Cinnamon Apples
2008-06-10 20:20:00
This side dish originated with a recipe for baked apples that sounded like too much work to me. Why core and stuff apples when you can get the same flavors with a bit less fuss? I never peel the apples — it’s too much work and Mom says the peels are good for you. This ...

Apples And Cookies A Jokes of the day 10
2008-06-01 16:04:00
Apples And Cookies A There's a little boy named Timmy. One night, his mother told him to take a bath. Timmy said,"No! I don't wanna!" But his mother says,"Yes, you have to." So Timmy says,"Well if I take a bath, will you take one with me?" The mother says,"Well, O.K., but whatever you do, don't look up or down." Timmy says,"O.K., I won't." So when Timmy and his mom are in the bathtub, Timmy accidentally looks down and says,"What's that Mommy?" She says,"Well Timmy, that's my apple." Timmy says,"Ohhhhh, O.K." Then Timmy looks up and says,"What's that Mommy?" She replies,"Well Timmy, those are my cookies." Timmy says,"Ohhhhh, O.K." Then after their bath, they go to there bedrooms and go to sleep. The next night, Timmy is told to take a bath again, but this time by his father. His father tells him,"Time to take a bath Timmy." Timmy says,"No, I don't want to." His father says,"Well you have to." Timmy says,"Well if I take a bath, will you ...

Expressão: How do you like them apples?
2008-05-21 05:00:00
Qualquer coisa! Po...

Portland Farmers Market - as American as Fresh Apples
2008-05-06 07:00:00
Who doesn’t love a farmers market? In fact, not to savor the moments spent in one seems downright, well –unnatural. Yet, how many cities can you name where the farmers market is amongst the things to do, and not because there is a shortage of event options, but because the farmers market is an actual ...
Special Report: Apples secret iPhone WiMax plans?
2008-04-30 19:03:00
9 to 5 Mac – Apple?s expected to introduce the much-anticipated 3G iPhone next month – but what if the company?s planning a little more than simple support for the 3G standard? Enter InterDigital. In March, that company revealed it has signed-up Apple (and RIM) as a licensee for its 3G technologies. ?As to our market share for 3G, while we did not achieve the 50% target, we did ... read more

NYC Visit Day 2 with a little Apples & Thyme
2008-04-09 13:59:00
in viaggio verso Atlanta/on the road to AtlantaI am heading out this morning, back to Atlanta. It was a quick trip, but visiting my mom is always great. While here, Monday included Chelsea Market and mom and I cooking dinner (pork loin, spinach/cranberry salad, and peppers) for my brother and Angellika.Tuesday was set aside for the ?burbs?. Since I had my car, I was able to bring mom and Angellika to Costco and Stew Leonard?s up in Yonkers where Mom was able to get all necessities that are so expensive in the city ? detergents, oils, coffee, etc. We also hooked up my brother (who moved to NYC in August) with a massive amount of chicken and veggies he asked us to grab. It is this type of bargin, ?more bang for your buck? shopping that I would miss if I moved to the city, unless I kept my car ? which is very expensive to do.I never heard of Stew Leonard?s before mom mentioned it. It?s a cute place ? kind of like Atlanta?s Harry?s Farmers Market before Whole Foods bought it out.Of cour...

Are Apples Becoming Extinct?
2008-04-03 17:00:00
Did you know there are less than 1000 varieties of apples here in the US? That doesn't seem like a problem, does it? How about if I tell you, in the 1800s, here in America, there were over 7,000 different varieties of apples, which leaves us with about an 85% extinction rate! I was listening to a 60 Minutes podcast two weeks ago. Yes, this is the audio version of the show. Feel free to download it and take a listen. Why should I care that there are less than 1000 varieties of apples left? What if I told you that the cure to cancer, the cure to some obscure disease that could wipe out the world's wheat supply, the cure to some unknown disease, could lie in the genes of just one of those apple varieties? Now you know why this is so important and what one man is doing about it.When I first started listening to this podcast, frankly, I thought...who cares? Animals and plants get extinct every day...and I'm not talking about the ones humans are pushing to extinction but the m...
A Few Bad Apples
2008-04-03 04:46:00
One defining characteristic of the Bush administration is that ?the buck stops there.? Whether it?s ?a few bad apples? caught torturing prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison, or the head of FEMA doing a ?heckuva job?, the President and his closest advisers deny responsibility for any of the appalling failures and crimes that have taken place ...

