Normally I refrain from making musical recommendations because musical criticism is the realm of cynical gasbags who are far more interested in naming arcane genres of music ("indie punk pop electronica!") than rendering any useful information or recommendations. But I've been stuck listening to Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs." Even Pitchfork, which is editorially obligated to hate anything people actually like, gave "The Suburbs" an impressed 8.6 (Not an 8.5 or an 8.7? What's the formula for that .6? Cool Canadian rock outfit Arcade Fire are recording the soundtrack for a new Cameron Diaz film by Donnie Darko writer and director Richard Kelly. It’s the first film soundtrack they’ve ever written and they’re working with producer Richard Dravs, who’s just finished mixing Coldplay’s new album Viva La Vida. Called Box, the film is a creepy thriller based on a 1970 Richard Matheson short story and Twilight Zone episode about a couple who find a box with a magic button. Every time they push the button, they receive a million dollars – but someone, somewhere, dies. AdvertisementAlso featuring Enchanted star James Marsden as Cameron’s husband, the film is currently in post-production and is due out later this year. ARCADE FIRE have been signed up to produce the soundtrack to Richard Kelly's latest film. The DONNIE DARKO director is currently working on THE BOX, which stars CAMERON DIAZ and JAMES MARSDEN. For the soundtrack, the band will work with producer Markus Dravs who was involved with COLDPLAY's latest offering VIVA LA VIDA OR DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS. The group's involvement with the film had been kept under wraps until Markus revealed all on the internet. A statement on his website reads: "Having finished COLDPLAY's forthcoming album 'Viva La Vida' - now off to Canada to work with ARCADE FIRE on a soundtrack for the forthcoming Richard Kelly film." THE BOX is currently being edited and will be released later this year, reports Angry Ape. Great, great show last night at Randall's Island. Check back. I'm going to expand this review during the course of the day.Key impressions:1. Amazing performance from Arcade Fire. Very easy to forget that they've only released two full-length CDs.2. The performance was delivered with enormous conviction, enthusiasm and energy.3. Arcade Fire is earnest to the extreme... if they weren't so good you might make fun of this....but not here. 4. It says pay attention this is important. 5. The instrumentation (French horns, clarinets, violins, bells, accordions, combined with traditional rock and roll instrumentation creates a unique sound. They sound different. That's old news. But their sound is even more unique live.6. Savvy and sophisticated light show. 7. They need to mix Win Butler's voice up above the band. Very hard to understand the lyrics. When you walk into the KLRU studios, home of the always awesome Austin City Limits public broadcast live music show, you get hit with a couple of ground rules: no pictures (hence the juicy program shot), no excessive moving (don't want to distract the home audience), and stay within the lines (the chalk lines, that is, cordoning off the allowed standing areas so as to allow the TV cameras unfettered movement). Win couldn't do much about the photo policy, but he made sure to annihilate the other guidelines. "Do they allow you to stand up, 'cause you can stand the fuck up, please." That wasn't a question! But if it was, judging by the crowd's quick jump he wouldn't have had to ask twice.Read on here.

Here's the thing about Arcade Fire: I don't like their vocals, but I'm amazed at what they're able to do live. I could be off a little, but in this video I count three guitars, one drumset, a keyboard, two violins, an accordian, and two main vocalists and somehow they make one good, cohesive sound live without fucking up once. The last three minutes are unbelievably amazing. The guy's voice still annoys the hell out of me, but what this band can do with their instruments is amazing. Best 8-person band out there.
