Top performing stock markets in 2007.
2008-02-06 19:36:00 Let's have a look at leading stock market indexes in 2007. Two hot emerging markets are missing among top 10. Commodities driven Lima Stock Exchange index IGBVL in Peru and Viet Nam Stock Exchange VN index. Especially Vietnamese index had nice bull run in 2006 since Vietnam entered World Trade Organization.Winner for 2007 is China CSI 300 even thought early on spring 2007 there was global sell of triggered just by China. About Ukraine I wrote in previous post. Index is mainly composed of large caps compared to others indices in emerging markets. Main topics for Slovenian market were Euro adoption and government pension funds fuelling equity market. In Bangladesh investors were attracted by government pledge to sell state enterprises.China CSI 300 index 179.75%Ukranian PFTS index 135.41%Slovenia total market 96.90%Nigeria stock exchange 87.17%Bangladesh DHAKA stock 86.19%Croatia Zagreb crobex 80.84%Brazil Bovespa stock index 72.44%Istanbul ISE national 100 index 71.91%African Maurit...

2008-01-27 17:22:00 Last week magazine Motor Authority discovered first pictures of new Skoda Superb. The car is expected to be available on sale in summer 2008. Production start is planned for March 2008. Factory will still produce both models as there is still strong demand for first version of Superb. Czech car producer Skoda Auto is also one of potential IPO on Prague Stock Exchange for year 2008. Company is part of Volkswagen holding (VLKAY). http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml

Hedging strategy for weak USD.
2008-01-19 22:59:00 Last week General Electric (GE) released good results which met expectations. Infrastructure business unit grew its profit by 26% in forth quarter. This segment makes up 40% of GE total earnings.More than 50 percent of GE revenues now coming from outside the U.S.Still strong global demand and weak USD are major factors which are helping US companies with international focus. The question is if this is already reflected in stock prices. But investment to exporters and multinationals is still smart play.Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) is getting amazing 70% of revenues from abroad. Also among mid size cap we can find companies with international exposure more that 50%. For example NCR (NCR) which with revenue rise 12% in last quarter. As they announced one quarter came from favourable USD depreciation. Company is leader in automatic teller machines and this unit contributed by 17% mainly due to strong demand coming from Asia and Europe.Another interesting mid size caps with foreign revenues mor...
US markets extend losses.
2008-01-17 18:41:00 Not even today's Bernanke's and Bush's call for stimulus package are helping markets stop losses. Broad indices are approaching bottoms created on March 2007 after China sell-off. Technical chart shows us that Nasdaq Composite is really close to that bottom which is on 2331 points. Negative sentiment is fuelled after Merrill Lynch (MER) revealed write down by almost 10 billion USD. Only during last year shares lost 42%. Let's see FED action during next meeting which takes place on 30. January or maybe earlier if there is emergency meeting. My expectation is 50 bp cut.Lately we are hearing many statistics which are beaten. Let me add that now it is forth consecutive week when markets are in red. Last time it happened on April 2005 but drop was much lower.http://stockweb.blogspot.-com/atom.xml
US stocks back in green.
2008-01-09 21:04:00 Today we can see session again with high volatility. In contrast to previous days today it looks more in favour of bulls. If you look at the chart Nasdaq bottomed with similar candlestick as on August. If this is really short-term bottom we will see in following days. I think important is awaited earnings kick off which coming to the street today. After closing bell Alcoa (AA) releases earnings result.Major broad US indices are significantly off their October's high. Dow Jones Industrial ($INDU) and S&P500 ($SPX) roughly 12% and Nasdaq ($COMP) is down 15%. http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml
Outlook for global stock markets.
2008-01-05 14:04:00 Welcome to year 2008. I just came back from my oversea holiday. Let me wish you successful year 2008.Year 2007 was quite nervous with high volatility especially at the end of the year. Credit market turmoils spread over. Also fear of US economy recession has pushed stocks lower. How to invest in coming year? I still like stocks but it's needed to be more selective than in last years as major stock markets indices will hardly beat past performances. During this month I'll publish some stocks which I will be adding to my portfolio. For 2008 I don't expect US economy goes to recession. Consumer spending remained positive on year-to-year basis for 2007. And as labour market remains strong US consumers will keep higher spending. Plus global growth and weak US dollar are stimulating export. If we look at to US stock markets. Shares are with the cheapest valuation in this decade (P/E ratio for S&P500 is 18). I expect beginning of 2008 with continuing volatility but I see optimistic s...

