CONCORD, N.C. — Six days after winning the pole for the Sprint All-Star Race, Kyle Busch is up front again at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. SPEED notches record ratings for All-Star Race
2008-05-20 13:05:00
SPEED scored its highest rating in network history, earning a Nielsen Media Research mark of 3.74 (2,701,000 households), up six percent from last year’s 3.53 (2,480,000 Households), making it the No. 1 network in basic cable during its coverage of All-Star Race XXIV on Saturday. The event, in its second of eight seasons on SPEED, peaked at 4.75 (3,430,000 households) and drew a network record four million viewers. All-Star Race Kasey Kahne needed the Fan Vote just to have the opportunity to compete in the Sprint All-Star Race. Then on old tires, he pulled away from Greg Biffle in the final segment to become the first voted-in winner of the event. Complete coverage "We are jacked up about seeing record ratings for the second consecutive year, and we are very aware that it is a total team effort that delivered these results," SPEED president Hunter Nickell said. Caution-free All-Star race a rarity even for the drivers
2008-05-19 10:05:00
CONCORD, N.C. — In 24 years of the All-Star race, crashes have dominated the highlight reel. Rusty Wallace and Darrell Waltrip in 1989; Davey Allison winning and then spending the night in the hospital in 1992; even last season’s event had two crashes, highlighted by the Busch brothers’ tangle. But the 2008 Sprint All-Star Race will go down in history as the first one since 2001 to not have a DNF due to a crash. Twenty-two of the 24 cars finished on the lead lap with the only DNFs belonging to Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin, both for engine problems. All-Star Race Unofficial Results Pos. Driver Make 1. JGR engine experiment backfires in All-Star event
2008-05-19 10:05:00
CONCORD, N.C. — Joe Gibbs Racing’s head engine builder, Mark Cronquist, knows if he’s going to build outside the proverbial box, the All-Star race is the time to do it. And so he did, but after watching three engines fail in one weekend, Cronquist admits he got a little "greedy." Denny Hamlin dropped out in the fourth segment. “ This stuff you wouldn’t try in a regular race. ” J.D. GIBBS "We got some new stuff coming and it is really good and we should’ve brought it, but we got greedy and brought more than that," he said. "So it was just probably more my greed than anything, but you come to this race with all your guns loaded." After dominating the first segment of Saturday night’s Sprint All-Star Race, the No. 18 of Kyle Busch faltered in the second. Attempts at repairs during the break before the third 25-lap segment were futile (watch video). "This was a new piece and it was pretty ...
All-Star Game 2008: My All-Star Ballot
2008-05-19 09:13:00
I love the All-Star game. At no other point in the season does more discussion take place on player performance, merit, entitlement, etc…on a game that doesn’t even matter. This time it counts! No, it really doesn’t. Still, I vote. It’s a yearly event and I love it. At no other ...
17/05/2008: Nascar Sprint All-Star Challenge (Lowe)
2008-05-18 12:04:00
Kyle Busch felt like he gave one away Saturday night, and Carl Edwards was already stewing on how he would spend the winner's $1 million purse. Greg Biffle was poised for a Sunday stroll to Victory Lane. But when the checkers flew over the Sprint All-Star Challenge at Lowe's Motor Speedway, the guy who had planned to watch the race from his couch with a few cold beers was standing in the winner's circle, drenched in a few dozen cold beers. See, Kasey Kahne wouldn't even have been in the main event were it not for an online fan vote, one that propels the highest vote-getter with a still-drivable car in the qualifying Showdown into the big-money game. But there he was, starting shotgun on the 24-car field. By the end of the first 25-lap segment he'd driven to 13th position. By Lap 50 he was eighth. At the end of the third segment he was seventh. And on the final pit stop with 25 laps remaining, crew chief Kenny Francis opted for fuel only, giving Kahne crucial track position ...

NASCAR All-Star Race – Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards as Kasey Kahne, the fan f
2008-05-18 04:54:00
You know, last month I wrote a controversy article asking the question, should the NASCAR All-Star race be moved? My whole look at this was moving the All-Star race to a racetrack that either doesn’t already have a Cup Series date or only has one Cup Series date. At Least to me, the All-Star is a lot like a Cup date, it’s huge, it for the most part draws in record number of fans and even though I still believe that the All-Star race should be on a short-track like Iowa Speedway (but not that far away), I understand why the all-star race is so successful in Charlotte, it’s home. Over 90% of the teams are located in and around the Concord and Charlotte area, plus Humpy Wheeler does do a good job putting on a good show, now if they could only fix the fall charlotte Cup Series race, maybe that should go instead. So with that said, what an emotional weekend, hats off to Matt Crafton as he picked up his first Truck Series victory in 178 starts, this is for everyone including the fans...
Kahne goes from All-Star voted-in to Victory Lane
2008-05-18 01:05:00
CONCORD, N.C. — Sometimes it pays to be popular. On Saturday night, it paid Kasey Kahne $1 million. Voted into the Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway after he failed to make the field in the Sprint Showdown qualifying race, Kasey Kahne made the most of his opportunity by winning the All-Star event and the $1 million prize that goes with the victory. Kahne goes from All-Star voted in to Victory Lane
2008-05-18 00:05:00
CONCORD, N.C. — Kasey Kahne technically wasn’t eligible to run the Sprint All-Star Race. He didn’t let that stop him from stealing the $1 million prize. Kahne earned his berth in Saturday night’s show not through accomplishment on the track, but in a popularity contest that permitted one driver voted on by the fans to compete in the main event (read more). It gave Kahne a chance to run in the 100-lap shootout, which was intermittently dominated by Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle and Dale Earnhardt Jr. With a gamble on the final pit stop, Kahne put the field in his rearview mirror to become the first driver ever voted in by the fans to win, and just the third driver in All-Star history to advance from the preliminary race and claim the final trophy at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. "I thank them so much. I can’t believe it. The car was mediocre in the open and the fans voted me in,” said Kahne, who finished fifth in the Sprint Showdown. Kahne didn&...
