Fate Zero Anime, First Season
2012-01-29 22:52:00
There's Fate Zero, then there's the Fate Zero in my mind. Fate Zero is a prequel to the Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel about which I know and care nothing. I only care insofar as the Fate Zero anime was mostly introduction and exposition at this point, and I'm hoping it holds together as a series on its own. The story is relatively speaking, simple - 7 great heros/evildoers of the past are reincarnated with even greater powers than they actually had when they were merely men who achieved notable things, and they each have a master who wishes to find the Holy Grail to achieve some goal, selfish or otherwise. Who the heroes are, is the most interesting part of the series to me, and how their myths are rewritten to determine their powers. I was asked some weeks ago about my interest in the reincarnated heroes, as I've mentioned here in the past that myths are typically a good hook for me. Since these heroes aren't really connected to their past incarnations in any meaningful way,...
Revolutionary Girl Utena Anime Box Set - Volume 2, Disk 2 (English)
2012-01-12 22:20:00
Revolutionary Girl Utena, Volume 2, Disk 3 provides a whole lot of food for thought, doesn't it? So, first of all, let look at the final of the puppet duelists for the Black Rose, Nanami's henchchick,Keiko. Like Wakaba, Keiko's story hurts. It hurts, because she's not one of the beautiful people and not one of the chosen. She's a real person, with big gaping flaws, but we can't quite hate her, or dismiss her, as we might Tsuwabuki, precisely because, like Wakaba, her dreams are so mundane. Anyone might wish for a moment alone with their idol. It's a dream that is dull as dirt. As a result, when Nanami is horrible to Keiko, we feel it. When Yuuko and Aiko are horrible to her, it's especially unforgivable. And, at last, we reach the core of the Black Rose story, and the illusions with which Mikage has wrapped himself. The story, however one looks at it, is at best, creepy and self-serving. At worst, it's possible the single most depressing illusion in the entirety of the se...

K-ON! Anime, Volume 4 (English)
2011-12-23 14:29:00
My day started a little rough, so I thought that I more than deserved a moment to wallow in the pure fun of the K-ON! anime. Volume 4 was the perfect thing to put me in a good mood (although I think I'm a little tired of "Fuwa Fuwa Time" for a while...) In Volume 4, the girls perform for the second time at the school festival, and we learn that Yui's flakey-ness is a lifetime achievement. And we get two bonus episodes in which they spend some random winter days and perform their first show outside school. I've said it before, if you don't like K-ON!, there's nothing I can say to change you to suddenly liking it. If you do like it, there's nothing I can say that you haven't already thought for yourself. "Gosh, Yui's a flake," "Azusa's cute when she's all blushy," "Why has no one killled Ritsu yet?" "Why is Mugi not the Governor of Tokyo?"  I have no doubt that you've thought these things as well. Well...okay, maybe not the last thing. If you've thought anythin...
Top (?) Ten Yuri Anime of 2011
2011-12-18 19:27:00
I hate doing this list. Have I ever mentioned that? Yuri and anime don't mix well too often. The best Yuri manga will never, ever become anime and the anime that is popular that includes Yuri is so...blecch...most of the time. This year I give up. This isn't a top 10 list, it's 10 series of interest - for one reason or another - to the Okazu audience list. I'm not even saying they are Yuri series. It's just things that some Yuri fans might care about, or not. As always, feel free to tell me how wrong I am in the comments, you always do. (^_^)b 10. Koi Hime Musou - This is on the list to round it out to 10 and because there is a smidgen of Yuri in it. It sucked in every other way. 9. Sound of the Sky Yeah, there's pretty much no Yuri here that we didn't make up in our heads. So sue me. Moe fans liked it, wrote and drew lots of pictures and stories that paired characters up and it made them happy. So shut up with your sensible objections. 8. K-ON! Same as with So...
