Andruw Jones has successful knee surgery
2008-05-28 13:26:00 Andruw Jones underwent a successful surgery to remove damaged cartilage from his right knee and will start his rehabilitation today. He figures to be out four to six weeks. Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Larry Bowa said Jones told him that his knee problem wasn't responsible for his .165 average."To me, it takes a lot for a guy to say that," Bowa said. "He could easily say, 'My knee hurt.' My hat goes off to him for saying that's not the reason. We all know he's a better hitter than he's showed. We thought he was going to hit 25 to 30 home runs. Hopefully, when he comes back, he'll be the Andruw that we know."

Andruw Jones on DL, Kershaw called up from Double-A (AP)
2008-05-25 06:06:00 The Los Angeles Dodgers placed center fielder Andruw Jones on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of an injured right knee that will require surgery and sideline him at least 4 to 6 weeks. Andruw Jones goes deep!
2008-04-19 18:17:00 I'm sure Andruw Jones owners (those who didn't bench him a week or so ago) are ecstatic that he's off the schneid and providing some of that lovely power for which you were willing to accept a sub-Mendoza average. Err...now's the time to sell? You think any of you can swing that? No? Well, good luck.

Andruw Jones
2008-04-16 23:09:00 So far, Andruw Jones hasn’t had the start to his Dodger career that anyone would have hoped for. His .149/.259/.234 line would make him a decent hitting pitcher, but as an $18 million dollar per year slugging outfielder, it’s pretty miserable. Is there something we can see in the graphs here that might ...

Trendspotting: Johan Santana, Andruw Jones
2008-03-04 15:18:00 So I went out looking for trends in some mock drafts this weekend, and I witnessed a fellow drafter take Jake Peavy ahead of Johan Santana. He was admittedly biased (Yankee fan) and immediately chastised, but I began to wonder about the effects of changing leagues for a pitcher. In thinking about Trendspotting, I went with "change of scenery" as my theme and included Andruw Jones as well.Johan Santana: In 2004, his best season in Minnesota, Santana struck out 265 batters in 228 innings. His strikeout total fell last year to 235 in only 219 innings, still good for third-best in the league (behind Peavy's 240 and Scott Kazmir's 236). This season, I like his strikeout total to rise astronomically, because all the lineups he faces will replace designated hitters with pitchers. How have other pitchers fared when jumping from league to league? Bronson Arroyo, when he came to Cincinnati from Boston in 2006, struck out 184 batters in 240 innings, as compared to only 100 in 205 innings the...

2008-02-28 21:32:00 Andruw Jones just didn’t look right in that Dodgers uniform, at least in the eyes of his former manager. “He looked better in a Braves uniform,” Bobby Cox said. He Said, He Said
2007-12-08 06:07:00 I'm not here to criticize the Andruw Jones signing. $18.1 per may be a little pricey, but that seems to be what decent center fielders are going for these days, and it's only for two years. I do agree with Keith Law when he says that it could end up being a mistake if it's a prelude to a Kemp trade and a starting role for Juan Pierre. But I digress; what I'd really like to talk to you about today is the continuing presence of Bill Plaschke at the Los Angeles Times. What's up with that?Folks will complain because Jones, 30, is coming off the worst full season of his career, but every question has an answer.You say he had a bad summer? I say he still would have led the Dodgers in home runs (26) and runs batted in (94).I say RBI are lineup-dependent and tell us very little about Jones' performance. I also say that he hit .222/.311/.413. He may have hit more homers than anyone on the Dodgers, but if we're only considering offense, would you really have taken him over Russ Martin,...
Cubs Willing To Pay $12-15MM Per Year For Fukudome?
2007-12-07 02:41:00 UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 7:39pm: Sandy Alderson was on 1090 AM XX Sports Radio tonight. He said the Padres gave Fukudome one of the top two or three offers the team ever proposed. An answer from Fukudome is expected tonight or tomorrow. FROM 12-6-07 at 2:23pm: According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, it "sounds like the Cubs might go as high as $12-15MM per year" for outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. He adds that Fukudome would have to be willing to take less money to play on the West Coast if he is to become a Padre. Many players have before, so don't go buying those Fukudome Cubs jerseys just yet. Krasovic also has a note on Andruw Jones. Apparently the only other concrete offer outside of the Dodgers was a two-year, $22MM one from the Royals. showad();

Today's Arbitration Decisions
2007-12-01 19:18:00 The decision whether to offer your own free agent arbitration can affect your team in two ways: you may end up retaining a player you didn't want, or you may score a draft pick or two as compensation. With that in mind let's run down the rumors regarding some Type A and B free agents. The Red Sox plan on offering arbitration to Type B Eric Gagne. Worst case scenario, they hang onto him for one more year. Best case, they get a sandwich pick. The Astros have to decide on Trever Miller and Mark Loretta. Both are Type Bs, but the Astros might not want them back. Richard Justice notes that the old Astro regime made a mistake not offering arbitration to Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte. The Angels decided not to offer arby to Bartolo Colon, because the most they could give him would be a 20% pay cut. So best case scenario they could get him for one year, $11.2MM. Colon is not a Type A or B, so there's no compensation regardless. The Phils will ...

