Sic Alps - A Long Way Around To A Shortcut
2008-09-03 18:51:00 Over the past two years, guitarist Mike Donovan and drummer Matthew Hartman have used an old 8-track to document their reverb-drenched hallucinations, producing a relatively steady stream of releases in limited-edition 7″, 12″ and cassette format that have all long been snatched up by eager fans and vinyl-hungry collectors. Scour the internet if you like, ...
Sic Alps
2008-08-28 17:30:00 True to their throwback ?60s sound San Francisco duo Sic Alps have been releasing music on cassette tapes and 7-inches through the label Animal Disguise for the past couple of years. And although their recent full-length, U.S. EZ, is available in the more modern format of compact disc the group still wallows in similiar territory, this time with the Philly-based label Siltbreeze, the same dude who brought us Eat Skull, Times New Viking, and Psychedelic Horseshit. Although music writers must shy away from the industry?s new four-letter-word, ?lo-fi?, Sic Alps use a stripped-down approach normally attributed to said term. Their drums are coated with distortion and their dual vocals emerge through a cloud of hissing four-track fuzz. Even though the band sullies their instruments with fuzzy-psych flavors it?s the tight-knit vocal harmonies that make Sic Alps both palatable and reminiscent of the glory days of ?60s psych-folk. On U.S. EZ Matt Hartman and Mike Donovan give us a moderate...

Away from the Alps, the uninvited dream
2008-06-08 02:52:00 Now Euro 2008 is in full swing, spare a thought for those not invited to the party.36 European nations failed to make it to the Alps. England might stand out among them, but also missing is 2006 World Cup quarter-finalists Ukraine, plus nations of the calibre of Belgium, Serbia, Denmark, Slovakia, Norway and Ireland.England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland really should have revived the British Championship this summer and for extra spice added the Republic of Ireland and as a wild card, Gibraltar.A friendly with Gibraltar from any of the four UK nations with an empty diary this month would be a nice affirmation of the peninsula's desires to stay British. The Rock is not affiliated to UEFA, thanks to Spain's filibustering, so like an ugly girl or boy, they are desperate for any date. Given that it is customary to play a reciprocal fixture at your visitors' stadium after inviting them to yours, England could easily drop by for 90 minutes, though the apes would probably nick t...

Yves Rossy has spent 5 years training for this & finally he fulfilled his dream. Its said that so far Rossy & his sponsors, which includes a Swiss watch company Hublot, have poured more than $285,000 & many hours of work into building the device. The Splendor Of The Austrian Alps
2008-04-23 09:11:00 As chance would have it, the gods contrived to deposit the Courtesan in a place most charming. Millstatt am See, Carinthia, Austria is known worldwide for its renaissance churches, fortresses, palaces, rolling hills and misty mountains. With its champagne air, world-class cuisine and big bouncy beds. It makes an excellent spot for trysts of all kinds, that of lovers and those desirous of the rites of this goddess. This unusual European town is cherished by philosophers, writers and courtesans. Investors seek 'something different' in the Alps
2008-04-11 02:00:00 Overseas property investors who want to buy something different to the norm are increasingly looking in the Alps, according to analysts. The BuyAssociation website stated that the area is proving to be an appealing choice because it offers a number of lifestyle and financial attractions. For example, visitors can enjoy numerous outdoor pursuits such as skiing, horse riding, walking, mountain biking and paragliding. Furthermore, it is an affordable place to reach and is easily accessible for 12 months of the year. Paul Collins, property editor at BuyAssociation, commented: "You can get low cost flights to the Alpine regions pretty much all year round," He added that many people who own properties in the Alps often let them out to visiting holidaymakers. The comments come after currency exchange firm HiFX recommended that prospective buyers look for an Alpine property in the summer. Mark Bodega, director of the company, said this is because investors are more likely t...
Debian Lenny: new kernel, new problem, plus the best distros for the Alps t
2008-03-29 16:04:00 The Linux kernel is a funny thing. A new kernel should mean increased functionality, but for me and my old-and-getting-older machines, I only seem to lose functionality with upgraded kernels. I hadn't updated Debian Lenny in a while on the $0 Laptop (the Gateway Solo 1450), and when I did it today, I noticed a new kernel being added to the system: 2.6.24-1. I didn't think about the new kernel when I next booted into Lenny, but when I did, I soon discovered that my sound card didn't work anymore. I looked at all the settings, tweaked a bit here and there, but still nothing.

