With Ridley Scott at the helm and Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe on screen together for the first time in a dozen years, the film was sure to receive decent box office returns. The film is really two separate stories, one with Washington and one with Crowe; the two actors do not even share a scene together until the final minutes. Normalmente, es lo que suele ocurrir cuando se juntan un director de gran calibre, como es Ridley Scott, con actores reconocidos de la talla de Denzel Washington y (su fetiche) Russel Crowe.La película se sitúa en los años 70, en plena guerra de Vietnam, y trata sobre Frank Lucas, un hombre negro que trabaja cómo chófer de una especie de mafioso de Harlem (el barrio negro por excelencia de Nueva York). Tras la muerte de éste, Frank opta por no quedarse de brazos cruzados y aprovecha el gran auge de la heroína para llevar a cabo una idea: eliminar intermediarios y traer la heroína directamente desde Vietnam. Aprovechando la guerra, y que su primo es militar y se encuentra en el país asiático, utiliza al ejército americano para introducir la droga en Estados Unidos.