Growing Cental European Media.
2007-12-14 17:54:00 The only one Czech blue chip company which is also traded on US stock markets continues with definite bull trend. If you look at 6 years charts share price goes just sharply up.This year Central European Media (CETV) gained 40%. The second best performing company among Czech blue chip cap. Shares were rapidly rising especially at the beginning of the year, Ukrainian concession was over but situation was resolved promptly. Plus very good earnings results and introduction of new investor (APAX funds). Last but not least appreciation of Central and Eastern European currencies helps to get better consolidated earnings reports in USD. http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml
CPI grew sharply more than market expected.
2007-12-10 20:35:00 Consumer price index in Czech Republic increased by 5% in November. Market expected 4,5%. Mainly lifted by food inflation. For beginning of 2008 expectations are bit higher now (CPI 6%). Recently Czech National Bank - CNB- increased main interest rate benchmark to 3,5%. With last released CPI data we are again out of inflation targets followed by CNB. Inflation target is 3% with range +/- 1%. On the other side Czech currency Koruna is at strongest level against EUR, USD and therefore any other interest rate hike could hit dramatically Czech export. http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml
FED meeting - next rate cut?
2007-12-10 19:36:00 Tomorrow is next FOMC meeting and widely expected interest rate decision. Last couple of days shares have rebounded after sell off triggered by credit markets turmoil. Last FED meeting cut was not so optimistic as accompanying speech didn't predict further rates decrease. But since that many things have happened. Crude oil pull back from record high, credit market fear, weak housing market and consumer spending. If you look at the chart, Fed fund rate (4,5%) is tightly "catching on" long term US bond, 10 year treasury note (^TNX). Latest market price is 4,15%. My personal expectation is that FED will cut by 25 basis points. http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml

CEE emerging markets.
2007-12-02 11:38:00 Outlook for Central and Eastern European countries remains positive. Europe is still Nr.1 for US export. In terms of corporate taxes in New Europe it is about 20% vs. 38% in Western Europe (Germany, France, Italy etc.). Also currency appreciation is helping to lift your CEE investments higher. Local currencies are the strongest against both, USD and EUR.Russia - With boosting economy (7% growth per year) is attracting many investors and is currently the biggest investment country in CEE region. Mainly energy, materials and telecommunications are shaping RTS index.Poland - By 2-3% exceeding average GDP growth in EU-15. This year economic growth 6,2% is expected.Hungary - New law protecting local companies against enemy takeover spreads negative feelings all over.Czech Republic - Till 2010 corporate taxes will be decreased from 24% to 19%. The leader is energy sector after announcement that energy prices will be up by 9% in year 2008. http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml
Spread trading with IT pair.
2007-11-28 19:21:00 There is one of the best examples for spread trading (or pair trading). It comes from IT stocks, Intel (INTC) and AMD. Basically this kind of trading is convenient if market is unpredictable. Stocks can go up, down or sideways. You are going long with your favourite one and going short with worse company. The whole idea is that your laggard will always drop more than your favourite and in the same meaning for bullish trend. If you would apply this trading system for mentioned stocks (long with INTC, short with AMD) you would have profit 70% for last year. At the chart, you can see that even recent sell off you would survive with as AMD drop was more significant than INTC. http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml

Traders are blogging about stocks.
2007-11-26 18:21:00 Two of my most respectable bloggers are having different view on current situation. Stock markets are after or maybe still in sell off. We are asking now is it right time to buy cheap stocks or exit long position as bear market is coming.Well, Optionpundit is mentioning on his blog about crossing bellow technical support for major US indices. Russell 2000 crossed below, Dow Jones Industrial Average only slightly bellow 12800 points. Optionpundit announced beginning of bear market last week.On the other side Denarii posted today quite bullish forecast. He is predicting multi week bounce.Me personally, I still believe in bull market. But watching closely support like 12800 points for DJIA. Deeper crossing could trigger psychological selling. You can find links for Denarii and Optionpundit blogs in my blogroll section. http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml
Bull vs. Bear.
2007-11-20 21:36:00 We started today trading session well up ahead FED meeting. Nevertheless NASDAQ Composite lost all gains (+1,5%) and in fact reverse its performance to -1,5%. But it is not the end of our volatile session as index is unchanged now. There are no hopes for lowering interest rates as record crude oil prices are pushing inflation. Market behaviour is highly dependent on DOW support at 12800 which was April's high plus August's low. I believe many traders are opening long position with protective stop losses. Also NASDAQ composite is touching support level (200 moving average). http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml
Are we going for rebound next week?
2007-11-17 10:50:00 Last two posts I've been mentioning investment specialty like inverse ETF and mutual funds. But it doesn't mean that I am turning to short investing. I am still bullish and recent sell-off have seen as a buying opportunity. First don't fight the FED. Technically speaking we have oversold RSI 14. Bollinger Put Volume Indicator eclipses August highs with 1.78 reading. Historically speaking, strong second half on November. And also end year rally ahead with January effect. http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml

