Aloha was responsible for 85 percent of all goods flown between O'ahu and the Neighbor Islands.Everybody on the neighbor islands is going to be massively impacted by this. The Big Isle, Maui, Kaui, Moklokai, Lanai, everybody except Oahu. Retailers and wholesalers of baked goods, produce, meat, medical supplies, newspapers, auto parts, construction materials, and just about anything on those islands that comes from Oahu, which is just about everything! First Aloha Airlines shuts down, now ATA does the same....
2008-04-05 09:02:00 Hawaii has just lost roughly 15 percent of it's mainland arrivals in the last few days... that's pretty big news here. I've already had to juggle my schedule next week to accomodate divers who were delayed a couple days trying to get here, may lose a charter or two out of it. I currently have customers who are diving with me who just found out today (from Cathy and I) they might not have a way home set up at this point... the ATA flights are going to be tough to replace right away. Apparently Hawaiian is trying to add what flights they can, but they can only do so much.It'll be curious to see how this all shakes out. It was very quiet at the harbor today, several of the boats I see regularly at the boat ramp and boat wash at the end of the day weren't on the water today. I know at least one of them had to cancel today's charter as they're customers were caught up in the closings.Interesting times, so far other than a little schedule juggling I'm not feeling the sting too ...

The State will ask the bankruptcy court to not allow the closure but that may not have any effect. Expect another airline to come in and purchase what remains of the company in a short time... hopefully.Aloha and Hawaiian had attempted to merger a few years back to attempt to create a larger, healthy company. The state wouldn't allow it despite pricing lock guarantees. When that fell through prices went up and the two companies have been struggling to do well since. Go Airlines came in a couple years ago and has offered artificially low prices which has weakened both companies. While benefitting passengers for the short term, it's made it tough for everyone to operate. Both companies have sued Mesa, the parent company of Go. Hawaiian won thier suit and was awarded 80 million, Aloha's suit is ongoing.Hopefully someone steps in soon to service the interisland traffic or things could ...

2008-03-24 00:24:00 Aloha Airlines has filed bankruptcy for the second time in as many years. This may be bad news for the company. In filing, they are asking court permission to continue operations however it will be interesting to see what happens. There is a good chance that this may be the end of the airline. They could be forced to sell off some of their planes or even be sold to another airline. Aloha's claim for its problems is that Mesa Air is participating is "predatory pricing" forcing Aloha to lower prices and not generate enough revenue to operate properly. If, the company cannot compete with other airlines, how can a bankruptcy court see it being any different on the other side of a chapter 11 filing? Either way, we will be saying aloha to the old Aloha and will have to wait and see if we say aloha to a new and improved airline on the other side.

2008-02-16 22:06:00 More cruise news is rearing its ugly head this week, this time around from Norwegian Cruise Line with cuts to capacity to its Hawaiian market where it enjoys a near monopoly, and hints they could be pulling out altogether. They're subsidiary, NCL America, was at one point featuring sailings from Hawaii with four ships. Three of which were flagged from the United States, a requirement to be able to sail the ships on a purely Hawaii itinerary.Last year, NCL retired the Norwegian Wind from the fleet. This year, the Pride of America was repositioned as the Norwegian Jade. Now, this week, NCL America further reduced capacity in Hawaii by announcing that it would be transferring the Pride of Aloha to its parent company, Star Cruises, and targeting the ship to serve the Asian Market.
