Hispanics and Alzheimers
2008-10-23 12:12:00 The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated October 24:Interesting article shows that, tragically enough, Hispanics seem to be developing Alzheimer's at an earlier age than Whites.Suggested factors were stress and low educational attainment. The low educational achievement is quite clear, since US Hispanic culture, while not made up of morons, places nearly zero value whatsoever on education.I don't buy the stress thing though. I live in a mostly-Hispanic city, and these people do not worry about much of anything at all. They are some of the least neurotic people I have ever met. The whole philosophy is, "So what, take it easy, be apathetic, don?t worry about it, don?t think about it, take it one day at a time."Hispanics seem to live very much in the present moment. Most of the time, they seem to be thinking about their immediate environment and reacting to it. I?m not sure th...

HRT ‘might ward off Alzheimers
2008-04-02 02:05:00 Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may protect post-menopausal women against memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. A study found women’s memories are affected when their bodies stop producing the hormone oestrogen - as happens at the menopause. However, London’s Institute of Psychiatry found memory recovered when hormone supplies were restored – the effect achieved by HRT. Women have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s than men. It is estimated that around 450,000 women in the UK have the disease. There is a theory that oestrogen may help prevent the build up of damaging protein tangles in the brain which are thought to trigger cell death, and Alzheimer’s. But when supplies of the hormone are abruptly cut at the menopause, women may become more vulnerable. A major US study found no evidence of a protective effect from HRT – and even suggested the combined form of the treatment might increase the general risk of dementia. However, UK experts argue that this study focu...

Real News, Sad News: Terry Pratchett's Alzheimers Speech, March 2008
2008-03-21 05:04:00 I just heard the news that Terry Pratchett has Alzheimer's. This isn't new news, but news gets to me at the speed of sunlight on the Discworld, which, as you may know, travels very slow because of the large magical field of the Disc. I tend to try and not be sad and somber too much on The Space Turtle since it is meant to be a break from reality, but I felt like I had too mention this since this whole blog was in part inspired by Terry Pratchett who I hope doesn't decide to have a wizard cast a strange spell or send me to the Dungeon Dimensions for sorta kinda borrowing a space turtle from him. This one is a lot smaller and can't carry a world, just a man, as you may know if you read the stories that inspired the name of this blog. I wasn't too familiar with Terry Pratchett until more recently when I played first Discworld: Noir, then have played the first Discworld game, but not to completion, and and seen The Hogfather movie, and more recently have begun actually experiencin...

His latest film, Malcolm & Barbara: Love’s farewell, is an altogether more sober affair about a marriage ending as husband Malcolm dies of complications arising from Alzheimers.ITV will air it on August 8th, and (according to the Telegraph) their publicity claimed the documentary “ends when Barbara calls Paul to ask him to come as Malcolm is about to die ... In moving scenes, Malcolm is surrounded by his family and Barbara strokes his head as he passes away.”The Guardian takes up the story: After the press screening on July 18, journalists were left with the impression that the scene ended with the filming of his moment of death, as the shot froze on Mr Pointon’s still face. However, it is now understood that this footage of Mr Pointon slipping into a coma, with the rest of his grieving family around his bedside, was filmed two and a...

Cats an Alzheimers Disease
2007-06-20 15:13:00 Ageing cats can develop a feline form of Alzheimer's disease, a new study reveals. Researchers at the Universities of Edinburgh, St Andrews, Bristol and California have identified a key protein which can build up in the nerve cells of a cat's brain and cause mental deterioration. In humans with Alzheimer's disease, this protein creates ?tangles? inside the nerve cells which inhibit messages being processed by the brain. The team says that the presence of this protein in cats is proof that they too can develop this type of disease. By carrying out post-mortem examination of cats which have succumbed naturally to the disease, scientists may now be able to uncover vital clues about how the condition develops. This may eventually help scientists to come up with possible treatments. Researchers already thought cats were susceptible to dementia because previous studies had identified thick, gritty plaques on the outside of elderly cats' brain cells which are similar to those found...