Expensive Big Mac in Czech Republic.
2007-11-13 18:40:00 Based on Big Mac index McDonald's product is more expensive in Czech Republic than in USA. It happens first time in history. Major affect has weakening US$ and as well as strengthening Czech Koruna (CZK). Czech currency is gaining also against strong EURO. Against two major world currency we can see all time high.Nevertheless Czech salaries are far behind USA. McDonald's worker is getting 3 times more than Czech one.See below Big Mac prices in different countries (in US$).USA 3,41China 1,48Thailand 1,96Russia 2,12Japan 2,52Argentina 2,61Mexico 2,67Poland 2,78Australia 3,15South Korea 3,20Slovakia 3,25Czech Rep 3,45Hungary 3,47New Zealand 3,53Turkey 3,96Canada 4,13Great Britain 4,16Eurozone 4,49Sweden 5,22Denmark 5,46Switzerland 5,61Norway 7,52Island 7,81http://stockweb.blogspot.co-m/atom.xml

Do you hate or love Google?
2007-11-05 21:50:00 Today I was reading several blogs. And basically I'd divide blog sphere into trader's blog and blogs about "How to make money blogging". Money makers blogs are usually blaming Google for recent Google PageRank (PR) assignment. Based on using text ads links many bloggers were punished with lowering Google PR.On the other side if you are reading trader's blogs majority of them are celebrating successful trading with Google shares (GOOG). I found posts mentioning record earnings with Google options and similar stories like this. Also I still do have long position in Google shares which is one of the best performing for 2007. Today Google introduced mobile phone intention. This company is entering new segment of business. Once I saw Jim Cramer's Mad Money saying about Google: "Don't trust analyst or portfolio manager who is short with Google".http://stockweb.blogspo-t.com/atom.xml
Divx posting earnings after market close.
2007-11-05 21:21:00 What do you expect from Divx? Well, last two quarter results were disappointing. In Q3 company announced significant cooperation with Yahoo (YHOO) and Qualcomm (QCOM). Before both last disappointing quarters insiders were selling shares. Before this quarter Kevin Hell (company CEO) sold also shares for $13.5 - $13.79.http://stockweb.blogspot-.com/atom.xml
Is it right time to buy brokerages?
2007-11-05 20:09:00 Today again negative subprime news are coming to market. Citigroup (C) predicted high losses due to credit market together with CEO resignation are dragging market to red. I'd like to focused on group of investment brokerages. This segment was hit heavily due to subprime lenders issues. Current P/E valuation of US brokerages is 9.5. Goldman Sachs (GS) has 9, Morgan Stanley (MS) 6.5, Merrill Lynch (MER) 12.3, Lehman Brothers (LEH) 7.8.In my view Morgan Stanley stepped down the most from the record price and this company has still Q3 results announcement ahead. Of course P/E ratios don't tell us the shares are cheap now because all brokerages earnings are let's say disappointments and adjusting their P/E valuation. Do you think is it right time to buy brokerages? I still stay away and waiting..http://stockweb.blogsp-ot.com/atom.xml

Moody's rating for Czech Republic.
2007-10-29 15:35:00 Czech Republic has currently assigned the second best rating which is A1, with positive outlook. Ratings for other countries in region are A1 for Slovakia (with stable outlook), A2 for Hungary and Poland. To get highest rating Aaa country needs to implement reforms for public finance and public heath. Higher rating would help companies like CEZ which are issuing eurobonds.http://stockweb.blogs-pot.com/atom.xml
S&P500 has P/E ratio 18.
2007-10-27 13:17:00 The valuation of index S&P500 is currently 18. Just 5 years ago it was doubled. From this point of view the bull trend is healthy and supported by corporate earnings. Ongoing earnings results are beating analyst estimates. 170 companies beat, 40 matched and 70 missed street expectation. Together with highly possible US rate cut we will see nice end year stock rally. Now I am very bullish with tech sector but in future I'll switch to financial and banks again. Especially brokerages which are not really involved with subprime lenders issues but they've been hit by negative sentiment in financial industry.http://stockweb.blogsp-ot.com/atom.xml

Standard & Poors has improved rating for Czech Republic.
2007-10-03 09:18:00 Rating which is taking into consideration mainly foreign-exchange liabilities and ability to acquittance was improved from grade A- to A. Also rating about domestic liabilities went up from grade A to A+. Undoubtedly positive news are reflecting reform of public finance which will help deficit reduction. On the other side for better rating S&P agency is missing better outlook or even plan for EURO adoption. creditworthiness of Czech Republic is now at the same level like Slovakia, Lithuania, Estonia. Other CEE countries Hungary and Poland are with lower rating. In former times also currency (Czech Koruna) appreciation led for rating increase.http://stockweb.blogsp-ot.com/atom.xml

