Smith confident of repeating Ahmedabad success
2008-04-16 05:16:00 Kanpur: Sounding a note of warning to the hosts, South African captain Graeme Smith on Thursday said that they would go into the third Test here on Friday with a well thought-out plan to prevent the Indians from equalling the three-match series. Sounding too confident of his boys, Smith said his team had made definite plans and this time they would play even better than what they had in Ahmedabad where they had handed an innings defeat to Team India. Addressing a press conference here before the practice session at the Green Park stadium, the Proteas skipper admitted that like the Aussies, the Indians are a tough team to beat in their homeground. ''But we have done this in this sub-contitent by beating Pakistan, Bangladesh and now India,'' he pointed out. Setting aside the controversy ranging around the condition of the pitch, the SA skipper said such things happened and the homeside always got the benefit. '' Our boys are focused to perform to their best and things will chan...
India bundled out for 76 runs in Ahmedabad Test
2008-04-05 07:14:00 AHMEDABAD: South Africa's pace bowlers ripped through the much vaunted Indian batting line-up at the Motera Stadium on the city's outskirts on Thursday, bundling the hosts out for a paltry 76 runs in 20 overs in the second cricket Test between the two sides.( Watch: India all out for 76 runs at Motera )Led by Dale Steyn and Makaya Ntini, the Proteas sent the Indian innings spiralling into an abyss from the first few overs of the match.Indian captain Anil Kumble, who passed a late fitness test, won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that had more than a tinge of green on it. With Sachin Tendulkar out with a groin injury, India went for the extra bowling option, picking Irfan Pathan in his place.R P Singh kept his spot, despite appearing to be short of both form and fitness in Chennai. South Africa made no changes from the side that got them a comfortable draw in the Chennai Test.Ntini drew first blood for his team by having opener Wasin Jaffer caught at slip by South Afri...
Injured Tendulkar out of Ahmedabad Test, Kaif returns to side
2008-03-31 05:47:00 Mumbai : India suffered a big blow as champion batsman Sachin Tendulkar was on Sunday ruled out of the second cricket Test against South Africa, after aggravating a groin injury. Mohammed Kaif has been included in the side in place of Tendulkar for the crucial second Test, which will be played in Ahemedabad from April 3. Speedster Ishant Sharma has also been included in the fifteen for the Test, informed chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar. Tendulkar, who had suffered a groin injury in Australia, had aggravated it and did not take the field on the final day of the drawn opening Test on Sunday at Chennai's M A Chidambaram Stadium. The forced absence of Tendulkar, who made zero in the mammoth Indian first innings total of 627, has given the chance to Kaif, who was in great form in domestic cricket this season, to get back into the squad after a long absence. The 27-year-old UP batsman played the last of his 13 Test matches in end-June last year at Kingston against the West Indies b...

Anil Kumble in Meerabai Not Out!
2008-03-06 12:03:00 Team India’s Test captain Anil Kumble will make his debut in a film called Meerabai Not Out. The leg spinner will play a cameo in the film which revolves around a keen cricket fan played by Mandira. About the Indian captain’s role in the film, she says, ?He will be seen in one or two scenes. I don’t know about his acting skills but it’s good that I have worked with such a great sportsperson who is kind hearted and down to earth. In real also I’m a great fan of his so I was very excited to work with him. I’m eagerly awaiting the release.? About her character, Mandira says, ?I play Meera Achrekar, a mathematics teacher at Vishwaprem Vidyalaya. She has been happy and single for quite a while but the great love of her life has been cricket and Anil Kumble. Unlike most teachers of her school, she is more fanatical about her religion-cricket-than even the school cricket captain. It is a love story but a very crazy one.? The film is produced by PNC (Prit...
Timing of the selection was wrong: Anil Kumble
2008-01-23 09:28:00 ADELAIDE: Indian skipper Anil Kumble on Wednesday admitted that the timing of announcing the one-day side was far from 'ideal' but hoped his axed senior players would shrug off the disappointment to stay focussed for the crucial fourth Test against Australia, starting here on Thursday."(The selection) is not in their hands. I have gone through it, it's not ideal (the announcement of the team before the Test) but that's the way. It's a bit disappointing."It's not easy on senior players, having said that we would keep our focus on this Test," the ace leg spinner said. Kumble said the senior players were mature enough to take the exclusion in their stride."It's a challenge (to get them around). People (not selected) would be disappointed but they have played enough cricket to understand, why this (Test) is important for Indian cricket and to stay in the series," he said.Shockingly Sourav Ganguly, and to a lesser extent Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have been left out of the one...