Revolutionary Girl Utena Anime Box Set - Volume 2, Disk 2 (English)
2011-12-13 23:02:00
Revolutionary Girl Utena, Volume 2, Disk 2. This is where it gets really good. Up to this point, the Black Rose arc has seemed superficially similar to the first arc. Kanae's rage against Anthy seems overreacting, but we really don't know much about Kanae or Anthy, and hey, we're all creeped out by the portrayal of psychoanalysis in the form of Mikage's Freudian elevator. And Kozue...we've written her off multiple times already. She's not jealous of Anthy, just of her brother. Bro-con, ho hum. But. Now. Shiori is here. Shiori, who sought to hurt Juri, to tarnish her shine, because she was too perfect, too shining. Oh yeah, fandom loves to hate Shiori. But look at it from her side for a moment. Haven't we all had a friend who is popular, talented, attractive and haven't we all wanted, just once, to be better than them in something? Remember this particular moment of jealousy and pain. It will be back. In the meantime, we suffer as Juri tortures herself over feelings ...
Revolutionary Girl Utena Anime Box Set - Volume 2, Disk 1 (English)
2011-11-29 22:45:00
The first episode of the first disk of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Volume 2, or what is commonly referred to as the Black Rose Arc, is that staple of long-running anime, the clip episode. Clip episodes became so common around the turn of the century, that in some infamous series, clip episodes were practically more common than actual story episodes. In this case, the clip episode is welcome. Not only does it highlight each duel from the Student Council Arc, (which gives us a chance to relive the duels and their wonderful background music) but it provides an apparently objective perspective of each duel, allowing us to understand the motivation behind the duel, behind any discussion of the End of the World, a World Egg or Revolutionizing the World or other important-sounding nonsense. The story of Nemuro Hall and the Mikage Seminar is set up, and we are quite suddenly dropped into a new, even more obscure arc than the last. Where the Student Council fights to possess Anthy, these new...
Great (Retro) Anime/Manga Gift Guide 2011 (English)
2011-11-25 16:00:00
I'm staring at my pile of to-watch and to-read anime and manga and I can't but help notice that there are a lot of familiar titles among the mix. And, as it's that time of year again, at which Americans decide what matching pen and pencil set to get their relatives, and otaku Americans decide what anime or manga they should buy to indoctrinate their younger family members, I had a thought. This year, I'm specifically suggesting anime and manga that were awesome and wonderful a decade or more ago and are just as wonderful, now that they are available again. These will all make perfect family watching/reading to brainwash educate your young family members in the ways of anime and manga fandom. And, possibly create a new Okazu reader or two. ^_^ Princess Knight - This is as close to a kernel as we have in America for the concept of "shoujo manga." And, not at all coincidentally, Sapphire is the inspiration for many of our favorite cross-dressing, sword-wielding heroines, La...
Last Exile: Fam the Silver Wing Anime, Guest Post by Felix (English)
2011-11-24 02:15:00
It's Guest Post Wednesday! Today we have an exciting post, from long-time Okazu reader and commenter Felix! We're very excited to have Felix join out Guest Reviewer community. Please extend a welcome hand and thank to Felix! Last Exile, Fam the Silver Wing is the story of three girls, each of 15 years of age: Fam Fan Fan, sky pirate and fantastic vespa pilot, Giselle Collette, Fam?s genius navigator and closest friend (whom Fam calls "Gisey"), and the girl they meet, the young princess of the Kingdom of Turan, Millia il Velch Curettola Turan. This is the story of how Fam decides to steal a battleship from the middle of battle, save a princess, and embark on a quest to help Millia save her beloved older sister and their kingdom from the conquering Ades Federation. This story also involves a legend, how once long ago humans left a dying earth but one day returned. The legend of the Exile... When I was first writing this review, I was thinking of doing a detailed synopsis of the f...
K-ON! Anime, Volume 2 (English)
2011-11-20 23:00:00
Although I already reviewed Volume 3 of the K-ON! anime, I finally had time to sit down and enjoy the supersonic movement of the year with the girls in K-ON!, Volume 2. From their first school festival, (and getting Sawako-sensei as their faculty advisor,) to a whole new school year and a new member, all in a few short episodes. I love the gags about Sawako-sensei's years in the Light Music Club. Something about the idea that she was once a heavy metal rocker cracks me up. For fans of the series, the important point of this volume is the appearance of Azusa, her experience seeing the Light Music Club the very first time and being totally blown away. And, really, who wouldn't be? They are ridiculously cute and their music is fun and goofy. As for Yuri, other than the relationships fans have made up in their head...there is none. And that's okay by me, honestly. This series works best when it's about a bunch of friends in a band. Ratings: Art- 7 Story - 8 Characters - 8 Yuri ...
