Saudis and US: Dog and Tail
2008-07-11 05:47:00 Excellent commenter Lafayette Sennacherib suggests that the Saudis are in fact clients of the US. I disagree. LS: You talk about 'the Saudis' as if they were independent operators; they're not - they wouldn't last a minute without US support, same too with the elites in Egypt and Jordan. And most accounts suggest that Wahabbism is quite separate from the Saudi royal families; it's something they've made an accommodation with - they let them have their way in 'moral matters' to keep them quiet. I don't have the answers, but for 'Saudis' ultimately read ' US' elites - they have to do what they're told in the end. To what end, I don't know. To which I respond: Right, but what you mean when you say that they would not last a minute without US support is that the US for all intents and purposes is propping up an unpopular regime. It is unpopular because it is so pro-US! If it goes, you get radical Islam bigtime. Hamas X 10. You get more or less Al Qaeda in power in Arabia....

On Immigration
2008-06-14 05:19:00 Updated June 18:We have quite a few folks coming to this blog who are opposed to immigration. To be honest, almost everyone in the US who is opposed to immigration is White, and to some extent, it's associated with White nationalism. There are also anti-immigrant sites out there like Vdare, but they are almost always on the crazy end of the spectrum. Vdare is not White nationalist, but they do want to end all immigration altogether. On the far moderate end of White nationalism, we have American Renaissance. I do like to hang out there because it's nice to hear real, honest talk on race for once.In general, the White nationalists on Amren want to end non-White immigration altogether.I'd like to point out that this is a crazy and extremist point of view. Furthermore, Whites are only 65% of the US in 2006 according to this chart, and possibly less. 2% of the US is Muslim, and the overwhelming majority are not Europeans. Another .5% of the population are Indian-Americans. 1% of the po...

Arabs and the West Stands Mute While Lebanon is Hijacked by Hezbollah
2008-05-14 02:56:00 As tough the talk has been against Iran by Doublethink Dubya, now when he has something to complain about, he is all but silent. Are the Neocons in Washington and Tel Aviv planning to sacrifice Lebanon to allow a pretext to attack Iran? Or is the US military really on it's last legs and Israel already defeated by Hezbollah? Los Angeles Times Shaken by a Hezbollah military offensive in recent days, Lebanon's pro-Western parties have launched an intensive campaign to lobby allies in Washington, Europe and the Arab world to intervene diplomatically or even militarily on their behalf, officials here said. But there was little sign Monday that the West was prepared to intervene. [..]"Yes, we are maintaining a watchful eye on the area, but not any more than we have been recently," a Defense official in Washington told The Times, speaking on condition of anonymity. Israel bombed Hezbollah for 33 days in 2006 without significantly reducing the militia's fighting power or audacity. ...

Arabs without oil hard hit by food price spiral
2008-04-03 22:50:00 While Gulf Arab oil producers reap windfall earnings, their poorer cousins elsewhere in the Arab world are struggling with soaring energy and food bills. Inflation has surged in Gulf countries, fueled partly by lavish spending of record oil and gas revenues. This is also spurring demand for everything from housing to power and water. Gulf states with currencies pegged to the dollar have also been hit by the global weakness of the U.S. currency, which is driving inflation by making some imports more expensive. But wrestling with rising prices is a grimmer business in Arab capitals not cushioned by oil wealth. weigh the fiscal costs of subsidizing fuel and food against the explosive political risks of social discontent" href="http://www.reuters.com/ar-ticle/worldNews/idUSL2748279120-080403?pageNumber=1&virtual-BrandChannel=0">From Cairo in Egypt to Sanaa in Yemen, mostly authoritarian governments have to weigh the fiscal costs of subsidizing fuel and food against the explosive politi...

Understanding Arabs
2008-03-24 13:40:00 In her new book, Sandra Mackey uses the calamity that is Lebanon to provide some useful insights to the Arab world she knows well. Mirror of the Arab World is well worth reading with the caveat that Mackey has bought into the view that Israel does not have any right to exist. For her it is always “Zionist” Israel in much the same way Arab news media always refers to “occupied Jerusalem.” Even with her sympathy for Arabs, she does a pretty good job of showing them at their worst. Granted, this does not take a lot of effort. Is there a day that goes by when the civil war in Iraq does not produce more Shia and Sunni dead bodies? The Kurds, isolated and armed to the teeth, have managed to keep other Iraqis from destroying their hold on a significant portion of that nation’s oil. Read More…

