2007-12-09 18:12:00 Annuals: Frelen Mas EPAnnuals is one of those groups whose name had been hammered into my head but I never had really listened to them. The Frelen Mas EP is the electronically released follow up to their much hyped Be He Me debut.Like many of the blogosphere's favorite artists, Annuals is a combination between freak folk and avant garde experimentalism. Their music can easily be compared to the Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, or the Flaming Lips.If you've been a heavy reader of my blog, you know I have little to no love for those bands. Needless to say that leaves me with little to no love for Annuals.The albums second track "Run River Run" did catch my interest. It was poppy with a mild amount of avant garde, enough to satisfy Pitchfork. Annuals cover of the traditional "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" was another song that I enjoyed.Unfortunately those two track were really the only two tracks on the EP I actually liked. That's pretty good. I'm still loving how hard that drum hits too. Way to go Manchester Orchestra.The Annuals' effort is good too, though a little more electronic than I would have liked. If they polished it a little, and cut the last 45 seconds or so out, it would be a pretty epic track. 2007-11-14 00:00:00 by Josh TeixeiraFinishing up the last leg of their North American tour, Annuals and Manchester Orchestra have been bringing their intense style of melancholic indie rock to cities across the country for the last couple of months. Cool Hunting was lucky enough to catch their Halloween performance in New York City. Featuring two of the best bands of their ilk that we've heard in a long time, the show, replete with costumes and plenty of stage dramatics, was a memorable one. Manchester Orchestra's melodramatically confessional anthems left more than a few mouths agape, and "amazing" was heard uttered more than once as the crowd milled around after their set. Annuals' eclectic urgency refused to be belied by their zombie costumes, and proved an suitably haunting end to the night. Both bands are at the top of their game and are really redefining and reenergizing a well-established genre. If you're lucky enough to live in one of the cities left on their tour, do not miss out. 2007-09-26 15:04:00 Even though this song made it into a lofty 35th position on this site's top 42 of 2006 (won?t feel it until the 2007 version, am getting nervous as it hasn?t been a vintage year) I?ve never sought fit to spam about it until now. ?Brother? is the work of a group of multi-instrumental nippers lead by Adam Baker and at 3:43 is seems much too short to adequately advertise all the ideas being thrown about. Put this sort of work in the hands of say Do Make Say Think and you?d have a classy centrepiece yet Baker and Co. let it fade before it?s fully exploited. To be critical would be to try and knock a near masterpiece however. ?Brother? sits amongst its siblings on Annuals debut ?Be He Me? just like one of the family. The thrills may be hard won but they are frequently engaging. Given that Annuals are from Raleigh, North Carolina maybe you should be on your bike to pick up this album.
