Buffalo NY Friends Anarchy Nostalgia
2008-06-01 16:33:00 Buffalo NY Friends, Anarchy, and NostalgiaLast Friday, the 23rd of May, was my birthday. I went up to my old haunt of Buffalo, New York to visit an old friend who goes by the name of Smethan. For a good four year period at the beginning of this decade I would swing through Buffalo for a quick stay each summer in a dirty attic full of friends, music, and the youthful spirit of revolt. A collection of tales an memories were made with these friends, and now I still enjoy a good swing through Buffalo to talk of the old days when we were but black clad kids out looking for kicks, rejecting every vestige of our culture, while taking on the new dawn with the passion of antiquated anarchy. The loud portion of my early 20's youth was left there in that hopeless city.-------------Wade from Vagabond Journey.com in Upstate New York, USA- May 2008 Song of the Open Road -- Travel Photos --------------Buffalo is a rotting, sunless hole of nothingness, but the people there are good, and the city ha...
Homeschooling without credentials leads to educational anarchy
2008-05-31 16:38:00 It isn’t just that we’re “well meaning amateurs.” The National Education Association (well, at least the California Chapter) has real concerns about what homeschooling will do to the entire educational system. As reported by the Pacific Justice Institute, the organization representing Sunland Christian School: For instance, the California Teachers Association claims in its brief ...

Fashion vs. Style and Punk Rock vs. Anarchy
2008-05-05 07:32:00 It’s no secret that I discovered anarchy from the punk rock bands of the 1970s. Not only did I absorb the messages in their music but also the statements made by their fashions. Both were quickly adopted and studiously observed (although in as discreet a manner as possible). Thank to Sid Vicious ...

Freedom of Speech Versus Anarchy in Egyptian Society
2008-04-19 23:08:00 About two years ago, a group of concerned citizens in Egypt formed an organization called MARED, an acronym for "Masryoun [Egyptians] Against Religious Discrimination." The main goal of this group is to finally bring some sort of sanity to the current state of a deeply divided Egyptian society, a division rooted in religious discrimination and intolerance. This group (MARED) is made up of highly respected intellectual members of the Egyptian society, such as academicians, journalists, businesspeople, government officials, scientists, human rights activists, artists, philosophers, religious thinkers and many others. Most of them are Muslim, but the organization also includes Christians and representatives of other religious and secular groups in Egypt.A few months ago, MARED decided to make plans for holding its first congress, aimed at discussing the roots of and solutions for the crisis of religious divide and discrimination in the Egyptian society. The congress carried the slogan "...

Applied Anarchy: Why Taxes Are Theft
2008-04-14 06:52:00 Part of the Applied Anarchy 2008 Series - Previous in series It was recently brought to my attention that though I frequently refer to taxes being “stolen money” and being collected “at the point of a gun” I’ve never really explained that reality. My assumption was that this was as self-evident to others as it has always been to myself, but apparently it’s not so self-evident after all. So here you go… If I approach you on the street and demand money from you would you give it to me? What if I threatened you with a gun? Would it be right for me to insist you give me the money from your wallet? What if I only wanted one third of the money in your wallet? What if I promised you protection and other services in return for the money? Would you consider this theft? I imagine you would. Mugging, robbery, extortion. And you would be right in that assessment. What if I stopped you on the street and had 1...

Divinely Guided Anarchy - By La Fellow Strangiato
2008-04-09 17:38:00 We have become trapped by the hard defining edges of our attitudes, beliefs and concepts and by our linguistic definitions. By virtue of this fact, the world doesn?t yield to us directly. Rather, our consensus description of it creates a virtual reality that?s increasingly characterized by disempowering perceptions. Consequently, our species mindset experiences a negative ...

A Natural History of Anarchy - Part I
2008-04-01 06:01:00 Evolution, Cooperation and Social Change? If the misery of our poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.?- Charles DarwinAll political and economic philosophies are based on fundamental assumptions about human nature. Early assumptions were based on the premise that a supernatural entity fashioned man in His image but that this creation was flawed. As a result, while we may strive for perfection, the harmony we seek is unattainable without embracing the Supreme Being and His law. Throughout recorded history, all-too-human tyrants have used such views to their political advantage.Even in the Republican systems that emerged out of the Enlightenment, the premise that there must be a class of rulers and a class to be ruled is the established norm (the modification being that the ruler is approved first by the populace rather than chosen through nepotism). Totalitarian regimes are predicated on the assumption that humans are innately selfish and ...
Mere Anarchy
2008-03-13 11:29:00 When I learned that Woody Allen was bringing out a new book I bought it sight unseen. I bought his last film Scoop without even bothering to read the reviews of it but I've not got round to it yet. If he released a set of knitting patterns I'd buy it. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those fans who think their hero can do no wrong – like most people I am all too aware of the failings of his films of the early noughties – but I also know that a 'bad' Woody Allen film is a decent film by anyone else's standards. I own them all bar a couple of the very early ones and have watched most of them many times over. I'd be hard pressed to name my favourite but my top five would likely include Hannah and Her Sisters, Play it Again, Sam and Sleeper and two others probably Manhattan and Radio Days but ask me again tomorrow and who knows?I also own all of Allen's writing, at least all that has made it into book form (I even had the comic strips once upon a time) and that includ...

