Paul Eaton 16 May 2008 Sammy Lee today spoke of his delight after returning to Anfield as assistant manager to Rafael Benitez. The former Reds midfielder has signed in for a third spell with the Reds as a replacement for Alex Miller, who left to begin a managerial career last week. After spells with the England management team and Bolton Wanderers, Lee is now thrilled to be back with the club he served so loyally as both a player and a coach. "I've been away for a while but everyone knows what this club means to me and it's a great pleasure to be back," he told Liverpoolfc.tv. "When a club the size of Liverpool comes in for you and when a manager of the magnitude of Rafael Benitez wants you then you can't say no. When I found out they were interested in me I was really thrilled. "After the sabbatical I've had I just wish the season was starting tomorrow, but the players have had a long, difficult and demanding season and they need to get away and get their ba...

Kewell Close To Anfield Exit
2008-03-14 10:22:00
Injuries and patchy form has seen Kewell toil at Liverpool since moving from troubled Leeds in 2003, and he is only becoming a more marginal figure with time having not featured since the FA Cup defeat at Barnsley last month as well as being completely omitted from the squad that traveled to Milan in midweek. Now there are reports that the 29-year-old has asked Rafael Benitez for permission to link up with a second-string Australian squad in Singapore next week, rather than work on his fitness alone at Melwood.Benitez has not yet given Kewell an answer, but if he does agree that would be a clear indication that the Spanish coach is no longer planning with the player, who is known to still have several admirers in Italy and Spain.
MASCHERANO SIGNS FOUR YEAR ANFIELD DEAL
2008-02-29 17:30:00
Javier Mascherano today signed a permanent deal at Anfield and admitted: "This is the best moment in my career." The Argentine international has put pen to paper on a four year contract with the Reds, bringing to an end one of the longest transfer sagas in recent years. "I am very, very happy and now I can concentrate just on playing football," Mascherano told Liverpoolfc.tv. "I said all along that I wanted to stay at Liverpool and now that I have signed I can say this is the best and the biggest moment in my career so far. "From the first day I arrived at Liverpool the feeling was good and I knew this was where I wanted to play my football. It's good news for me and my family that everything is sorted and I know where my future is going to be. I just want to do my best for the fans and the people of the club. "I am at a top side and I know I can win titles here. That's the big thing for me. I want to be at a club where we can win trophies and have success." Manager Rafael ...
INTER FEAR 'INCREDIBLE' ANFIELD
2008-02-18 11:53:00
Sporting Life 18 February 2008Julio Cruz says the intimidating atmosphere at Anfield could be the biggest threat to Inter's European dreams. The reigning Serie A champions take on Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League first knockout stage tie on Tuesday night. The Nerazzurri are heading for another domestic title as they lead the table by 11 points this season, while Liverpool are still smarting from that shock home FA Cup defeat by Barnsley. But Argentine striker Cruz says the atmosphere on a big European night on Merseyside can be a great leveller. He told the club's official website: "The atmosphere at the stadium will be incredible. And Liverpool have some fantastic players, but Inter start on the same level."While Liverpool have struggled to recreate the domestic glory days of years gone by, they've still managed to reach two Champions League finals in the last three seasons. A fact not lost on Cruz.He added: "The Champions League is a strange competition, there a...
REDS HIT THREE IN ANFIELD WIN
2008-02-04 11:56:00
Setanta 02 February 2008Liverpool beat Sunderland 3-0 at Anfield on Saturday evening, but were far from their best as they climbed into fifth place in the Premier League.Despite lighting the scoreboard up three times, the home side will know that there is a lot of work to do before they can get back in the race for fourth spot in the league.Peter Crouch broke the deadlock on 57 minutes with a fine header, before Fernando Torres doubled the lead and Steven Gerrard finished it all off with a late penalty. After a dreadful first-half that failed to offer up any major incidents, Liverpool started the second period in quite lively fashion.Jermaine Pennant and Javier Mascherano both tried to open up gaps in the Sunderland midfield, but there was just no end product attached with their determined charges forward. However, that end product did arrive on 57 minutes when Jamie Carragher burst up the right wing and supplied the perfect cross for Crouch to head in.That goal lifted the atmosphere ...

