My name is ? When public art, biography and history collide
2009-09-12 15:43:00
Spinoza, for those who missed this 17th century Dutch philosopher?s moment of celebrity, is one of the guys who helped put God ? the idea of god ? into its rightful abstract place. For Spinoza, nature was absolute and his political philosophy spiraled out from this essential truth. He was one of the ...

"Swallow" Poetry Chapbook by Jendi Reiter Now Available from Amsterdam Pres
2009-09-02 23:14:00
My poetry chapbook Swallow won the 2008 Flip Kelly Poetry Prize from Amsterdam Press and is now available for purchase online. Thanks are due to my awesome editor, Cindy Kelly; poet Ellen LaFleche, who helped me organize the collection and suggested the title; and my prison pen pal "Conway" who drew the amazing cover art. "Jendi Reiter's poems are arrows that plunge dead center into the hearts of feminism, religion, death, the interior of mental health and psychotherapy. Her humor and satire here are as sharply honed as are her indignation. All are delivered in highly imaginative and metaphoric imagery. This is an intelligent and powerful read that will leave issues bleeding in the minds of readers for a while before they heal." ?Ellaraine Lockie, award-winning poet, nonfiction author, educator "There's plenty of poetry I wouldn't give a fig for, but I'd give strawberries for the poems in Jendi Reiter's SWALLOW. When I started in Poetry in 1962, I felt poems were only p...

Update from Amsterdam - Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands
2009-04-04 15:24:00
Jump to the full entry & travel map Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, NetherlandsHi Everyone!I feel like I have been traveling for so long already. I made it safely and easily to Abby's flat in Islington, London on Thursday night, and the next day we romped around London. First to Abby's favorite area, Portobello Market - kind of like a daily large flea market on a small street - they had everything there including a lot of vintage trinkets and clothes. We bought a bread pudding-cake thing from a street vendor, and made our way to Regents Park. The sun came out and we walked around the immaculate gardens, spring flowers and their smells were everywhere. We rested on a park bench in the sun and we both got a little tan - in London, who would have thought! We were a little nervous about our travel to Amsterdam, so we went back to her flat and got ready and packed and left early for our trip. We had to take the tube to Liverpool station, then a train to Harwich, which is righ...

Amsterdam City Park: Vondelpark
2008-06-08 03:22:00
Vondelpark: Famous City Park in Amsterdam     Amsterdam’s largest city park lies a few blocks away from the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmeseum. Vondel Park attracts thousands of tourists everyday. It welcomes around 10 million visitors every year. It is a central point to the city of Amsterdam. Here you can find people jogging, dog-walking, listening to music, roller skating or lazing around in grass. Open air theatre and free concerts at the park's bandstand are some of the attractions at Vondel Park. Another attraction at the park is the statue of Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679). Vondel was a Dutch writer and playwright. His parents were from Antwerpian descent.  In 1595 they fled to tolerant Amsterdam in the newly formed Dutch Republic. Vondel married a Catholic lady Mayken de Wolff and he chose to convert to Catholicism. Those days de facto state religion in the Dutch republic was Calvinist Protestanism. His love for a Catholi...

Free Amsterdam: Gardens, art, ferries, conversation
2008-05-05 17:34:00
Looking for ways to save some euros while visiting Amsterdam? Here are five suggestions: Try some flower power. Visiting the masterpieces at the Rijksmuseum will set you back €10, but the baroque and renaissance gardens behind it are free to stroll. Delight in the fountains, statues, and the carefully coiffed hedges and plants. The gardens are open daily from 9 am to 6 pm. Baroque gardens are closed on the weekends. (Note: The Rijksmuseum is undergoing extensive renovations that are scheduled to last until 2010. Until then, visitors may visit a scaled down “best of” collection entitled ”Th-e Masterpieces.”) Pick up a passport to paintings.  Speaking of the Rijksmuseum, we’re flying high about the joint venture between the museum and Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schipol, an art space at the airport maintained by the museum, offers annual exhibits free of charge. This year, an impressive collection of Van ...