The scent of fear, the scent of apples
2008-03-23 04:10:00
EVEN BEFORE the bottles in the box marked "fear" are opened, it is possible to smell a small heavy cloud percolating the air: musky, sweet and acrid. In a tiny laboratory in Berlin, Sissel Tolaas, smell provocateur and fragrance developer, is sorting through the concentrated containers of sweat scent she has collected from 16 men from all over the world, and all in a state of fear. She wafts the neck of one bottle in front of my nose. The odour catches me at the back of my throat. Tolaas herself coughs and pulls back. ? From WHY IT'S GOOD TO SMELL: The woman who turned body odour into an art form, a must-read article in the Sunday Herald. If you are as fascinated as I was, you can learn more about Sissel Tolaas at: the FEAR of smell - the smell of FEAR exhibit at Grand Arts; The Sweat Hog in the New York Times. In fact, inside Harris's airy flat, the only scent is that of the apple she's eating. Yet it is a treat to the eyes if not the nose. Full of light even on a cloudy day, ...
Apples & Thyme: The Round Up
2008-03-23 02:09:00
I was honored when I was asked to guest host the Apples & Thyme. It is a special event, as it?s a a celebration of time spent in the kitchen with our mothers and grandmothers. I love my mother so, and worry about her each day. She?s grown, I know, but I still worry. Role reversal?an inevitable turn of events as we get older.Since tomorrow?s Easter, I?ve decided to start off the round up with a picture taken by my brother. Mom makes silk eggs Easter and they are very cool! She and my oldest niece began a gram/granddaughter tradition by making these beauties last year. I haven?t tried the yet, but maybe one day!! Silk ties and eggs? Who knew!? Then again, she was the one to visit my classroom during my student teaching in Dorchester, MA. She made wonderful crafts with my class during my winter unit ? winter celebrations around the world. These memories, along with all the others from when I was young is indisputable evidence that she?s creativity central in our family. Now - the r...

Apples & Thyme Allows Mom to Shine!
2008-03-20 21:09:00
a mia madre/to my motherPhew! I have been trying and trying to post, but firewalls have been giving me a headache! Anyway....I keep losing days, and not getting in a whole lot of "me" time. In fact, I was completing my self-evaluation this week for my boss, a part of what we have to do for our yearly review, and I gave myself a U (unsatisfactory) for my personal goal, which was finding balance. I have not learned to find any kind of balance between work & home. ha! Why mention this? Well, the deadline is today for the event I am guest hosting (Apple & Thyme) and I haven?t even posted my tribute! Shameful! And, all those other events I planned to participate? Looking a little bleak.Even though I have waited until the last minute with my post, everything happens for a reason. Fast food is all I have had time for. I don?t mean McDonald?s. I mean food made at home, but with little to no effort. The two of the three quickie dinners I had this week might be considered as side ite...

iPhone unlock hack: cooked Apples or not?
2008-03-09 07:01:00
Apple’s iPhone has stirred both delight and angst amongst the tech digerati. On one hand, the iPhone is darned cool; on the other, ATT has an exclusive (and expensive) deal to provide cell phone service contracts for the iPhone. As reported by fellow ZDNet blogger Jason D. O’Grady, solutions which break the ATT service lock are now available. Is Apple secretly happy about this?ATT’s response to the iPhone hacks is fairly straightforward (from Telecommunications Industry News): ATT spokesman, Mark Siegel, said that could not speculate on the legality of hacking the iPhone, but hastened to remind users that by purchasing the device, they become contractually obliged to ATT. “When people buy the iPhone it’s clear from our materials it’s designed to operate exclusively on ATT,†Siegel said. “When you sign up, you’re signing a two-year contract. You’re obligated to pay the bill.â€Apple’s official response has been deafening silence, which I believe makes perfe...