Russia - Safe investments in credit market turmoil.
2007-09-09 19:54:00 One of the stock markets which were unaffected by credit market turmoils is Russian. Russian shares benefited from many positive aspects. June GDP expansion 8.2% with overall Q2 growth 7.6%. This great number were fueled by a very strong investment increase (22.3%) and consumer spending. It is not surprising as real wages rose 17.5% and personal incomes 11.2%. Among major sectors expanding in first half are construction (24%), manufacturing (9.7%), retail (9.2%). Apart from rising domestic demand, Russian economy gained also from rising oil prices.http://stockweb.blogspot-.com/atom.xml Originally posted at: http://www.stockweb.blogspot.co-m/

2007-09-07 10:24:00 Czech economy continues with fast growth. In last quarter (Q2) grew 6% when expectations were 5.8%. The highest increase we see with household spending (6.5%). For CEZ investor it wouldn't be positive as share price will be highly dependent on MOL stocks. 2007-09-04 00:34:00 As promised: I’d get back on Crazy Egg's analysis of our China Business site. And – call me crazy – I couldn’t wait and ran a test this weekend. The results of which I’m happy to share. What makes our China Business site click? Have a look!My First conclusions (make sure to click for the large version of the jpg):Most visitors click in the top 10 or 20% of your page if it is as long as ours is. So it is love at first sight, or you are out.Big surprise to me was that almost nobody clicks on the pictures (they link just as well, but somehow most people prefer the text link). What is the expression? Mind over matter; function over form; something like that? Help me out here. Content is king? You tell me…People absolutely love to click on poll radio-buttons (bet your statistics program never found that out for you until now, right?).When provided for, visitors actually use the search function on your web site – also quite remarkable. I mean with Google toolbar in place to...
Yesterday trading in favour for Steel and Iron industry.
2007-08-25 11:01:00 Mittal Steel (NYSE: MT) which is traded also in Czech gained almost8% to USD 64.34 and Nucor Corp. (NYSE: NUE) closed 7% higher at USD55.11. This sector was sharply down during August. Both receivedanalyst upgrade from Merrill Lynch to buy. Target price for NUE isseen at USD 65. With growing demand and rising steel prices togetherwith low PE valuation (around 10) these companies or some steel fundor ETF I see as a good pick.http://stockweb.blogspot.c-om/atom.xml Originally posted at: http://www.stockweb.blogspot.co-m/
PE valuation history for major world indexes.
2007-08-16 11:37:00 From chart is visible that valuation of major world indices is healthy. Since 2001 is going down meaning that companies profits are growing faster than share prices.Well, nowadays we are facing subprime lenders issue with significant selling off especially in banking and financial sector. But still share of subprime mortgages is just about 10% of total mortgages amount in US and shouldn't any major impact on the whole economic picture of US respective world economies.http://stockweb.blogs-pot.com/atom.xml Originally posted at: http://www.stockweb.blogspot.co-m/
Banking sector prediction for Eastern Europe.

Chinese index CSI 300 beating all time high.
2007-08-16 07:06:00 At time when all major world indices are struggling, Chinese benchmark index CSI 300 gained 14%, YTD doubled its value. It hasn't been stopped by 10 years maximum CPI, 5.6%, and not even by interest rate hike. But fundamentally they're pretty expensive with PE valuation 50. Second position is held by Peru with valuation 44. Chinese stocks are becoming overheated. To compare, individual investors are participating on 60% of trades in China Stock Market when in US markets it's 5%.http://stockweb.blogspot.com-/atom.xml Originally posted at: http://www.stockweb.blogspot.co-m/

Subprime lender "crisis" with affect on European shares.
2007-08-13 07:56:00 ECB cash - 95 milliards EUR - intervention is a little bit contra productive and making stock markets more nervous. On the other side not even bonds are rising. This situation is the best for more defensive companies like pharmaceutical or high dividend stocks. And last week shows that those are the best picks.(more details at: www.stockweb.blogspot.com)In Czech Republic, the most dropping are shares of Erste Bank even though risky loans are only 2 mil. EUR. Komercni Banka is also loosing but could be seen as profit taking after rallies from last week. Come back to pharmaceutical stocks, Zentiva is unchanged this week, the same for German Bayer. Developers are going in different way, ORCO gaining, ECM loosing. Unipetrol is seen better after announcement that rafinery costs are expected smaller. Discounted Telefonic O2 with CZK 577 per share is attractive for buyers with coming dividend on September.Next week we see earnings results for CEZ and Unipetrol.http://stockweb.blogs-pot.com/... |
