Johann Joachim Winckelman and Mengs: the Apostles of German Neo-Classicism
2008-05-03 17:13:00
MENGS, Anton Raphael(b. 1728, Aussig, d. 1779, Rome)Portrait of Johann Joachim Winckelman 1761-62Oil on canvas, 64 x 49 cmMetropolitan Museum of Art, New York Both Mengs and Winckelman were Catholic converts. Both resided in Rome. Both attained high positions in the Establishment of Rome.Winckelman was librarian first to Cardinal Archinto, and then later, to Cardinal Albani in Rome, and also in charge of the latter`s antiquities. Albani was one of the leading eighteenth-century collectors in Europe. Thus, Winckelmann was one of the principal figures in circles interested in classical antiquity in the city.Winckelman is now celebrated as the Father of Modern Archaeology and Art History.Winckelmann used his scholarship as a tool in the construction of a theory. He argued that a modern artist could become great only by imitating the works of classical Greece. Only by this means could he acquire a more perfect knowledge of beauty than was possible by studying nature itself. He said: ?The...
In Search Of Signs And Wonders
2008-03-17 16:43:00
Recently in India, as many as 50 people in Kottayam district went blind after staring at the sun for a prolonged period of time looking for an image of the “Virgin Mary”. Believing in false signs and wonders can be dangerous and even detrimental to one’s health as evidenced in the story. Yet throughout generations, man ...
11/14/07 - Life Journal - The Least of the Apostles
2007-11-14 23:18:00
For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.1 Corinthians 15:9In a moment of self-deprecation, Paul bows to the faith of the Apostles and Jesus' brother James. Paul, the notorious Christian persecutor Saul before Jesus appeared to him, goes on to say that God's work in him wasn't in vain. Because of his past he has worked non-stop for His kingdomNow I never stoned baptists in my past, but my lifestyle enough persecuted the church of God. Everything I did was contrary to His teaching. I could argue that I never knew His teaching but creation was witness enough to lead me to Him. My sinful body fought Him for a long time without even realizing it. If I can modify vs.10 a little, "But by the grace of God I am what I am, and I PRAY that his grace towards me WILL NOT go in vain". Lord, I know who I was and though I also know you have forgotten all of that as though it never happened, let it be a stimulus for constantly s...
Twelve Apostles
2007-11-13 07:44:00
Two of the 12 Apostles Yesterday I rented a car together with two friends and we went on a roadtrip down the Great Ocean Road. A convertible would have been awesome, but due to money matters and, thank god, unavailability (sometimes I can be so easily persuaded to spend money on completely useless stuff) we had ...
Meet Paul's Apostles
2007-10-31 18:23:00
Avery Knapp is a 28 year-old lanky, blond radiologist originally from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., in the last year of his residency at Lenox Hill. He is not the guy always talking politics in high school, nor the guy long drawn to iconoclastic ideology—always a conservative, he thinks he voted for Bob Dole in 1996 and knows he picked George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004. He is a committed Republican. But he never thought to vote in a primary or care much about who did. Knapp found Ron Paul this spring while sitting in his girlfriend’s apartment in Chicago, on a week of vacation. He was surfing the web during a study break, researching monetary policy for his father. Articles about inflation and the federal reserve led him to Give Me a Break, John Stossell’s libertarian polemic, and Freedom to Fascism, a documentary by Aaron Russo in which Paul says there is “a possibility” that the private bankers of Fort Knox could have taken control of America’s wealth. Paul, the small ...
Are There "Apostles" Today?
2007-10-03 01:08:00
Most Catholics probably don't realize this, but there are many preachers in the Protestant community who actually take on the title of "Apostle", or "Prophet", or even "Apostle and Prophet." So, you may see a sign that says, "Apostle So-and-So will be preaching at the Sunday service," or hear in conversation with Protestants, "Prophet So-and-So is my favorite preacher." But, are there really "Apostles" and "Prophets" today?"caleb4life" from the HCR forum asked a question about this as it pertains specifically to Apostles, and it gave me the opportunity to do an interesting Bible study on a subject I had never really thought much about before. What resulted was a worthwhile exchange, which you will see below.Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ....ora pro nobis.Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -Are their true Apostles today? It depends on what you mean by "apostle." In the strict sense, an apostle is someone who followed Jesus Christ during his life time, was made privy to his s...
Tombs of the Apostles
2007-05-11 09:10:00
Santi Apostoli, Rome Catholic News Service has an article on Tom Bissell, a highly regarded travel and nonfiction writer, who is at the American Academy in Rome this year working on a book on the tombs of the Twelve Apostles.Actually, as Bissell pointed out, it's 13 Apostles -- Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot."St. Matthias, like most of the apostles, is known mostly through legend and tradition. His relics were said to have been brought from Jerusalem by St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, and given in part to an abbey church in Trier, Germany. So Bissell made a pilgrimage to Trier and spent the day with a priest, who happened to be named Matthias."This priest had a really beautiful way of looking at it," Bissell said. "He said, 'I don't really know if these are Matthias' bones, but this church is here, and I am here because someone very early on believed these were the relics of one of the apostles, and that's a tradition worth preserving.'"Bissell sa...

Apostleship Means Being Sent
2007-02-05 14:00:06
Mark 6: 7-13 Heb. 12: 18-19, 21-24 Ps 48: 2-3ab,3cd-4,9,10-11 If any place will not receive you and they refuse to listen to you, leave there, and shake off the dust on your feet in testimony against them. (Mark 6:11) This mission that Christ has given Is a journey to spread God?s Word; With the hope of life in heaven, What else do we need for reward? Jesus called the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, “Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to listen to you, leave there, and shake off the dust on your feet in testimony against them.” So they went off and preached repentance. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them....
