Blackberry And Almond Shortcrust Tartelettes
2008-06-02 17:00:00
I am warning you this is another loaded post but having a food blog makes you part of an awesome group of people worldwide and when this community reaches out for help...I just jump because they have given me so much already.I never thought I?d say this but I am exciting to see June. I usually love May and all the promises that Spring carries. That lighter feel in your step, the days being longer and filled of beautiful sunsets, the trees in full blooms, produce getting a new skin at the store? But as much as the first half of May was filled with joyous and sweet moments such as Marcela?s visit or my birthday, the end of May turned quickly bitter-sweet as well as full and empty at the same time. Before I forget...I am having a bad case of what B. called "Gruyere Head": the lovely apron in the first picture was a handmade gift of Holly's mother-in-law and I have been starring at it for a couple of weeks now, unable to put it on, afraid I'd stain it...I know aprons are meant to be wo...

COFFEE ROASTED ALMOND BISCOTTI...a handsome combination!
2008-05-24 03:08:00
"I am not a glutton, I am an explorer of food"Erma Bombeck Coffee & Roasted Almonds...a handsome combination I have my biscotti moments...at times, I will suddenly alight & set off to make a biscotti with a 'flavour of the moment' off the top of my head. This particular moments' flavour turned out to be coffee & roasted almonds. A delicious, crisp biscotti! I made these some time ago, & am tempted to set off & bake some now....only problem being that I've cut a nerve in the palm of my right hand & am incapacitated as far as baking/cooking goes. Which leaves me with very little to do; torturous, but my own fault. Was careless & got a shard of broken ceramic do the damage...:0( Biscotti date to Ancient times. The term literally means "twice baked." These hard biscuits fueled armies and fed travelers. Flavor variations and culinary techniques evolved according to time and place. German zweiback, Jewish mandelbrot, British ship's biscuit, and American ha...

Faith?s ?Abox? almond toe jersey pumps
2008-05-15 14:07:00
Faith's 'Abox' almond toe jersey pumps "Jersey pumps". Now those even sound comfortable, don't they? As for how comfortable they'll be in real life, well, I couldn't say for sure without trying them on, but the fact that they have a low, concealed wedge heel is good news, giving your poor old feet that little bit more in the way of support than you'd get from a pair of flats. These are casual but very chic, and would look great paired with a summery skirt or pair of shorts. The jersey fabric is even more apparent in the grey version, and both colours are 25 from Faith.
Review Zone Perfect Diet Bars Flavor Dark Chocolate Almond Bar, ZonePerfect
2008-05-12 15:52:00
My Review: I have always been a fan of Zone Bars reminds me of rice crispy bars. I have been eating them for many years with trying many flavors. Normally I have my favorite flavors usually stick with them with sometimes trying the new ones. They have new flavor called Dark Chocolate Almond of Zone Perfect Bars. I am a fan of chocolate and almonds together so I had to try it. I bought this product at a store. I think the packaging is very appealing with the gold and brown it caught my attention to try it too it tastes so good. Bars tastes like dark chocolate with the pieces of almonds really makes it so great. It feels like I am eating this amazing naughty chocolate dessert. It tastes so unhealthy but it is a healthy bar with 12 grams of protein, 19 vitamins and minerals. I eat them during the week because I don?t have time to cook anymore it gives me energy to work. They are filling I am not hungry after eating them at all. Great when I have a sweet tooth for chocolate this bar wo...

Darren Almond, Fire Under Snow, Parasol Unit
2008-03-27 15:45:00
Two pieces at Darren Almond?s new show transfixed my philistine mind: ?Tide? and ?Bearing.? You encounter the first as soon as you walk into the Parasol Unit. A completely bare room greets you with large white walls, in a gallery? No way. Taking up one of the vast walls is a sea of clocks. Not the friendly clocks with hands but those evil ones that clack. They?re not intrinsically evil but fill me with the horror of being forcibly pulled from a pleasant dream or the soul-destroying nature of working at some large corporation as a temp. This ?Tide? of clocks sound off every minute with a near deafening ?clack.? 600 clocks clacking in unison is one of the more disturbing noises you?re likely to hear off Hoxditch. Almond has succeeded in managing to isolate abstract time but whether it was his idea to put the receptionist in the same room facing this ?sculpture to inevitability,? is uncertain. Probably a sadistic curator was involved.?Bearing? takes naming to a new level. You sit in a d...
Lucky Comestible II (2): Almond-Quinoa Muffins
2008-03-27 01:31:00
Well.  So.  It snowed again yesterday.  Actually, it stormed; we got about 5 cm. (2 inches) to add to the–what?  478 cm?  792 cm?  14 kilometers?–pre-existing- snow already piled in mini-glaciers beside every driveway, walkway, sidewalk, and garage.  And there I was, once again stuck in the house, avoiding the pelting flakes and ice pellets.   I imagine this is what it feels like to live in perma-frost, constantly surrounded by the white stuff with no end in sight. I feel exactly like Captain Robert Scott must have felt on one of his forays to the South Pole, holed up with his companions in his ice-shack as refuge against the elements.  Just as he did in his famous diary, I could easily write an entry something like this: Bitter storms accosted the crew today, forcing the team to head indoors.  We huddle by the makeshift fire and attempt to warm our weary, frostbitten hands.  Thrashing winds surround us at every turn.  All but forsaken in this fri...
Pear and Almond Yogurt Cake (Low-Fat Snack Cake)
2008-03-24 16:19:00
As we herald spring in most of the parts of the country, seasonal fruits and vegetables can be seen in all their glory, and a trip to the farmer's market can turn out to be a visually delectable experience! Oranges, pears and strawberries are flocking the markets in California, and what better way to binge on the goodness of these fruits than to bake them in a cake! Juicy and sweet, with a soft, buttery yet somewhat grainy texture, the whitish-grren as well as the red pears were once referred... Please Click the Title for the Full Post

