VT Foliage, Antiques, Antiques, and Antiques . . .
2008-10-02 17:05:00 Two fall traditions in Vermont are foliage "leaf peeping" and antique shows. There are other activities as well this busy weekend so let's get started: (Quick aside: the weather this weekend will be very nice: mostly sunny and day time temperatures in the upper 50's F. The evenings will be cool with temperatures in the high 30's F. Bring some warm clothes especially if you plan to spend time at upper elevations.)FALL FOLIAGEThe next two to three weeks you can see some incredible color on the mountainsides and valleys. I have talked with a large number of people here and read in several VT blogs that this year's foliage display may be one of the best ever. I am very surprised at the large amount of red leaves I'm seeing. All the colors are bright. I'm sure we'll be talking about this year's Vermont foliage for years to come.A fun way to to see the foliage is to get out of the car and into the fresh air on a ski area chair lift. It's an exhilarating experience that you will r...

Chinese Antiques, China Today - Ancient Elegance, Now Brutal Bully
2008-05-12 07:00:00 Chinese antiques have long held fascination in the west. In fact, the oldest continually settled city in the world, Damascus, was for 7,000 years the natural western terminus of the fabled Silk Route to the Orient. Merchants from Egypt and north into modern Turkey or west into Greece would have gathered at Damascus, which had ...

Investing in Your Pantry and Bargain Antiques @ CNN Money and Yahoo! Financ
2008-04-25 22:06:00 At a great timing Brett Arends wrote a great article for the Wall Street Journal which was featured on Yahoo! Finance titled "Load Up the Pantry".She argues that as flour, rice, milk, eggs and more basic food prices sore investing your money in a stocked pantry is wiser than just letting it rot in a bank account maxing at 4%.The article provides additional background and some future predictions (in continuance to my post on the commodity and food prices) and makes for a very interesting and recommended read in my opinion.Another article with real added value was published at CNN Money and reveals "The best kept secrets of antique shoppers". This is a great post on a tightly closed, less familiar market. Apparently there are real bargains out there. This weekend The Personal Financier will feature the "Carnival of Investment Basics" and a weekly round-up as usual. Next week I'm planning on posting two great posts about fortifying our careers and on breaking the vicious circles of deb...

Chinese Antiques Brilliance, Coal Plants CO2 - Filters, or Hell on Earth
2008-04-15 07:00:00 From Chinese antiques history, the way we speak of carbon depends on which kind we relate to best. Geek Antiques
2008-04-11 15:17:00 Where is he gay today? Adamstown, PARight now, I?m looking at some toy furniture from 1959. The boxes are labelled Mattel Modern. The blub explains how this furniture suits those new-fangled, dressable 9-inch dolls. Not long after, one of those dolls went trash-glam. Her dream-furniture turned dream-pink, and she needed a dream-garage for her dream-campervan and dream-Corvette. As well, her dream-bed turned into a single, because she checked in her pal Ken's pants. The price tag reads a hefty $950 for the set. Elsewhere in this gigantic antique store (an old hat factory), you can buy the real thing for less.Master Right and I are partial to the odd antique. That?s why we chose to visit Adamstown, which bills itself as America?s Antique Capital. In a store like this, I generally riff through the old books while he scours the building for decorative arts. Alas, the town is a place for really serious collectors?most of the value in such stuff goes way over my head. Let's p...

Fashionable Antiques
2008-01-28 23:02:00 © Patrick McMullan The Young Collectors’ Night for the Winter Antiques Show at the Park Avenue Armory on Thursday gathered friends and supporters (though not committee members Amanda Hearst, Dabney Mercer, Tinsley Mortimer, and Fabiola Beracasa) to bid on gorgeous antiques and jewelry as well as designer bags, gift baskets, and more in the silent auction room–all of which benefited The East Side House Settlement. Chic Report found designers (and evening sponsors) Mark Badgley and James Mischka there, looking calm and composed despite their fashion show being only days away. “We were asked to participate in this several months ago and we were delighted to be involved; we think it’s a great charity,” explained Badgley, who, along with Mischka, clothed co-chairs Genevieve Wheeler Brown, Elizabeth Meigher, Tatiana Papanicolau, and guests Lily Maddock, Zibby Right, Caroline Cummings, and Nicole Hanley, and also donated five items to the silent auction.