Shin Koihime Muso The Complete Collection Anime, Disk 2 (English)
2011-11-16 21:38:00
Is it worse when Disk 2 of Shin Koihime Muso digresses into an entire episode of Bachou needing to go to the bathroom or attempts to actually deal with Ryuubi's ragtag army of heroes defeating the Yellow Turban revolt...with a sing-off? Honestly, I don't know. Ratings: Art - 6 Story - 6 Characters - Everytime I watch this series, the statue of Guan Yu we have here, his eyes get all cold and menacing...shudder. Yuri - Sousou and her various adoring henchicks Loser FanBoy - I've started to think differently about this series. I want to believe that there are remarkably few people who find this all sexy, and more who simply find it amusing. Overall - 2, except for bits here and there that get up as high as 5. The important thing is, that Shin Koihime Musou ~ Otome Tairan is actually better, at least in my memory.
Yuri Anime: Shin Koihime Muso (English), Disk 1

In 1951, photographer Ruth Orkin had an idea for a photograph. When she met student Jinx Allen, she knew she had found her model. The resulting photograph "American Girl in Italy" is now iconic. (For the full story of this photo, read An Image of Innocence Abroad from Smithsonian Magazine.) Take a look at this photo. Click it to see it as large as you can. Note the look on the woman's face. Does it look pained, concerned? Scared? Now look at the men around her. Note them staring openly at her, with what they probably think is admiration. Women readers - how does this picture make you feel? Men, how about you? The feeling I get upon viewing this picture is the same feeling I feel when I watch Shin Koihime Muso. It makes me cringe. There is Yuri in Shin Koihime Musou. Sousou only takes women to bed, she's got the hots for Kanu. Kakuka lusts after Sousou. But that doesn't change the fact that there are people out there getting turned on by the excruciating ...
Mawaru Penguindrum (????????) Anime
2011-10-30 20:10:00
Three young people - a sickly sister, Himari, and her two older bothers, Kanba and Shouma, who love and adore her, find themselves cast into a spiral of ever-weirdening events when Himawari dies in the hospital. A bizarre hat confers life and power to Himari, elaborately transforming her into...well, we're still not sure who she is now.... Shouma and Kanba are required by this entity to find the "Penguindrum." The story of what the Penguindrum is, and why it is important, is the entirety of the plot and I refuse to attempt to simplify it for this review. ^_^  The quest for the Penguindrum involves Shouma's classmate Ringo, Ringo's late older sister Momoka, a teacher in Shouma and Kanba's school, and his wife, Takarisienne (or something awfully similar) Yuri. If you are among those who find Mawaru Penguindrum (????????) confusing, please take a moment to read this post first. The Tl;dr version is - read more. You will learn allegory, symbolism and how to follow an non-line...
Yuri Anime: Yuru Yuri Guest Review by C. Banana (English)
2011-09-30 20:10:00
One of the great joys for me as curator here at Okazu, is when our readers escalate into advocates and reviewers in their own right. It's been my pleasure on multiple occasions to present to you reviews by readers who have decided to commit themselves to a higher level of engagement. Today's Guest Review is especially wonderful, as it was written by long-time Okazu reader and commenter, C. Banana, someone whose views rarely match mine, but whose perspective I appreciate.  CB is writing about Yuru Yuri, a slice-of-life anime available legally and for free on Crunchyroll. As the first "Yuri" anime from Ichijinsha (publisher of Comic Yuri Hime magazine) this is a significant anime for Yuri fans. The story is a very understated "wacky adventures of four girls goofing off."  As this was a series I myself did not enjoy, CB offered to step up and write a review for us. Please welcome our newest Guest Reviewer with all the warmth I expect from the Okazu audience! Ah, the...
K-On! Anime, Volume 3 (English)
2011-09-29 00:27:00
(I apparently never watched or reviewed Volume 2 of this series. Woops. I'll do that asap.) Summer has arrived for the girls in K-ON!, Volume 3 and, with the arrival of new recruit Azusa, they get to relive all the same moments of their first summer together over again! And then there's wacky old Yui, who still knows nothing at all about her guitar. Hee Hee. And let's never stop mentioning Mio's underwear, shall we? Don't get me wrong, I love watching the band goofing off, not practicing, playing ball on the beach, etc, etc, but storywise, you have to admit, it does look a lot like the same episodes over again at this point. The big difference is this time they get a band name at the end of it. Once again, I did not watching the dub, as I never do, nor did I listen to the interview with Ritsu's dub actress. I did watch the English dub version of "My Love is A Stapler," which my wife and I both thought sounded like a high school girl singing a song, so A for verisimilitude,...

Taisho Baseball Girls Anime, Disk 2 (English)
2011-01-12 01:43:00
Taisho Baseball Girls is a story about girls playing baseball. Not just "playing baseball," playing hardball with the boys - and forcing them to take them seriously because they can play the game. This a great anime that makes me smile for any number of reasons. I smiled with admiration at the effort they put in to training in a sport they've come to live and love. I smiled gently when Koume thought she was going to be a movie star, I smiled with nostalgia when they had a pillow fight and I smiled like a wolf when Akiko pitched a mean sinker. I've spoken to a lot of folks recently about the Nanoha franchise and most of us feel that it's a fantastic series wrapped in a layer of pandering. The Nanoha series is, in a nutshell, about a bunch of girls working *really* hard to become the very best at what they do, not holding anything back and indeed becoming some of the best in the world. In Taisho Baseball Girls, the girls will not be among the best, but they still are shown workin...
Taisho Baseball Girls Anime, Disk One (English)
2010-12-31 16:26:00
"If you're amused by our lack of experience, that's one thing and I can't do anything about that, but if it's that fact that we're women that amuses you, that I will not sit still for!" If you have ever wanted Japanese women to speak up for themselves, then you really must watch Taisho Baseball Girls. The plot is a simple one. In the beginning of the 20th century, Japan was embracing Western culture with some fervor. Western clothes, sports, vehicles, cuisine took on more than just a new and exotic flavor - they became emblematic of Japan's appearance on the international stage. A young woman, totally dissed by her fiancée', and not at all pleased with his antiquated notion of what a woman's role was supposed to be, decides to fight him on his own turf - the baseball diamond. Akiko decides that she will form and field a baseball team of...shock!...girls!...to combat this grotesque display of sexism. And, slowly, piece by piece, she does. In this, she is joined by her frie...

Shattered Angels Anime, Disk 2 (English)
2010-09-28 22:49:00
Disk 2 picks up the story in a state of complete chaos. Everything the Ayanokojis are attempting to do is falling apart. Their Angels are disobeying them because of crises brought on by personal feelings and Kyoshiro, the most idealistic of them, is falling in love with Kuu. For viewers, this means a lot of bouncing around between the Ayanokojis and lots of pointless fights and screaming. And sort-of love scenes. And talking. God, do they all talk. Everything comes to a kind of climax when the missing Ayanokoji, Kazuya, returns, with his own Angel (voiced by Ogata Megumi, using her UFO Princess Valkyrie Val voice.) Everything Kyoshiro believed in is crushed under Kazuya's heel in a scene I love with all my heart. I absolutely, genuinely believe that the scene that makes me love this series best is the moment Kyoshiro greets his long-lost, thought-to-be-dead brother Kazuya once again...and has his head pounded into the ground for his efforts. Kazuya turns out to indeed be as craz...
Shattered Angels Anime, Disk 1 (English)
2010-09-27 22:22:00
On Disk 1 of Shattered Angels, we are introduced to the aptly named Kuu (? means "empty" in Japanese, among other things,) an average highschool girl in a not-at-all average world, in which there are many schools and students, but no apparent teachers. Kuu has a childhood dream of a prince with red hair taking her away, so when a red-haired "prince" by the name of Ayanokoji Kyoshiro arrives she, like the other female students in the school, is thrilled. But when she mets him for the first time, the "Prince" rips Kuu's shirt open, *then* asks her to come with him. Sensibly, she runs away crying. (I commented to Bruce at this point, "I think he got that the wrong way 'round.") And then all hell breaks lose as giant robot arms and legs fight in and around the school, reducing it to rubble and forcing Kuu and Kyoshiro to run away from....? Ultimately, Kuu and we learn of the existence of "Absolute Angels," creatures that look like girls, but actually contain within them tremend...