A World Record for Anil Kumble 600 Wickets
2008-01-18 18:07:00 Perth: When ace leg-spinner Anil Kumble caught Australia's Shaun Tait off his own bowling in the third Test here on Thursday, he set a world record for the most "caught and bowled' dismissals - the 32nd instance in his 124th Test.Captain Kumble, who captured two wickets in Australia's first innings on the second day of the match, broke the record of Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who had caught batsmen 31 times off his own bowling.Kumble ? The man who loves to prove critics wrong Congratulate a legendKumble earlier in the day had become only the third bowler after Muralitharan and retired Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne to take 600 wickets when he dismissed Andrew Symonds.Kumble also became the second fastest to 600 in Test annals, after Muralitharan, who required 101 matches to get there. Warne, on the other hand, had taken 124 Tests to 600.Only Muralitharan (734 wickets in 118 Tests) and Shane Warne (708 in 145) are ahead of Kumble in the wicket-takers' list.F...
Anil Kumble says Australia triggered crisis
2008-01-11 05:47:00 In an exclusive article, the India captain writes that Australia started the teams' row by showing a disregard for the spirit of the game.I would like to begin by pointing out that someone [Michael Clarke] clearly edged the ball to the slips in the second innings of the Sydney Test and stood there even when there was not an iota of doubt over the dismissal. The same player then claimed a catch that showed more than reasonable doubt and said he was 100 per cent certain it was clean. At this point, a few days before the Test in Perth, I can tell you that that sort of behaviour will play a big role in my decision whether to continue the agreement that Ricky and I had made before the series began. We had decided that in the case of a disputed catch we would take the word of the fielder concerned, if he was certain. But that agreement was based on the premise that, come what may, whatever the situation, the fielder concerned would be completely straight on what happened. Now, there will...

Day 1 - India breaks Pakistan but fails to nail them
2007-11-22 17:14:00 Detailed Scorecard My first sight of the test match between India and Pakistan at the Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi, was a bit of a shock. Anil Kumble becomes the new Indian test captain
2007-11-10 09:02:00 BCCI has appointed the 37-year old Anil Kumble as the new Indian test captain for the coming three match test series against Pakistan. Kumble has already retired from ODI cricket and has played 118 test matches. There are very few cricketers who has become captain of a team after playing so many matches. Also, India is having separate captains in ODI and tests for the first time.Kumble has taken 566 wickets in tests in 118 matches. Kumble is currently the third highest wicket-taker in test cricket. The other candidates for the list of test captain were Mahendra Singh Dhoni, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar had already declined to be Indian captain saying it is deserved by a young one. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the most probable one as he is already the ODI captain. I think VVS Laxman is player who has not got proper respect in the team and his abilities are not respected. He really deserves to be in the team in test as well as ODI he should have been ...
Cricket-Indian Test Series Captain-Anil Kumble
2007-11-09 13:58:00 Anil Kumble has been named India's new Test captain for the upcoming home series against Pakistan, putting an end to the prolonged speculations on the matter. The national selectors deliberated at length before deciding to opt for the 37-year-old Kumble ahead of ODI and Twenty20 skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni who was widely tipped to get the reins of the Test team as well. The announcement was made by the BCCI Joint Secretary M P Pandove, just a few minutes before midnight and the Chairman of the Selection Committee Dilip Vengsarkar was not present to take queries from the media. A top BCCI source said that the experienced Kumble was preferred ahead of Dhoni because the selectors felt that Test captaincy would put a lot of pressure on the Jharkhand youngster, who also has the responsibility of keeping wickets. The selectors were put in a dilemma after Sachin Tendulkar, who was tipped to be the captain of the Test team, turned down the offer two days back ...