Dachstein Glacier - High Alpine Athmosphere in the Eastern Alps
2008-02-19 15:52:00 This is a quick review (from a too short afternoon visit) of Dachstein Glacier in Austria. It is also a story about backing up from an off-piste descent. Suisse Alps
2007-12-25 12:10:00 More and more photos!Yesterday we tracked down from Sankt Gallen to Maloja which is right near the border of Italy and its marvellous here, simply marvellous. Switzerland has charmed me over the last few days, the weather has been bright blue sunshine, its minus 5 outside and the snow covered mountains which constantly surround you leave you in absolute awe, I could spend all day here just looking at the peaks from the window in front of me.We stayed in a small hostel here last night which was filled with German families and it was so cute when the kids got their presents last night, it was lovely to see. we have been doing some stunning drives around the alps, the Fiat Bravo is perfect for the territory, the top of 3rd gear has power up the wazoo and makes the hills a lot of fun. Theres also good times to be had just cruising and enjoying the views, these mountains have a way of putting your mind together, helping you keep it all in perspective.Of course there is video! Visit French Alps
2007-10-12 22:37:00 From my own experience I know that it is a lot cheaper to rent an apartment directly from the owner in some nice holiday resort and then travel by plane to a chosen location rather than purchasing a trip that includes everything. Doing everything separately gives you also more freedom while making right choice when it comes to your accommodation, types of meals and flight details.Whenever you fly by plane to your chosen destination you will need a transfer from the airport to a place where you are going to stay. If you have ever thought about French Alps, this is when this airport transfer to your final destination might help you. The whole procedure is very easy. You create an account and a request for transfer that will include your resort, name of the place where you are going to stay, airport information, total number of passengers etc. After ompleting this stage and sending your request you are going to receive directly to your inbox offers from the most competitive operators. ...

new Nine Black Alps and another Princess Diana tribute of sorts and Jackson
2007-09-04 11:18:00 The second single from the second Nine Black Alps album is Bitter End and it's a good one.But their best and poppiest track to date is the third single, Future Wife. It reminds me of when I was first listening to Radio 1 and Mark Goodier was presenting the Evening Session. Which specific band I'm not sure - maybe The Candyskins.Future Wife - Nine Black Alps (album is released on October 22 so not on iTunes yet)There are excerpts from five new Alps album tracks hereThere are four Candyskins tracks here including Wembley (the one I first heard on the Evening Session) and Car Crash, the track that I believe should have broken them after Monday Morning scraped into the top 40. But the label procrastinated and then Princess Diana died in a car crash, making it rather difficult for UK radio to play a song called Car Crash.Wembley - The Candyskins (iTunes)Car Crash - The Candyskins (iTunes)I think Car Crash was probably inspired by Song For Adam from the first Jackson Browne album. As the Alps warm, ice melts and mountains crumble
2007-08-28 07:24:00 As temperatures around the globe rise, the world’s mountains are changing. Although the summit looms above, few people head up the west face to the top of the Eiger anymore. There ...
B-Sides: Nine Black Alps
2007-08-24 19:45:00 Last year, before releasing "Everything Is", the Nine Black Alps put out a self-titled EP that caught a lot of peoples attention. Most of the EP later showed up on "Everything Is", the only modification being that "Cosmopolitan" was re-recorded in a different key. However, "Attraction", both the second best song on the EP (the original "Cosmopolitan" being the best) and the song introduced me to the band, was left off the album. It's as good as anything else on the album, but was probably held back because the tone was so different from everything else on the LP. In case you missed the EP, here's "Attraction" on iMeem:
