Saudi Arabia, Blogging And The Freedom Of Expression
2009-07-13 09:15:00 The internet is an excellent source of information, and the development of social media has revolutionised the way the internet is being used. True, the UGC is a great opportunity for marketing enthusiasts. But more importantly, the Web has given a excellent platform for people to speak out aloud, whether in appreciation, critical review, or more importantly, in dissent. The Iran Elections took the world by surprise. We blogged about how Iran citizens were using Twitter to broadcast their voices of revolution in a country where civil rights are suppressed without much regard. (On a more retrospective tone, we also blogged about how civil dissent on the internet is easier to monitor and thereby suppress). Which is why this article by Reuters on bloggers testing the boundaries in Saudi Arabia is very relevant to the current scenario. The article mentions how bloggers in Saudi Arabai are forming a close community. Saudi Arabia is well known for its press censorship which is why it is v...

Clinton, Obama, Saudi Arabia And China. Comments On The Comments.
2009-06-07 17:48:00 The other day, I did a quick post in a pique of anger at the US criticizing China's Human Rights record while Barack Obama was travelling in or to Saudia Arabia and Egypt. I found it absurd that we would be going after China for its HR issues at the same time we were (and have) pretty much completely ignored the far far worse records of Egypt and Saudi Arabia (and Syria, and Yemen and Libya and Zimbabwe, etc.). Not only do I find this selective calling out of countries hypocritical, but I also think it ineffective. On top of that, I see it being done not so much to bring about change in places like China, but to play well politically at home. Obama was elected on a platform of change and when he does things like that, he only reinforces that it's politics as usual. Needless to say, this post brought a wealth of comments and in this post, I respond to each and every one of your comments. First off, let me say that I appreciated ALL of your comments, even those that attacked...

The Mecca Massacre 1987 -- The Power/Influence of Saudi Arabia in the USA
2009-03-18 17:35:00 UPDATING 3-19-2009 & 3-21-2009 & 3-26-2009Anti-Zionism is the anti-imperialism of foolsA bloody event in Mecca on July 31, 1987, demonstrated the power or influence of Saudi Arabia in the United States, and over the communications media in particular. During the yearly Muslim haj pilgrimage to Mecca --occurring in July that year according to the Gregorian calendar-- Saudi police beat to death [or shot] a mass of Iranian pilgrims, estimated in numbers from 400 to 1500. Either the minimal or maximal number would be a shocking number of victims of police brutality. Now, police brutality had become a theme for outrage for many Americans, especially those considering themselves "liberals", "progressives", "leftists" and "radicals". If this shocking incident would end up by applying the label of "police brutality" to Saudi Arabia, that could cause difficulties for the Saudi-American relationship, a relationship which was profitable in money terms not only for the Saudi royal famil...

Saudi Arabia: 75 Year Old Woman Sentenced To 40 Lashes And Prison
2009-03-09 22:21:00 Our wonderful friends the SaudisA Saudi Arabian court has sentenced a 75-year-old Syrian woman to 40 lashes, four months imprisonment and deportation from the kingdom for having two unrelated men in her house, according to local media reports.According to the Saudi daily newspaper Al-Watan, troubles for the woman, Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi, began last year when a member of the religious police entered her house in the city of Al-Chamli and found her with two unrelated men, "Fahd" and "Hadian."Fahd told the policeman that he had the right to be there, because Sawadi had breast-fed him as a baby and was therefore considered to be a son to her in Islam, according to Al-Watan. Fahd, 24, added that his friend Hadian was escorting him as he delivered bread for the elderly woman. The policeman then arrested both men.Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam called Wahhabism and punishes unrelated men and women who are caught mingling. The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and...
Child Marriage In Saudi Arabia
2009-03-08 02:59:00 Just found this great article on child marriage in Saudi Arabia. Read it all. It explains that the concept of child marriage in Saudi Arabia is not just some fringe idea. Yet despite this Saudi Arabia is still considered one of our closest allies. I will never understand this.In the nation of Saudi Arabia the despotic feudal system remains and the rights of girls, women, non-Muslims, Shia Muslims, and others, are violated by the Sunni Islamic justice system. Despite this, major nations still desire to trade with Saudi Arabia and the oil factor and geopolitical issue, appears to override human rights. So when will Saudi Arabia be challenged by the international community? Before focusing on deeper political issues it is important to mention that laws in Saudi Arabia are based on Sharia Islamic Law and the Hadiths. Therefore, we are not talking about people on the margins of society who have no power, but who support child marriage; on the contrary, we are talking about major political...
Saudi Arabia: Two Men Detained For Trying To Get Woman Authors Autograph
2009-03-07 16:11:00 No autograph for you. Oh the joys of living under Islamic Law. (CNN) -- Saudi Arabia's religious police detained two male novelists for questioning last week after they attempted to get the autograph of a female writer at a book fair in Riyadh, according to local media reports.According to the Saudi daily newspaper Al-Watan, Abdu Khal and Abdullah Thabet approached female writer Halima Muzfar when they were stopped by police. Both novelists, who were held for questioning but not charged with a crime, are demanding an apology from the conservative Muslim kingdom's Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. The commission, feared by many Saudis, is made up of several thousand religious policemen charged with, among other things, enforcement of dress codes, mandatory observance of prayer times and segregation of the sexes.Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam called Wahhabism and punishes unrelated men and women who are caught mingling in public.Saud...

Saudi Arabia Agrees to Increase Oil Output After Crude Hits Another New Hig
2008-05-19 10:15:00 Oil soared to yet another record high on Friday after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) raised its price forecast for the second half of the year. However, during a visit with Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah U.S. President George W. Bush was able to convince the world’s leading oil exporter to increase its output. Light sweet crude for June delivery jumped $3.31 a barrel, or 2.7%, to reach $127.43 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil prices have now soared 103% in the past 12 months. The jump was largely attributable to a new prediction from investment-banking giant Goldman Sachs, which raised its price forecast for the second half of the year to $141 a barrel. Goldman Sachs analysts had previously quoted a price of $107 a barrel. “Supply constraints continue to push crude prices higher,” Goldman analysts wrote in a research note Friday. “The dire macroeconomic impact from the current oil shock has yet to materialize.” This is the...

Saudi Arabia?s Terror Finance Problem
2008-04-22 15:25:00 There is little willingness to tackle the Saudis anymore on the issue of cracking down on terror finance. Intelligence services here and in Europe know most of the money for the mujahadeed in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere still come from wealthy donors in the Kingdom. Only a handful of officials, however, dare to say so publicly anymore for fear of ruffling the feathers of those who keep our gas prices above $3 a gallon and will not allow a Bible, Torah or any other non-Muslim book into their country. The exception has been Stuart Levey, the Treasury undersecretary for terror finance issues, who recently and publicly took on the Saudis in little-noted Congressional testimony. Fortunately, the LA Times did notice."Saudi Arabia today remains the location where more money is going to terrorism, to Sunni terror groups and to the Taliban than any other place in the world," Levey said under questioning.U.S. officials have previously identified Saudi Arabia as a major source ...

Introducing the World?s Tallest Building: Mile-High Tower in Saudi Arabia
2008-04-01 00:45:00 . . . and we thought the Freedom Tower was going to be tall . . . It is always fun to preview cool architectural achievements around the world! Once again, we’ve learned of a building that is slated to make the competition cry tears of inadequacy . . . The Daily Mail reported today that Saudi Prince al-Walid bin Talal, one of the richest men on Earth, has unveiled plans to build a tower that will be 1 mile tall (5,280 feet) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - dubbed the Mile-High Tower.