Anarchy Online
2008-02-18 15:25:00 Two factions fight for control of the distant desert planet Rubi-Ka. Anarchy Online Anarchy Online (AO) is a science fiction themed massive multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG). The first three expansion packs, Notum Wars, Shadowlands and Alien Invasion, have received high praise and won 20 international awards. Step almost 30,000 years into the future, to an age where common surgical implants and microscopic nano-bots can relieve most forms of human suffering... or transform any normal being into a weapon of destructive force. On the planet of Rubi-Ka, a battle rages between the haves and have-nots in a time when the clans seek liberation from the all-powerful Omni-Tek corporation in the name of justice, voluntarily if possible; from the barrel of a gun if necessary. The leaders of both sides are desperately seeking a solution that can stop the violence ravaging the planet, against a backdrop of betrayal, military raids and conniving political games, cyborg assassins and...

Applied Anarchy - Voting As Self-Defense
2008-01-31 07:04:00 There’s a good portion of anarchists, agorists, libertarians, rebels, and general freedom lovers who believe that voting is not only pointless, but also immoral, unethical, or even anti-thetical to a belief in freedom. The argument generally goes something along the lines of voting “participating in” or “supporting” the corrupt government system. Well, I’ve been an ...

Plane Anarchy
2008-01-13 21:14:00 I went to Australia last year, it's a wondrous place. Very hot, very beautiful, very welcoming and not at all what I was expecting. I wasn't really anticipating people being unfriendly, but I wasn't preparing for the outstanding and sometimes unerring friendliness pretty much where everywhere I went. It was incredible really, I remember thinking that it wasn't that people were surveying me with, "I know, I'll be friendly, this sunburned man will like me then", they weren't thinking anything at all, it was all completely natural. It was as if it was completely illogical and downright odd not to be friendly and welcoming, like not being like that would be more effort and less fun. I experienced this feeling everywhere and at first it really knocked me sideways. For example, I was in a restaurant and the waitress dished out excellent service on a "peer to peer" basis rather than a "server to recipient" way. All the choices were aided by her and the dispensed service excellent b...

Punk House: Interiors in Anarchy
2008-01-09 00:29:00 Visiting some 42 houses in 25 states, 29-year-old Vermont photographer Abby Banks partnered with Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore on a hardcover collection that gives an inside glimpse into the collectivist lifestyle of the punk counterculture. Too often dismissed as dirty and anarchic, Banks' photographs demonstrate how the denizens of these collectives incorporate spontaneous creativity in every possible space. From Portland, Oregan to Brattleboro, Vermont the 300 images contrast the gritty face of a young runaway to the sardonic and crude humor of a cooking range with the words ?burn burn burn? painted across the oven door. The book has gathered much attention, with reviews in the New York Times' home and garden section as well as the lifestyle pages of the Boston Globe. So it's not surprising that its publisher Harry N. Abrams report that it's currently backordered for 2-3 weeks. Amazon has it in stock.

2007-12-13 23:11:00 The Bush administration was under court order not to discard evidence of detainee torture and abuse months before the CIA destroyed videotapes that revealed some of its harshest interrogation tactics. Star Trek XI: Anorak Anarchy
2007-11-09 14:41:00 After the gratuitously unnecessary (and now increasingly disputed) redesign of the Enterprise (it looks too predatory - too sleek and angular, unshockingly more like a warship rather than an explorer, though a lot of fans are now claiming this is not the official redesign) the latest indication that the producers are continuing Enterprise’s trend of paying absolutely zero attention to the show’s existing continuity has come in the form of Winona Ryder, cast as a younger version of Spock’s Vulcan mother. What an otherwise lovely idea. Unfortunately however, Spock didn’t have a Vulcan mother. He was half human, on his mother’s side. Like the Eighth Doctor, apparently. Nobs in space. I realise that a blog post about Star Trek can send most readers away in embarrassed droves, like knocking on the wrong door and finding yourself in an Incontinence Anonymous meeting. It’s just I really used to love this show as a kid. The cringingly reflex idea of a St...