Friday flip-through: Amsterdam books, wine dating in Paris, Eurovision
2008-04-25 17:58:00
Sebastien Tellier is representing France in Eurovision this year. It’s sunny again today! Here are some of the things we’ve taken a shine to this week: On Wednesday, Amsterdam became the World Book Capital for one whole year! Thanks to Trippist for reading up on this, and getting us excited about the city-wide book fair scheduled for May 18th! Meanwhile in Paris, Heather Stimmler-Hall recounts in her “Secrets of Paris” blog her tale of wine dating on the 56th floor of the Tour Montparnasse. What is “wine dating,” you ask? It involves tasting three types of wine, mingling with available Frenchmen, cold cuts, and a towering view. Sign us up. And then there’s the flight news! Less Than a Shoestring got us all knotted up about UK and Irish airports charging surprise, unavoidable airport taxes. And from a vending machine, no less! Meanwhile, BudgetTravel alerts us to Cheapo-friendly fares in May from NYC to Rome, Naples, and other Italian cit...

New Amsterdam Bows: Lessons in Cons and Backsides
2008-04-15 04:18:00
New Amsterdam gave its final bow tonight - of the season, maybe of all time - with a line that it is destined to become classic, when John says to his annoying boss Callie (played by Susan Misner) "I won't kiss your ass - which isn't that great, by the way. The way you twitch it around, you'd think it was one of the seven wonders of the modern world."Well, it's looked ok to me, and Callie also gets creds for asking John at the end of the episode if he really meant this line, part of the little act the detectives put on to nab the bad guy (actually, a bad woman). We don't get to see John's answer, but we did get a fine final episode, in which the current police and the past part of John in historical New York are finally meshing pretty well. Con artists are the common thread, in the 1920s and the 2008 parts, and of course conning most of the people around him is just what John has been doing his whole 400-year life. Not to stretch this metaphor too far, but tantalizing the tel...

New Amsterdam 7: What Kept John from Dying?
2008-04-10 06:05:00
Next to last New Amsterdam on Monday - at least, for this season, and no one is saying at this point if it there will be another. This hour moved the story forward on one crucial point:Apparently Dr. Sara is not the one for John. He's shot (again) at point blank range, comes close to dying, but survives. The implication is the attack would have killed a mortal man. Were Sara the one, and this reduced John to mortality, as per the original prophecy, he should have died.Reasons for John surviving, if Sara indeed was the one, and John was mortal, could only be if the damage done to him by the gun was not that serious. That would be a rather weak move for the story, so I'm assuming that's not the case.Another possibility - especially given the other main story in Episode 7 - is that John may be slowly dying from the lead in his body. This is what happened to John's prior partner. He was shot, survived, but eventually died of long-range complications. But I'm betting that wha...

New Amsterdam 6: The DNA of Art
2008-04-01 05:35:00
Tonight's New Amsterdam - Episode 6 - started out great: John is called in on a case, and finds the victim looking just like his son - John's son from 1913, in his late teens. Now, we know that time travel is not one of the ingredients of this series, so the deceased could not be John's son who literally traveled from then to now.One possibility might have been that John's son somehow inherited part or all of John's immortality - and lived, not aging a day, from 1913 until now, only to die riddled by bullets. Perhaps John's son had found his true love, the one who would set him free from his immortality.Instead, the story took a more tame but still intriguing turn: this was a descendant of John's son who just happened to look like John's son. So we get get a nice episode tonight about another one of the many branches of John's family tree.Along the way, we get some good thoughts about the immortality of art - John's a painter in 1913 - and some fine scenes in which John...

It seems that today we are going to have good weather; this photo has been already taken from the Mövenpck Hotel. 2 days ago it was snowing, but the temperature has risen and it seems that we are going to have a sunny day:Yesterday I gave a speech in the Black Hats Seminar, in the session "Black Hats Sessions Part VI: Hacking for profit". More than 100 people were present in the speech I gave about the cybercrime. Throughout today and tomorrow the BlackHat Europe 2008 briefings, which have nothing to do with the Black Hats Seminars, are going to take place. The schedule can be consulted here. I hope to come across interesting information.
