An Angel Directs the Storm: Apocalyptic Religion and American Empire

An Angel Directs the Storm: Apocalyptic Religion and American Empire# Author: Michael Northcott# Format:PDF 1.5MB# Page Count:214# Publisher: I. B. Tauris (2004)# Language: English# ISBN-10: 1850434786# ISBN-13: 9781850434788This passionately argued book provides the first in-depth investigation of the religious politics of current American neo-conservatism. It shows that behind the neo-imperialism of the White House and George W. Bush lies an apocalyptic vision of the United States's sacred destiny "at the end of history", a vision that is shared by millions of Americans. The authors trace the roots of American apocalyptic to Puritan Millennialism and contemporary fundamentalist readings of the Book of Revelation. They suggest that Americans urgently need to recover a critique of Empire of the kind espoused by the founder of Christianity--or else risk becoming idolaters of a new Holy Roman Empire that leads others into servitude.
The Future of American Power

How America Can Survive the Rise of the Rest Despite some eerie parallels between the position of the United States today and that of the British Empire a century ago, there are key differences. Britain’s decline was driven by bad economics. The United States, in contrast, has the strength and dynamism to continue shaping the world ...

Empire or Humanity? What the classroom didn't teach me about the American empire By Howard Zinn With an occupying army waging war in Iraq and Afghanistan, with military bases and corporate bullying in every part of the world, there is hardly a question any more of the existence of an American Empire. Indeed, the once fervent denials have turned into a boastful, unashamed embrace of the

Thank you George Bush, for squandering America's political and economic capital, and it's bright future, on a useless war in Iraq, a war that will haunt us for many years to come. IPSNEWS.net What a difference five years and an invasion and bungled occupation of Iraq make! References to the Roman Empire at this point are more likely to refer to its decline than to its power -- an observation confirmed even by Donald Kagan, a dean of neo-conservatism and Kennedy?s colleague at Yale, whose sons, Robert and Frederick, have been champions of the Bush Doctrine and the Iraq War. "I?ve argued that not since the Roman Empire has anyone had such extraordinary power as the United States after the Cold War," Kagan told Kitfield. "But all of the elements of our strength are now being challenged, and it?s perfectly possible that we are seeing a relative decline in U.S. power that will prove lasting." Indeed, that possibility has been transformed into a probability, if not a certainty, by a...
America's War Against Democracy: A Story Whose Time Is Long Overdue
2007-11-13 17:06:00
The War On Democracy is the 58th (or so) documentary made by filmmaker John Pilger, and is his first feature length made for cinematic release. Piltger has been a TV director/producer since 1958, and has built a reputation and following for his investigative journalism into some of the world?s most difficult human problems. The War On Democracy is a history lesson tied to the present by Pilger?s bounding interest in the political potential of poor communities to transform national politics. His geographic scope in this film is the so-called ?backyard? of the United States: Latin America. And this shy bit of Orientalism (in calling a continent with 20 or so counties, more than half a billion people, a combined GDP of 2 trillion, and hundreds if not thousands of cultures far older than the American Republic a ?backyard?) goes to the heart of this compelling indictment of American foreign policy. America has been at war against democracy in the region seemingly since America bega...

2007-10-06 02:27:00
by Jim Miles Based solely on the title, this book appeared to be something that could have some strong revelations on the nature of the American Empire and its relationship with religion. Having read several books from the religious right, including the first volume of the “Left Behind” series (summed up as a compilation of Star Wars, Harlequin Romance, and end of times theology), I thought this volume might have a more rational approach than the fear mongering and devilish rhetoric that saturates the right wing material. Surprisingly, The American Empire and the Commonwealth of God is quite full of what for many are very common sense observations concerning the nature of the empire. It is not until three-quarters of the way through the volume that religious issues are addressed, and it is definitely not supportive of the evangelical end of times demonizing rants against the evil arising in Iraq and Iran. The four authors (three of whom are professors of theology)...
The Theology of American Empire

