because I'm a Braves fan, and three q...
Alfonso Soriano Drops From Another Leg Injury
2007-08-06 13:13:00
The Giants gave us a night off from Barry Bonds Watch 2007 so we could catch Tom Glavine’s 300th (Congrats Tom). But more important to Chicago Cubs fans, than their loss to the Mets, is the fact the Alfonso Soriano came up lame trying to get to third from first last night. Early reports give Soriano owners the bad news of 2-4 weeks out due to the injury. It’s the second time this season Soriano has missed time due to a leg injury. Rob, over at The Cub Reporter, has some interesting scenarios as to how the Cubs should handle this injury to Soriano. *** UPDATE *** Possible Soriano Replacements [Roto Authority] Losing Soriano [Baseball Musings] Technorati Tags: Chicago Cubs, Alfonso Soriano
Cubs? Alfonso Soriano out 2-to-4 weeks after injuring quad running the base
2007-08-06 05:53:00
Chicago Cubs star left fielder Alfonso Soriano strained his right quadriceps during Sunday’s 8-3 loss to the New York Mets and will be sidelined 2-to-4 weeks. Soriano singled with two outs in the third for Chicago’s first hit and then tried to go to third on a single by Ryan Theriot. Soriano pulled up between ...
Cubs? Alfonso Soriano hurt running the bases against the Mets (AP)
2007-08-06 03:16:00
Chicago Cubs star left fielder Alfonso Soriano had to leave Sunday night’s game against the Mets after pulling up lame as he tried to run from first to third on a single. The team said it was a strained right quadriceps. Soriano left the game and was replaced by Cliff Floyd. Soriano had singled with ...
And All It Took Was One Tantrum...
2007-07-24 18:47:00
As the Cubs continue their speedy rise towards the top of the NL Central, and are now contending with the Brewers, theories as to their sudden spurt are arising everywhere. Of course, those of us ?in the know? are not surprised. The Cubs had been underperforming their run differential for a long time, and those who knew this also knew that it was likely that they would eventually play well again. Those who didn?t know this, however, have taken to theorizing about the galvanizing effect of Lou Piniella?s ejection a month or so ago. Jeff Passan, over at Yahoo! Sports is one of these people, as is Alfonso Soriano, so let?s hear their feelings on the topic."The biggest thing to me is when Lou got kicked out of the game," said outfielder Alfonso Soriano, whose story begins with the events of June 2.That was the biggest thing to Soriano. Not his own enhanced performance, nor the rebound of Carlos Zambrano from mediocrity, nor a number of improvements on the part of the players. Of course,...