Iconic New Anfield / Liverpool stadium
2008-01-25 12:33:00
When I first heard that the stadium was going to be slightly downgraded, I feared it might mean a complete redesign of the iconic plans revealed last summer. Fortunately they choose to stick with HKS who only made minor modifications to the original design, what we're left with is something more efficient and still very much unique & iconic in nature. It's expected to be open in 3.5 years time which is quite a bit back on what was previously hoped for. The capacity is a healthy 71,000 with the Kop having 18,500. Thankfully the acoustics of the roof will still accentuate the atmosphere so nothing lost there. Here's the latest pictures (click on any of them for full size) :-

Gillett To Buy Hicks' Anfield Share?
2008-01-18 19:00:00
A report in the Guardian suggests American businessman George Gillett is considering buying out co-owner Tom Hicks' share in Liverpool, with the Dubai consortium allegedly involved. Talk about Liverpool's owners being forced to sell the club has continued to rage, but a report on Friday has suggested that a deal may simply involve one of the pair, George Gillett, buying out the other's stake. The co-owners released a joint statement earlier this week stressing that they were not looking to part with the club they invested into less than a year ago. But reports continue to speculate that refinancing the original loan is proving difficult with the current global credit crunch - any such move would only serve to burden the club with even mor...
Match Prediction: Liverpool at Anfield
2008-01-18 06:01:00
We might be on the same points as Liverpool but that doesn't mean we're as good as Liverpool. They have, in Steven Gerrard, one of the best central midfielders in the World who can, quite literally, win games for them. It's not just what he does or the goals he scores - it's how he gets everyone else up for the game. His attitude on the pitch acts as a catalyst and to some extent can determine how Liverpool play.
Defender Skrtel Passes Anfield Medical
2008-01-08 16:44:00
Slovak defender Martin Skrtel looks set to become Liverpool's latest signing after he passed a medical at Anfield.Liverpool appear set to clinch a deal for Zenit St. Petersburg's Martin Skrtel after he completed a medical today. The Slovakian international will set the Merseysiders back £6.5m, providing American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillet give their seal of approval at a meeting with chief executive Rick Parry today. Personal terms have already been agreed with the club, and should the deal go through it would make Skrtel the most expensive defender in Liverpool's history. Centre-Back Hunt Liverpool have been chasing a new centre-back for some time, and after their pursuit of Gabriel Heinze was knocked back by Manchester United and Gabriel Palletta was sent packing back to Argentina they've clearly had limited options in that position. Daniel Agger's long-term injury has forced boss Rafael Benítez to rely almost exclusively on Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia thi...

Nothing Important Happening At Anfield
2007-11-26 23:48:00
…which is why there’ve been a lack in posts. My bad guys; my bad. Solid win over the Toon over the weekend. My wife managed to fill up the PVR with episodes of Oprah, CSI (bizarrely, all three varieties) and a load of other assorted crap which meant I didn’t manage to watch the whole game. The PVR was supposed to start recording at 7:45am (I had gotten in at 2am after an 11:15pm footy game) but clearly things went a bit Pete Tong. When I did turn on the game, it was 3-0 and El Nino had just missed another, basically, open goal. Luckily the game was on time delay later in the evening so I did get to watch Lucas’s great performance, Gerrard’s inspirational performance (glad he saved it for the weekend because he was gash against Croatia for England) and, amazingly, another solid outing for Sami Hyypia. But let’s face it, if we can sign a decent centre back in either the January or off-season, then the “Liverpool Hall of Fame” bound Fin...

What's with booing the Reds at Anfield ?
2007-10-08 09:14:00
Granted the lads have hardly been deserving a round of applause lately but whatever happened to "You'll Never Walk Alone". It's the clubs moto, something many of us have been brought up believing in since we were little kids.Remember Istanbul, pubs were still packed (certainly in Ireland) at 3-0 and full of YNWA being sung and everyone getting behind the team, that's how it should be (we didn't exactly play well that night either).Moving on to present day and people don't seem to be getting behind the Reds anymore, what a shame ! Genuine title contenders is what I think we should all justifiably expect from Liverpool, given the vast sums of money spent on players and the time Rafa has had to build a complete squad. At the same time we should to continue to support the team through thick and thin.

His Lordship returns to Anfield tomorrow
2007-10-02 11:57:00
Former club record signing Djibril Cisse is set to return to Anfield tomorrow night with Marseille, he's apparently concerned that the anfield faithful will boo him ! I'm no psychologist but I reckon the best way to ensure that doesn't happen is to NOT score against Liverpool ;-)He says it will be an emotional experience for him to meet and play against his former teammates, thats ok Cisse, we understand, again please don't score !The man of many hairdos never did quite cut it at Anfield, but let's not kid ourselves he has bags of pace and is well capable of scoring, something to which Hyypia recently attested (he spent 2 years marking him in training).Former LFC players often feel a point to prove upon returning to Anfield and subsequently up their game, "break a leg" Cisse ;-)