OMG! Am I reading this right?
2010-07-03 07:47:00
Did Funimation actually announce that they licensed Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei, and Texhnolyze? Yeah, I already have these from the now defunct Geneon USA, but it's really good to know that these ABe series are being revived! Funimation also announced that they picked up other shows that might interest people like Black Lagoon Season 3, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, Toaru Majutsu no Index, and Hellsing1. Now if only someone rescues Someday's Dreamers and picks up the second season, Someday's Dreamers: Summer Skies. 1. I'm personally interested in picking up the first three of these

Looky looky what I have! You can read me fanboying all over the Promise CD on twitter, if you choose, but yeah, the CD has some very good "reimagings" of some very familiar music. The 5 Centimeters Per Second Blu-ray was something I've planned to get for some time, and the Sora no Woto OST CD was the trigger for me to make the order off of cdjapan.
Music, CDJapan, and First Episode Impressions
2010-04-06 05:21:00
Sora no Woto music I've been making this claim elsewhere, and it might just be me, but parts of the Sora no Woto soundtrack really reminded me of George Gershwin's An American in Paris. I'm no music expert, but compare the following: Sora no Woto OST - Track 2 - Ciel bleu and Sora no Woto OST - Track 3 - Flànerie with Gershwin: American in Paris (I) (Rattle, Berlin Phil) Maybe I'm crazy though. Then again, previewing the Sora no Woto soundtrack convinced me to import the OST from cdjapan1. But I wonder, are these tracks really original to the series? And which orchestra performed them? First Episode Impressions I had watched the first episodes of a few series. Here's some quick impressions of them: Angel Beats! I'm not fully sure what to make of Angel Beats!. So far I get that this is some afterlife where it seems people cannot die, though people can still feel pain and will be out for a spell i...

Stan Lee and Heroman
2010-03-29 23:11:00
I'm not seeing much press about this series, but I am personally curious about the upcoming Heroman anime. The original story was created by Stan Lee1, and I'd like to try out his take on the "Boy discovers/builds a giant robot" genre. I was going to pick up the manga to check it out, but now I'd rather see the anime; BONES' work on it looks pretty slick as usual, as can be seen in the trailer floating around: I'll probably give the first episode a look (as with several of the other anime series coming out this season). UPDATE: Looks like Heroman will be simulcast by Crunchyroll an hour after the Japanese premiere. Too bad there won't be any easy way for me to watch that simulcast on my main TV2; I'd be open to paying for a premium subscription if I could do so. 1. for those that don't know and too lazy to click on Stan Lee's name to go to his Wikipedia page, the one of the original co-creators of Marvel titles like Spiderman or the X-Men 2. Anime on Netflix Streaming
2010-03-29 19:56:00
Author, during a post about Netflix halting streaming of several anime titles, recalled that I had watched Kurau on there, and he's right. I had also watched Noein through the Netflix streaming service, and I ended picking up both series and their artboxes during one of Rightstuf's 25 DVDs for 100$ sales. In truth, I had never used my computer to watch Netflix streaming video, but I have a Samsung Blu-ray player that can also do the Netflix streaming straight to my main A/V stack. Much more enjoyable from the couch on my 40" screen1 than cooped up on my computer chair on my 22" screen. That said, of the following: We really need another DTO challenger like BOST (R.I.P.). I agree 100%. 1. which is the Samsung LN40B550 shown in the image above; yes I do need to clean up...

The Makoto Shinkai fan site Cherry Blossoms Falling, is celebrating the event with contests, forum discussions and a live Shoutcast. Contests will be held for inspired fan-made works in art, AMV, film and essay. This year?s prizes are Makoto Shinkai autographed movie posters from his most recent film, 5 Centimeters Per Second. Crunchyroll.com will be hosting the films for free, for a 48-hour period ...