The Jews VS the Arabs
2008-03-23 02:23:00 A Brief History of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict The Jewish people who now occupy a majority of ancient Palestine have been in conflict with their neighbours since the days of the Bible. It was around 1400 B.C., when Moses led the Hebrew slaves out of Egypt into Judea (Israel), the so-called “promised land”. According to the Bible, the land was promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob making it the possession of the Hebrews. The region however has been conquered under the various reigns of different empires like the Greek, the Roman, the Byzantine and the Ottoman empires, who continually robbed the Jews of their “promised land”. After the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 A.D., the Jewish state came to an end and the Hebrew (Jewish) people were dispersed. In the 1890’s, Jews driven by Zionism to establish a modern Jewish nation-state flocked back to their ancient biblical homeland in British controlled Palestine, eventually to become embroiled in the modern day conflict b...

2008-03-16 18:34:00 The weakly argued claim by the White House-State Department crowd that what they call a "palestinian state" will bring peace between Israel and the Arab world, is belied by Professor Yehoshu`a Porat, one of the outstanding Israeli specialists on the Arab world, Arab culture, and Arab politics. Porat discussed this issue with Haggai Segal of Maqor Rishon [14 III 2008].Porat was a leader of the "leftist" Merets party until he learned about the 1993 Oslo Accord, an agreement made with Norwegian mediation, by the way [I add parenthetically that Norwegian involvement is usually disastrous, as Sri Lanka has also learned]. Porat did not trust the PLO leadership nor did he like the terms of the Oslo Accord. He belonged to Merets because of his arch-secularist views, not because he believed in "peace" with the PLO. Responding to the interviewer's question, he laughed at those Israeli politicians, particularly ministers in the present government, who believe that the PLO and/or Hamas and the...

As his son heard the cries and came to defend his father, the group turned upon the son and directed the full force of their attacks, severely beating him.The son's wounds were of sufficient severity to require hospitalization. The Tzaddik himself refused treatment, and was seen briefly slowing and painfully making his way in and out of his yeshiva in Meah Shearim today. With this attack, as with many "small" attacks now occurring throughout Israel,...

Settler Criminals Not Innocent Civilians
2008-03-10 11:55:00 Via Joachim Martillo, we have this interesting piece, Settler Criminals Not Innocent Civilians, on the attack on the Yeshivat Merkaz haRav in Jerusalem that killed 8 young Israeli male yeshiva students. There are some errors in this piece.Yohai Livshitz and Neria Cohen are from Jerusalem, but according to Martillo, they both live in land colonized by the Israelis in East Jerusalem after 1967. This never-ending theft of Palestinian land in East Jerusalem is an ongoing project that is rarely remarked on in the US press. Like most settler issues, it gets orders of magnitude more press in Israel than the US. In this sense, the US is much more of a "Jewish state" than Israel.Although Martillo justifies this attack, I have a hard time doing so. The attacker definitely picked a pretty good target, but the problem is that half of the students are minors. If it can be proven that these young men were involved in violence against Palestinians in the Territories, perhaps that makes them a targ...

Academic freedom? Not for Arabs in Israel
2008-03-06 22:38:00 by Jonathan Cook in Nazareth In the strange world of Israeli academia, an Arab college lecturer is being dismissed from his job because he refused to declare his “respect for the uniform of the Israeli army”. The bizarre demand was made of Nizar Hassan, director of several award-winning films, after he criticised a Jewish student who arrived in his film studies class at Sapir College in the Negev for wearing his uniform and carrying a gun. The incident raises disturbing questions about the freedom of Israeli academics, sheds light on the veneration of the military in Israeli public life, and exposes the close, verging on incestuous, ties between the army and Israeli academia. Meanwhile, for many of Israel’s 1.2 million Palestinian citizens, who are nearly a fifth of the country’s population, Hassan’s treatment confirms their fears that decades of discrimination, especially in higher education, are far from over. Hassan has faced a storm of criticism, including claims that h...