Nick Clegg's referendum poll farce - Apples and oranges.
2008-03-03 19:04:00
Take a look at this apple. The slice represents the UK's membership of the EU. The slice has a pip, and that pip is our representative on the European Council. Each of the twenty seven EU member states has a similar slice. Even though we are individual slices, we are linked because we are all part of the same apple. Our pip is very important because it represents our country's interests and protects our sovereignty within the apple. The failed Constitution and now the Lisbon Treaty aims to join the 27 segments together to produce one big apple. The problem is this: Our pip would no longer represent our slice - it would become just one of the big apple's pips. In effect our part of the apple would be seedless, the pips make the decisions and the big apple no longer has a say and must obey the pips' rulings. That is a big step for our slice to take, that's why we were promised a referendum by all the major parties - and that is why we must have a referendum. Then along comes Lib De...
Bittersweet Salad with Apples and Dandelion Greens
2008-03-02 21:00:00
Why, oh why did I choose Sundays? What was I thinking?  I must have been on a chocolate high at the time and totally out of it.  Otherwise, why on EARTH would any sane person choose Sunday morning to track her weight loss (which, at this point, is actually a misnomer; for, as of this morning, I am now tracking my weight gain.  Oh, woe).   Well, I suppose I can take some small comfort in the fact that we spent all of last evening at a spectacular birthday bash for my friend Gemini I’s husband. And, given that my mouth was basically open for business between 6:00 PM and midnight last night, I’m assuming some of this is temporary (I’m hoping. . . .).  Enough self-recriminations–must- move onward!  And man, that gal sure knows how to throw a party.  For your entertainment pleasure, I thought I’d try to remember as many as I can of the continual flow of appetizers and h’ors doeuvres that floated by all evening, aloft many a wait-staf...
An Event - Apples & Thyme
2008-02-25 04:30:00
I was/am honored that Jeni (The Passionate Palate ) asked me to guest host the Apples & Thyme event she co-hosts with Vanielje Kitchen. To quote Jeni,Apples & Thyme is a celebration of time spent in the kitchen with our mothers and grandmothers (or anyone else you wish to blog about) and what they did or did not pass on to us that influenced how we cook and eat today. I am very close to my mom and we speak almost every day on the phone. I hate that I live so far from her (but can't bring myself to move back to NYC). Both my mom and my gram have been mentioned several times on Mele Cotte over the last year (individually, or together). In fact, I have probably done so a bit too much for her liking, and posting random pictures that make her say, "Oh my!" - but I love them! Nonetheless, I jumped on this event from day one, then again here, and here. What about you? How will you post your tribute about your mother or grandmother (or any other person special to you)? Well, however...
Apples & Thyme meets Tyler's Ultimate Lasagna
2008-02-20 00:49:00
ultimo/ultimate**I apologize in advance for any incoherency here. I am on my way to loopy loopy land after (yet another) 1/2 day dentist appointment today. I went in for a crown repair and came out minus a tooth - having an unexpected (and not so comfy) extraction. I had to finish out my day at work, but came home to crash. I could kiss the makers of Percocet!Lasagna. My mom used to make it look so easy. Naturally, I thought making lasagna would be in my blood. I am Italian. My mom made it often. And, I am Italian!Well - I was wrong. I have tried....and tried. Edible...but U-G-L-Y. I finally resided to the fact I just can't do it. I threw in the towel. Almost handed in my Italian card. Then, I watched my by Tyler this weekend. It was his Ultimate Lasagna episode. I so wanted to throw my hat into the lasagna ring again. The preparation was okay. The meat filling looked like it was a winner, just by itself, which made me hopeful. I (without exactly measuring) quartered the recipe, alth...

His supervisor is Ivan (Mads Mikkelsen), a priest who's totally bereft of any sense of humor. When the sullen Adam, urged to tell what he wants to do during his community service, says he wants to bake a pie, Ivan assigns him to guard a nearby apple tree and bake a pie when the fruit is ripe.

Tofu Omelette with Sauteed Apples and Sweet Curry Sauce
2008-01-30 13:07:00
Love never ceases to amaze me.  In the halcyon days of our relationship, when my HH and I were still in early stages of romantic life, I was sideswiped with a doozy of a diagnosis that caused me to change my diet drastically for what turned out to be quite a long time.   Still fiercely besotted back then, my HH was perfectly willing to accommodate my strange and singular dietary restrictions: no sugar, no wheat, no eggs, no dairy, no anything fermented (which included my half of those bottles of wine we’d grown accustomed to consuming with dinner), no caffeine, and on and on—for about three more paragraphs.   As a couple who habitually dined out 2 or 3 times a week plus brunch on Sundays (one advantage of meeting when we were too old for kids is the increased discretionary spending), this new diet forced us to alter our regular routine, um, considerably.  All this, and my HH was still happy to comply, and even join me as I consumed cooked amaranth and tahini, tamari-m...

