Could Tiger Woods' win at ATT foretell problems at the British Open?
2009-07-13 22:17:00 Click here to listen.Tiger Woods has made it a habit to win two weeks before a major tournament this season. He won Palmer's, Nicklaus' and his own event in this fashion and, because of this, fans are waiting to see if this streak will cause him to falter during the third major of the year.Is it possible that Tiger Woods could fall prey to the "middle of the pack" at the British Open?Prior to the 2009 Masters, Angel Cabrera's best finish this year was a tie for thirteenth at the Northern Trust Open. He was cut from the Arnold Palmer Invitational where Tiger Woods solidly annihilated the competition. Cabrera's stats are also not that impressive: he currently ranks 187th in driving accuracy and only 140th in greens-in-regulation. It is only because of his major win that Cabrera now ranks twentieth in money leaders on the PGA Tour.Golf afficionados can now say that they have heard of Lucas Glover but, prior to a strong 2009 season and a win at the U.S. Open, Glover had only two to...
Wie versus Sorenstam: which brand would you buy? Extreme golf experiences,
2009-03-31 16:17:00 Click here to listen.Branding a product is supposed to personify the qualities inherent in the celebrity whose name is on the package. Tiger Woods' name, for example, has been chosen not only because he is a champion but because he is credible, likeable and probably the most visible person on the planet. Woods basically embodies all of the most sincere qualities of golf while, at the same time, adding a youthful "hip-ness" to any product he endorses. Annika Sorenstam, although presently retired from golf and expecting a child, has decided to remain in the public eye by 'capturing her essence' in products from wine to perfume, all prominently displaying the moniker "Annika". "The scent will particularly appeal to golf enthusiasts, career-minded professionals and active, fashion-forward women," mentioned a press release. "Like Annika, the fragrance will be casually elegant and unpretentious." Sorenstam will be celebrated this week by the Golf Channel, which will include highlights ...

I believe so. Maybe not now but in the future." In order to familiarize China as a golf destination, Feng, in the final round this week, even wore a shirt with a red China map on it.Go China! The Empire is alive and well. The force is definitely with them.Don't underestimate the growth of golf in Korea and Japan either, two countries who are hosting the 'triple-play' of this month's venture into Asian territory. This past week, out of a sixty-three player field, two-thirds were of Asian descent with over fifty of the ladies appearing in the upper crust of the LPGA money list...

Will Annika Sorenstam need to do a Mexican hat dance to take the eyes off L
2007-03-09 04:58:05 Let me get straight to the point. Annika Sorenstam picked the wrong event for her LPGA season debut. Let's face it, the MasterCard Classic honoring Alejo Peralto is a tournament custom-made for Lorena Ochoa. Her fan base is in Mexico and she already won the Corona Morelia last year, earning the respect and accolades of her country and its citizens. Golf is a sport that is rising in popularity in Mexico and Ochoa is at its forefront. Sorenstam has taken her season opener five times (three in a row) but now must face off against Ochoa who is poised to steamroll over Karrie Webb and take top honors in the Rolex Rankings. True, Lorena has had her rookie "blips", snowmen coming down the stretch to sidewind her just at the moment of glory. But this year I see a different side to Lorena, one filled with confidence that won't allow her to be put off by a miserable eight. Although the season-openers in Hawaii were merely "okay" for Lorena (one top-five and one not worth mentioning), th...

Annika Sorenstam takes a publicity lesson from Michelle Wie
2006-12-02 15:58:02 While Lorena Ochoa struggles to grab player of the year honors on the LPGA tour, Annika Sorenstam has decided she likes the PGA "silly season" better, foregoing the Mitchell Company Tournament of Champions for a matchup against the men. Sorenstam and Fred Couples, known as the "king" of the post-season, have paired up for this week's Merrill Lynch Shootout. Normally this wouldn't catch my attention but it appears as if Annika is diversifying, stretching her legs after a terrific golf season and, perhaps, wondering if she can attract the same kind of media attention as PGA tour wannabee, uber-teen Michelle Wie. This is the first time that a lady has been invited to the shootout, staged by Aussie Greg Norman. I guess women golfers DO attract attention! Ticket sales are the highest in five years and officials attribute some of that interest to Annika's appearance. I guess "The Shark" feels differently about the silly season than he does about PGA tour-sanctioned events. Norman ha... |
