The Animal Kingdom at Disney Celebrates the 10-Year Anniversary of Its Ope
2008-05-04 19:14:00
When it comes to Disney, you can’t help but think of the king of the jungle.  Walt Disney’s Animal Kingdom offers a rare glimpse into the lives of many animals.  This massive park was build in 1998 with the utmost care and conservation effort. They recently celebrated the 10-Year anniversary of their inauguration.  The 500 acre park is five times the size of the Magic Kingdom and reportedly cost Disney $800 million to build.  It is also the largest single Disney theme park in the world!  Here are a few things I bet you didn’t know about this family-friendly park: The first animals to inhabit the Animal Kingdom were giraffes and gorillas. The "Iconic Tree of Life" is based on the design and structure of an oil rig.  The tree has more than 10,000 leaves and 325 animal carvings The opening of the Animal Park was celebrated in conjunction with an increase in ticket prices for Disney World.  One adult admission cost $44.52 1...

2008-02-19 02:37:00
There are bound to be a lot of happy Disney Vacation Club members - as the first phase of the Animal Kingdom Villas is now complete. The villas (109 in all) were constructed from the upper levels of the Animal Kingdom Lodge. According to the Orlando Sentinel: "Construction is continuing on the project's much-larger second phase: A 340-unit annex next to the lodge that has been dubbed "Kidani Village." Disney says the expansion will include a 120-seat sit-down restaurant, a 4,700-square-foot swimming pool with a water slide and two spas, plus tennis, shuffleboard and half-court basketball, among other amenities."This phase should be completed in Spring of 2009. The Animal Kingdom Villas are the 8th timeshare property, and the 6th one at Walt Disney World. Disney is also building one at the Contemporary Resort (not confirmed yet by Disney - but discovered via building construction records), some at Disneyland and one in Hawaii. Kilimanjaro Safari Fire at Animal Kingdom
2008-02-12 02:00:00
Quite a day of excitement at Walt Disney's Animal Kingdom on Sunday, as one of the safari trucks caught on fire! According to the Orlando Sentinel, the attraction reopened on time this morning after a truck engine fire closed the ride Sunday afternoon. Yikes! The fire was caused by a damaged engine hose. The visitors were evacuated and one 8-year-old girl reportedly injured a knee while exiting the safari vehicle. Three others were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The fire caused the truck to break down in an area that did not have any animals. Good thing it didn't head off course and get stuck with the lions :)Read more on the Orlando Sentinel - also check out the AWESOME video of the ride on the same page.--- Disney Dean

Bad Mothers of the Animal Kingdom - Pigs
2007-12-06 17:18:00
I might have to stop doing these posts, because this one just freaked me out.  Mother pigs eat their young.  You heard me. They just eat the piglets right up, like unprocessed bacon. Farmers estimate that up to half of all piglet deaths are because of the mother eating them. Now, I know we have some human mommas ...

Animal Kingdom
2007-06-08 06:03:00
Do you ever get tired of funny stuff about animals? My files were bulging, so I sorted and now I have files on cats, dogs, big cats, squirrels, elephants, birds, insects, monkeys, and miscellanious little furballs. If you have any jokes or links for any of those, please send them to me! Still, my “animal links” file was left with a bunch of links that didn’t fit those categories, or they concerned different animal species. So I’ll throw those out for you today. If you want more animal humor, look through the Critters category.  This dominatrix duck has the dog wrapped around her little finger. Nibble on his ear and he’ll roll over like a puppy dog. Which only makes sense. (via Arbroath) There may be as few as 25 Borneo rhinos left in the world, making it one of the world's rarest animal species. The first still photograph of a Borneo rhino was taken only last year. Now, a World Wildlife Foundation project has captured ...
Sleep Champions Of The Animal Kingdom
2007-06-05 04:45:00
Although almost all animals and even plants have regular cycles of activity and inactivity, only mammals and birds seem to have the kind of sleep we experience, with its several stages, including Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep.Based on studies of animals in captivity, the world's champion sleeper appears to be the two-toed sloth, logging a total of 20 hours every 24-hour day. That's truly slothful compared to the elephant, which may sleep as little as three hours a day. Why the difference? One reason may be that in its natural habitat the sloth slumbers in the treetops, relatively safe from danger, while the elephant must be always alert for big cats lurking in the grasslands. Matching the elephant in wakefulness is the giraffe, followed by such creatures as the horse, sheep, cow, and guinea pig.Man and mole tie at eight hours of sleep. Opossums and armadillos fall just short of the sloth's 20 hours, while hamsters, rats, spiny anteaters, jaguars, and pigs snooze for about half o...

New terror attacks from an old foe ? the Animal Kingdom
2007-02-07 15:41:02
Two terrifying news stories that may prompt this administration to launch a new branch of the War on Terror — the War on Animal Kingdom. The first terror attack was off the coast of Florida: FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — A crew aboard a shrimping boat were rescued after a group of bull sharks rammed and bit the vessel until it eventually sank off the Florida coast, according to an Associated Press report. Captain Roger Schmall said a group of sharks had been slamming into the Christy Nichole’s hull for four days. But then a 14-foot bull shark broke the boat’s tail shaft, leaving Schmall and his crew of two adrift about 100 miles off the coast. Schmall radioed for help, and another vessel picked the crew up about two hours later. Schmall remained aboard his ship to pump water out while the other boat pulled it back to land. He said it was working for a couple of hours, but the waves eventually took their toll on Schmall’s boat and the boat sank. The s...