Darren Almond: Fire Under Snow
2008-03-14 02:21:00
Time is of great importance to the British artist Darren Almond and the perception of its passing features in all his work—whether it be film, installation or photography. From an external perspective the time is certainly now for Almond who has started the year with concurrent shows in two very prestigious London galleries; undoubtedly this is not a happy coincidence, but perfect planned synchronicity. The first show at the White Cube in Hoxton finished last month, the second at the Parasol unit runs until the end of March. During a talk in the Parasol unit last week the artist contetuxalized his current work by describing his childhood in Northern England, whiling away the hours trainspotting and being brought up by two parents whose jobs, father down the mine and mother in a factory, were ruled by clocking on and clocking off. Trains, mines, factories, work and of course time all play an important part in this show, but these themes have been transferred from rural England ...
LIME CHOCOLATE ALMOND SHORTBREAD TART...Making it YELLOW for IWD!!
2008-03-09 15:25:00
“Men become passionately attached to women who know how to cosset them with delicate tidbits.”Honoré de Balzac Lime Chocolate Almond Shortbread Tart...making it YELLOW!!Got a mail from the talented Zorra @ Kochtopf the other day announcing an event being co hosted by her for International Women's Day on 8th March. In her words..."fiordisale asked me to organize with her a special event for International Women's Day. March 8 is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. Food connects people, so we would like to invite you to cook or bake something yellow for this special day. Yellow because on this day in Southern countries there is the tradition to give sprigs of bright yellow Mimosa flowers to women. The flowers are intended as a sign of respect and also an expression of solidarity with the women in their support for oppressed women worldwide. So this year, instead of the Mimosa sprigs, we will make yellow food! Some Natural Diaper Creams have Almond Oil-- Avoid Using with Nut Allergic
2008-03-06 04:20:00
I've gotten pretty good at reading food labels at the grocery store, and thankfully have not had any major exposures to nuts with my allergic daughter. So I was shocked a few months ago when I was slathering her bum with Burt's Bees diaper cream, and causally looked at the ingredients. There it was, plain as day. Not in bold, like I have been trained to look for in food, but in the pretty cursive font they use for their ingredient list. Sweet Almond Oil. I had been inadvertently exposing my peanut and tree nut allergic child to almond oil directly on her skin. Nice. Very smart. Thankfully she had no reactions, but I quickly tried to find something else to use. But before I buy anything I also look at its safety rating over at the Environmental Working Group's database called Skin Deep. I found Jason Organics? diaper cream was well rated. No dice. Same deal, it has sweet almond oil in it. I've been trying Avalon Organics? bum cream now, but it is rather like an ointme...

No Knead Brioche With Pink Almond Praline
2008-03-05 06:14:00
Yes I hear you, "another brioche post", and I want to tell you that when you can't reach overhead for a few days and that soup is not really appealing after surgery, brioche is like food send from angels way up above. I had surgery yesterday and my lovely mother-in-law brought me a big pot of soup...and what did I do? I ate brioche instead...for dinner! No veggies, no protein, just pure unadulterated butter and flour. What makes me happy about this brioche is the little pink praline inside and the little story that goes along with it. I have had a huge crush on Guillemette from Chocolat et Caetera for over a year now. I can't tell you how many times I leave the house and her latest post is still on my computer screen, how many times I look at her desserts and admire the pure taste and flavors she combines. She is smart, fun and beautiful. She is my girl crush, quoi! A few months ago we started talking about the things we missed about France for me and the US for her (food of course...

Pineapple Almond Cheesecakes With Caramelized Pineapple
2008-02-25 06:42:00
We all know the phrase "when life throws you lemons make lemonade" and while I am not going to tell you that when life throws you pineapples you should made pineapple-ade, I do have admit that our kitchen counter tops did look like they were sprouting pineapples like mad this past week.It started when Sunny, my wonderful produce guy cornered me near the okra "Hey! It's been a while since I saw pineapples on your blog!" Oh dear! He read the bits about himself then...maybe I should make him sound like he is Mark Wahlberg's perfect look alike?....Hugh, I digress..."Hmm, I did sorbet once at the very beginning...." He then pushed 3 perfect little pineapples down in my cart "Well then, that's settled! These should give you some materials to bake with!" I already had my hands full with baking this week, so I was unsure if I would get to them in time, but given that pineapples are the symbol of hospitality and good wishes, I could not refuse. You don't have to be anywhere special to s...