Another Anime from The Twelve Kingdoms Fuyumi Ono
2009-12-19 05:00:00
Fuyumi Ono is best known to me as the original writer for The Twelve Kingdoms, the series that really got me seriously watching anime and laid the foundation for me to discover Haibane Renmei and Berserk1 I had discovered the anime adaptation of Ono's Ghost Hunt and enjoyed the heck out of it. It doesn't have the epic scope that The Twelve Kingdoms had2, but Ghost Hunt did feature some great characters and some really memorable scare moments3. In the end, I liked the hell out of it, even if it didn't get "top ten" rating. Well, just got news today that another manga that Fuyumi Ono written the original novel for has been green lit to be adapted into an anime: The official website for the anime adaptation of Fuyumi Ono and Ryu Fujisaki's Shiki horror mystery manga has opened — thus revealing that the anime has been green-lit. The story revolves around an isolated mountain village, steeped in ancient traditions, whose population of 1,300 starts dying in droves due to mysteri...

Yawara, A Fashionable Judo Girl Anime, Volume 1 (English)
2009-11-29 20:55:00
It's that ole classic love-hate rivalry. A mean, self-centered, usually at least borderline psychotic person, has their worldview shattered by a rival they cannot control through money or power or sheer force of will. Typically, the hero/ine is wholly unaware of their "rival's" feelings. Often they are unaware that they have a rival at all. No, the strong emotions live one-sidedly in the teeny little obsessive heart of the evil rival. Let's face it, A-ko never gives B-ko a second thought. In Yawara, A Fashionable Judo Girl, Inokuma Yawara is uninterested in her rival, Ho'onami Sayaka - indeed, she's largely unaware of her until Sayaka makes her presence un-ignorable. For old-school Yuri (and Yaoi) fans, this kind of relationship is full of nostalgia. Before we had actual GL and BL couples, we had this. And that was pretty much it. So, for a lot of reasons, slipping Volume 1 of Yawara into my DVD player was pretty nostalgic. That, and seeing AnimEigo's logo being rained o...
New Anime Season Autumn 2009: Shin Koihime Musou
2009-11-19 22:31:00
Quick, name an all-female anime/manga version of the Chinese Epic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. No, wait - quick, name three. Last year we were 'treated' to Koihime Musou, one of several gender switch versions of the historical epic Romance. This year we have the debatable pleasure of a sequel, Shin Koihime Musou, currently streaming on Crunchyroll. The sequel begins with the appearance of the real Ryuubi since, as you may remember from last season the guy we thought was Ryuubi was not. The real Ryuubi is a bit of a ditz, but is, of the entire cast, probably the most sane. Having thus met the third of their triad, Kanu and Chohi renew their vow of sisterhood, just in case we forget the whole vow under the peach tree thing. The three, and a few of the others head off to something something which in this case is get Ryuubi's sword back, have adventures and eat - a lot. An inordinate amount of time is spent watching the travelers eat. In the meantime, the story veers off to...

Yuri Anime: Saki, Mid-season review
2009-09-21 23:22:00
Saki, we need to talk. It's nothing bad, really, it's just ... I'll be honest. I wasn't sure that we'd get along at first. You seemed to be too fake-cutesy, with those ridiculous ever-blushing cheeks, but always flashing your legs at me. It was a creepy mixed signal thing that got on my nerves. And Nodoka, always bouncing her big chest like that....I thought, can you both really be so innocent as you're gazing into each other's eyes longingly? But fine, I set that aside. Then you really started taking off. You let your innate abilities show, like you were finally free to be yourself. Sure, I noticed a few things, like the way you suddenly throw your ass into my face, dress up to please the guys in bathing suits, yukata and maid costumes all while you're looking at Nodoka so intensely. It kind of freaks me out. Like, pick one, okay? Can you not be the G-rated version of Girls Gone Wild? But I know that's not really your fault. You just want to get ahead in the world and t...
Time of Eve Ends
2009-09-20 06:56:00
Just finished Time of Eve, and though I am trying to temper my usual enthusiasm and usually wait a bit before posting about a series I really enjoyed, I just can't resist on this one. Consisting of six episodes clocking in around 15 to 17.5 minutes each (with the finale going 27 minutes and 44 seconds), Yasuhiro Yoshiura delivers a series that is hard to really find faults with1, is very thought-provoking, and features some excellent animation and well though-out camera work. I really want to collect this series on Bluray or DVD2. As it were, I did purchase each episode off of crunchyroll as they became available, mainly to have a copy that I can watch on the main entertainment setup rather than having to watch the stream on the computer. At this point, I consider Yasuhiro Yoshiura as a story-writer and anime director superior to Makoto Shinkai. 1. The biggest one being that it took 1 to 2 months between episodes, but considering the small team, they put out a very high quality...
