Saudi Arabia Agrees to Increase Oil Output After Crude Hits Another New Hig
2008-05-19 10:15:00
Oil soared to yet another record high on Friday after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) raised its price forecast for the second half of the year. However, during a visit with Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah U.S. President George W. Bush was able to convince the world’s leading oil exporter to increase its output. Light sweet crude for June delivery jumped $3.31 a barrel, or 2.7%, to reach $127.43 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil prices have now soared 103% in the past 12 months. The jump was largely attributable to a new prediction from investment-banking giant Goldman Sachs, which raised its price forecast for the second half of the year to $141 a barrel. Goldman Sachs analysts had previously quoted a price of $107 a barrel. “Supply constraints continue to push crude prices higher,” Goldman analysts wrote in a research note Friday. “The dire macroeconomic impact from the current oil shock has yet to materialize.” This is the...

Saudi Arabia?s Terror Finance Problem
2008-04-22 15:25:00
There is little willingness to tackle the Saudis anymore on the issue of cracking down on terror finance. Intelligence services here and in Europe know most of the money for the mujahadeed in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere still come from wealthy donors in the Kingdom. Only a handful of officials, however, dare to say so publicly anymore for fear of ruffling the feathers of those who keep our gas prices above $3 a gallon and will not allow a Bible, Torah or any other non-Muslim book into their country. The exception has been Stuart Levey, the Treasury undersecretary for terror finance issues, who recently and publicly took on the Saudis in little-noted Congressional testimony. Fortunately, the LA Times did notice."Saudi Arabia today remains the location where more money is going to terrorism, to Sunni terror groups and to the Taliban than any other place in the world," Levey said under questioning.U.S. officials have previously identified Saudi Arabia as a major source ...

Introducing the World?s Tallest Building: Mile-High Tower in Saudi Arabia
2008-04-01 00:45:00
. . . and we thought the Freedom Tower was going to be tall . . . It is always fun to preview cool architectural achievements around the world! We’ve covered everything from the world’s smallest apartment to the coolest architectural projects in the middle east (includes the then proposed-tallest building in the world) to the world’s largest building (proposed in Moscow - slated to dwarf the Pentagon). Once again, we’ve learned of a building that is slated to make the competition cry tears of inadequacy . . . The Daily Mail reported today that Saudi Prince al-Walid bin Talal, one of the richest men on Earth, has unveiled plans to build a tower that will be 1 mile tall (5,280 feet) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - dubbed the Mile-High Tower. Photo Courtesy of The Daily Mail This building, expected to cost £5billion ($10 billion US), if completed, will be more than twice as tall as any planned or completed skyscraper on Earth . . . talk about ambitious! “Expe...

Saudi Arabia bans red stuff ahead of Valentine's Day.
2008-03-28 07:53:00
It appears that the Saudi Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has asked florists and gift shops to remove all red items until after Valentine's Day, calling the celebration of such a holiday a sin. "As Muslims we shouldn't celebrate a non-Muslim celebration, especially this one that encourages immoral relations between unmarried men and women," Sheikh Khaled Al-Dossari, a scholar in Islamic studies, told the Saudi Gazette, an English-language newspaper. Every year, officials with the conservative Muslim kingdom's Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice clamp down on shops a few days before February 14, instructing them to remove red roses, red wrapping paper, gift boxes and teddy bears. On the eve of the holiday, they raid stores and seize symbols of love. The virtue and vice squad is a police force of several thousand charged with, among other things, enforcing dress codes and segregating the sexes. Saudi Arabia, which follows a st...

News: Saudi Arabia uses 11 planes to bring rain.
2008-03-24 21:41:00
Saudi Arabia has started the fourth phase of its program to extract rain from clouds, part of a project started five months ago to secure more water resources in the kingdom. The head of the Meteorological and Environmental Protection Administration, Saleh al-Shahri, said 11 planes are being used in the current phase, together with a high-tech network of mobile cloud physics radars, a communication and satellite network, and experts from various Saudi universities and research centers. The process, commonly known as "cloud seeding" is a form of weather modification, attempting to change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds, by dispersing substances into the air that serve as cloud condensation or ice nuclei. The program is part of the kingdom's ongoing efforts to counter the scarcity of water, especially since ground water is subject to depletion. The average annual rainfall for Saudi Arabia is around 4.4 inches (112 mm) per year but whole regions may not experie...

Saudi Arabia Enters The 17th Century With Female Hotel
2008-03-20 13:37:00
The Saudi Arabian government is determined to hold back the clock of time and maintain its outdated ideas about the role of women in modern life. The kingdom has opened it’s first hotel exclusively for women and it will be women owned and operated. The Luthan Hotel’s execuive director, Lorraine Coutinho, exclaimed: “Inside this physical structure, we are all women. We even have bell-women. We are women-owned, women-managed and women-run from our IT engineer to our electrical engineer. This is meeting a very big demand. There are women’s hotels all over the world from Berlin to the United States.” The hotel and spa is owned by a group of Suadi princesses and businesswomen but it was left to seven princes headed by Sultan bin Salman to officially inaugarate the hotel. The few female journalists who attended the opening were struck by the reality it was men who dominated the opening ceremonies and one whispered the comment: “You know what they&rsqu...