Taste & Create VI: Cranberry Almond Blondies
2008-02-19 08:32:00
I realized late last night that time was running out for Taste & Create VI, and with the rest of our week already planned out and our being out of town this weekend, my options for creating a dish from Kelly's Sounding My Barbaric Gulp were dwindling. Luckily, she recently featured a recipe that sounded quick, delicious, and utilized ingredients that we (for the most part) already had on hand. I did have to make a substitution: fresh raspberries have been hard to come by recently, so I substituted frozen cranberries that I still had on hand from the last T&C event. Huzzah for that miracle of the modern age, the ice-box.Lisa says:How is it that you ended up baking again?Chris says:I don't know -- at least this time there aren't any professional bakers around to taste my wares.Lisa says:And it looks like this one only took like an hour...Chris says:Yes! Very easy, and I'm happy with the results. I like the tartness of the cranberries against the sweet of the cake.Lisa says:I ...
LOVIN? it up with Sweet Almond and Oranges
2008-02-13 23:27:00
I?m always on the lookout for the ultimate beauty combo, one that can provide a good scent and luscious skin. My favorite, for DRY SKIN only, is a good creamy wipe, off cleanser. So I have never been so satisfied as I was to find LA FLEUR ORGANIQUE gentle cleanser with sweet almond and orange blossom. This pink cleansing lotion smells like sweet fruit and soothes away any wintery redness. This is a great segue into spring...Another product I love, that?s a derivative of oranges, and just as healthy is the DR. OBAGI SYSTEM PROFESSIONAL -C SERUM 20%. It?s a lightweight slightly sticky solution that makes your skin glow. And glowing skin is a year round desirable.Xoxo Di

Earl Grey Cake with Kumquat Marmalade and Almond Meringue Buttercream
2008-01-30 06:29:00
My brother celebrated his birthday last weekend, and, of course, I offered to make him a cake. He loves Earl Grey tea, so he requested that the cake somehow incorporate this flavor. After some brainstorming, I came up with the idea to flavor the cake itself with the tea. I like to make my cakes such that they have some sort of fruit filling and, if it works, some sort of nut on top of a flavored frosting. For this cake, I picked kumquats because their tart citrus flavor would complement the bergamot in the tea, and almonds for their mild nuttiness. My brother celebrated his birthday last weekend, and, of course, I offered to make him a cake. Doodhi/Lauki Kofta Curry (BottleGourd Dumplings) in Almond and Cream Gravy
2008-01-28 20:04:00
Kofta Curry is a very famous Indian curry, and goes through endless variations. Though paneer, cheese and vegetables seem to be the favorites, I also like the simple koftas made from lauki, called bottle-gourd in English. This elongated gourd vegetale is quite nutritious too, especially good for your eyes and skin, and due to the rich water content, it can add to the softness in the koftas. This one is a very low-fuss recipe that comes from my mom's kitchen, and unlike the restaurant-style Malai Koftas, these dudhi koftas require minimal preparation and cooking time, and yet can make any meal special. I modified my mom's recipe to pair almonds with bottle-gourd, and also make the curry more richer by using almond and cream in the gravy. The result was delicious, and I urge you to try this bottlegourd kofta curry to serve with your parthas or simple jeera rice!Ingredients1/2 mid-sized bottlegourd1 cup besan (chickpea flour)1/2 cup blanched almondsslivered almonds - for garnish1 med...

Almond Mocha Iced Coffee (Frappucino)
2008-01-21 18:01:00
Simple pleasures in life often come in small packages, and this is something that we experienced last night. Dinner was done, we were playing cards with friends, and suddenly all of us had this huge urge for something sweet. Coffee was another unanimous choice as we had a long night ahead (full of poker can cards:)), and I for once was not in the mood to spend more than 10 minutes in the kitchen. So we settled for some simple Cold Coffee. Ideally, that would be paired with ice cream, but as our fridge did not hold any, I had no choice but to settle for a simpler version. As luck would have it, I had some almond essence, hersheys chocolate syrup, and whip cream! Yes, the result couldn't have been any better at 11 pm at night!! The Almond-flavored chocolate-coffee frappucino was a perfect dessert for our midnight craving!:)Ingredients2 cups milk5-6 ice cubes2 tbsp Hersheys chocolate syrup2 tsp almond essence (optional)2-3 tbsp instant coffee powderWhip Cream - for toppingcherriies - ...
Apple, Pear and Almond Crostata
2008-01-19 21:16:00
Crostata is yet another food that has many, many versions. The traditional "home" made crostata is simply pie dough topped with jam and sometimes a lattice of dough. Other versions, like this one, are made with whole fruit like apples or berries. Some use almond paste as a base under the fruit.
