2007-12-24 02:40:00
A spokesman for the Catholic Church said that the figures for Mass attendance sounded "about right", although he stressed that there were no precise statistics. But a representative of the Church of England said that Christian Research had seriously underestimated its churchgoing numbers.

300 Anglicans to be Received into the Catholic Church
2007-10-25 14:43:00
Read the whole article here. H/T NotMyOpinionUP to 300 Irish Anglicans could soon be joining the Roman Catholic Church to the traditional hymn tune 'Faith of Our Fathers'.A report in today's 'Irish Catholic' newspaper claims that three Church of Ireland parishes are Romeward-bound, and may soon be received by Pope Benedict into full communion with the Catholic Church. This change of denominational allegiance is part of a long-standing doctrinal feud over the ordination of women. It's nice to have some good news every now and then.
Were "Early Baptist Founders" Anglicans?
2007-09-17 07:31:00
I recently received the following quote on my post entitled Are Baptists Protestant? I felt that it deserved an entire post dedicated to its rebuttal.“As John Smythe and the early Baptist founders were Anglican Separatists and the Anglican Church is very much a protestant church, I would argue that, yes, Baptists are protestants.”This premise is false on three fronts.Baptists predate the Anglican Church. The Anglican church was not founded until 1534 A.D. (17 years after the spark of the reformation). In fact, the very founding of this denomination came as the result of a conflict between Henry VIII and the Catholic Pope. Henry wanted a divorce from Queen Catherine of Aragon and the pope would not allow it. In retaliation, Henry declared himself as the supreme potentate of the Church of England and the Anglican Church was officially born.Baptists, however, were alive and well long before the advent of this new religion. Pay special attention to the following quotes.“We sha...

Author: Eric Subject: African Anglicans Split Over HomosexualityPosted: Wed Sep 12, 2007 7:06 am (GMT -4) African Anglicans Split Over Homosexuality Lillian Kwon Anglican churches in Zimbabwe have expressed their intention to pull out of the Central African province in opposition to other churches which were in favor of homosexuals. Three of five dioceses in Zimbabwe had "unanimously agreed" to sever ties with dioceses in the Central African province, saying it will not "stand with homosexuals," a cleric at Harare diocese, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Agence France-Presse. The cleric noted that according to the Diocesan Act adopted by the Harare diocese in August and put into effect on Aug. 4, the Zimbabwe church body will "dissociate and sever relationship with any individual, group of people, organization, institution, diocese, province or people who indulge in or sympathize or compromises with homosexuality." On Saturda...

Reggae music and the Anglican Church: By KARAN MINNIS, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter - Nassau, Bahamas: Can you imagine the congregation at St. Matthew's Anglican Church or Christ The King Church, belting out the Bob Marley hit "One Love" during Sunday mass? Well if you're shocked, don't be, because it just could happen, and as a matter of fact Jamaican parishes plan to include the lyrics of songs from two of the country's most famed reggae artists – Bob Marley and Peter Tosh – in the next publication of its church hymnal. Two weeks ago Kimone Thompson, a Jamaican Observer staff member, reported that Anglicans are "going reggae", after an announcement by The Reverend Canon Ernle Gordon, the rector of St Mary the Virgin Anglican Church, at the Michael Manley awards function for community self-reliance at the Little Theatre in Kingston. Rev. Gordan said that the two songs would be Tosh's version of Psalm 27 and Marley's internationally acclaimed 'One Love'. And acco...

Author: Eric Subject: Conservative Anglicans Losing Hope in Episcopal ChurchPosted: Tue Jul 31, 2007 8:41 am (GMT -4) Conservative Anglicans Losing Hope in Episcopal Church Lillian Kwon Conservative Anglicans in the United States are finding themselves living through an "extended Good Friday," mourning for The Episcopal Church. The Anglican Communion Network, an orthodox group of Anglicans discontent with The Episcopal Church, began its fourth annual council meeting in Bedford, Texas, on Monday. Over 80 representatives opened the two-day meeting with disappointment in a church many had grown up in. "Because our sense of order is such that we have always sought to be Christian first and Episcopalian next, we find ourselves on this present Way of the Cross," said the Rt. Rev. Robert Duncan, moderator of the Anglican Communion Network, in his opening address. A growing number of Episcopal parishes and leaders have left The Episcopal Church, citing the ...
Proud Anglicans of the Week
2007-07-30 11:14:00
Here's a roundup of some great Anglican "via media" blogs I've discovered this month. All of these folks are thoughtful Christians determined to hold together the compassionate, progressive, dynamic spirit of the church's liberals and the respect for tradition, truth and theological sophistication of the conservatives. They give me hope that the current fundamentalist-secularist impasse won't last forever. Christopher at Betwixt and Between offers a spirited and GLBT-friendly exposition of the Incarnation in his wonderfully titled post A Shitting God. (Hint: If this offends you, you're exactly the person who needs to read it.) We don't want our God to come to us as flesh and blood, bone and sinew. But he did, not deeming equality with God something to be grasped at as did our first parents, but rather relishing simply to be an earthen one--"a shitting god" as one rabbi put it, became truly one of us in all of our comical glory, with our orifices and pleasurable bits, goin...
News & Current Events :: 'Critical Time' for Divided Anglicans
2007-07-20 21:43:00
Author: Eric Subject: 'Critical Time' for Divided AnglicansPosted: Fri Jul 20, 2007 3:43 pm (GMT -4) 'Critical Time' for Divided Anglicans Lillian Kwon Anglican leaders in the Global South are calling it a "critical time" for a divided Anglican Communion and one that will shape their future. "We are concerned for the future of our Communion as a truly global fellowship and our witness before the world as a respected ecclesial family within the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church," said a statement released by the Global South Steering Committee, which met in London, July 16-18. The steering committee said they were distressed over resolutions passed by The Episcopal Church's the U.S. branch of Anglicanism which rejected the requests of the Anglican leaders representing 38 provinces and the plan to develop a "pastoral scheme" where Anglican leaders outside The Episcopal Church would oversee conservative American dioceses and thos...