Needless, Anime and Manga
2009-09-15 23:35:00
A little over a year ago, I began getting Ultra Jump magazine, when Hayate Cross Blade moved to there from its former home. One of the other series in the magazine was the manga Needless and, being the manga omnivore I am, I gave it a try. I picked it up in the middle of a fight between a bunch of girls, whose underwear the reader was shown repeatedly and a buxom woman with evil eyebrows, whose cleavage the reader spent a lot of time looking down. There were two older guys with silly facial hair, a bunch of people in the background and a lot of screaming. Now, about 14 months later, Needless is still in the middle of the very same battle, with the very same characters in the same locations and lots of screaming. So, when the anime was announced, you can bet I had no expectations. And so far, I've been right on with that. :-) In a post-apocalyptic setting, Needless is the name given to people with special powers who spend most of the series yelling and fighting. The story is su...
New Anime Season Summer 2009: Canaan
2009-08-26 21:00:00
TYPE-MOON and I are not mortal enemies or anything. It's not like I hate their work, nor do I seek it out. I read Gunslinger Girl when I was reading Dengeki Daioh, but was never really grabbed by it. Nor was Fate/Stay Night created for me. I'm not a gamer at all and the anime was based on a game I will never play. They aren't staying up night worrying what I think and I'm not staying up nights thinking about them. :-)But as you know, I *do* like hypercompetent women with guns, so when I heard about Canaan, it immediately went onto my "to-watch" list. And I have not been disappointed at all.In short, Canaan is a live action series done as an anime. War has carved a swath of destruction through multiple lives in this series. Loss of lives, of self, of their past, of their future, friends, family, whole villages have been destroyed. At the center of the battle is a virulent virus, and two women with inhuman skills that share a name... Canaan. The linchpin of this series is a Japanes...
Berserk Rumors Abound
2009-08-20 22:42:00
Quite a bit of news going around about this violent series by Kentarou Miura, which was adapted into an anime series in 1997. First is the news of a possible hollywood adaptation (along with Garefoot Gen and Baki the Grappler). Now there are rumors of a new Berserk anime series made by Studio 4?, including leaked images! Sankaku Complex has more information in English, though the site is NSFW. Good days indeed.
New Anime Season Summer 2009: Taisho Yakyuu Musume
2009-08-20 21:00:00
You know what the Japanese national sport is, right? Oh, sure, Sumo is usually given the place of honor, but really, Japan is absolutely, passionately crazy in love with...baseball.There are a ton of baseball manga in Japan and Major, a baseball anime/manga franchise, has not one but two anime series on Japanese TV. (One follows the older brother and one follows the younger brother.)It's true that few of the loads of sports anime and manga ever make it over here. There's all sorts of theories why, but I wager it's a pretty simple thing - soccer is not as exotic as ninjas. If American otaku are interested in soccer, they'd play or watch soccer. One of things that appeals about being an otaku is the exotic-ness of the "other." Ninjas are exotic, service is titillating and lacking from teen literature here and Japan is...Japanese. It is ostensibly not America, or Europe or wherever you are from. Soccer is normal. It's right out the window. Baseball is what your /insert baseball-o...
Digging the (Anime/Manga) Twitter Scene
2009-08-02 21:44:00
If you look on the right-hand sidebar of this blog, you will see a number of links that lead you to social media spaces of varying kinds. Yuricon on Facebook, my profile on Mixi, the Yuricon Mailing List and a number of other spaces. Today I want to talk about Twitter.Yuricon on Twitter is a bit of a mixed fruit crepe. In the AM, I tend to focus on Business, and in the evening I switch over to my jaunty Yuri anime and manga cap. In between I sprinkle a helping of LGBT issues for flavor. So far, no one has complained about the multi-tweeting. In fact, it has worked nicely to get Yuri into the hands of Twittering Lesbians, and LGBT issues on the plates of Anime/Manga fans. And then there's the Social Media piece. It fills my every tweet, really. I explain the hows and whys of social media, the whos and where and like so many others, the don'ts. As you may remember, last December I opened Yurikon LLC, the promotion company behind Yuricon & ALC Publishing, for business as a social med...