Rangers Rumors
2007-11-25 21:29:00 T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com has some Rangers notes. Of course, much of it revolves around the outfield, since they missed out on Torii Hunter. On that front, they're exploring Kosuke Fukudome, who is reportedly seeking three years and $30 million. Add the Rangers to the Cubs, the Phillies, the Yomiuri Giants and his former team, the Chunichi Dragons. I would toss the Nats and possibly the Twins in that group, and there are probably other teams where Fukudome would fit. The Rangers have a level of interest in both Aaron Rowand and Andruw Jones, but not nearly to the level that they were interested in Hunter. They won't go five years at $75 million for Rowand like they did Hunter, and are concerned with Jones's 2007 drop-off. Mike Cameron is also mentioned, but Jon Daniels has said that "we would like to find a long-term fit for us." Cameron would be little more than a stopgap. Jose Guillen is also mentioned, though there is little elaboration. I'd bet that many teams are going to w...

MLB Rumors: What About Andruw Jones?
2007-11-23 17:49:00 Now that the #1 CF is off the market, those teams that lost out (Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers) may turn their attention to Scott Boras' clinet, Andruw Jones. However, there doesn't seem to be much interest in Jones. One can't help but sense Jones is collateral damage in the owners' dislike of his agent. Here are reports from three possible suitors: Dave O'Brien of Atlanta Journal Constitution blogs on the possibility of Jones returning to Atlanta. can tell you, everything I've heard is that the Braves will not be, that he's not coming back, regardless of speculation by many who wonder if Jones might go around the lightning-rod agent Scott Boras' back again and come back for a reduced one-year contract. No, I'm told. Not gonna happen. Period. Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star writes, "The Royals show scant interest in Rowand but continue to monitor Jones to see if he shows any willingness to accept a three-year deal or less." He also leads off his...

Will Andruw Take One Year?
2007-11-20 22:44:00 According to Scott Boras, his client Andruw Jones will not be taking a one-year deal to rebuild his value. Boras cites Jones' home run total, RBI total, and Gold Gloves as evidence that he deserves a marquee contract. That might work if it were 1990 and OBP, SLG, and better fielding metrics weren't standard. Is Boras losing his touch? Boras said the same thing a couple of months ago: "I wouldn't even consider a one-year contract with Andruw Jones." This was a few days after Andruw admitted he'd listen to any offer. Crasnick's article (linked in the first post) indicates that only the Nationals have expressed interest in him so far. showad();

Dodgers Pursuing Aaron Rowand
2007-11-15 19:21:00 Buster Olney's blog today had some good rumors to digest. Olney writes that the Dodgers are making a "heavy play" for Aaron Rowand. Apparently they love the idea of adding a good character guy to the clubhouse. They'd be paying $25MM for Rowand and Juan Pierre in their outfield for the next several years. The Phillies are making a "big play" for Mike Lowell. This certainly doesn't jive with the speculation that the Phils only have $10MM to spend and it's going toward pitching. By the way, Ruben Amaro Jr. ruled out the possibility of signing Torii Hunter. Olney has an exec source who believes Hunter will sign with the Rangers for six years and $90MM. Olney doesn't see Kenny Rogers apologizing to the Rangers anytime soon. Mike Cameron has a better chance of re-signing with the Padres, now that his 2008 season will be reduced by 15% in playing time. Six teams are in on Matt Clement, but he's still expected to land in San Diego. T...

Padres Targeting Matt Kemp?
2007-11-14 16:16:00 As always, Tom Krasovic has the scoop on the Padres. Free agents Geoff Blum and Milton Bradley are not expected back. Blum wanted to return but the Padres are going to pass. Blum is likely to sign with Houston. The Padres may try a combo of Scott Hairston and Chase Headley in left field next year. Wouldn't it make more sense to push Kevin Kouzmanoff out there? It'll probably be a moot point, as the Padres are hoping to sign Geoff Jenkins. Krasovic tantalizes us by not elaborating on this tidbit: Responding to Colletti's preference for veterans, the Padres are contemplating three-team trade scenarios that would bring them young Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp. In my opinion, any kind of deal that nets the Padres Kemp would have to involve Headley. The Padres may offer Andruw Jones a one-year, $17MM deal. However Scott Boras is still acting like Jones' 2007 didn't happen. showad();