Foreign policy and the globalization of original sinIra Chemus, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Colorado (Boulder) has a fascinating essay entitled "The Theology of American Empire" posted at Foreign Policy in Focus. He argues that our current administration's foreign policy blunders stem from a deeply flawed sense of moral righteousness based on the views of theologian Reinhold Niebuhr:American foreign policy is built on a deep foundation of Christian theology. Drawing from the teachings of Reinhold Niebuhr, which applied the notion of original sin to the conduct of foreign relations, neoconservative thinkers believe that organized religion is the most effective institution in promoting moral absolutes and self-control and staving off a rising tide of moral relativism that is breaking down the bulwarks of social order.Inspired by this neoconservative philosophy, the Bush administration ranks the world's nations according to a moral hierarchy with irrational, ...
The State of the American Empire – How the USA Shapes the World – Jim Miles

by Jim Miles On first perusal my perceptions told me this was my kind of book: lots of graphs, charts, and maps for my visual learning strengths, more akin to the National Geographic where I can glean most of the significant information from the photos and captions as much as I can from the text. But then as I delved into the text that introduces and accompanies the visuals, I realized that this was a bit more than just an atlas – it also made political statements through choice of words and topics. The State of the American Empire: How the USA Shapes the World by Stephen Burman Unfortunately, that position wavered in front of me, at one time apparently saying this, at another time apparently saying that. The State of the American Empire has a slippery and elusive perspective, but one that finally settles down into a relatively clear theme, perhaps the slippery metaphor being appropriate for American ‘idealism’ as it stands today. Ultimately, the und...

“Liberal Democracy is moving toward a form of corporate dictatorship. This is an historic shift, and the media must not be allowed to be its façade, but itself made into a popular, burning issue, and subjected to direct action,” said John Pilger. “That great whistleblower Tom Paine warned that if the majority of the people ...

And Germany and the others are just as bad, too. Today, we spend the hour with a man who claims to have worked deep inside the forces driving corporate globalization. In his first book, ?Confessions of an Economic Hit Man?, John Perkins told the story of his work as a highly paid consultant hired to strong-arm leaders into creating policy favorable to the U.S. government and corporations -- what he calls the ?corporatocracy.? John Perkins has just come out with a new book. It's called ?The Secret History of the American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals, and the Truth about Global Corruption.?

U.S. military expert Chalmers Johnson argues the catastrophe in Iraq and the staggering cost of running a military that stretches across 130 countries on 737 bases may finally cost America its empire. 9/11 and American Empire: Intellectuals Speak Out

by Carolyn Baker1/23/07originally published at Speaking Truth to Power"Surely there can be no higher duty for academics and other intellectuals at this time than to expose the big lie of 9/11, thereby undermining the primary pretext for the global domination project," says Morgan Reynolds, Professor Emeritus of Economics, Texas A& M University (P. 115 of 9/11 And American Empire) . Professors David Ray Griffin and Peter Dale Scott have edited a masterpiece of critical thinking and scholarly analysis in this collection of articles by intellectuals who have broken silence on the atrocities of September 11, 2001. I have revered Peter Dale Scott for many years, having used his books and articles in my college history classes. This wise elder, professor emeritus of English, is one of few in academia who have addressed the United States government?s half-century role in drug trafficking and money laundering, and he has offered us the concept of deep politics, which ?p...

"...Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. The jaws of power are always open to devour, and her arm is always stretched out, if possible, to destroy the freedom of thinking, speaking, and writing. Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the People, who have? a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge, I mean the characters and conduct of their rulers. There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free ?government? ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty. Liberty cannot be preserved without general knowledge among people."Part [1] [2] [3] [4][5][6]I drove straight to Salt Lake City and stood on the corner next to the federal office building alongside the sparse few protestors "mourning" about the "re-election" of Bush/Cheney the evening after Gen...
American Empire of Debt - The Great Bust Ahead
2006-12-02 15:42:02
The Great Bust AheadThe Greatest Depression in American History is just several shortyears away. It will be much worse than the 1930s, beginning perhaps as earlyas 2009-2010,and last up to thirteen years. On the HorizonIn the next few months, a financial crisis will arise somewhere in the worldwhich will jolt the American economy and trigger a swift and precipitousdecline in the value of the dollar. This is not speculation; it will happen andthere is nothing that the Bush administration can do to stop it.All of the traditional supports for the dollar have been removed by a shrinking economy, a massive $800 billion account deficit, dramatic increases in the money supply, and the reckless manipulation of interest rates. Now, the noose is tightening. Our foreign trading partners can see that we are bobbing in an ocean of red ink and are refusing to buy back our debt in the form of US Treasuries. This is a death sentence for the dollar. It means that in a matter of months the once-mighty ...