Benazir Bhutto: Pakistan's Cleopatra
2008-01-21 13:22:00 Via Joachim Martillo, we offer CIA: Mehsud behind Benazir killing? There's a lot of pretty interesting stuff here. When I wrote my post Benazir Bhutto Killed in Pakistan three weeks ago, I said that I thought that Al Qaeda did it. We still do not have a whole lot of evidence that this is true. I have now changed my mind; I think that the Pakistani ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence Agency) killed Bhutto. But that is sort of like saying that Al Qaeda did it, since AQ, the Taliban and the ISI are all sort of interlocking entities in some ways. More precisely, the are individuals and even powerful factions inside the ISI that have very close ties with the Taliban and Al Qaeda. I am certain that the ISI knows exactly where Osama bin Laden is most of the time and is just refusing to turn him in to the US.The CIA blamed Baitullah Mehsud, a major Pakistani Taliban leader in South Waziristan, for the killing. But Mehsud himself is generally considered to be an ISI asset. The only evidence tha...

Gulf Arabs chart delicate course between Iran, U.S.

Bush will seek Gulf Arab leaders' support this week to curb Iran, but may find these traditional U.S. allies more wedded to their own diplomatic drive after long frustration with his policies. Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have watched nearby Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories slip into crisis and Iranian influence spread rather than wane during Bush's seven years in office. "The royal families in the Gulf are looking at the Bush visit with slightly weary resignation and perhaps a vain hope of making a case that they absolutely need the Palestinian-Israeli peace process to work ... and on the Iran issue," said Gerd Nonneman, Professor of Arab Gulf Studies at Exeter University. "On the one hand they want a joint diplomatic strategy to avoid a nuclear-armed Iran but also they are saying we think we can engage Iran more effectively. We think we can take the sting out ...

While Prince Far I's vocals are not to be heard on these sessions, the deep-rooted presence of his personality is certainly felt, and the strength of the rhythms bubbling up through Sherwood's layers of echo and reverb are striking in and of themselves. Arabs Opposed Zionism on account of Islam -- Condi Rice smears Israel as Ap
2007-12-01 20:15:00 Sometimes those who speak in the name of morality in fact degrade morality, decency, and the lofty purposes they pretend to speak in the name of. Condi Rice [riso amaro], US secretary of state, spoke at the Annapolis Conference about her suffering as a black child in the American South in the days of racial segregation [ jimcrow] there. Yet Rice practiced her own form of segregation or apartheid at the Conference. At the behest of the Saudis, she ordered that Israeli delegates to the assembly of the full group, the plenum, of delegates, come in by a separate entrance from the Arabs, who were allowed to come in by the main entrance. This shows of course that the Arabs are not ready for peace. It also shows the Arab-Muslim tradition of practicing humiliation on and imposing an apartheid-like status on non-Muslims, albeit this status is based on religion rather rather than skin color or ethnic descent. It further proved that US policy is biased in favor of the Arabs, as it has almost a...

Britain wanted to use Arabs to protect its interests in the Middle East
2007-11-28 13:52:00 The French scholar of the Middle East, Pierre Rondot, asserts that Britain wanted to use the Arabs to protect British Middle Eastern interests. It is noteworthy that Rondot was a strong sympathizer of the Arabs against Israel and Zionism, yet, being French, he did not have a motive to cover up British policies and motives.Great Britain, for reasons both of fact and sentiment, continues to be with the Arab nation; its favor in 1917 towards Zionism, its resignation to the arrangements of 1920 [at the San Remo Conference?] do not allow it to forget its essential design, which is to entrust the care of its transit interests in the Near East to an alliance with the Arabs; it also emancipated, as soon as it could, Transjordan (treaty of 1928) and Iraq (treaty of 1930); it also ended up during the second world conflict [WW2], as the patron if not the inventor of the 'Arab League,' evolving in the first days of peace [after WW2] towards the even more concrete projects of 'Greater Syria...

Declared A Woman, Bahraini Man Battles Arab Norms
2007-11-05 04:47:00 With his wrestler's build and deep voice, it is hard to believe that Hussein Rabei could ever be mistaken for a woman, but in the Middle East cultural norms can blind people to the glaringly obvious. Formerly known as Zaineb, 33-year-old Rabei was raised as a girl after being born with genitalia that more closely resembled a vagina than a penis. Arab culture and its rigid views on gender meant doctors ignored growing signs that Rabei may in fact be male, he said. "When I married, my husband used to say, 'It's funny, but when I'm with you it feels like I'm with one of the guys, not my wife,"' said Rabei, who is now divorced. Rabei returned recently from an operation in Thailand to correct his gender -- a procedure for which he obtained consent from both Sunni and Shi'ite clerics. He is the first Bahraini to go public with news of such an operation, his lawyer said. It triggered a flood of media coverage and condemnation from many of his fellow Bahrainis for what they see a... |