Author: Eric Subject: Canada Anglicans Reject Blessing Same-Sex UnionsPosted: Mon Jun 25, 2007 8:20 am (GMT -4) Canada Anglicans Reject Blessing Same-Sex Unions Lillian Kwon Anglican delegates of the Church of Canada rejected the blessing of same-sex unions on Sunday after voting on the hotly debated issue was deferred for a day. The resolution that would have enabled priests to conduct blessing ceremonies for gay couples who already married in civil ceremonies was defeated by a narrow vote. Lay and clergy delegates voted in favor while the House of Bishops voted against it. Majority rule is required in all three orders laity, clergy, and bishops. The vote came a day after some 300 delegates at the national meeting of the General Synod the Anglican Church of Canada's highest governing body agreed that same-sex blessings do not conflict with the "core doctrines" of the church. Both supporters and opponents call the decisions confusing, according to Winn...

Author: Eric Subject: Anglicans Approve Same-Sex MotionPosted: Sun Jun 24, 2007 4:48 pm (GMT -4) Anglicans Approve Same-Sex Motion Richard Foot WINNIPEG -- The Anglican Church of Canada has declared that the blessing of same-sex unions does not contravene the church's core doctrine. Delegates to the church's national meeting here made the historic decision in a narrow vote following a morning of emotional debate Sunday. Delegates have not yet voted on the question of whether to let its priests actually perform blessing ceremonies for gay and lesbian couples. That vote is expected Sunday afternoon. Ron Chaplin, an Ottawa Anglican and member of Integrity, the church's gay and lesbian advocacy group, was cautiously optimistic about the decision on doctrine. "The door is now open," he said, "for gay and lesbian members to be welcomed fully into this church." Source: http://www.canada.com/

Author: Eric Subject: Canadian Anglicans Vote Saturday on Same-Sex BlessingsPosted: Fri Jun 22, 2007 5:03 pm (GMT -4) Canadian Anglicans Vote Saturday on Same-Sex Blessings Douglas Todd WINNIPEG -- Even if the Anglican Church of Canada votes on Saturday to approve same-sex blessings, the spokesman for the world's top Anglican says the Canadian denomination will not be kicked out of the global Anglican communion. "No scenario could emerge" from this week's Anglican general synod that would lead to the Archbishop of Canterbury expelling the Canadian church from the 76-million-member global Anglican denomination, says Kenneth Kearon, secretary general of the Anglican Communion. The right-hand man to Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, told CanWest News Service Thursday: "There's no question the Anglican Church of Canada is a valued member of the Anglican Communion. There's never been a scenario considered that would lead to the exclusion of the A...
News & Current Events :: Anglicans Vote on Gay and Lesbian Issues
2007-03-02 15:31:01
Author: Eric Subject: Anglicans Vote on Gay and Lesbian Issues Posted: Thu Mar 01, 2007 12:26 am (GMT -5) Anglicans Vote on Gay and Lesbian Issues By Thomas Wagner LONDON (AP) - The Church of England's assembly on Wednesday affirmed existing teaching that homosexuality is no bar to full participation in the church but avoided the fractious debate within the Anglican Communion about accepting gay sexual relationships. A motion approved nearly unanimously by the governing General Synod disposed of language including a commitment to "respect the patterns of holy living to which lesbian and gay Christians aspire," but affirmed "that homosexual orientation in itself is no bar to a faithful Christian life or in full participation to lay and ordained ministry." Bishop Michael Perham of Gloucester had urged the synod not to take a side in the debate about whether people in gay relationships can be good Christians or, as in the U.S. Episcopal Church, serve a...
