This evening, without so much as a beating drum to alert the dogs of war, Apple fired a shot right across the bow of Adobe Photoshop’s dominion over photo editing. Aperture is already my favorite photo organizing and fine-tuning software –it’s brilliant, and offers a seamless upgrade to the familiar iPhoto. What’s been frustrating however is the need to export to Photoshop to perform anything more than basic RAW adjustments to highlights, shadow, sharpness and re-touch. Today, this all changed. Apple has released an example plug-in “Dodge and Burn”, and with it, demonstrated Aperture’s plug in architecture. 2008-03-27 02:44:00 When I upgraded from a PowerBook to a new MacBook Pro, I used Windows File Sharing (also known as Samba or SMB sharing) to transfer all of my files from one computer to the other via a network, and it looks like that corrupted my Aperture Library. It look me a few days to realize the problem, but here are a few symptoms I noticed: Images that were in the library BEFORE the move were not visible in iLife applications (iPhoto, the screen saver, etc). The projects appeared in the listings, but the images themselves were not visible. For example, the screen saver would always say “The selected folder contains no pictures. Please choose a new folder that contains pictures or add images to the folder.” Managed RAW images would not display correctly. I would click on them and the image would appear with a ‘loading’ message, and then eventually I would see a solid red or maroon background with the text “Unsupported Image Format”. 2008-02-19 20:00:00 While everyone is still getting acclimated to the new Aperture 2, an overview published at Aperture Users Professional Network revealed an interesting tidbit that Apple itself has yet to talk much about. According to David Schloss, "Apple has added the ability to create editing plug-ins for Aperture." Aperture has only supported export plugins thus far, so this is particularly interesting. It opens up the possibility of more pixel-level editing in Aperture from third-party plugins, even if Apple itself doesn't want to crowd Adobe's Photoshop turf. As Schloss notes, this will quite likely "revolutionize the program" in the long run.