Bulls, Shopping Trolleys And Apples - All Typical Car Insurance Claims
2008-01-26 00:39:00
The AA studied around 180,000 different claims made by the British public and a large percentage were regular claims, bumps and bangs are a normal claim made by people everyday but there are times when insurers must question whether the claims are true. However, these are genuine claims made during 2007.The first bizarre car insurance claim is about a man who had unexpected shower, unfortunately for him the it was a shower of apples which damaged the his car. The next unusual claim was a women who was driving behind a truck transporting shopping trolleys, unluckily for the women, the truck malfunctioned and the trolleys tipped over her car causing thousands of pounds in damage. When people buy their cheap car insurance, they buy their policies not expecting the unexpected but these revelations prove that strange things happen in everyday life. Claims recently made include a man who was unable to hold in his sneeze and crashed into a church wall and one man got extra clean when he dro...
Apples for sale
2008-01-23 20:53:00
Apple earnings climb 58%, but outlook disappoints.Apple Inc. on Tuesday reported a first-quarter profit that rose 58% from a year ago, but the company's shares tumbled in after-hours trading as the consumer-electronics maker gave an earnings outlook that fell short of Wall Street analysts' forecasts. Usually, on days when Apple Inc. (AAPL) reports earnings, giddy investors have a chuckle about the company's famously conservative forecasts and proceed to load up on the stock—confident that Apple's closely guarded pipeline of new products will keep sales and profits on the rise. But in a reflection of the gloomy mood on Wall Street over the prospect of a recession, investors found little to laugh about in Apple's latest forecast. Apple typically gives conservative forecasts, but the latest one delivered by Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer proved particularly disappointing in light of Tuesday's trading session, which saw nearly every major tech stock lose g...

Spinach Salad with Apples and Mustard Vinaigrette
2008-01-20 16:00:00
I love salads. Make that I really love salads and they're so good for you. I come from a family of women that make fabulous salads and when we get together at family functions I'm always anticipating some new masterpiece to add to my repertoire. This one came from my mother and was originally made with bibb lettuce which tastes wonderful of course but I like the added vitamin punch the spinach gives and a bag of prewashed, precut spinach at Costco is so cheap that I always have one on hand.Don't forget to toast the walnuts, it's the difference between "This is good" and "Wow! Can I get the recipe?"For the dressing:4 tablespoons lemon juice1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon sugar1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon Dijon1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon pepperFor the salad:6 cups bibb lettuce (or spinach)2 cups chopped Granny Smith apple1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese1/4 cup chopped green onions1/4 cup toasted walnutsTechnorati tags: salads, blue cheese, mustard, s...

Rotten Apples?
2008-01-20 15:00:00
An investigation by the Sydney Morning Herald has determined that apples sold in Woolworths "The Fresh Food People" are up to a year old. . I just bought a bag of refrigerated Granny Smiths last week. While I think that the technology is amazing, swirling the apples with ethylene to maintain a cool temperature, it rather puts me off apples. My brother works in the refrigeration field, where he designs food storage systems amongst other things. I must ask him about this. This shatters my idea of the fresh apple. I think I will stick to stone fruit, which is in season at the moment in Australia. And how about some disclosure from the supermarkets on their storage policy.Anyway, here is a great Apple poem to cheer you up as you head out to buy your apples. The Apple and the WormI bit an appleThat had a worm.I swallowed the apple,I swallowed the worm.I felt it squiggle,I felt it squirm.I felt it wiggle,I felt it turn.It felt so slippery,Slimy, scummy,I felt it land - PLOP -In my tummy!I gu...

When you are asking for apples and life hands you lemons, make lemonade...
2008-01-05 16:50:00
Life is pretty simple. When you are asking for apples and life hands you lemons, make lemonade. If you're on your way out and it starts to rain, at least you won't have to water the plants anymore. It is a matter of seeing things in perspective. The benefits may not be immediate nor obvious, but you have to know this for sure: God will never give you anything you can't handle. Nothing you can't triumph over. There will be problems. There will be struggles. But if they're not there, how would you know how strong you are? --- One day you will ask me: What is more important to you, me or your life? I will say: my life… You will walk away from me without knowing that YOU ARE MY LIFE! --- Never let a day go by without a dream. --- The safer, best and easier way to pay without exposing your credit card number...

Pineapples have neither pines nor apples in them, so I'm told
2007-12-27 21:55:00
Wikipedia says the pineapple has a root that is used as a "decoction... treat diarrhea." That sounded neat and all, but I had to wikipedia "decoction" as well, which is: a method of extraction of herbal or plant material, which includes, but is not limited to: Stems, roots, bark, and rhizomes." Swell. The greatest journalist ever covered what is emerging as the Great Pineapple Imbroglio. Here are your cliff notes: The greatest fans on the planet wait at Redskins park after our victory over the Vikings. Two of these fans, having committed admirable theft of a pineapple off someone else's front door earlier in the day, present it to Joe Gibbs to give to Chris Cooley (the Pro Bowl is in Hawaii, get it?) Coach Gibbs calls them "nuts" or else "crazy". I said greatest fans in the world and meant it, more from Dan Steinberg: The two girls next to me had squealed when Gibbs appeared, and the giddiness was still bubbling over when we left. "Totally worth it; who would not do t...