Nats Like Andruw, Livan, Jennings, Colon, Glavine
2007-11-07 03:24:00 UPDATE, EVENING OF 11-6-07: MLB.com's Bill Ladson has some more good Nationals information. His source says that both Livan Hernandez and Tom Glavine are interested in the club, but they only have the budget for one of them. Glavine makes more sense. Ladson also mentions that Bowden has his eye on Rocco Baldelli, and idea I like. I can't really think of a great match for a trade though. FROM MORNING OF 11-6-07: According to the Washington Post, Nationals president Stan Kasten recently met with Andruw Jones at the center fielder's home in Atlanta. Kasten, of course, was formerly president of the Braves. Kasten's contact with Jones is described as "extremely preliminary." That makes sense, since technically the two parties are not allowed to talk dollars and cents. But come on - it's not like Andruw's house is bugged by MLB. The Nationals' open-minded pledge has already led them to contact Torii Hunte...

Rangers Rumors: DeJesus, Lamb, Millar
2007-11-04 04:42:00 Evan Grant writes for the Dallas Morning News, but he posted this column at night. Go figure. He's got some new info regarding the Rangers. As you know, the Rangers have had difficulty finding a long-term center fielder. That's the main focus of this offseason. The team has already shown interest in Torii Hunter and Aaron Rowand, the top center fielders available. Other free agents such as Andruw Jones and Mike Cameron appear to be in play as well. Grant's trade candidates: Coco Crisp, David DeJesus, Mark Kotsay, and Carlos Beltran. We've speculated on DeJesus to Atlanta in the past. With DeJesus signed cheaply through 2011 and the market at the position robust this winter, it might make sense for Dayton Moore to wait a year to shop him aggressively. Grant adds that Jon Daniels is considering some affordable options for first base. They've already talked to Mike Lamb's agent and like Kevin Millar as well. Lamb came up...

Dodgers Serious About Andruw Jones
2007-10-30 22:18:00 Bill Shaikin has a small note in today's column: Scott Boras is believed to consider the Dodgers a more serious contender for center fielder Andruw Jones than for Alex Rodriguez. It's not the first time we've seen the Dodgers linked to Jones; David O'Brien suggested it several weeks ago. Ned Colletti, you may recall, wasn't exactly thrilled with Scott Boras a year ago when J.D. Drew unexpectedly opted out. But it sounded like much of his anger was directed at Drew. Boras seems to disagree with the notion that Jones should come with a significant price cut this winter. Before the season he was talking about $20MM annually. He'd still want at least $15MM per year. The signing could leave the Dodgers with an outfield of Juan Pierre, Jones, Matt Kemp, and Andre Ethier. One of the last two could be peddled, and the team might have soured on Kemp a bit. How about Kemp for Miguel Tejada? showad();

State Of The Dodgers
2007-10-10 23:07:00 The L.A. Daily News' Tony Jackson has a look at the Dodgers' upcoming offseason. You also might be interested in my recent Needs and Luxuries post on the team. A summary of Jackson's column: Juan Pierre could be shifted to left field to allow the Dodgers to employ a stronger arm in center field. It's odd...teams seem to be souring on last winter's signings even when they received exactly what everyone expected (Pierre and Jason Marquis, for example). It'd be different for the Red Sox to sour on J.D. Drew, he played well below expectations in Year 1. Anyway, Pierre could be moved to accomodate Matt Kemp (perhaps putting Andre Ethier in right), or the Dodgers could pursue a center fielder. They've already been connected to Andruw Jones. The Dodgers perceive third base as a big hole, apparently not willing to give Andy LaRoche another look. Of course we have to mention Alex Rodriguez. But how about Mike Lowell? Baseball News From Yesterday - Andruw Jones
2007-10-03 13:46:00 So much for uber-agent Scott Boras's warning to the Atlanta Braves last week that his client, Andruw Jones, would not take a home town discount. Yesterday, the Braves announced they would not try to resign him anyhow. With this development, specualtion can begin on who will play centerfield for the Braves next season. If the team signs a CF like Mike Cameron or Cory Patterson, then further specualtion about that player's former centerfield job begins. Geez, thinking about the Orioles trying to make a good free agent decision after losing Patterson hurts. Unless rookie Brandon Jones can play centerfield, there does not appear to be any good internal options for the Braves to use in center in 2008. However, the Braves have broken in rookies that weren't considering ready for full-time work i.e. C Brian McCann, RF Jeff Francouer and C/1B Jarrod Saltalamacchia, so a season with Jones in center shadowed by a veteran like Brady Clark isn't implausible. Fantasy ...

