"The Amazing Race 13" kept in Sunday slot for fall 2008
2008-05-14 15:31:00 "The Amazing Race 13" has been officially set to air this fall 2008 in its usual Sunday 8 p.m. ET/PT timeslot. After learning from last year's "Viva Laughlin" fiasco, CBS officially slotted TAR without further delay for a regular fall debut. As usual, the program will be subject to delays resulting from extended National Football League overruns. In large measure because of the football overruns, "The Amazing Race" has found a comfortable home in the Sunday 8 p.m. slot. The past two editions of TAR that have benefited from football overruns (TAR10 & TAR12) have each scored more than acceptable ratings. The other CBS Sunday slots will be unchanged with one exception. "60 Minutes" will remain at 7 p.m. as TAR's lead-in, fellow Jerry Bruckheimer-program "Cold Case" returns to be TAR's lead-out at 9 p.m. The exception was legal drama "Shark", cancelled and replaced in the 10 p.m. ET time slot by veteran military-based drama "The Unit." ----Relevant link: CBS Press Express

The renewal guarantees at least two more TAR runs including the one now wrapping up production, both likely to air during the 2008-2009 television season. The ordering of TAR14 now means that "The Amazing Race 13" will likely not be delayed to midseason as speculated elsewhere but should instead air on time during fall 2008. "The Amazing Race 14" should then follow in quick order for airing in winter/spring 2009.Casting for "The Amazing Race 14" had already started several weeks ago on CBS.com in anticipation of the expected extra run of the program but the official confirmation of run #14 only came down today. After an airline flight gone wrong knocked daters TK and Rachel down to last place in Japan, they will need to make up a three hour deficit and overcome the waiting extra "speed bump" task on this penultimate leg to make the cut of the final three teams.The top three teams from last weekend's ninth leg can make the final cut just by maintaining the same race positions. While father/daughter team Ronald & Christina and grandson/grandfather team Nicolas and Donald would likely be satisfied just in making the final cut, daters Nathan and Jennifer also are striving for what would be their first leg win of the race. For the third episode in a row, a football overrun made getting even a precise preliminary estimate for the full hour an impossibility. In the 9 p.m. half-hour though, "Amazing Race" was estimated with a 3.4 demo rating in the 18-49 age group and 11.5 million overall viewers. Both measures were well above readings for the previous two episodes, both negatively impacted by holiday viewing disruptions and rerun lead-ins. The ABC affiliate sent drivers out to a given destination during evening rush using different routes to determine which route was the fastest.It amazes me (no pun intended) that a local TV station airing in direct opposition to TAR's own CBS network could borrow from "The Amazing Race" for its own purposes.

The reported renewal news came in the last paragraph of an article about the effects of the ongoing writers' strike. What's strange about the USA Today reference to a TAR renewal is that hours later, I can't find any collaborating accounts from either major trade publication (Variety, The Hollywood Reporter) or from CBS itself to verify it. Even without the USA Today report, the combination of the impressive audience level for TAR12's debut with the likelihood of a long writers' strike have made a TAR13 run much more likely than not. It's just the official word that seems in doubt for the moment.

2007-11-06 00:01:00 I'm so happy The Amazing Race is back. That show is a rocking good time, even when the premiere episode is only an hour instead of 90 minutes or two hours. A single hour really isn't enough time for me to figure out who I like this season, but it certainly is enough for me to figure out who I hate (and, let's be honest, that's far more important in the reality genre). And, who did I hate the most last night? Oh, that's easy, Ari and Staella. Staella was acceptable as a contestant and human being, but if Ari is as remotely shrill and obnoxious in real life as he appeared last night on the show, I can't imagine how he and Staella are friends (or, really, how he's friends with anyone). I had absolutely no problem with them stealing the taxi, all's fair in love and money, it really was the man's voice that killed me.
