Alternative Fuel Vehicles And Biodiesel
2008-05-29 07:00:00
If it’s a diesel, it’s an alt fuel vehicle by default. Biodiesel blends can be used in any diesel engine; however, it’s important to use the blends in accordance with the manufacturers specs. With more and more clean diesels coming on line, keep your eyes peeled for those ULSD pumps too. With fueling stations in ...
Brown is the new green: UPS buys 500 alternative fuel vehicles

Brown is the new green: UPS buys 500 alternative fuel vehicles With hybrid vehicles making the most sense for city driving, we've often wondered why automakers don't produce hybrid versions of their cargo vans, which are widely used for city deliveries. The gas-saving potential is enormous, and at least one company has seen the light. UPS has announced that it has purchased 500 alternative-fuel vehicles. 200 of those vehicles will be diesel-electric hybrids while the remaining 300 will run on compressed natural gas. According to UPS, the switch to alternative fuel vehicles will save 176,000 gallons of fuel per year, which is roughly the equivalent to taking 100 UPS trucks off the road. Moreover, the trucks powered by compressed natural gas will reduce truck emissions by 20 percent. UPS has also adopted a 'no left turn rule', which prevents trucks from just idling while waiting to make a turn — thereby reducing emissions. While the new trucks have gree...
Alternative Fuel Vehicles: Go Green
2008-05-03 11:52:00
It is very important that scientists begin work on more efficient automobiles that take advantage of alternative fuels because most of the resources on the planet are of a limited nature and fuel consumption remains as high as ever. Fuel prices are skyrocketing and if current trends continue then soon a day will arrive in which there is no more oil.

Auto Alliance: 1.8 million alternative fuel vehicles sold in 2007
2008-04-05 21:42:00
We last chatted with the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers at the New York Auto Show. We heard then about the Alliance's safety and eco-related stances. On Monday, the Alliance will announce that 1.8 million alternative-fueled autos (diesels, hybrids and flex-fuel) were sold in the U.S. in 2007, up just a bit - 250,000 - from 2006. Both hybrids and flex-fuel vehicle sales climbed while diesels dipped. The Alliance believes that more than 2m alternative vehicles will be sold in America in 2008. The hurdles to wider acceptance are the same as we've heard before: high cost of diesels and a lack of E85 fueling stations (to say nothing of hydrogen). Still, 1.8m vehicles is not insignificant. These aren't perfect green rides - I'm looking at you, Escalade hybrid - but in the uphill battle to green up America's fleet of vehicles, it's a start. You can download a PDF that lists all of the Alliance members' 70+ alternative fuel vehicles here. More details after the jump. Press Rele...

A380 makes test flight on alternative fuel
2008-02-02 12:53:00
Dan Lalor BRISTOL (Reuters) - An Airbus A380, the world's largest airliner, became the first commercial jet aircraft to use alternative fuel on Friday, marking a milestone on the road to biofuels. The double-decker A380 needed no modification to use the gas-to-liquid (GTL) fuel, which was designed to be mixed with regular jet fuel so "the aeroplane does not know the difference," Airbus said. Airbus hopes the plane, hit by production delays, will become the centrepiece of efforts to develop the next generation of cleaner fuel at a time when the aviation industry is under pressure over the impact of emissions on the climate. Sebastien Remy, head of Airbus SAS's alternative fuel programme, said the GTL used on Friday was no cleaner in CO2 (carbon dioxide) terms than regular fuel but it had local air quality benefits because it produces no sulphur. He said the take-off showed Airbus was "preparing for (the) emergence of a wider slate of synthetic fuels". ...

Darryl Siry offers up some advice for alternative fuel investments
2007-11-24 20:51:00
Tesla Marketing VP Darryl Siry has penned an article for VentureBeat on the topic of investing in alternative fuel car manufacturers. Investing in this field is no simple matter. As anyone watching Tesla over the past year can see, it's tough to launch a car company even if you've got a decent amount of funding behind you. Small investors will have a tough time finding a place to put some money since many of the independent companies in the field aren't public. Those involved in the venture capital arena need to try and find companies that have some really innovative technology. Could the Future Hold Alternative Fuel Cruise Ships?
2007-11-21 05:26:00
It seems like today everyone knows someone who drives a hybrid car and talk of the next big thing is right around the corner for the automotive industry. So my question is whether or not an alternative fuel cruise ship would work? Cars get miles to the gallon but cruise ship fuel usage is in gallons per minute. Even when not in motion, the amount of fuel required to keep all the electricity flowing on board would give a hybrid car owner a heart attack. Again, back to my question, could it work? Would hydrogen be a possibility for a ship? Hydrogen production either uses water or creates water which is not a problem for a ship. But the logistics and safety makes that a difficult sell. The ships are already hybrids so to speak with the diesel electric generators on board dedicated to making sure you can run the hair dryers and watch TV in your state rooms. The next thing to question is bio diesel. With the amount of food that is prepared on a cruise ship, this has got to be t...

Alternative Fuel

The rapid growth of technological development and technical innovations attract more and more people to use vehicles. Nowadays vehicles are necessity rather than luxury. Therefore pollution due vehicle fuels has become one of the severest problems in big cities. Several alternative fuels have been developed for recent years. Fuel cells are complicated appliances that generate electricity using hydrogen gas. This technology increases the efficiency of energy and uses less fuel, thus better economy, and produces fewer emissions thus cutting down on the production of pollutants like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. The economic feasibility of this type of vehicles is obscured by the unavailability of free hydrogen and the difficulty in the storage and the distribution of the gas. Fuel cell powered vehicles are about twice as efficient as the internal combustion engines and thus are economically superior. These cars are environmentally friendly and run ...

Lawmakers want coal as an 'alternative fuel'; Subsidies sought from U.S. taxpayers BY: Edmund L. Andrews, International Herald Tribune 05/31/2007 Even as congressional leaders draft legislation to reduce greenhouse gases linked to global warming, a *powerful roster of Democrats and Republicans is pushing to subsidize coal as the king of alternative fuels.* Prodded by intense lobbying from the coal industry, coal-state lawmakers are proposing that U.S. *taxpayers guarantee billions of dollars in construction loans for coal-to-liquid production plants, guarantee minimum prices for the new fuel, and guarantee big purchases by the government for the next 25 years*. With both House and Senate Democrats hoping to pass energy independence bills by mid-July, coal-state lawmakers argue that coal-based fuels are more American than gasoline and potentially greener than ethanol. 'For so many, filthy coal is a dirty four-letter word,' said Representative Nick Rahall, Democrat of West Virgin...

Biodiesel? Ethanol? Hemp Seed Oil? Oh My—a Primer on Alternative Fuels
2007-03-27 17:04:00
Myth: You have to have a special converter or a special engine to run alternative fuels.Truth: If you have a regular engine, you can run 15% ethanol (E-15) right now, with no conversion. If you want to use 85% ethanol (E-85), you would need to have your engine converted or own a car that is a Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV).If you have a diesel (compression-ignition) engine, you can run biodiesel right now. That is, the biodiesel you can find sold in gas stations across the U.S., the fuel that has already been refined. (Biodiesel has had the glycerin removed and is therefore ready to pump.)What's the difference between ethanol and biodiesel?Ethanol is an alcohol rather than an oil, where the primary substance that comprises it is a grain, usually corn, sometimes wheat or barley. Ethanol can come from many sources, but in the U.S., right now, it's mostly corn.Biodiesel is an oil-based fuel where the primary substance that comprises it is soybeans. Like ethanol, biodiesel can be made fr...