Andruw Likely Gone
2007-09-28 19:08:00 Update: Keith Law just predicted Torii Hunter will make 16MM/year in Texas. That gels with what Andruw's seeking. Tim discussed The Andruw Jones Situation recently and whether he'd accept a 1-year deal or a 5-year hometown discount. Now, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution discusses the inevitable departure of Andruw Jones here and here. Despite Andruw coming off career-worst season of hitting .222 with 26 homeruns and 94 RBIs, Scott Boras has said there's "no way" he'll accept a 1-year deal. Instead, he's seeking a contract at the "fair-market value" of $17-20 million per year. That's Vernon Wells-esque. And why not? Wells has yet to approach Andruw's career production. And it's always easy to forget after 12 years in the bigs that Andruw Jones is only 30. Jones has three games left on his contract that paid him $75MM over the last 6 years, a real hometown discount. Boras has made it known they have no i...

The Andruw Jones Situation
2007-09-26 16:33:00 David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a thorough dissection of the Andruw Jones situation. The Braves have yet to speak to Jones, and their intentions for the center field spot in '08 are anybody's guess. If the Braves want to go short-term, it appears Andruw would consider a one-year offer. Scott Boras scoffed at the idea a few months ago but Jones had a subpar second half since then. If the Braves still want to lock him up, O'Brien reports that Jones might take a five-year, $75MM pact. I don't see the Braves doing it. As for fitting Andruw into the 2008 budget, the team's president has indicated that payroll is likely to rise next year. It could reach the $90-100MM range. Payroll stood at $87MM on Opening Day. Here's the problem: even subtracting Jones' $13.5MM salary and replacing him internally with, say, Kelly Johnson, the Braves are looking at roughly a $7MM net increase just with current players. Hudson,...

Andruw Jones and the Nationals
2007-09-11 18:14:00 When we last considered the idea of the Nats signing Andruw Jones, it was April and he seemed in line for a six or seven year contract. The idea of bringing in Andruw was to create some goodwill with the fans through some rebuilding years, a la the Gil Meche signing in Kansas City. The consensus of the commenters at MLBTR was that this was a bad idea. Mark Zuckerman of the Washington Times re-started this conversation yesterday. He notes that center field is still the Nats' most obvious need. Sorry, Nook. Of course there's the Stan Kasten connection and the new ballpark. However there is now one difference from our April discussion: Jones had an awful 2007 season. His .314 OBP and .419 SLG are both his second-worst career marks. Overall in his career he's at .263/.342/.498. I'd expect something more like that next year. Andruw will be 31 when the '07 season starts. Given the decent-sized class of free agent ...

Graziano's Latest: Andruw, Dunn, Fukudome
2007-08-12 18:04:00 Dan Graziano has a new article up regarding the free agent outfielder crop. He spoke to two anonymous GMs. Let's take a look at some highlights. Andruw Jones has an awful .216/.312/.418 line this year. He's been outdone by Shawn Green, Sammy Sosa, Jose Vidro, and Shannon Stewart in terms of OPS. Nonetheless, Jones isn't expected to come at a discount. Scott Boras will just play up the defense, the RBIs, the career totals, whatever. Graziano says "it's hard to see" the Reds picking up Adam Dunn's $13MM option. This would just be plain dumb on Wayne Krivsky's part. Given the $0.5MM buyout, it's basically like signing Dunn to a one-year, $12.5MM deal. How many teams would pass on a huge power bat on a no-risk one-year commitment? If the Reds don't exercise the option, it will be change for change's sake. And a bad decision. Kosuke Fukudome is the dark horse, a possible impact right fielder from Japan....

Defending Barry Bonds for Idiots
2007-08-07 03:16:00 Everyone at this point must be a little tired of hearing about Bonds chasing Mays, chasing Ruth, chasing Aaron, and now finally hitting number 755. Nonetheless, since the feat occurred just this weekend, I suppose we can entertain a few more opinions, right? There are certainly a lot of players who refuse to credit Bonds' accomplishments. Since I'm on their side, I won't bother posting their opinions, but rather, I'll post the silly ones?the ones who try to invent some sort of twisted logic to allow them to support Bonds. First up, Andruw Jones:For Andruw Jones, all the talk about Barry Bonds and drug use isn't an issue. "It doesn't matter," the Atlanta Braves star said Sunday. "There's a lot of people that take steroids, and they don't hit 755 home runs."We've all probably heard this argument a few times, and its logic never ceases to escape me. We're talking about Bonds passing Hank Aaron here, so is it relevant that "a lot of people take steroids?" I'm pretty sure Han...