Aria the Natural, Part 2 Anime (English)
2009-07-29 21:00:00
Squeezing Yuri from Aria the Natural, Part 2 is like making an essential oil from a rose petal. It's a lot of work, takes a lot of petals and, in the end, what you have is a beautiful, but ephemeral scent. Which is not to say that it's not worth your time. Like a rose, Aria the Natural, has a timeless beauty. And like the rose, Aria provides a lovely atmosphere. And...if you are a fan of Aria or Okazu, you've seen this coming since the first simile...it is ironically the Crimson Rose of Aria herself, Akira, that provides one of those essential moments. The little bit of Yuri, should you wish to don my super high-powered UBER-YURI Goggles (go ahead, the world looks lovely in lavender) is provided by the early butchiness of Akira who, as you know, I think is totally gay for Alicia. Because I *want* her to be. :-) Her badass tomboyishness makes my day every time. I'm also sure that, at the very end, the akogare Akari has for Alicia is laid on thickly enough for folks who want to se...

New Anime Season Summer 2009: Yuri Anime: Kanamemo (English)
2009-07-14 03:20:00
We've talked about how similar 4-koma comics are to each other many times. They are usually slice of life, perhaps at a school, in a club, a bunch of friends, all hangingoutandbeingsilly. Life, you know.Well, Kanamemo isn't like that. It has a rather depressing set up, as it happens. Kana's parents had passed away when she was young and she was living with her grandmother until she also passed away, leaving Kana alone. So alone, in fact, that not a single adult, government agency or busybody neighbor even notices that she's got to go somewhere. As the movers begin to take her grandmother's items, it struck me as odd that whoever was in charge of the funeral thought to get the old lady's personal items cleaned up, but somehow forgot to find somewhere to put her *granddaughter.* When Kana panics and runs off with only a rucksack, she finds, after much travail, a live-in position with a newspaper delivery office populated by 4 adults, an elementary school girl for an office chief...

New Anime Season Summer 2009: Yuri Anime: Aoi Hana
2009-07-03 02:55:00
If you are not familiar with Aoi Hana check out my review of Volume 1 of the Aoi Hana manga (or if you want the story through Volume 3, check the Aoi Hana category on the sidebar. Today we're just going to talk anime.Crunchyroll launched this anime with no fanfare - in fact, with barely even a blip on the radar. No press release, no time to build anticipation. But, there it was, with 6 hours to go before it launched on Japanese TV at some gawdforsaken hour, a simulcast in CR was announced to be shown one hour later. You can still catch that first episode, of course. Check out the CR Aoi Hana page for available episodes.Rumors about this production were pretty rampant. The voice cast is newcomers to the field, maybe Ikuhara Kunihiko (of Revolutionary Girl Utena fame) might be animating the opening sequence. In fact, he did and it's quite lovely and although they are relatively new names to the seiyuu world, the skill and professionalism of the voice actresses was top notch. So, the ...

My-Zhime (My Otome) Zwei Anime
2009-06-26 20:11:00
It is just after the end of the My Otome TV series, and Arika is a hero, but things aren't any easier for her. School is still tough, she and Mashiro have a fight and are separated and, just to make sure that nothing is easy, a new, powerful bad guy appears. Welcome to My Zhime Zwei.Sensibly, the bad guy takes out all the powerful, cool Otome first, leaving all the smaller fry (and not coincidentally, our heroines Arika and Nina) to take them on and win the day for all. Really, there's never even the remotestst concern that Good and Right won't win. If you're hoping for something like that, you're totally watching the wrong franchise. :-)Because of the relative intelligence of the baddy, Shizur and Natsuki are apart for the bulk of this series. Aoi and Chie have little time together, hardly sharing a panel. So for Yuri, we have to turn our attentions to the far more amusing comedy couple Brigadier Haruka Armitage and her President, Yukino Chrysant of Aries. In episode two they ...
